I9000 shuts down / restarts frequently - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have some problems with a Galaxy S GT-I9000
It restarts itself frequently, and sometimes it even shuts down and I have to remove the battery if I want it to start again...
It is running on DarkyROM JVH v10.1 RE (Gingerbread 2.3.3)
Kernel : Dark Core 2.6
Baseband : I9000XXJVO
I flashed SensatioN theme : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042395
and I also flashed Juwe's RAM Optimization script : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111145
So I really don't know what causes the problem

I also used DarkyROM for a while and didn't have any problem. You could try to reduce the cpu clock using SetCPU.

Maybe the Ram script is the problem, try it without.
Do you have a OC ?

2.3.3 seems to have the problem about memory leak then reboot.
Maybe you can try 2.3.4 ROM

Juwe's RAM optimization should be the culprit. Darky uses his own RAM optimization called RAM Hacks, so the two may not play nicely together. I beleive I even read that the two are incompatible but I can't find the link so I might be wrong.
I would suggest to reflash.

Yeah, its true that the Juwe's RAM optimization incompatible is with Darky's rom.
You can flash it, but than you have many problems like ziko360 in this case.

ok guys I'll see if I can remove the RAM fix script
and see If that resolves the problem
thanks

I don't know it to 100%, but i think you can't remove it easily.
You should flash it new.

u have crowded ur rom with alot..try returning to the stock original Darky rom

Yes, please reflash.
Just consider what a mess is left behind after applying two hacks that more or less, but not exactly, do the same thing:
There will be files changed by one hack but not the other and there will be files changed by both hacks. Then, since you will most certainly not have a backup of the original files, removing the changes made by applying Juwe's RAM Optimization will most probably leave you without the necessary files or half-destroyed versions of them and probably a bricked tab too.
So just reflash with Odin (click on PDS, select kernel, make sure Re-Partition is NOT checked, start, wait a few seconds, done) or with CWM and you should be a lot happier than if you didn't reflash.

The same thing happend to me. I wiped the entire device clean to stock Jl2 how it came originally. This did not help.
I sent the phone back to the service centre in Montreal. I contacted them and they did acknolwedge that it is a known issue. The phones do randomly shut down / restart.

[Q] HELP- Need to fix hideous lag with galaxy s

I have Sansung galaxy s on TMobile uk - Had it replaced now 3 times in 6 months - great phone but fed up with lag - keeps freezing - black screen - lost data - lost signal .. crap hotmail
How do i fix it ?? Whats a Lag fix ?? Please help/recomend
Thanks
a lagfix is a generic name for a couple of different methods used to ... fix the lag
Most lagfix solutions require ROOTing the phone... which, in simple terms, just means giving yourself administrator privileges to change things on the phone.
A simple and fairly popular way to fix the lag is OCLF 2.0 which you can get on the Market. You need to first root the phone using z4root or other rooting tools (look around the forum.. easy to find info on different root methods).
Other lagfix methods change your file system to ext4, which is just a different way of managing bits and files on the phone. Voodoo (also documented on XDA is one of those methods).
If you are a little bit brave, a slightly scary but entirely safe way to fix the lag is to simply replace the ROM (from your carrier and Samsung) with a custom ROM.
While this was a very technical process 6-9 months ago, there are a whole bunch of tools and great documentation that make it pretty easy nowadays.
I would suggest looking at RomKitchen ... take a few minutes to read the documentation, and play with Rom Manager to do a full backup of your current phone setup to get a feel for what is involved. Then if you are comfortable, try installing a custom ROM using a lot of the default choices in RomKitchen (having done a full backup beforehand, of course).
One note...
I spent a lot of time in the last few months playing with 'lagfixes' before installing custom ROMs. In the latest releases of the Galaxy ROMs (JPY and JS3) I've found the speed and battery life very good, even without resorting to lagfixes.
Then you can decide if you actually need a lagfix for that extra bit of performance, or if the 'standard-custom' ROM is good enough
First try to upgrade to froyo 2.2.1 and you have almost no lag and its okey for normal use.
If you want more out of the phone you need to use a custom kernel that make the phone much better.
You can also put a custom rom on it to make it even better.
Right now im using stock jpy Rom with my kernel. Its very nice;-)
**DamianGTO Steam kernel. 350MB Ram. 500HZ. ext2/jfs . js3 base**
I'm also using RomKitchen builds with no lagfix and they are incredibly faster than the stock build.

[Q] SpeedMod k13e-500hz issues

I was hesitant in posting this, however for whatever reason I am unable to find this information anywhere on these forums. It seems like the SpeedMod Kernel is draining my battery big time. Ex – I was at 75% when I went to bed, I just woke up (8hrs of sleep) and battery is at 16%.
These are the tweaks/features that I have turned on/off:
Tweak Options:
Enabled options
IOSCHED
KERNELVM
MISC
CIFS
BLN is disabled
Not sure if there is anything else I should be looking for, turning off/on. I was unable to find any tutorial for SpeedMod but from my understanding it’s supposed to slightly increase battery life.
Thanks in advance for the help!
1. Enable only the 'recommended' tweaks in CWM.
2. Uninstall and delete inactive apk folders to clean up the system.
3. Turn all GPS off
Lower brightness or use auto
Disable auto updating of apps
4. Once you CLEAN your phone up & start with a clean slate, you'll be able to diagnose what the problem is easier
5. The speedmod kernel which you are using is NOT the cause for the drastic battery drain you're experiencing.
Also, what ROM are you using?
MIUI
Thanks for the reply. I have already been doing most of that, screen brightness has always been set to low, GPS was always off, I also turned off Background Data so I think that would take care of auto updates?
Running the stock 2.2 ROM, I did however had to reflash this stock ROM last week due to instability and my aps crashing.
I followed your advise and disabled CIFS.
2. Uninstall and delete inactive apk folders to clean up the system.

Do you mean delete Aps that I'm not using? Or is APK something else?
If you flashed this kernel by itself after flashing a rom that did not included as part of the rom, you need to wipe cache partition and the dalvik cache from recovery then reboot your phone. The first boot may take a while but it's just rebuilding the cache. This some times clears up the problem you're describing.

alright, ive also heard alot of complaints from people I talk to on the phone - background static (white noise) + echo.. is it possible this is related to the kernel ?
That is a modem issue. Look for the modem thread stickied in development they will tell you to flash another modem but they got all the download links. The most popular one is the jk4.

Thanks! I just reset the cache and dalvik cache, seems to be draining at same rate.. i think.. anything else that could be draining my batt?
Im trying to flash the modem using odin but for whatever reason the pdf is not recognizing the file, is it because its .Zip? Then ill just change it to a .Rar.. Or is there another way i should be flashing the modem?

not using any rom! running 2.2
Thanks for the help 1tontomato! I think the issue with my modem has been fixed, I phoned my self and there was no echo. Now on a side note, do you think the battery could have been getting drained quickly because of my old modem? For example if it has to struggle to get/keep network coverage?
If your running stock froyo 2.2 uckb1 when you switched to the speed mod kernel becomes incompatible with the stock modem this is the reason for the poor call quality. It sounds like you are new to flashing roms you should try and read up on what the differences are between the stock i897 US i896 Candian and the i9000 european phones. All the firmware for these phones can be made to work on the captivate if you just understand what is compatible, and learn all the acronyms for the firmware. Happy reading(;~}

just an update - did a recalibrate on my battery last night, went to sleep with 100% batt life, woke up with 89% remaining. Awesome! Reminds me of my crackberry days
Glad you got this ironed out.
Rule of thumb: i9000 kernels with i9000 modems, same with cappy kernels & cappy modems.
When I said delete inactive apk, I mean any apps you don't use, or need, get rid of. You can download super manager, enable root function in settings, browse to system folder, and delete apks you don't use, like email.apk, mptapplication.apk, stuff like that.(just an example)
MIUI
Assuming this app can delete apps i wouldn't otherwise be able to, such as kobo? Would i need to purchase the full version to have access to this feature? I can't find it on the free version.

Sleep of death in all ICS Roms

Hi. i tried almost all the custom roms. all were well. when i shift to cyanogen and miui and ics roms, i always get sleep of death issue or random reboot issue. Any fix for this ? is this because of Bootloader ? how should i get the info about my current boot loader. means whether i have froyo boot loader or ginger ?

cant find this but you can flash gb bootloader it is backwardly compatible with froyo also
This is interesting... I've had sleep deaths on all of the ICS roms I've tried, coming from CM7 before that...
I have had no idea what bootloader I've been on, so I went ahead and loaded bootloaders from KF1. Couldn't even find KK4 anything... (most of the links in the forums are dead now)
I hope this fixes it up, otherwise I'm going to have to go back to GB ... (and I really don't want to...
Anyone come across a remedy for this?
I've had issues with the SOD, but, I've ONLY had it when I have been on GB bootloaders. My usual procedure for flashing ROM's is to FTS/MC to JF6(Eclair) then flash my ROM. So with ICS, I have never had it. I've run every THS, and ICSSGS ROM, WiUI, Doc's Master V5, and Fusion. Now with Fusion, it recommends GB loaders, so when I recently loaded it, along with the GB boots, I decided to stay with GB loaders when I switched to Doc's Master V5, I got a SOD 2 nights ago.
I also have to say that I did have SOD issues with EVERY GB Rom I ran, so i can say with a high level of confidence that it really has nothing to do with the ROM's themselves, and in my experience, has more to do with the bootloaders than anything else. I'm no bootloader expert by any means, but it's just my experience.
sleep death from poppies - yay
See OP of my ROM to avoid sleep death - it has settings.
Wow, The bootloaders have solved all my problems...
If anyone stumbles upon this in search of sleep death or charge death, (in my case both, would die after being charged over 90% and taken off the charger untill it got to around 80%)... GO HERE
Use the KF1 bootloaders with ANY rom...
It not only solved my charging / dieing issues but fixed my lag issues aswell. I can actually use my phone's browser again! (without wanting to throw it in the pool out of frustration)
What about people on CM9 based ROMS. The thread you liked to says CM users stay away in bold

A bit of an update,
After the bootloader update my phone acted fine for over 48 hrs..
HOWEVER, it is now back to its full charge, sleep death shinanigains.
The Bootloader's obviously did not solve the issue, however my phone (when its on) is quite a bit quicker and more responsive in all tasks.
I'm beginning to think that it might be a battery related issue, the phone (and battery) are now over 2 years old now.

Assuming your running a i897 bootloader now, (which means you DO see the AT&T when you boot and you DON'T see "galaxy s i9000" during boot)...
You can use this. I give no guarantee and I'm not responsible for anyone's outcome...
However, I can tell you I simply flashed this from the computer once I had done a cwm backup and pulled a copy to my desktop.
After it flashed,
I ran CWM,
flashed Icy glitch kernel (so I could reflash slim ICS),
rebooted to CWM again,
flashed my slimICS,
rebooted to cwm again,
cleared Caches and formatted all but the sdcard ... and restored my backup...
To help this process i would suggest creating a "Flash Folder" on your Internal SD. Categorize your rom / kernel / modem... what have you, will make life much easier.
Took a couple minutes to solve what I have been dealing with for a month...
All this being said, be sure you have the correct drivers for odin to see your phone. I needed to use Nexus S drivers, I assume because my rom (and subsequently the kernel) are nexus s AOSP...
I'm running dark knight 2 and have had no problems. I am also on GB bootloaders.

Why 2? 3 is out and has so much customization now
i tried 3 and have had issues with signal that clear up as soon as i put 2 back on it. i have three stored on my phone to swap to at any point though. now that there are new nexus modems out i may try again but i am currently very happy with two. with the kf1 modem i have five bars all the time.

Is this the definitive way to tell what bootloader you are running?
I think it's worthwhile to note that I have run a few ICS ROMs on my Captivate, usually charge it at night, and have never experienced SOD. Lots of people posting that they *do* experience it. I think the fact that some don't would be useful to whoever is debugging this issue.
I am currently running Docs Master ICS V5 Final w/ Glitch v14 B5 kernel.
I heard it has something to do with the CPU frequency setting. Once u raise the lower one, the DOS should be fixed.
My wife's cappy has does once in a while. She's only run cm7 with glitch. So I also will try raising min freq. From 200 to 400mhz. We will see what happens.

How to do that? SetCPU or any other free one?

What was ur process of installing ur ROM. Maybe thats the trick. Mind sharing?
I usually do this:
1) Flash JF6 Eclair Odin
2) Master Clear
3) Flash GB UCKJ3 Bootloaders
4) Flash boog_KJ3_kernal3.tar using Odin3 v1.85
5) Flash CM9 (Goes into bootloop)
6) Re-Flash CM9
7) Reboot into Recovery and Flash selected ICS ROM.
After I posted about never getting an SOD on ICS ROM

Funny, I'm still new enough that I followed the directions on the OP for Doc's Master ROM:
"Installation:
-Firstly you must have rooted + CWM installed (you can flash over any rom)
-GB Bootloaders recommended...
-If lagfix enabled then disable it.
-Recommended removing external sd before flashing also.
-Copy rom to internal SD and Reboot into Recovery
-Wipe Data + Cache + Dalvik Cache
-Go "Mount and Storage" and format system
-Flash rom and reboot. At least 5 minute wait for first opening.
----if you get bootloop(probably you are coming a sasmsung based rom),remove battery, reboot into recovery using 3 button combo and reflash rom!
-When first opened let it at least 10 minute settle then reboot again...
-After second opening Enjoy your new rom..."

[Q] Galaxy S reboots by itselft, NO SOLUTION FOUND

Hi,
I have bought a Samsung Galaxy GT-I9000 six months ago. It always restarts by himself or crashes. And I've still couldn't find the problem. I have already tested with: Gingerbread 2.3.5, 2.3.6 and Cyanogen 7.1 and 7.2 RC1. What happens is that with Gingerbread it restarts autmatically while on the Cyanogen it only crashes and I need to remove the battery and reinsert it.
I've taken my phone to a Samsung technician. He said that my battery was with 90% of its capacity, the memory and processor were tested and they are ok. He said that it wasn't any hardware problem.
His conclusion was that Android wasn't a good OS, and that is happens with all phones. But if the hardware is OK, and I've hard resetted many times, installed a lot of differents OS, why does the problem still persists? It just doesn't make any sense.
The interesting part is that when the phone has few application, the phone works fine. It only start restarting when I install 10 applications from market, for instance. If I have 3 apps installed, it may reboot but much less frequently.
In your opinion, was the conclusion of the technician correct?
I've encountered similar problem a long time ago. At that time I deleted the apps , and then rebooted the phone, one by one and finally the SGS works fine again without a certain app. So try to find out which app crashed your phone.
App is not responsable for the reboot
Well, I don't think this issue is related to a specific application. Because the technician also noticed the problem when he installed a lot of applications that he has chosen without knowing my apps.
Besides that I am using the common ones like: Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Skype, and BBC News. They are all updated. I don't think any of them has a bug that resets the phone.
My Phone will reboot by itself sometimes when i enable wifi
This has only started since Darky's 10.2 (JVQ kernel) has been installed on my phone. I have since installed ICSSGS 4.2 with semaphore 0.91 (no reboots) and are now back on stock (factory/carrier) gingerbread ROM and rebooting occurs when wifi is enabled sometimes.
Try cm9. I used to get random reboots on gingerbread roms but since being on cm9 I haven't had one. Current using the latest nightly with stock kernel and have been running since build 7. Battery life is great and is stable. I highly recommend

Something is dodgy, imho, backup all apps using Titanium, wipe phone, wipe caches, factory reset, then install stock gb, say jw4 using odin with pit file and repartition, hard reset again, then root using latest semaphore kernel. Remove usual bloatware, then Restore apps 1 by 1 to see what's causing the problem. Think its always best to start from scratch. Backup efs folder, and sms etc first.

Wait guys, you are using the terms I don't know.
About the comment: "then install stock gb, say jw4 using odin with pit file and repartition, hard reset again, then root using latest semaphore kernel. ", I have some questions:
What's stock gb? What is jw4? Can you send me a link about how to do so or where I can download jw4? There is semaphore kernel and stock kernel? What is the difference between them? The original kernel is not good? Why do I need to install it?
The other commend was: "Current using the latest nightly with stock kernel". I will try that. But how can I install cm9 with stock kernel? Could you send me a link with the steps?
About the comment: "I have since installed ICSSGS 4.2 with semaphore 0.91 (no reboots) and are now back on stock (factory/carrier)". Never used Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung Galaxy S. How can I install it with semaphore 0.91? Is this OS better than Gingerbread and Cyanogen?
Sorry about the stupid questions,

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Plus Lagging Problem

Hi Everyone,
I have been using Samsung Galaxy S Plus for a few months now and have noticed that my phone lags after a few days of use. I have quite a few applications installed on my phone and figured that maybe this might be the cause of my problem. I have used apps like "FMR Memory", AutoKiller Memory, Speed Booster to kill running processes which might be causing the lag but without any great improvement. I have even installed CPU Master and set the min CPU speed as 768 MHz but that didn't rectify the issue either. I have used Android Assistant to keep unwanted apps on starting at boot as well but without much benefit.
My phone is rooted, and im using the stock rom, namely XXKPE (Kernel version 2.6.35.7-perf [email protected]#1), firmware version 2.3.4.
The best solution i have seen so far is to reboot the phone. But this is just a temporary solution because after a day or two the phone starts lagging again. I almost always have a problem when i make a lot of calls on my phone.
Any help or tips which might help me resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Saf
Try to install latest XXKQE. Should help.
Also clear cache, but I don't know if that option is present in stock Android recovery.
Hi przemcio510,
Thanks for the reply. I have used 1click cache cleaner as well but didn't notice much difference.
I will check out the ROM you mentioned but i would really prefer not to flash my device.
I want to know the reason which causes my phones to lag and how to identify and stop it.
Saf
You may having lots of apps on ur phone. To solve this without flashing, buy a external sd and transfer the apps from internel to external. Check out App 2 sd after getting the external sd. Other way is to flash a kernel. Flashing a kernel will increase performance by overclock thus you will experience zero lag. After flashing a kernel you will be able to overclock. Increase the MAX VALUE, not the MIN VALUE. You can't overclock a stock kernel.
