It depends on the type of update, some are full updates which will wipe your phone (including removing root), some are incremental which will just replace some system files.
You can find out which though by going through the update process. If the uprade will wipe your phone you will get a warning stating so.
As for you wanting to go back to stock, you can simply download a stock rom from here on XDA, flash with smartflash, and you will be back to completely stock.

[Q] Invalid software package when trying to update my phone

Hi guys!
I noticed today that there were a system update for my optimus 2x.
But after it downloaded it said validating software package and returned an error stating that the package was invalid..
Has anyone else bumped into this problem? Is it because my phone is rooted?
It is otherwise stock.
Thank you so much for your help!

Okay.
So can i ask how do i unroot the phone using CWM?
I looked at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021554&page=2
it talks about installing a recovery.zip using CWM, but will it unroot the phone or not?
Thanks!
The name says it all and it is sticky in dev section...
{START HERE} ROLL UP THREAD - Guides, ROMs, Kernels
0. Read
1. Root following TrymHensen`s guide
2. Install DjangoManouche
3. Hit thanks to all of devs around for making this phone a racket
4. Sit back and enjoy
Hi and thanks for the answer!
you see, my phone is already rooted. I need to unroot it in order to get the latest update from LG installed on my phone.
The reason for this is that when i download the update OTA and try to install it, i get an error message stating that i have a invalid software package.
And the reason for this as i understand, is that the phone is rooted.
i have read the roll up thread you linked to, but it does not state anywhere how to unroot the phone. And thats what i need help to do
Use smartflash and put some older version on it, then update it to current version. It will be unrooted.
Thank you for the answer, will try that!
But im struggling a bit to find the older versions though. The links to them are either down or broken. I need the EUR version.
You can flash stock v20q via cwm. If you said that your phone is rooted, install cwm and then flash this stock v20q.
If you want to downgrade, then update using lg update tool, you need smartflash and some older firmware like Euro v10d.
You need to read and search, really, all is here on the site.
At least press the thanks button if my posts are helping you, it is right here.
Thank you for the reply.
I will flash with the v20q one you mentioned. Its the version im trying to upgrade to anyway, så this seems better instead of downgrading it to stock, then upgrading using OTA!

[Q] How to upgrade, Kies and OTA not working.

Alright so here goes, I was rooted on GB and I didn't get an OTA notification, so I unrooted (using the latest Open Europe GB stock rom) and I still didn't get an OTA notification. So i went into Kies, updated the it to the latest version before plugging my phone in, and now it says that my device does not support updating via Kies. Is there any way to get official ICS without rooting again (I'm giving the phone to my mom, and when I was rooted there were one too many issues with stability and usability).
You can use PC Odin to get ICS.
Okay, where can I get the rom for it, and will it void the warranty (I know that rooting also does, but I unrooted and I want to have my mom just be able to send it off for repair rather than having me go over there, unroot or do whatever needs to be done before sending it away).

Look under the Android Development category for DrKetan's thread with stock ROMs. You can download a non-rooted ICS, I think. And if its not rooted it won't put a triangle on the screen or mess with the binary counter.
Sorry, i know this is a noobish question, but i got kind of confused. When I odin the rom, should I unzip it or not? When I unzip it, then it gives me the md5 (which I know how to flash) but also a .dll so what should I do with that?
Hello There
Try to reinstall the kies with the update version in the official site.
just follow the instructions in Dr. ketan's thread, he even has screen shots for the procedure.

Unable to update Galaxy Note N7000

Hello,
I'm currently living in Chile and apparently Chile released the version 4.0.4. I tried updating my android version through kies and the phone updater and no luck :/ My phone is rooted and the kernel is [email protected]#2. I'm not sure if the inability to update is due to the fact I used a kernel from another country other than Chile (I think I used an Indian Kernel). Is there a way I can go back to the my original kernel and unroot to update normally? I also have the urge to unroot my phone since my music player has been crashing too often and feel that the problem originates from the rooting.
Note: I am a very new user and I don't know most, if not all, terms such as flashing.
Help is very much appreciated,
-Kathy
Why don't you directly update it from here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download the rom and flash it via mobile odin pro or pc odin As simple as that
Thank You! But...
Is there a way I can unroot my phone? Like going back to how I got my phone? Why isn't my phone able to update normally?

Download the rom from above given thread and flash it using pc odin, you will be automatically unrooted
U cant possibly update due to a different version of kernel

When I flash my phone do I need a Pit file? Will this wipe all my music, apps, contacts, etc...? If I use a original chilean rom then my phone will be unrooted right?
Sorry for asking so many questions >.<

You don't need PIT files. Just Select rom file under PDA tab. No need to change any option. Just Start Flash.
And it will not erase your data on sdcard (internal or external)
Cheers
You need to backup your contacts, msgs and apps
Hope I am not to late, would be best to make efs backup before proceding, so you can always return to chili working rom. Its a backup of e.g. imei which is not easy to recover if accidentally lost.
How see toolbox thread dr ketan in general section. You need root for that. Save in multiple locations

How to?

What's up everyone. I'm about to sell my galaxy mini and I want to ask how to clear everything in it, I mean uninstall CWM, how to install stock rom and clear the whole data so it won't say anything about it's previous roms and etc, is it possible?
Yes, it is possible. Flash a Stock ROM with Odin and clear user data and cache in stock recovery.
Could you explain what should I do now, when I got custom rom CM10 installed and I want to install stock? Should I clean data and cache or etc throught CWM? And how to remove CWM, to make the phone look as it never been modified.
flash stock rom with odin, everything will be back to out of box state.
I don't want to look lame, but which stock rom would you suggest, best performance/battery life. Also, drop me a link too.
latest one, most likely for your region, here is the link. now search there.

only stall the stock rom via odin 2.3.6 or 2.2 search on web and download what your prefer , later only install via odin and enjoy you phone:good:

pick any europe rom, about second question if kies icon is present next to download link, then yes (it actually means that this update is available in kies, but you get the point)
Mmmm, could you drop me a link with a guide how to flash stock rock via ODIN please? Would be really cool.

You cannot update to lollipop using twrp.
It has to be done using odin.
If you want to stay 100% stock and rooted then you need
to odin flash twrp and cf-autoroot.
If you want to flash a custom lollipop rom then you will
need to odin flash lollipop official firmware and odin
flash twrp.
All custom roms are pre-rooted so no need to root them.
Good luck!

Thanks.. So can I just straight up update from what I'm on now?
Just put phone in download mode and update via Odin correct?
Will this erase my stuff internal memory? Movies/pictures
Yes you can. You should back up your stuff though because you'll want to do a factory reset or erase data to get the best results with lollipop.
Although, I did all that and I've got my movies and pictures.

Be sure you get the proper version of the lollipop N910T tmobile
firmware from a reliable source like http://sammobile.com and
flash it using odin.
Before flashing new firmware it's always best to do a factory reset first.
Back up all your important stuff first.
Good luck!

That's totally safe.
I just odin flashed.
I didn't erase data till I flashed my rom.
Admittedly within a minute of going through the process.
Mega's instructions are good. You just stop at 5

You need to navigate in odin and find the location where you saved the firmware file.
There is a box next to the PDA slot and you need to click it and use it to locate the file.
Good luck!

Yes it's perfectly safe and doing it that way you will not loose any data,
passwords or settings.
It also is a lot faster than downloading the firmware file.
I am not sure if rooting makes a difference, when I updated using kies
it worked fine for me, kies did tell me that I have un-official firmware
but it gave me the option to continue which I did without any issues.
With kies it takes less than 1/2 the time for it to complete the download and
install/update the firmware compared to a standard download and flash..
Good luck!
