Forgive me if a stupid question but the new rage going on is the new USB support for our NCs, what exactly can I do with that functionality now? Examples would be nice. Is it just simple stuff like keyboards, etc?
All of this is unconfirmed, but what I've seen mentioned includes webcams and game controllers in addition to keyboards/mice.
mass storage devices will work as well if you have an external power source
Another stupid question from my side:
How WILL this USB connectivity work? Meaning we connect any USB enabled device to the micro-USB port of the nook from which the charger connects?
That would be cool since that would enable USB keyboards to work with the nook..

And many USB thumb drives work without any external power at all. Not all of them, but an older 2GB of mine works perfectly (especially with the vold file modified so that mass storage devices auto mount)

Would you mind sharing your vold line? Does it work regardless of the sdx partition actually mounted? (In other word, is it wildcarded for any type of flash, or just for your particular drive)

perhaps they need lesser power to run
So basically, I can plug up a webcam and video chat with a market app? Or am I being too wishful?

Is there a Keyboard/Mouse that will work with the Nook that anyone is using today? Of course, I don't understand how a mouse would work because there is no pointer/cursor in Android is there?
I'd love to be able to have a mouse/keyboard and not have to lug my laptop around on business trips but just use the Nook instead. May be wishful thinking I suppose.

Depends on the mouse. If the mouse can run on 100mA, it will work with no hub (personally tested with a Logitech wireless).
Just wondering if anyone knows whether they've gotten the usb headphones with mic to work. I've been following that usb thread in development pretty closely (although I can't post there; not enough general posts, so I guess I'll have to start spamming), and it appears as though they are close, but I haven't seen a post definitely stating that it works. Seems as though they were getting some noise through the mic, but the rate was off. Too fast or too slow or something. Maybe someone knows?
Which Female to Female adapter to get?
I found some Female to Female adapters on Amazon, but they had mixed reviews. If you are using one successfully , I would appreciate more information about where to get it.

Same here. I bought one from ebay for $1.98 but what they sent did not match the description or picture so I killed the charge with AmEx.
As for webcam support, not working as far as I have been able to test. I can get the nook to recognize the cam but the apps do not see it. Have tried yahoo msgr, tango, ooVoo,fring, ect...
As for uses, mouse, keyboard,sd card reader, direct connection to DSLR's for photo transfer, flash drives.
As for flash drives, I have about 20 here from various mfr and only 1 will worrk without a powered hub but using a powered hub, everything works.

Hey,
I don't have yet a Nook to try it myself, but I'd like to know before I get one.. if I use a USB adapter, can I then connected a regular USB keyboard or mouse to the Nook?
I know that with CM7 I can get Bluetooth, but I'm more interested in using the devices I already have instead of buying a Bluetooth keyboard. But I do intend to get CM7 on it, so the question applies for a Nook with CM7.
Thank you.
I would say yes, at least in my experience. I use a Logitech MK320 combination full-sized keyboard & mouse with my Nook at home. Both operate off a single USB dongle connected to the Nook (with adapter). Seems to work just fine. Even some of the special-function keys work. (nightly 155)

Not an idiot question at all! I use a USB A Female to Micro USB 5 Pin Male Adapter by Generic I got for less than $2 on Amazon.com. Shipping was twice the cost of the adapter!
Be careful to get one with a "Micro" male B end. Not a "Mini", as some of those referenced previously are.

Hi, I have just got a usb host cable and I works fine for my pen drive but had a few questions to ask.
Is it possible to connect (via usb) Another android phone and access the micro sd from it to transfer files. The HD2 in question charges itself via usb host but enabling mass storage does nothing on the note.
I have tried my gigabyte wireless mouse and logitech wireless keyboard and neither worked. I have a BT keyboard so only really bothered about the mouse tbh.
I'm on the. Latest rocketrom.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Note has native support for HID's like keyboards and mice via both Bluetooth and USB. However, when it comes to USB, the more basic the device, basically, the closer to true plug-n-play a device is, the more likely it is to work. Also, with regard to wireless keyboards and mice, depending on the power requirements of the tranceiver, those may or may not work either.
An interesting thing to point out is that USB hub's work fine. So if you have a powered USB hub, you could theoretically plug in a USB keyboard and mouse, and an external HDD (as long as it's in a compatible format!).

Hi
Have red around somewhere: On Android 2.3.5 the USB host function worked, but it was taken away on version 2.3.6. This is for the extended USB host functions. I have an OBD-adapter to connect with my cars computer and it needs this extended function. Likewise, there are Apps that can remote control digital cameras and also see "live view" from the camera.
I have 2.3.6 and USB pens are working and my compact camera work (in PC modus), I can read and copy files. When I try my external hard drive it won't work. Haven't tried with external power to it. (An alternative could be to use an USB-hub with external power to it. Haven't tried this yet.
I have understood that when you get to version 3.1/3.2 the extended USB host functions will work again, and also the ICS version 4.0. I'm excitingly waiting for an upgrade...
I have the original USB-adapter from Samsung
Not all USB pens or hard drives will be supported, as earlier mentioned...
I downloaded Nook Tweeks, enabled USB host mode and External vBus, but nothing happens when I connect a USB-stick via a micro ubs to usb converter.
Am I supposed to do something else? Or does the USB-stick have to be in some special format?

It could be the USB-sticks are trying to draw too much power. The Nook host port will only supply low power USB devices (<100mA) and it is also best to have a fairly well charged battery. Some sticks work and others don't.
If you have a powered USB hub then this supplies the power so there is no problem. So try with a powered hub to at least see if that is the issue.

So I'm currently running Carbon ROM B6 on my Nook HD+. I was hoping to connect a keyboard via USB to the Nook HD+. In order to do that, I figure I'd have to get a female to female USB adapter, and plug in the keyboard on one side, and the Nook in the other. Before I buy a female to female USB adapter, I figured I'd ask if this would even work. To take it one step further, could this work with any USB device at all, such as a mouse, flash drive, PC Xbox controller, etc?
It works on CM10. I am not sure if Carbon has that feature but USB adapter is only a couple of dollars.

I don't know, that depends on the electrical current it needs and reports to the host controller.
If a device is over that curent, the host controller will turn it off.
So if I buy a female-female adapter and plug in a usb stick I should to be to access the content i.e Movies?

Hi
I've downloaded this and tried it but my Nook HD+ doesn't seem to do anything different after I have enabled the program and plugged in a usb stick. I'm running a nightly build of CM11 if that makes any difference.
Then your USB stick needs a too high current, try it with an actively powered USB hub.
Check out http://www.zen24223.zen.co.uk/TPUSBUMount6.apk
The instructions are here http://rootzwiki.com/topic/33033-otg-usb-insufficient-available-bus-toolthingy/
plug in your usb device and "press fix insufficient power req" button. works like a charm for my ps3 controller, no usb hub in between the controller and nook required.

As stated, the R1 does not support OTG. You can try a powered OTG hub, but your not going to get enough power from the USB port alone on the R1.

I can't verify that this will work, there was only one user who reported success using an adapter, though I can no longer find the post, anyhow you can give this a try, you will have to supply power with a charger cable, but I make no guarantee as to if it will work. BLUs official statement is no support for OTG. I'm not responsible if you damage your device(s)!!

I'll try it this weekend.
Holy crap, can confirm.
I first tried using this powered hub, as well as a powered usb otg cord (similar to this one), it read my generic usb stick, as well as a 500gb HD (well, sorta, it saw it but can't read ext4).. Then I tried just the otg cord, powered, and it worked. As long as it was getting external power, it seemed to work just fine.
Bare in mind, it "NEEDS" the powered OTG cord, running it without having a micro usb hooked up to power in and it didn't work at all, at least for me. Though you can run the hub without power, don't know why this is, but it was how it was acting.
Non drive testing:
It also sorta saw my Logitech F310. In that it pops up that it is disconnecting, but never shows up while connected (with gba.emu). A 360 controller did nothing.
Mouse and Keyboard worked just fine.
USB Audio seemed to not work, at least with my crappy Griffin iMic (think it is an apple device, I got it at goodwil). I also tried a Logitech usb speaker (not sure what model). No audio came though, thought the buttons worked (play/stop/volume/skip). All this with "Disable USB audio routing" not on (as well as on, just in case i was misreading it).
I also have a Pinnacle Systems AV to USB2 (old school rca video cables to usb) adapter I "could" check, however I know of no android app that can take that in. I do know it works with linux by default, ala V4L2, but android is a mystery. It does light up, but other then that no idea, looking through dmesg was a bust for me at least. Eh, nitch item anyways, doubt much here would use it.
Can't think of anything else to test at the moment, but I hope this helps you guys out a bit.
Tried the powered OTG cable and was able to mount a USB flash drive. I did not have to root my R1 HD to get this to work. The mounted drive did not show in ES Explorer or in Solid Explorer. But I can go to Settings -> Storage & USB and click on the mounted drive. That puts me in the system file explorer and I can copy files. (Do choose "Show SD Card" in the menu. Otherwise there are not many places to copy to.)
---------- Post added at 11:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:20 PM ----------
Following up: of course you have supply power to the microUSB port of the powered OTG cable. I tried supplying power from an AC adapter and from an external battery both worked.
Another note: to copy files from the USB flash drive to internal SD or external SD, click on the USB Drive (in Settings->Storage & USB) first, select some files. Then, navigate to the place where you want the copy. If you want to copy to the USB drive, then click on the internal or external SD card (in Settings->Storage & USB) and do the same thing.
I got OTG to work with a powered OTG cable but I couldn't get UVC to work

I bought a Blu R1 specifically to use in a pair of Gear-like VR goggles, as an FPV headset for quadcopter flight. I was hoping to wire (solder) a wireless receiver to a USB UVC stick, run Go FPV (split-screen Cardboard-like vid player), and power all with a 10k mAh power bank battery.
I'm hoping the UVC not working is just a case of a missing driver. Can you (moshiach101) load a webcam app from PlayStore and see if that installs drivers?

OK. I tried it with a USB wall-mount charger, USB-C micro in a brand new power OTG cable, with a Logitech V-U0007 webcam which was shown to work on a PC.
No dice. I conclude the Blu R1 HD does not support UVC via the USB port.
(and the phone is completely useless to me as I have a good phone and Sprint plan for the family already...)
Is there a way to add the UVC driver to the phone?
Is it part of the ROM, kernel?

It should be added by adding an app which needs it.
The UVC setup works with my HTC One M7. Not with the Blu, so I think this is a HW/FW limitation.

No dice (I just tried). Pretty sure it's an MTK processor, which doesn't do OTG, and probably why it's cheap enough to sell at this pricepoint.

Use a powered hub I have tried and it works for most devices (keyboards, mice, and USB drives), but for other devices such as an arduino, which is what I needed, use USB Host Diagnostics to install a patch.
