[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Plus Lagging Problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
I have been using Samsung Galaxy S Plus for a few months now and have noticed that my phone lags after a few days of use. I have quite a few applications installed on my phone and figured that maybe this might be the cause of my problem. I have used apps like "FMR Memory", AutoKiller Memory, Speed Booster to kill running processes which might be causing the lag but without any great improvement. I have even installed CPU Master and set the min CPU speed as 768 MHz but that didn't rectify the issue either. I have used Android Assistant to keep unwanted apps on starting at boot as well but without much benefit.
My phone is rooted, and im using the stock rom, namely XXKPE (Kernel version 2.6.35.7-perf [email protected]#1), firmware version 2.3.4.
The best solution i have seen so far is to reboot the phone. But this is just a temporary solution because after a day or two the phone starts lagging again. I almost always have a problem when i make a lot of calls on my phone.
Any help or tips which might help me resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Saf

Try to install latest XXKQE. Should help.
Also clear cache, but I don't know if that option is present in stock Android recovery.

Hi przemcio510,
Thanks for the reply. I have used 1click cache cleaner as well but didn't notice much difference.
I will check out the ROM you mentioned but i would really prefer not to flash my device.
I want to know the reason which causes my phones to lag and how to identify and stop it.
Saf

You may having lots of apps on ur phone. To solve this without flashing, buy a external sd and transfer the apps from internel to external. Check out App 2 sd after getting the external sd. Other way is to flash a kernel. Flashing a kernel will increase performance by overclock thus you will experience zero lag. After flashing a kernel you will be able to overclock. Increase the MAX VALUE, not the MIN VALUE. You can't overclock a stock kernel.

[Q] Awaking from sleep mode takes awhile. Normal?

I didn't know how else to title this thread, so I'm hoping this makes sense.
Awhile ago I flashed the CM6 ROM to my Hero. I haven't added much to it, nor adjusted any of the settings. However, when my phone is not plugged in and getting charged, when I hit the End Call or Menu button to bring it from sleep mode, it takes it almost 2 seconds before the lockscreen appears.
I know that a stock Hero will awake from sleep mode almost instantly. And, when I had a previous 1.5 ROM flashed, it took the phone about maybe 1.2 seconds to awake. Is this normal or is there something that I'm missing that is causing this lag? I haven't really installed any misc apps, and I only removed some "bloatware" from the phone (safely, and ones that don't cause FCs).
Any help or suggestions is appreciated.
I know that overclocking a rom adds lag to waking up the lock screen. Did you flash a overclocked kernel or have you had this issue since flashing this rom?
I believe, when I flashed this new ROM, I reverted back to a normal clocking speed. I used to have an OC kernel of 710, but could've sworn I've gotten it back to stock.
Is there a way to get it back to stock speed, if I didn't revert it back, tho?
Bump.
Is there a way to revert the kernel back to stock?
Option
1. If you have OC kernel install, either use setCPU or Overclock widget to set your min and max.
2. If you running ASOP rom, I'm not sure ASOP ROM comes with stock Kernel or OC Kernel. If it come with stock you may just flash the ROM again w/o wiping data, might have to wipe dalvik cache and it should revert back to stock kernel. If it comes with OC kernel, then option 1 would be best.
my .2 cent hope it helps.
Unfortunately, OverClock Widget didn't do anything to fix the problem. :/ And, if it can't fix it, I don't think that paying for SetCPU will fix it either.
Is there a way I can download the stock kernel?
You cab download setcpu for free here on xda or from their website
I forgot what file it is that changes the CPU speed, but I would look into modifying that file. I also have this problem with cm6 8/17 nightly, but did not have the problem with the early test releases

Thanks a lot, I'm giving it a shot now. I do have a question, tho: when I ran SetCPU, it said that root access was not detected. Is there a trick I have to do with the phone to have SetCPU recognize the phone? I have done some searching, but haven't found much. I tried checking on SuperUser, but it doesn't list SetCPU in it. Plus, when I tap on "Log", it crashes.
Is my phone messed up or something?

I9000 shuts down / restarts frequently

Hi
I have some problems with a Galaxy S GT-I9000
It restarts itself frequently, and sometimes it even shuts down and I have to remove the battery if I want it to start again...
It is running on DarkyROM JVH v10.1 RE (Gingerbread 2.3.3)
Kernel : Dark Core 2.6
Baseband : I9000XXJVO
I flashed SensatioN theme : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042395
and I also flashed Juwe's RAM Optimization script : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111145
So I really don't know what causes the problem
I also used DarkyROM for a while and didn't have any problem. You could try to reduce the cpu clock using SetCPU.
Maybe the Ram script is the problem, try it without.
Do you have a OC ?
2.3.3 seems to have the problem about memory leak then reboot.
Maybe you can try 2.3.4 ROM
Juwe's RAM optimization should be the culprit. Darky uses his own RAM optimization called RAM Hacks, so the two may not play nicely together. I beleive I even read that the two are incompatible but I can't find the link so I might be wrong.
I would suggest to reflash.
Yeah, its true that the Juwe's RAM optimization incompatible is with Darky's rom.
You can flash it, but than you have many problems like ziko360 in this case.
ok guys I'll see if I can remove the RAM fix script
and see If that resolves the problem
thanks
I don't know it to 100%, but i think you can't remove it easily.
You should flash it new.
u have crowded ur rom with alot..try returning to the stock original Darky rom
Yes, please reflash.
Just consider what a mess is left behind after applying two hacks that more or less, but not exactly, do the same thing:
There will be files changed by one hack but not the other and there will be files changed by both hacks. Then, since you will most certainly not have a backup of the original files, removing the changes made by applying Juwe's RAM Optimization will most probably leave you without the necessary files or half-destroyed versions of them and probably a bricked tab too.
So just reflash with Odin (click on PDS, select kernel, make sure Re-Partition is NOT checked, start, wait a few seconds, done) or with CWM and you should be a lot happier than if you didn't reflash.
The same thing happend to me. I wiped the entire device clean to stock Jl2 how it came originally. This did not help.
I sent the phone back to the service centre in Montreal. I contacted them and they did acknolwedge that it is a known issue. The phones do randomly shut down / restart.

[Q] SpeedMod k13e-500hz issues

I was hesitant in posting this, however for whatever reason I am unable to find this information anywhere on these forums. It seems like the SpeedMod Kernel is draining my battery big time. Ex – I was at 75% when I went to bed, I just woke up (8hrs of sleep) and battery is at 16%.
These are the tweaks/features that I have turned on/off:
Tweak Options:
Enabled options
IOSCHED
KERNELVM
MISC
CIFS
BLN is disabled
Not sure if there is anything else I should be looking for, turning off/on. I was unable to find any tutorial for SpeedMod but from my understanding it’s supposed to slightly increase battery life.
Thanks in advance for the help!
1. Enable only the 'recommended' tweaks in CWM.
2. Uninstall and delete inactive apk folders to clean up the system.
3. Turn all GPS off
Lower brightness or use auto
Disable auto updating of apps
4. Once you CLEAN your phone up & start with a clean slate, you'll be able to diagnose what the problem is easier
5. The speedmod kernel which you are using is NOT the cause for the drastic battery drain you're experiencing.
Also, what ROM are you using?
MIUI
Thanks for the reply. I have already been doing most of that, screen brightness has always been set to low, GPS was always off, I also turned off Background Data so I think that would take care of auto updates?
Running the stock 2.2 ROM, I did however had to reflash this stock ROM last week due to instability and my aps crashing.
I followed your advise and disabled CIFS.
2. Uninstall and delete inactive apk folders to clean up the system.

Do you mean delete Aps that I'm not using? Or is APK something else?
If you flashed this kernel by itself after flashing a rom that did not included as part of the rom, you need to wipe cache partition and the dalvik cache from recovery then reboot your phone. The first boot may take a while but it's just rebuilding the cache. This some times clears up the problem you're describing.

alright, ive also heard alot of complaints from people I talk to on the phone - background static (white noise) + echo.. is it possible this is related to the kernel ?
That is a modem issue. Look for the modem thread stickied in development they will tell you to flash another modem but they got all the download links. The most popular one is the jk4.

Thanks! I just reset the cache and dalvik cache, seems to be draining at same rate.. i think.. anything else that could be draining my batt?
Im trying to flash the modem using odin but for whatever reason the pdf is not recognizing the file, is it because its .Zip? Then ill just change it to a .Rar.. Or is there another way i should be flashing the modem?

What rom are you using?

not using any rom! running 2.2
Thanks for the help 1tontomato! I think the issue with my modem has been fixed, I phoned my self and there was no echo. Now on a side note, do you think the battery could have been getting drained quickly because of my old modem? For example if it has to struggle to get/keep network coverage?
If your running stock froyo 2.2 uckb1 when you switched to the speed mod kernel becomes incompatible with the stock modem this is the reason for the poor call quality. It sounds like you are new to flashing roms you should try and read up on what the differences are between the stock i897 US i896 Candian and the i9000 european phones. All the firmware for these phones can be made to work on the captivate if you just understand what is compatible, and learn all the acronyms for the firmware. Happy reading(;~}

just an update - did a recalibrate on my battery last night, went to sleep with 100% batt life, woke up with 89% remaining. Awesome! Reminds me of my crackberry days
Glad you got this ironed out.
Rule of thumb: i9000 kernels with i9000 modems, same with cappy kernels & cappy modems.
When I said delete inactive apk, I mean any apps you don't use, or need, get rid of. You can download super manager, enable root function in settings, browse to system folder, and delete apks you don't use, like email.apk, mptapplication.apk, stuff like that.(just an example)
MIUI
Assuming this app can delete apps i wouldn't otherwise be able to, such as kobo? Would i need to purchase the full version to have access to this feature? I can't find it on the free version.

[Q] Screen glitches after standby using 'Overcome 8.9 Series v2.3.1' ROM

Hi,
Very recently i bought a Galaxy tab 8.9 wifi only (P7310), and decided to flash the 'Overcome 8.9 Series v2.3.1' ROM by alterbridge86.
Obtaining root en flashing CWM went very smooth. After full wipe + dalvik wipe I flashed the overcome rom. Still everything was fine and the rom felt very smooth. However, when I woke the tab from standby the first time, my screen was glitching so bad I had to re-boot the tab. After a reboot everything was fine again, at least until i tried to wake it up again. The same glitching occurred..
The strange thing is, during the glitching I could still open apps and everything, so it doesn't look like sleep of death issues i had with custom roms on my Hannspad.
I already tried to flash the rom again and again but every time the same issues. Someone suggested to increase the min. frequency of the cpu to 312Mhz, but this also didn't do the trick..
Right now i'm running the Galaxiansoup ICS rom without any issues, but i would really like to use the camera (for video skype) which doesn't work right now with ICS.
Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? I already searched the dev topic, but couldn't find a solution. Hope you guys can help me out!! Thnx
I added a short video to show what I mean with the glitches, hope you guys can help me out here!
I dont have any issues when use it..p7300
Try to download the file again.. Maybe a bad download make your file corrupt.
Already tried to re download (checksum verified), but unfortunately still the same issue...
Hi Ruurd V.
What Kernel do you use ?
Is it this one ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344330
And did you check step
4. Install SetCPU and use to set governor to "interactive" and desired OC frequency (recommend 1.4 to start). The default governor has been set to On Demand on purpose even though it is not the recommended governor to use in SetCPU. Setting the recommended interactive governor will help SetCPU trigger the instructions to sysfs causing it to take hold. Sometimes it is finicky and a reboot can help once you have the interactive governor set with your desired frequency.
Until now I used the kernel that came with the rom. I was under the impression that the rom included the latest kernel.
I tried the kernel from the thread you posted, however the v2d version didn't work for me (no lock screen, no play store acces, home button did not work).
I just flashed the v2c version and that one works fine so far! Haven't tried messing with the cpu though, but for now I will continue using this one! Thanks for the help!
I too had some screen issues with that ROM's kernel until I installed motley's v2d kernel, so yeah, it's the default kernel.

Galaxy Note problem: self reboot /self restart with Android 4.0.4

I have an international unrooted Galaxy Note. During Gingerbread it was stable. Since the ICS update it is very unstable. Battery drain. Sometimes no deep sleep. Self reboots. App crashes.
I had not performed a factory resets before upgrading.
I read in forums that those steps could help
a) getting the battery out for 10 seconds
b) removing unnecessary apps (that might be a problem)
c) moving all apps to internal memory
This actually did help. The Note was more stable. Hardly any self reboots anymore. Mostly it did deep sleep.
Yesterday I did install Android 4.0.4 and hoped that the problem would be gone forever.
BUT – the self restart problem with my Galaxy Note under Android 4.0.4 is worse than ever. I had about hourly self restarts yesterday. I will test again today but I am very unsatisfied.
I am coming from an iPhone and still like the form factor of the Galaxy Note. I also like that you can customize so much. Most Apps that I want to use are available for Android. Some Apps are even better. Some UI details are definitely better.
But the instability of Android on my Note is driving me crazy. This is not acceptable. A real turn off for anybody used the stability that iOS provides.
Besides my rant. Does anybody have the same problems? What are solutions.
I am reluctant to perform a factory reset. I am not aware how to backup Apps, screen layout and picture data. Unhappy ex iOS now Android user.

It doesn't sound like normal behaviour, You can have a search through the forum here and a few people have had similar issues, some caused by apps / launchers (APEX & auto Wi-Fi from memory)..
In any case, As a test I would suggest a complete clean install, these are steps I just completed last night as I wanted a fresh system.
Basically;
- Backup data from Internal and External SD - Connect to your PC and just drag and drop the folders from internal and External SD to your PC
- Go back to GB using PC ODIN - Once on GB you are safe from the Brickbug..
- Wipe and Factory Reset (ONLY WHEN ON GB!!
- Format Internal and External SD cards through settings ONLY WHEN ON GB!!
- Flash 4.0.4 / ROM of choice...
WARNING: NEVER WIPE / FACTORY RESET / FORMAT ON ANY ICS STOCK KERNEL
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793665
EDIT: - Or return the device to the SSC if you have warranty..

Flash gingerbread rom in pc odin
Now your in gingerbread rom. Go to CWM recovery, do the wiping data, cache and dalvik(do not reboot yet)after these take out your battery for one minute, put the battery back, then directly go to download mode and flash ics rom for clean install. It will solve your battery problem and fc.
Thanks for all you tips. I am getting shivers when I think about having to root …*but, I just uninstalled AutoWIFI. Thinking about, it this could very well be the problem. I also have ADW EX Launcher running. This will be the next App to remove. I will try this first and see how it behaves. gfisch

Sorry for that CWM recovery, just use stock recovery of gingerbread rom its ok, wipe data and cache. No need to root.
Apps on sd card cause reboots
Hello there, I was having the exact same problems as you. Random reboots sometimes 1 - 3 times a day. I found that the solution to my problem lies in the move apps to sd functionality of android. It is an actual issue with android (#25563). The os keeps rebooting when apps are installed on the sd card. I discovered this here: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25563
Since moving all of my apps to internal memory the problem has disappeared, my battery is flat lining when idle (1 -2% drain every 2 hours) my phone is also much more responsive.
You may want to check that there are no apps installed on your sd card (the internal sd called usb storage)
EDIT: AutoWIFI could also cause the reboot problems. I had the same issue with Juice Defender causing reboots.
Im also running 4.0.4 ics and i have had restarts from being on GB. It was very bad in the start but soon as i updated to the ics one before this it got abit worst. Now im on 4.4 it still happends. now it happenss when im in apps mostly . wot can i do???

I think you ought to do a clean install (flash) an ICS rom of your own choice. By that, I mean for you to do wipe/factory reset, clear cache and Dalvik cache. The important thing here is to do it correctly.
To flash a rom, you need to be in CWM mode. The next thing to do is to flash Abyss and then reboot recovery! After this you are good to flash any ICS rom.
YOU MUST ONLY DO THE WIPE AFTER YOU HAVE REBOOTED THE RECOVERY!
There is no need to mess around with moving apps to external sd card, not at this stage anyway. Hopefully, with the clean system, your problem would go away.
Hope this would offer some help.
help with apps
I'm having some issues about some apps of instant messaging on my galaxy N7000. the apps i'm talking about are whatsapp kakao talk messenger viber and chatOn. after downloading and configuring the apps theybseems to work but in a while they are automatically removed from the phone and on the status bar the following message is displayed " whats app has been removed" even if i don't uninstall it. it happens all the times. i tried to contatt the apps developer, the google play customer service and samsung customer service but noone give me an answer. i took some logs about the installing and uninstalling process of the apps and i wanna know if someone could read that for me instead of finding a solution. i can't attach any file yet but i can send it by mail to those who wants to.leave his email address even in a pm. thank you for anyone can help. sorry in advanced if this is not the right place to edit this thread
I opened another thread about this issues but i suppose this could be a more appropriate section.
Hope i'm not messing aroud

Thanx for The reply. I've now been rooted but still on stock rom ics 4.0.4 but I still get those hangs time to time when I'm doing to many thins at once. Until I find a rom that's stable ill stay on stock lol the threads about peoples phones seems like a nightmare.
Can your steps still be done? Newbie so I don't understand hardly anything. I'm on speedmod kernal.

Ok, I'm sort of a year late, but recently, I've been having the same issue as well. S oi've got a safe kernel, and wiped/factory reset the pone.
now I lost all my apps, and th eproblem still exists. Any chance its a hardware problem?
Install another Kernel !!
I suggest you to install a new kernel, Franco.kernel or HydraCore Kernel
Sincerely, Marwanpro
