[Tutorial] How to remove the "Sense" from Sense - Thunderbolt Themes and Apps

Hiya,
Like many others, I cannot stand the look/use of HTC Sense's overlay as a whole, i'm more of an AOSP/vanilla Android user.
The thunderbolt is a great device, but because it's the first dual signal LTE device, CM support for it is still being worked on (issues with the RIL), and because of that, the current CM build is still in an Alpha stage. Due to the alpha nature of it, I cannot use it for daily use (inherent issues with signal + phone not ringing), so I've stuck with a rooted version of the base rom, and I've slowly been working to get the "sense" feel out of it.
AFAIK, The major sense differences to AOSP can be broken up into 4 sections, namely the home launcher, lockscreen, contacts/phone, && calendar. Below I will detail what I did to my phone to get it back to as AOSP as possible.
Home Launcher

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The home launcher is your one stop location for all the apps and widgets you have installed. Customization of this is just as much a part of you as it is your phone. The default Sense Launcher IMHO leaves a lot of customization to be desired, which is why I switched over to ADWLauncher (market link: http://goo.gl/KRwbS) by Anderweb. This is actually a modified (more frequently updated) version of the launcher that comes with Cyanogenmod. With this launcher, you can give yourself the AOSP look, but also have enough extras to choke a donkey. Also, if you also install ADW Notifier (market link: http://goo.gl/Q41HQ) you can get visual notification counts for common apps (and some uncommon ones too!).
Lockscreen
The lockscreen is the first screen you see when turning on your phone, and chances are it's the screen you will see more than any other. The sense lockscreen has little customization, but not much. That is why I use Widgetlocker (market link: http://goo.gl/CKCxg) by Teslacoil Software. Widgetlocker lets you customize your home screen with anything you want. Widgets, shortcuts, sliders, etc... You can make it look like the AOSP exactly, or your own custom idea. The main thing here is you can make it however you want, so if you're looking for the AOSP look, this can give it to you.
Phone/Contacts
This one was way more tricky then you would expect. It took awhile, but I finally found a way to replace the Sense Contacts/Dialer with the AOSP version (replace being a loose term). The thanks for this one goes to the XDA user Named NarkTwo, who figured out the process to get this to work. Your phone will need to be rooted, and you will need the ability to change a directory to read/write along with changing the permissions for a file. This can be done using an app like Root Explorer, or you can use ADB if you prefer. I will be giving the instructions for downloading via your phone and using Root Explorer:
1. Download the Contacts.apk file here: http://goo.gl/FwdEk
2. in root explorer, navigate to your Downloads folder.
3. Long click on the Contacts.apk file and select copy.
4. Navigate to the folder /system/app
5. Click the "Mount R/W" button at the top
6. Click the "Paste" button at the bottom
7. Long click the Contacts.apk file and select "Permissions"
8. Set the permissions as follows:
*For Owner, check Read && Write
*For Group, check Read
*For Others, check Read
9. Press the "Ok" button
10. Reboot your phone
Now once your phone reboots, you will have the AOSP dialer/contacts installed on your phone, along with the sense version. Now all you have to do is perform the actions you would normally do (like click on a contact or show the pop out contact bar) and select the AOSP contacts/dialer app as the default to use for said action.
Calendar
Still working on this one. I've found a few possible ways, and I will test them out. Once I've found a suitable way to get this on the phone and working properly, I'll update this thread.

Well written write up sir. I do however have to ask, why not just flash a senseless or stripped rom?

Mainly because the unique ones are going through the same issues that Slayher is with CM (RIL), and the ones that are just "stripped" take over too much control of what is added/removed. I like doing it this way, so if someone only wants say, the dialer, they can do that single fix. Or if say, they only want a different lock screen, they can change that.
To me Android is about personalizing, and rather than have someone else pick what to add/remove, I can customize it how I want.

Cool thanks! I hate the sense dialer

Are you guys getting a weird background when looking at the list of contacts? It looks like that Sense colorful bubble background.

You can get the AOSP lock screen by removing /system/app/HTCLockScreen.apk.
To be safe, rename it to HTCLockScreen.bak.

I just found this post, and wanted to say, thanks. I really wanted to get the non-Sense dialer on my phone, and finally found a solution.

I love the Sense dialer. It is the ONLY thing I love about Sense.

Creating themes/bootscreens?

Hi clever people!
Ok so it's taken me a few days to really figure this thing out and decide to root my T-Mobile UK G2 Touch (Hero or whatever) and after doing it, I installed villain4beta2 which at first I liked. however I've had it a day now at work (it get used alot at work) and its just not right.... things seem nicer and perhaps a touch faster but with silly errors. for example even when I'd disabled open home and put sense back on it kept coming up with force kill open home *sigh*
anyways i think I'm going back to a rooted stock rom because i dnt really want much from my phone i only rooted it to create "full" themes for it, apart from maybe apps2sd perhaps. This brings me on to the point...
So, I want to theme it, I know this can be done via open home ahome and other desktop replacement apps but they all seem to slow my phone done compared to sense - plus i like sense, and even when i use them I cannot a)edit the notification bar
b)change the bootscreen
so I want to know if the following few things are possible and point me in the right direction...
-create MY OWN bootscreen (not one off another phone)
-change location/fonts/colours on notification bar
-change the colours/font of the sense buttons (phone add apps)
this lot is probably way more complicated than i imagine, however I have made F0 (firmware - flashed) themes for the PSP, so i think i can handle this, its just i know very little about android atm. So please take pitty on me and point me in the correct direct of what ever is possible...
mattyyey
c'mon guys! can you at least tell me how to make a bootscreen - what files are involved etc?
(FYI i have a rooted stock ROM now - 2.73.110.26)
have a look at /system/media, in 1.5 roms you will find a folder called "bootscreen", in 2.1 roms there is either a folder or a zipfile. have a look at these, then ask your specific questions here after you did a search.
I would also like to know how to make/create/customize themes.
bootscreens are easy enough, what tools and files are involved in the theme and where can we locate them?
Do we need to get the sign tools etc from the dev of the ROM were creating it for?
Thanks in advance
edit the pngs inside the apks. do not unpack them, just update the files inside them. do not resign them with anything. and there is no rom developer key, there are the testkeys from htc.
Cheers kendong, your a gent.

Wow I so forgot about this thread! Thanks kendong2 I have a lot of it figured out now editing apks and making bootscreens... and getting the final customization via sweeter home. LCARSoid is basically finished apart from a few widgets.
I have yet to figure out how rearranging the notifications bar is done or fonts. I know fonts can be done tho.
Anyways thanks, I managed to piece it together in the end. :-D

Touchwiz3 Launcher for the Spica [MDPI screen]

Repost from: Samdroid Forums
Finally Samsung threads on xda! On this occassion let me share my hack-ish attempt to make the Touchwiz3 launcher from the Galaxy S fit our spicas. Consider these as perpetual beta version as there are issues, but most of the gui elements now fit properly at first run of the launcher. No more re-arranging things when hidden behind the dock!

There are derived from rolle3k's ports of both the Galaxy S and i5800 Touchwiz 3 Launchers. Hence, two version to choose from:
Common Notes:
Added xml to make them more compatible with mdpi screens (specifically the spica), should in theory should still look ok in ldpi or hdpi screens also. Feedback on this please.
I've modified the default startup items on the deskscreen as well as the dock (see screenshot), notably the dock as onlythe messaging icon appears. Take note that instead of the stock messaging app, I linked to Handcent SMS instead. Testing out the option if handcent sms is not installed, it will instead show the stock messaging app.
Tweaked displayable area for List mode, last items should not be covered by the dock anymore.
No promises of being a better launcher experience than others .
Speed and cpu load isn't noticeably faster/ better (nor worse) than the original ports.
Issues with widgets with text still remain, icons lining up properly in the homescreens, maybe unresolvable.
No samsung widgets, an external issue?.

A. GalaxyS-based update 02.01
Updated some ninepath graphics, as a result the Homescreen Folder icon glitch is now gone
Tweaked graphic elements locations should line up better.
This has more locales than the i5800 version so choose this in case your language is included.

B. i5800-based update B02
Updated graphics to use hdpi version (originally ldpi).
Tweaked graphic elements locations should line up better.
This is multi-locales, but less than GalaxyS version (ex. no Swedish)
Smaller file size than GalaxyS.

C. OPTIONAL release: i5800-based update B02.test 1-line text for drawer icons
1 line text for the apps in the drawers.
Proportionally larger tiles/ icons than the Galaxy S icons.
The text doesn't scroll if it's too long too long unlike homescreen icons.
Also tweaked the List Layout more to lessen the area hidden by the dock.
Update name is TW3Launcher-i5800-kenshin-b02.test.1LineDrawer.apk, unzip using 7-zip.

D. [2010-08-18] Update: i5500-based TW3 launcher release
PREVIEWS:
Details:
Derived from launcher of I5500XWJG9 FW.
Corrected dock phone and contact icons to launch spica version of these apps. Was quite fcking hard to do. These are still NOT customizable.
Added some nicer graphics to certain ui elements. Optimized some others resulting in smaller file size.
Make app drawer bg dark gray, was blue.
Addded custom solution to missing samsung widgets item.

IMPORTANT PS:
I attempted to make this mod for the sole reason to make TW3 launcher fit the spica at first install. DO NOT expect me to update this frequently, DO NOT expect me to fix any errors that may occur from using this mod. Mainly because I'm not capable to do so. I'm not really a developer, just did this as test. Feedback is welcome though.
IMPORTANT PSS:
I would appreciate you to download my releases only from links I provide, and linkback to the original posts it was posted on. Don't bother posting mirrors or posting in other forums on my behalf. Thanks.
Please other mdpi unit owners test and feedback!
Thanks and enjoy!

Nice. Great to hear from non-spica owners. Do spread the word. ^^
Great job! Works perfect on my Hero
Seeing as you've been digging around with the Launcher do you know if it's even possible to get the widgets working with it, if they were ported over?
Don't know how to do that yet. I'll let the real experts do it instead. If a port is here, I'll see what I can do.
do i flash in adb or in amon_ra ? i like the look of touch wiz.
Sorry for asking such a nooby question, but how do we install this? Should we flash it or install with ADB or somthing?
I'm trying to install on my Spica with samdroid mod.
I believe you will just copy the .apk to your memory card and have a file manager open and install it for you.. Make sure you disable the option that only apps on market can be installed on your phones settings..
This is installable. You can also push via adb to /system/app if you like works fine too like that. Or create a custom recovery zip and apply under recovery specifically samdroidmod recovery.

is there a apk file?
Work great for me. Thanks you.

[MORPH] Naked TouchWiz App Menu 8/3/10

This was created for the Vibrant, but I see no reason why it would not be compatible with the Captivate. Enjoy.
This Metamorph will remove the colored tiles from the TouchWiz3.0 app menu. Make sure you are using the latest version of Metamorph (1.9.13 or higher). I'm not responsible for anything you do to your phone.
WARNING:
You will have to reset your homescreen widgets after applying this morph. Not sure why, but they will all pop up with the "Problem loading widget" image.

What do you mean? Are you trying to go back to stock?
If you're talking about the widgets. Just drag them to the trash and re-apply them if you get the "Problem loading Widget" box.

I guess I am doing something wrong. I thought that was part of the process because I loaded the zip in morph and my backgrounds didn't change. I didn't see the apply all button. It is all good. I guess I am used to things loading after clicking the one button. Still new to android lol.
This is exactly what I was looking for, but I can't get it to work with metamorph. The error is the following:
"The theme you selected is invalid because the theme control file could be missing, or is not correctly written (contact theme creator)."
My metamorph version 1.9.8.14
Select "Pick existing theme" navigate to the EVO_Blackbar folder (Should be in /sdcard/AndroidThemes/ and select EVO_Blackbar_v1.3.xml. It should work. If you downloaded it from your phone, the names get messed up and cause that problem.
Is there any way to add the backgrounds to another launcher? Like Launcher Pro or ADW or something?
I love the uniformity and the aesthetics of the nice uniform grid.
There are still some stock apps with tiles behind them. Is it possible to remove those as well?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
OO I like this theme, may have to try it out when I get home. I'm one of the few people who actually likes touchwiz, makes it feel more familiar (I came from an iphone 3gs)
Not trying to thread jack or anything but I see everyone including major reviews complaining about touchwiz. Whats so bad and different about it compared to stock android. What are somethings you would recommend I changed to stock for?
I know our menu system is slide right or list instead of pull up.
(I like it better that way cause you can customize it)
We have the 3 customizable of 4 buttons on the bottom of the screen.
(Better use of real estate)
Our system and menu is black with white highlight but doesn't it make more sense considering the display and black using less battery.
(saves battery/ I modded my whole system to black menus pull downs and such)
And finally the backgrounds on Icons.
(At least its uniform, have you seen some of the ugly Icons people make)
Froyo compatibility
For what it's worth, I morphed this over Cognition 2.2 beta 5.5 and it seems to have worked just fine. I'm not sure if anything else has changed, but I've gotten rid of those ugly tiles I imagine it would work for any of the JI6 ROMs....
Installed on stock JH7, works just fine.

You get 3 icons instead of Four (or even five).
That's the big problem I have with TouchWiz... I can't put Phone, Messaging, Email and Browser in the dock.

You don't need the SPB launcher to get that theme. The 3D stuff in the middle is just that certain launcher. What you want is the notification bar theme right? I don't have it myself, as I don't use those themes, but I would suggest using the UOT kitchen and you can cook it yourself. It's pretty easy to figure out and get your own themes up and running.
http://uot.dakra.lt/
I took some time and threw together what I THINK you're looking for... it was actually quite a bit more work than I thought it would be, but I just tested this out on my Nexus S (i9020a) on the latest CM7.1 Nightly (b. 180) and it worked fine.
I'd recommend backing up your Androidian.apk just in case something goes wrong, or even a full nand backup. You'll need to push this apk to /system/app and make sure permissions are set properly.
Here's what I did to set it:
1 - Use Root Explorer (or another file manager with root access) and go to /system/app
2 - Make sure the directory is mounted as RW
3 - Rename Androidian.apk to Androidian.apk.bak
4 - Browse to where you saved the modified APK on your SDCard and Copy/Move the modified apk to /system/app
5 - Set permissions (rw-r--r--)
6 - Reboot phone.
7 - Once phone is back up, go to Theme Manager and select Androidian.apk and apply.
8 - Hope it works for you like it did for me
I really like this a LOT. I've been thinking about requesting for it too. Can I add to the request please?
@tehgeekguy - Can you modify it further to remove the horizontal dividers in lists? Especially in sms and the menu lists. Pretty much like Minimalbread and Lucid. Please?

I THINK I got what you're wanting. I attached two screenshots with what I've managed so far. This will basically remove those bars from anywhere they'd normally show up (Settings menus, Messaging app, pop up menus, etc...). The screenshots show the Settings menu and the Power menu (I clear my messages daily so nothing in Messages to show but a black window).
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten it to work in a theme yet, but I can get it working with a morph, or you can yank the files and merge them manually if you know how, it's not too difficult. I'll keep poking around the theme files and see if I can get this put into the one I uploaded earlier. The morph is NoDividers.zip (attached).
WOW! This $hi+$ AMAZING! I can't THANK YOU enough! Best thing about this morph is that I can use ANY theme without those pesky dividers! Really NEAT man!
I really recommend this to anyone who love David's MinimalBread and Sonny Sekhon's Lucid.

Mihome And the app drawer .[Just an Idea]

Ok , this may be too simple and silly idea. you may have already done this . but just sharing which might come handy if you haven't figured out how to manage lots of app on the Mihome ..
workaround for the app drawer :
Just put all apps in one folder and place the folder on the dock in the middle , name the folder Apps , and there is a plus symbol where you can pre select apps to add in the folder (you dont have to move every single app to the folder) , just select all the apps and .. Ta -Da ..
Here is the MIhome with app
drawer

Hehe, I personally did something alike on my MIUI. Similar that is.
The fact that MIUI launcher lacks drawer is an interesting concept for some and a pain for others that are used having a drawer for everything and using home screen just for a few things. I think there was a launcher based on MIUI launcher that offered a drawer, but a little different. Far as I remember the items showed up "listed" instead of grid, but I think that was pretty much it.
I don't think they will ever implement a drawer since its one of their visual trademarks

miui is like ios but with the functionality and customizations of android .. But the incomplete translation is just too much irritating..
Somewhat agree. Not as far as iOS because we can't distinguish an OS by the lack of drawer, but yeah, I always had a feeling MIUI and iOS shared a similar user experience on the home screen level. Perhaps goes a little further like settings (allowing customizing app options on the settings that is). MIUI is unique in a way, but very "this is pretty much it" on the other hand. The themes are a big plus otherwise I wouldn't see anything special. I hope they add some more features or customization options, but I get the feeling they are marching slowly implementing new things.
To be honest, the concept of an app drawer was always something I never quite understood ever since I stated using android.
Pressing that app drawer button is just one step more to access my apps. It just slows me down. Sure, I have my favourite apps, but putting then on the home screen leaves a duplicate in the app drawer. Now I have them twice. Makes no sense.
MIUI just simplifies that and at the same time gives me the ultimate freedom how I want to organise my apps.
The home screen in MIUI is a real "home" screen as I can put my most used apps there. Lesser used apps I put 1 screen right, or left, or in a folder. Heck, folders to categorise apps makes sense in MIUI, making folders on a regular android home screen? Nope. When these apps are not important, why even pull them out of the drawer?
Actually, can anybody give one reasonable argument why having an app drawer is better/easier/faster compared to the MIUI launcher?

When you have 150 apps and dont feel like putting all of them in folders or looking at a sea of apps on your main screen.

I actually feel it's the other way around. When you have less than 50 apps it's easier to navigate thru a single app drawer; but when you have more than 150 it's easier to navigate when apps are separated by folders and you categorize them intuitively.

Which is why we're both using android and have a choice in what we prefer and what works best for each of us.
