[Q] App deleting questions - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

well i was going through linda file manager and noticed i can get into system apps loaded on the phone...is it possable to delete some app on the system without messing with the phone?

i wouldnt.. lol is it stock firmware?

no im using a 2.3.3 rom

o ok well uhh you can try it... be sure to make a backup and not to remove system required .apk's lol

thats why i asked i dont want mt phone to explode on me yet...just wanted to see if its safe to free some room by deleting some apk's that i never use

o yeah its safe just be sure to make a backup so if anything goes wrong you can wipe and restore!! just removing apk's wont brick your device!

ahaha ok thank you so much...just dont want to try anything major to my phone till i upgrade

haha i know what you mean.. can always hit the thanks button

[Rooting] In all honesty, is it really worth it? Im thinking about going back to stoc

**Edit: I was completely wrong.. I figured out everything, i know what i'm doing now lol.. thanks guys.
My first time rooting was a couple days ago when i had learned about the "1 Click Root" method...
I succeeded, got that latest ROM (to my knowledge) CM6 RC2 from the trusty (lol) ROM Manager.. which i enjoy a lot since im rooted and what not. I also themed my ROM a couple times to (what i think) are pretty cool themes..
But anyways, to make a boring story short (lol).. I absolutely hate (with a passion) wiping my data to my phone when i see or hear about this awesome new theme i want.. people say it is a must to wipe ur phones data to apply the "best" effect..
This gets REALLY old.. i had to do this like three times yesterday because i kept seeing new themes i wanted lol.. Re-entering passwords and re downloading all of your apps everytime you want a new ROM or want to apply a theme is too much work for how "great" rooting is.. Dont get me wrong, i love the new style of my phone, it looks amazing, but man! do i really have to keep wiping data to apply the things i want??
I now, noticed that all my contacts are not my phone. Only the contacts phones numbers on facebook that i had sync'd.. "My" contacts that i have in my phone are not there.. I imported them from my sim card and re-booted, but still not there.. Could this be because of my theme?
To what really made me mad was my camera, it keeps force closing.. Is this also because of the theme? I have the normal radio ending in 4.06.00.12_7.. I do not know if it didnt work before i applied the theme or when i rooted, i just realized last night it didnt work.. i do not want to re flash cm6 to see if the camera is working just because i do not want to "start" all over again.. with wiping and all that... if i have to, sadly, i will.
I had stock froyo frf91 before i rooted my phone.. in all honesty, should i just un root my phone and go back to the way it was? because if i have to keep wiping data, and starting over, im going to blow a fuse lol..
*** Sorry for my aggressive tone everybody, i just would like everything to be a smooth ride wth no wiping and i can apply themes as easy as 123 without losing data.. is there any ROM or theme that you could recommend?
please, someone help me... thanks xda community
I don't ever wipe when I upgrade to the next version of cyan, so I don't lose a single thing. People say to wipe if you have problems. But you shouldn't have problems which means you don't need to wipe. It runs perfectly fine for me this way with no issues at all, no force closes, etc.

Really? hmm.. ok thanks man.. but in rom manager when you downlaod something, it brings up an option saying backup and wipe.. do i have to click that or can i just cancel and just go ahead and reboot..?
The way I do it (maybe not the fastest) is to set up your rom exactly how you want it, nandroid, then install any mods that might eff up your installation. Once you've installed the mod and you're 100% sure mms/wifi/bt/gmail/etc are all working, you can nandroid again and use that as your base.
The only time you'd need to wipe is if you want to set up another rom so you could switch back and forth between different roms.
And by different roms I don't mean updates within roms, like CM6 nightlies or enom's updates, I mean completely different roms like CM6 as opposed to enom.

Ok thank you.. what about for themes and what not...? it says i have to wipe as well....
Your problem looks to be trying to navigate complicated stuff with lack of skills.
There is a good reason to root "old-fashioned" way, without 1-click stuff: if you read all you need to read and understand (various guides that teach you how to work with recovery etc) to root, then you won't get lost when rooted. Now you're trying to do stuff without even knowing, how things work, and let me guess - you didn't read any guide, you don't know how to work with recovery w/o ROM manager and don't know how to load a ROM, etc.
My suggestion is - go to Development section, open the stickies with guides and start reading. Do the same in General section, and don't skip the Wiki either.
Root brings you full control of the system, and it's excellent - knowing your way you can do tons of stuff, theming being the least interesting/important. But to control, you need to know and understand more than "1-click stuff".
Or you can just go back to stock, if you see no added value in a rooted phone.

What theme are you talking about, I don't recall seeing any themes requiring a wipe.
The only thing I can think of is a pre-themed rom. If you don't know the difference between a theme and a themed rom, you should follow Jack's advice and read up.
Your mistake is thinking that because there is an option to wipe in Rom Manager, then it must be necessary. No it isn't. The option is there for the people who want to wipe, but upgrading from one CM to another won't need it, themes won't need it, etc.
It is your job to know when it is needed or not. And you get that by reading and understanding how your phone works.
just wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache, the only time you must fully wipe is if you get boot loop when flashing a new rom/mod/etc.

You just uncheck the wipe one. Besides you can just use recovery and don't have to use ROM manager.

You certainly do not wipe to install a theme. That makes no sense! You would lose all your data all the time.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

Honestly that's exactly why I didn't root for 3 months. But once I found my exact setup now I just know how to setup each new ROM quickly. After that point now its just fun to tinker the phone and try the cyan nightly. It's really better to just root it. I was in the same spot as you I know what you mean.

The one click method is great man.. no harm is done, the bootloader is still locked.. you can unroot if you dont like it.. btw, if you root, ur gonna love it lol.. there is so many options into customizing ur phone!! I still haven't stopped haha its great bro I'm tellin ya

Please help..

Right so i've done something to my phone, i added that battery circle thing for the galaxy s but i think it didn't take, and now it just loads up into the phone and keeps turning the screen on and off like its trying to load but it never does. OBVIOUSLY i've done something terribly wrong all i want to do is jsut wipe everything and start again fresh so it works! is there anyway to do this through odin or something? help would be appreciated..
Seems like odin and download mode is my best bet but can anyone talk me through what i have to do? i dont care what i put on my phone, as long as it works. seems like a good time to update my firmware anyways.. Just help lol, s**tting bricks at the moment and the thought of having a nice expensive paper weight...
if you want to fix it with minimal work and risc you can just goto recovery and make a wipe data/factory reset.
if you want to upgrade the firmware while you are at it, read this. we can not explain the procedure for every noob user again and again! it's not that hard...if you have any specific problems, report back here.
i recommend XWJM2 or XWJM5 from here
Already tried the simple factory restore and it just does the same thing as when it was before i did. loads up and then when it starts to load the data and the status bar it stops and then screen turns off and then back on and tries again. and again and again lol. I understand that you cant explain again and again and thats why im looking for myself but thought it was worth asking anyways. I have a feeling that the uhh is it framework file? the file that does all the status bar and stuff has gone weird and that didn't didn't get restored to factory settings when i restored factory settings as each time the phone boots, it doesn't show the status bar before it retries. And since the metamorph and the super battery circle indicator mess around with it. im assuming its to do with that.
woot got the phone working with a flash of odin. weird thing is that all my original files such as my back ups and the lag fix are still there in my internal sd card but i have no idea if they're still working because my actual apps in my app drawer such as rom manager have gone. Any idea what i can do now lol? should i delete the files and such from the internal card such as the lag fix files and the backups since im on jm5 now rather than JF3 that i was on before all this happened.
i think it would have been possible to save your old "installation" but not to explain to you how
when you flash with odin, all settings and apps are deleted. what remains is the data they saved on the sdcard. you can delete it or leave it, as you wish . i don't know which of all the lag-fixes you had running but i's not "active" any more so you can delete the files made by it if you are sure you know what to delete
btw. if you did a nandroid backup you could restore it now so be sure to do one next time you try new stuff

if you have gingerbread now , you can do Factory reset and you'll still have Gingerbread
FACTORY RESET is only to DELETE APPS , GAMES , FILES , BUT NOT SYSTEM FILES
if you have Froyo THE SAME
FACTORY RESET is only to DELETE APPS , GAMES , FILES , BUT NOT SYSTEM FILES
So if you have system , this system will not be deleted by any chances , only if you are noob enough to delete some files from the system by root , and i doubt you don't have root so pls do not root your tab keep it like this for better
Hey u my tab is rooted

Certainly makes you think twice before messing with the Tab!
ebook app is available as an apk download, just google for it.....
the absence of ebook is not a valid reason to get back to froyo
Ive searched ebook app for 2 days have found the .apk and .odex files and tried placing them in /system/app directory initially failed and later by searching unix books got mounted it and copied it to app directory then also no use its not installing so i decided to go back to froyo n then on to GB

[Q] I can only send a text message to 10 people max at one, why?

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?
Yes- have a look at the developer forum - there are details here...

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

To make sure you are rooted use a file explorer app (root explorer or ES file explorer)and try to copy a file (pic, video or anything) to /system folder

[Q] ROM X with next floating ...

Hi all,
my 1st post (wohoo) , been a lurker for years tho many thx to all the talented ppl in these forums and apology for my somewhat insufficient english.
Im on [ROM] X with the NEXT Floating Multiwindows and since I cant post in the actual dev thread I need to ask something here (made a search but cant solve my problem).
everything was working fine until I added a row in build.prop a tweek for wifi scan (dont want it to scan every 2sec..)
the phone rebooted after the adding of the line and didnt boot up again, all I got was a sound of "samsung boot" and thats it.. phone was just vibrating.
I extracted the build.prop trough adb, changed it back and pushed it back in, obv according to all the rules (read some posts about "how to" just in case I missed something)
phone rebooted and Im now stuck on bootloop loading up to "samsung" and just rebooting from there.
obv I was stupid enough and didnt make a backup in cwm.
I rly dont want to loose everything and having to start over again with all the setting up and so..
is there ANY way around this bootloop without having to actually reinstall the whole damn rom.
is the build.prop responsible for the bootloop in this case?
Question for an admin/moderator: do I rly need to post 10 times in general before I can post in this devs ROM thread ? the dev was asking for feedback and I got a few things concerning his rom (this above not being one rly).
thx for any inc respons!
I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall the ROM. But if you reinstall the same ROM you don't lose any data, so flash the ROM you're currently on if you can enter recovery.
cheers, idd I could get to cwm and reinstall the rom and save my self a bit of pain, too bad there isnt a real way to come around this tho.
my question still remains tho, do u think build.prop could have cased this even after pushing back a "fixed" one ?

So far adding lines in built.prop it shld be working fine without bootloop..
for ur case u might miss out something maybe u do it differently..not sure...
if u got a bootloop just becuz changing a built.prop u don't even have to flash a rom again.
u can always make a copy in ur sdcard n if any problems occurred u can always use
aroma file manager in philz CWM to change back the original built.prop.
another easiest way u can always make a flashable zip n place it to ur external sdcard
n flash it via Philz cwm.. download the templates from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240619
don't extract it !just drag ur built.prop to the system n flash in cwm !
Hi, Im already using aroma file manager in cwm, weird thing is (and I guess I just kinda answered my own question now... took some time to notice is tho.. Im slow) my /system was empty , somehow I must have manged to erase the whole /system just after editing my build.prop ... since the Note is like my 4th phone I play around with I thought I was pretty much safe or at least somewhat knowledgeable about at least flashing rom:s and playing around... I guess Im gona have to rethink that .
I reflashed the rom and luckily I had an older titanium backup on the SD so at least I got most of my things back and working properly now.
with that "solved" I guess Im gona go back to flashing new exciting roms for some more fun.
Cheers for the inputs boys and girls, have a good one!
