Hi all
I have tried the romkitchen some time ago and all worked fine. Now I tried it again in order to upgrade to Gingerbread and it failed. Cooked the ROM, downloaded it and renamed it to update.zip, booted in recovery mode and installed it.
First thing I notice is that the keyboard does not work. The camera also just shows some very weird dots.
And the worst part is that when I now start up in recovery mode I cannot see anything! Well I can see a lot of coloured dots but am unable to see the menu.
How should I proceed? Can anyone tell me the menu structure of the recovery screen? That way I can hopefully install another ROM (yes I know I will have to guess the location of the update.zip file in the list, but I am getting quite desperate now)
Uh, oh...
Now I cannot even boot the phone.
Any suggestions of how to proceed would be greatly appreciated...
:-(
i think your problem is you didnt upgraded to gingerbread stock
from the romkitchen web site:
WARNING! Before flashing a gingerbread ROM please make sure you have at least the JVH bootloaders. If you flash with ODIN, flashing a stock ROM (JVO, JV9, JV5) will get you the proper bootloaders.
you need to flash it with odin and then use the kitchen to flash a rom from the recovery...
Thanks - I will try to find Odin and flash from there...

phew... Now I have a stock ROM
Tried to install the ROM from romkitchen again but I get an error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Does anyone know how to avoid this?
I think I have found it but am not allowed to post the link here since I am a new user.

We need the error before we can proceed. Also, please get this moved to the Q&A before it gets shut down.
who can move it?
also it is saying
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
and these are the same root and cwm files i have used on my phone many times.

Try the attached update.zip for your CWM recovery. In regards to rooting, do you plan on putting a custom ROM on the device? If so don't waste your time unless you need a Tibu backup as all ROMS these days come rooted. Also, you are the only one besides a moderator who can move the thread.
sounds like 3e recovery here.....dont think a new update.zip is going to help at all....he needs to read the 3e recovery threads that are countless on these forums right now
[facepalm] another one these?
quickest way to root and cwm is to odin flash the speed mod kernel(you want the .tar version), that gives cwm, then flash a custom rom, that gives root and busybox and theming and removes bloat, and other tweeks, ect. ect.
if you dont want to lose apps, you can root from cwm in speedmod and install titanium backup. then do the custom rom thing, or flash a more att rom friendly kernel like firebird(that way you dont loose bluetooth calling).

disregard, currently removing my foot from my mouth.
odin is also the quickest way to fix a soft brick
also if the phone has 3-button recovery and can use odin you will not brick it by flashing a kernel.(not to mention if it doesn't have 3-button working you want to odin flash it to fix that) maybe you get a boot loop but never a brick.
the odin related bricks to worry about is when you (or your computer) interupt odin while flashing a boot.bin or sbl.bin.
these are not flashed when you flash a kernel. also kernel flashing in odin take about 1.5 seconds if i had to guess, hard to interupt it in the middle of a 2 second proceedure
Totally agree with dani on this.

I stand corrected. I blame sleep deprivation. Hell I didn't even notice the op said new captivate. 3e fix.
Edit: love that I dropped the newbie bomb in there too, icing on the cake. Go figure.
no problem. and the facepalm was because i literally just completed answering a similar thread before i wrote that. seems a lot of people are trying to root with the new 2.2 roms, maybe they are still finding the old link found in tech articles from last summer. how i found xda in september was googling "captivate root" and i was linked here from engadget or something. but i think if you did that now you would find a lot of dated information.
Yeah most of it doesn't mention that 3e is locked down.
today i wanted to flash my galaxy s to ics.
my galaxy s was already rooted so i put the zip in the root of my phone.
so then i went to recovery mode and installed ics and im sure i followed every step in the tutorial. But when booting it didnt stop booting and it was like that for an hour. so then i tried to flash it back to the firmware i had before.
i tried to flash back to gingerbread with odin but now it cant boot beyond the galaxy s gt-19000 screen.
i tried to go to recovery mode but in recovery mode everywhere its saying
"E: unknown volume for path {/data}
E: unknown volume for path {/data}
E: Unable to process volume! Skipping..."
and so on...
please help me
the firmware i need ends with jvi thats all i remember...
dude u can get stock firmware from samfirmware.com,try flashing darkyrom 10.2 re it saved me acouple of times good luck
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php
thank you for the answer ill try it
try going back to smthn like jvt or jw1 via odin and then if u want to flash ics follow the video on youtube by totallydubbedhd
You need to flash a rom stock using ODIN. If I understand correctly you must enable the option to re-partition so be sure to also include the .pit file when you will flash, then proceed to install ICS. It is recommended to remove the SD-EXT before starting to install because it can pass to enter a bootloop.
Hi there,
i've a problem with my galaxy s. whatever i do it will not boot i tried several roms and flash these with odin but nothing seems to work.
Till today i only saw a icon like when you're loading a movie, today i flashed another file and now i only see the battery.
After flashing this file (I9000DDJG4) he showed a screen equal to when you install a rom by choosing it in recovery mode.
the only thing i can get in is download mode(sometimes with the 3bc, other time with a home made jig), odin reconize it and flashing will be fine till he must boot.
before i repaired 2 other galaxy S phones without any problems but this is a hard one.
anyone with the same problem or a solution for this? i really don't know what to do now.
(if my english is a little poor, excuse me i'm just a stupid dutchman )
Do you have a charged battery?
When you start the phone the first time after uploading rom, it may take longer than usual.
The I9000DDJG4 rom is quiet old, isn't it?
How did you flashed that with odin?
I found a link. Perhabs it helps to solve your problem.
go into download mode use odin and installa a stock ROM remember to put re-partion when you install with PIT512, CODE MODEM CSS. then go from there.
Like karo1981 said check your battery and it will take longer the frist boot.
Try JW1 stock rom it's fresh and stable
Wow! thank you all for the quick responds.
I flash with the 3 files and re-partition is checked, battery is full, ig got another SGS where i can check or charge the battery.
I know the I9000DDJG4 is older but i had to try something.
i also tried to flash the XWJPA, XENJV4, XXJP2 and XJWS7.
The problem is i got this phone while it was broken allready, but somehow there must be a way make it work.
i know the first boot will take longer, but it dont even show the S logo or somthing, it stays stucked at a screen what looks like he' s loading a video.
Already tried flashing a rom that comes with 5 files (BootLoader, CSC, PDA, Modem) and .pit file, for example I download the JVZ and came with those 5 files

I only have tried flashing with 4 files (CSC PDA MODEM and the PIP) i don't know where i can find that other 5th file, and if so where should i put it in odin?
there's a little progress over here, after flashing the DDJG4 again it reboots in recovery, but its a bleu screen with only 4 options (Reboot sys now, apply update.zip, wipe data/fact.reset and wipe cash) whatever i try it will not work
on the bottom there's a error:
**
E:Can't find mount /dev/block/stl10
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed
**
there is no update.zip on the sdcard, but is there a way to mount it for use ad usb device so i can coppie CWM to my phone?
find an other bootloader to flash it with odin it should be a *.tga-file. gingerbread bootloader should be fine. with this you have the "install zip from sd-card" option in your recovery.
maybe its a solution, but its a step further.
you have to flash a kernel like semaphore before flashing your rom
Generally this solve your issue

first time i hear that.
normally you flash the ROM and THEN the kernel, why would you flash the other way round, makes no sence.
if you flash a ROM you overwrite the kernel-settings, because a kernel changes files in the system.
kernel -> ROM -> no effect
ROM -> Kernel -> effect
Well, the option apply update.zit is in the recovery, but there is no file update.zip on the sd card.
I tried different roms and kernels but nothing seems to work, i like know how i can flash a new bootloader maybe that will help.

So I have a Samsung galaxy captivate and I have searched constantly for a fix. What the problem is I have gingerbread 2.3.5 and it's just not working when I flash roms. I think I have the wrong cmw recovery. When I try and flash cmw recovery it doesn't give me the captivate option I am rooted. Whenever I try to install rom from sd card I can never find the file and I only have this update.zip so when I try and flash I get the E failed to verify whole-file signature and the the other e: fail thing. Please help! Thanks!

ROM Manager works fine for 2.1, but not for anything else. You need to download any 2.3 kernel that already has CWM baked into it and flash it with Odin or Heimdall. What I would do is go into the development thread and pick any gingerbread-based ROM that is already packaged for Odin or Heimdall and flash that. Then you'll have CWM and you can go from there.
But when I try and flash roms I always get an error!

You're getting errors because you're trying to flash from recovery but you don't have CWM. You can't flash anything from recovery until you have it. Like I said, you need an Odin or Heimdall package, not a CWM package.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406877
Download the Odin One Click Package. Do some research and teach yourself how to use Odin and the risks involved, then flash it. This will give you CWM and you can then flash anything you want from there.
i already have the heimdall suite but i have no idea what to do with it or how to get cmw on my phone!
Sir refer to this and this and this. Read the stickies for newbs and understand before you flash ANYTHING. You might end up with a nice hard brick...

jayRokk posted a quote with a brief tutorial and I gave you a link with a one click flasher, both of which will put CWM on your phone.
You need to peruse the stickies in the development section to learn the ropes before you start flashing with Odin or Heimdall. There are risks involved that you need to fully understand and the process for how to do it safely has been covered many, many times in there.
Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858765
Learn the terminology, the risks, and what to do when something goes wrong, and then go to town.
Seriously just follow that first step i posted to my link and youll be able to flash
ANY
rom you wish!
lol

Just did a whole tutorial on how to flash ANY rom the easy way
check it out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479458
and direct if someone still has problems or issues after reading the stickies
thnx
Ok will do. I just flashed.
Now whenever I try and flash mosaic 9 it keeps getting stuck on replacing stock recovery with clockwork mod recovery. And when I open rom manager it doesn't even show galaxy captivate
DONT DONT DONT DONT DONT DONT
use RomManager
when flashing place a rom on sd card
boot up to recovery (pressing Vol+ Vol- and Power)
flash from there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONT i repeat
DONT!!!!!!!!!
use RomManager or any RomManager recovery!!
Ok well how else do I do it?

None of your links ever work
I know you're frustrated...
But do you really think you'll get more help by name-calling? All of the links posted in the thread above take you to useful tutorials on how to flash ROMs using methods other than ROMManager. I've not used ROMManager for, well, anything since the Eclair-based ROMS.
Breathe deep, put the phone down for a bit, and read the links. You'll get a successfull ODIN or Heimdall flash following the methods described therein. I promise!
None of the downloads work though man!
Yes they do... I just checked all of them...
Dude...in the mosaic thread, the second post has an Odin package of the ROM.
Just .tar in pda slot, when it's done it'll boot into cwm, from there just wipe data/factory reset and reboot. Bingo bango you're on mosaic
Thank you so much I'll do it now. It works with 2.3.5 gingerbread correct?
Hello ppl !
Few days ago i became owner of my first android phone, samsung captivate. I am totally loving it, but at some point i realised it has much more potential then as it comes with stock, i made a update with kies from samsung website to gingerbread and i also was able to root my phone, so after researching i found out that this is a best forum for android stuff, spent few days over here reading a lot, but still don't understand how to install custom roms.
my firmware is 2.3.5 , baseband version I897UCKK4 kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489
I'am very keen to start with SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486344) but cant achieve anything.
as far as i understood, in a first place i need to install/flash clockwork recovery, i downloaded few versions but when i try to install it from recovery mode it says:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
i also tried to install few custom roms from recovery mode but same issues
i performed wipe data / factory reset and wipe cash as well, and as far as i understood i can wipe system only if i have clockwork recovery that i don't!
so this is my situation, any advise and help would be superb !
thank you guys
Welcome to the world of flashing. First, I would read some of the stickies on how to use Odin.
The easiest way to get CWM would be to flash a kernel with CWM already built in. The Corn Kernel is one such kernel. Flash it with Odin (the tar file goes in the PDA slot). You will then have CWM and can flash ROMS and other packages.
Once again, read first! It can help keep you from bricking your phone.
P.S. Back up your /efs folder (read threads about this one)

Tanks a lot !!!!
I made backup with Efs Pro as a tar file
then i downloaded CornKernel_UCKK4_v603 and flashed it with odin
then i putted SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 as a zip file into my phone and from new recovery mode installed it without any problem
thanks a lot again!!!
