This guide may or may not be outdated since i am no longer maintaining it! Sorry for that!
I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD
Except the guide itself...
The windows version is under review, sorry guys! But the linux one still is up
*Thanks to everyone who made this possible, GREAT WORK!!!*
First things first, you need to S-OFF your phone and in human terms that means remove the big bad boulder thats stopping you from installing what you want on your phone.
Prepare the computer
1. Go here here and download it for windows ( in this guide i will use the windows version ). and extract it.
2. Install HTC-Sync from here
3. Remove HTC-sync WHAT!? yeah you only needed the drivers but you have to install HTC-sync for that.
4. reboot your computer
Prepare the phone
1.Go to settings/applications/development and make sure USB Debugging is ON
2.Turn on Airplane mode ( you don't need anyone calling you during the process anyway... )
3.Download this and put it on your SD-card ( not in any folder ). This is the recovery Clockworkmod for Incredible S taken from here
S-OFF'ing YAY!
1. Connect your phone to the computer with your USB-cable
2. Start alpharevx.exe that you downloaded before
3. Go to here again
4. Press download again, the file itself is not important just the form.
5. Fill in your information, you will see the serial you must fill in in the alpharevx.exe you launched before. And the hboot version is also visible in the program ( look for 1.09 or 1.13 the one it says is the one you got )
6. Submit the form and you should get a nice long serial-key, copy paste or write it into the alpharevx program and press enter!
7. Wait a while ( atleast 15 min ) if it dosen't seem to work see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130346 for more information
8. You should now have S-OFF!!
Recovery
1. If i remember correctly the phone starts automagically in h-boot and it should automagically install the recovery you downloaded earlier otherwise just start your phone in h-boot ( hold volume-down and press power ) and it will do it automagically.
2. Start up your phone, connect the phone to your computer and remove the recovery file from your SD-CARD
3. Reboot your phone in h-boot again, scroll with volume up and down and choose recovery with the power and now you are in recovery. Neat huh
If this way to get recovery dosen't work try this

Shouldn't this be more like..
1. Download CMW's zip file (Available in this thread here)
2. Make sure the file is named "PG32IMG.zip" without quotes.
3. Put file in your SD card
4. Switch off phone
5. Pull out the battery and wait 5 seconds. Put the battery back in again. (This step is needed in case fast boot is enabled..)
6. Press vol down+power. HBoot (white screen with 3 android logos at the bottom) should load.
7. Wait a while.. it should pick up on your PG32IMG.zip automatically and install your custom recovery
8. Reboot into your OS and remove the zip
9. Go back into HBoot and then recovery. Use as you please (I suggest you take a backup first then proceed to flashing or doing anything else you might fancy )

I'm not an expert but I'd really have to say no (assuming by simlock you mean locking your phone to your carrier).
This method gives you s-off so you can get root.. there after, you can do what you please on the software side.
For unlocking your phone from your carrier, you need an unlock code (afaik).
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
Small correction suggestion

My post speaks about the technique for the IncS. Anything else, I've not tried on. The reason for this method is that AlphaRevX doesn't work on all ROMs (like the Indian/Asian GB update for the IncS). So my post talks about moving to the Optus/Virgin RUU ROM to get your phone AlphaRevXed

You should go into HBOOT and check because if it is S-OFF, you will need to know which version of HBOOT you have in order to download and generate the appropriate AlphaRevX key.

Yes, if you device is already S-OFF then you just need to flash a custom recovery and then you can flash a rooted ROM or you can add root your current ROM.

Ok, I went to flash a new recovery image on my phone. (recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2-blue.img). following the prompts here; http:hero-roms.blogspot.com/p/amon-ra-recovery-image.html#uds-search-results[/url]
My phone is now in a bootloop. I cannot access the new flashed recovery or the old one (obviously). The only menu I can get is the original recovery screen. HELP! I need to get my phone back up and running soon, or I will have to take it into sprint.
The only other Idea is to somehow create an issue on the phone so that when i take it in (Im within the 30day purchase policy) so that they cannot tell i rooted and flashed ROMs on the phone. Id like to avoid this!
HELP!
I have searched the forums for other solutions already, and I cant help but wonder if i have made it worse.
Edit: If at all possible, I need someone experienced to help walk me through. PLEASE!! I need to get my phone up and running ASAP. Its my bday (Hell of a day to be doing this)

Funny?
Im not sure what you mean. Format the phones memory or the sd card? The sd card has already been formatted (one of the mothods of attempted recovery that was tried and ultimately failed) so now I no longer have the partitioned drive that i did when the phone was working. I dont think thats any issue though, as the problem is in the phones memory, not the SD Card.
Here is what the phone says in the boot screen i get;

Okay I don't know how to flash a recovery except when the rom is running so what you'll need to do is a manual install follow these steps below (credit to zelfie and my search button) :
unplug your phone from your computer and turn it off before you do this
First download the ruu installer.exe
run the ruu installer.exe
open up taskmanager and go to processess
in processess you'll see "ARUWizard.exe" click on it and open file location
scroll through the temp file till you see rom.zip and copy it to your desktop
end the ruu.exe
now rename the rom.zip to HERCIMG.zip
place that on the root of your sdcard (on your sdcard but not in any folders)
Now turn your phone off (if not already)
put the sdcard back in and press volume up and the power button
when it comes back on press the volume down button
it will prompt you to push the action button (the trackball)
give it some time and it will do what needs to be done then start the process of getting root all over again. Don't use the page you mentioned before use this one.
Since I'm teaching you stuff I noticed that you don't know how to use the insert link button. Copy the link your gonna use then when you post a reply you'll notice a little globe with a chainlink, click on that and paste the link in there. Your not the only one who's done it lately otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it

Got it to update. I think Im still stuck in a bootloop though. HELP!! Its been pulling up the Sprint Logo and the HTC screen, but its stuck there!!
I've seen the threads about rooting without unlocking, but I have a more specific question.
Could I root and flash to 2.2 without unlocking while reserving the option to flash back to completely stock including stock recovery and not touching boot loader back to 2.1 update 1.
I am asking specifically for epe54b on att. I've seen most threads were targeted for t mobile versions of n1.
Thanks for your help and pointing me in the right direction.

why don't you first try to see if adb can see you device in recovery first? 'cos i cannot
seems like that is the showstopper for me
So I tried what you suggested and I was unable to get into recovery, here are the steps I performed:
Step 0:
- Install the SDK
- Make sure there is no "update.zip" in SD card
- Connect your phone with the USB
- Extract all files I provided to your <SDK>/tools
Step 1:
Enable Debugging in Setting->Development
Then, shut down your phone
Step 2:
Booting into bootloader by holding vol- and press Power
Use vol- button to highlight "Recovery"
Step 3:
Open CMD, and cd to the <SDK>/tools
Run "loop"
Step 4:
Press Power to enter Recovery now, you will see the triangle and <!>
Hold Power and vol+ to show the menu
Step 4a:
If your CMD shows you the devices is in recovery, press control + c to stop the "loop"
Step 4b:
If there is nothing, reboot your phone and repeat step 2-4 until it shows up.
(This is 99% caused by the sd card, faster card make it easier to show up)

Lets start with the simple questions:
1)why do you want to RUU/unroot?
2)what ROM and recovery and mods do you have?
3)have you tried RUU.exe or RUU.zip?
4)do you have the HTC drivers and SDK on your computer?
error 170 is USB failure, and you need the most recent drivers to fix (usually) and sprint hero is Sync 2.0.40 link here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/
error 140 is phone image version failure, here's a link to fix it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843544
I recently had trouble RUUing, see this my post here

Wait, so you're rooted an want a custom ROM? (fyi you didn't really answer my Q's) Just so you know RUU and s-off is NOT needed to gain root and flash things. Does your phone boot? If so just grab the rom mangager app from the market and install clockworkmod recovery. Then go to the thread for whatever ROM you want, and follow the instructions to install it.
That's the thing though, I tried installing the clockworkmod recovery through Rom manager and through terminal and when I do it with terminal, it tells me the recovery.ing doesn't exist. I can't boot into recovery

As far as not being able to RUU, some people have an issue running the RUU if they haven't ran HTC Sync. Try that and see if it works, and if not, follow this method.
HERCIMG-2.31.651.7.ZIP download it. it's the Sprint 2.31.651.7 executable but in signed zip format, for people who aren't running windows. Not sure who actually converted the executable to a signed zip, but props to you for helping those that can't run the regular RUU.
Rename the file to HERCIMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.
Power the phone off.
Press and hold your Volume Down button, and while still holding it press the power button to power your phone back up into HBoot mode.
HBoot should then automatically verify the zip file, and ask you if you would like
to flash it. Press your trackball (action button) to confirm the update (downgrade in this case),
or press your send button (green call button) to cancel.
Once on 651.7 you would root as normal, but you should not have to RUU back to 651.7 just to root.

I tried that several times. It hasn't given me an option once to flash anything from hboot mode. I'm so stumped

So you boot into hboot directly or fastboot? It says there (maybe) press volume down to get to hboot. After you press volume down, it should automagically find the HERCIMG.zip on your sdcard and offer you to update.
I'm going out for a couple of hours so good luck.
I just had a dumb thing happen, I kept using adb to push a HERCIMG to my phone and it wasn't overwriting the old one, make sure you delete any old hercimgs on the sdcard and try adding the one linked above again.

So I used regawmod's 1-click rooter and got clockworkmod's recovery image (3.0.0.5). So do I really need s-off or should I just live and let gingerbread?
Irrelevant sort of, but the "you have to be s-off" statement is actually true for many phones. Many phones you will end up s-off going through their rooting process. It just so happens to not be the case with the sprint hero and probably a lot of other android phones.

First of all - Please format your posts into paragraphs. People don't like reading a wall of text and will probably make it less likely for you to receive help.
(Im going to assume you haven't made a Nandroid backup and made a safe copy)
I'm new to Android a couple of months so there will be people on here with more experience than me who might be able to help you with an easier/quicker method, but this is what I would do:-
Download the latest Android Revolution HD (a Sense-based ROM that is the same as stock but better - read about it), other Sense-based ROMs are available but I like ARHD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
Rename it to something like arhd.zip
Use the All-in-one-toolkit to side-load the ROM to your phone. It will begin to install automatically. Use the volume/power keys to install - it makes it less likely for the installer to crash.
There would be no need to root as ARHD comes already rooted.
You could also look/ask around for a Nandroid backup of your device/carrier and adb side-load to your phone but that would be more work for you. This would put your phone back to stock like new again. The best guide I've seen on here for people new to flashing, backups, etc. is here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
**Tampered** happens I think when you flash a custom recovery. S-ON is normal - don't worry about it.
Good Luck. Hope I've helped...
If I've made any mistakes here, someone please correct me...

To be honest mate I can't totally remember, I've only used it once and it's been a few weeks since I messed my phone up and had to use the toolkit sideload to fix it. I'm on a Mac at the moment so can't even check. It wasn't too hard to figure out though!
The toolkit (by hasoon) you already have is the toolkit I'm talking about. Sideload is just installing the ROM from somewhere else when it's not stored on your phone. (i.e. on your PC).
The installer (if you get that far) is called 'Aroma' and quite buggy when using the touchscreen so just use the volume keys to move around the options and the power button to select them.
Ty lol, Im currently using volume and power button to moving in the bootloader, it a brand new phone and im panic lol. Ill try all of that tomorrow

Like I said, I can't remember 100%, but its in the toolkit under 'Extras' -> 'Sideload a ROM' or something similar. It might even guide you through the steps. There's probably guides and videos online somewhere. Just call your zip file something simple to help reduce the chance of error.
Not sure I understand what you're saying... If you press recovery, you're taken to the recovery screen?

Try to push it to your device without the toolkit. Read this site
http://m.androidcentral.com/android-201-10-basic-terminal-commands-you-should-know
Use adb push command to send the ROM to your phone while in fastboot mode. Once it's on your phone, just go into recovery and install it from zip.
Place the 'android-tools' folder you download from that site directly onto your c:/ drive, not on your desktop etc. It just makes it easier.

Forgot to say - put the arhd.zip ROM into that folder also.
Try to go into recovery first to see what folders you have, if any. I had a folder called '0' when I messed up so my command would have been
adb push arhd.zip /sdcard/0

You want to UNLOCK the boot loader FIRST, then deal with CWM/TWRP later.
If you don't, you will get stuck in a boot loop.
ICS is the first factory ROM on the P970 where LG locked the boot loader. Much of what's on here is folks moving up from Froyo or Gingerbread. ICS added a number of headaches for phone hacking.
The good news is that once you unlock that boot loader, it's "business as usual".
I've tried with bootloader unlocker by Ilko and said "killing server" server not found....can you tell me why?

Not sure. Does it prompt you for a server address? I wonder if it's related to allowing a 127.0.0.1 connection?
Did you launch the unlocker with administrator privileges? You'd have to right-click first then "run as administrator".

On first blush, it looks like things may have worked... Maybe not.
When I first rooted my phone, I connected it to the computer (via USB) with the phone OFF. I think I held down the volume up (or was it down?) button, and holding that, powered on the phone. It went to the boot loader. Then I did the rooting magic.
Are you doing that ?

If it's rooted, it's rooted.
I'm guessing you have CWM downloaded too.
It's just the bootloader now.....
I need to do some research. Try what I was talking about. I didn't have to remove anything when I did the root (SD card, etc). Just the volume + power (I think that's right).
Maybe someone with more experience on the ICS bootloader can pipe in. I'm working blind here.

Good, now you need 3 things :-
1. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624565 (If you want to flash higher than ICS ROM, like JB or KitKat)
3. Your desired ROM's zip
STEPS :-
a. Put both (2 & 3) at the root of your SDCard via any method you prefer.
b. Install the 1st from market (or apk) and open it. From its menu reboot to recovery. (you may need to install CWM from its menu to reboot into recovery, so be sure you have data)
c. Flash the (2) AROMA Recovery flasher and select the latest one without any mod (best from Evi)
d. Reboot normal just to check everything is normal.
e. Reboot again to recovery using Rom Manager's reboot to recovery option menu.
f. Do a factory reset/wipe data from CWM menu
g. Select "Install from ZIP" and select the desire ROM's zip you have put in 1st step.
You are done.
NOTE : in CWM, Rocker button goes up n down, and search button selects the option. Also power button selects the option but avoid it due to accidental turn offs.
