Battery Life? - LG Revolution

Is anyone noticing ridiculously bad battery life? About a week ago it started along with what i noticed to be Verizon throttling data. Could the throttled data be the cause? I'm talking 1030a, 89% battery. Then at 430p 13% battery with the screen off and no use. I mean not even pressed the unlock button once. The background info has been the same and rooted with apps removed since day i got it.
What are you guys experiencing?
Little Buddy Sr.

yeah my battery life sucks too. even with juice defender set on aggressive, it still sucks. it's better, but not much better. unplugged today at 10am and now at 56% at 730pm. that's with minimal texting and calling use and absolutely no browsing the web (not even fb app).

Still though that's 3.5 hours longer and used half the battery. And i didnt do anything for those six hours. Like basically that's a stand by time for six hours. That's a new level for bad haha
Little Buddy Sr.

7:30am - 100%
3:00am - 15% very lite usage. 1 call, some text msg, couple of responds to words with friends, lite email.
I'm rooted, running the decrapifed 1.0, adw ex launcher.

wow that's pretty bad.
still have JD set on aggressive. planning to use my phone as i normally would today and not paying mind to battery. we'll see how JD does in an average day situation. guys, try Juice Defender and post your results.

Well most days i unplug at 6:30 am and with normal usage i have 30-40% left around 9 pm...for me that's great battery on a 4g phone

that's with no help of any sort (ie midday charging, JD, turning off data)?

You mentioned data throttling...? I am new to vzw how does their "unlimited" data work...?

My battery has been great since I got the phone but last night 4G went live here in Albany NY. Since then I've noticed my batt has been groping much faster now lol.. I'm not running juice defender either but ill have to look into it now and see if it helps me out. I did pull 10 mbps download on 1 bar of 4G signal.

I believe you can switch your network to CDMA for 3g which helps with battery life..also dont leave wifi turned on OR bluetooth if you dont use it..task killer works damn well..makes my browser a bit quicker as well

Speaking of battery life....everytime I hit task killer it's always killing 17-20 apps... even when I'm not really doing anything what is the deal with that? How do I get this thing to stop running so much **** I don't even need...

I have also not been too thrilled with the battery life on the Revolution. It probably doesn't help that in my house the 4G is borderline and drops in and out constantly. I found a $30 extended battery on Amazon, so I'll give that a shot.
But the real reason that I'm posting is because I've been trying to "thank" thecubed ever since I got the phone. I haven't been able to figure out how and I finally found a post that said that you have to not only register, but also post something yourself before the thank button will show up.

Get an extended battery
there are extended batteries out there that are rated at 3000mah....this would give you a lot more talk time and standby time. Try one Good luck!

Are you rooted? If so, you can use Titanium Backup to freeze apps. Also, within Android, there are tons of triggers and events. For instance, when you start your phone, these apps open, when you connect to wifi, these apps open. Within TB, you can freeze a lot of the crap. Also, there is a program called Autostarts I really like a lot. Not well known, but great none the less. It will show you all the triggers and events. You can disable them there too. Do some reading and know what your are disabling, but why would you want Slacker to load every time connection status changes, right? Good luck, and if you need more help our want a detailed walkthrough, I can help you out with that.

Do a Google search for "Android Task Killers" and you'll find all kinds of articles explaining how these apps actually make the Android OS use more battery. There is a good one from LifeHacker that explains it in depth.
So if you're running a task killer, stop... The constant killing and restarting of apps will use more cpu cycles and drain your battery more. Android doesn't use any battery to hold an app in memory. They will launch faster, and use less CPU (which is what drains battery) if they are already in memory than if they are not. You're better off to have your memory full. I killed ATK a couple months ago after reading several posts by Cyanogen, and I not only got better battery life but also increased stability.
Second thing is try Juice Defender. I installed the Ultimate version of it and spent about an hour getting it all configured and my battery went from 100% at 8:00am and 20% at 6pm to 100% at 8:00am and 70% at 6pm with regular email checking a little web surfing, and a couple of short phone calls. I was pleasantly surprised with how well JD works.
De-crapified rom helps too. Thanks TheCubed!

Battery Life- An experiment

Anderson Did an experiment to see how far the battery life can last on normal usage. The battery power was monitored using the app "Battery Monitory Widget"
And he came to the conclusion that The battery life could well last more than 2 days if you use just the communication tools (whatsapp, Facebook, sms) on a 2G network. With heavy data usage, the battery power got zapped out rather quickly.
You can have a look at the full experiment
optimus2x.net/index.php?topic=907.0
I'm kind of experimenting in this too..
Today i unplugged my phone this morning (6am) and its dropped to 97% now @ (3pm).
So thats only 3% in 9 hours..
I use Facebook widget which updates + Twitter widget same setting (both auto update every hour)
I sent about 10 text messages (also received about that amount) and made 1 phone call (about 3 minutes)
All this on 3G network, i dont save on 2G/3G setting
2G coverage is very suboptimal in Switzerland, especially if you are using a Sunrise.ch contract. Their 2G performance with Edge is about 100kbit/s for download. This is a joke. I am not able to use a phone with 2G and enjoy it. Therefore whenever possible I have to switch on 3G (which is of course also not great, but at least it is much faster).
Therefore, 2G is not an option at all for me.
I am running stock on mine and I seem to at least have found some form of "battery" drain. Trying to reproduce the usage.
But I charged my phone fully, and then restarted it and "at the moment" it is holding its power sorta alright. But when I use it normally it lasts like 7-8 hours before needing a recharge, even if its just laying on my desk and not being touched.
Ok testings done. These figures are after a reboot and where I have more or less left the phone laying on my table only having a short call, and otherwise reading a few emails and responding to a few texts. The entire time autosync was on, as well as 3G Data.
1H30M -08%
5H30M -30%
8H20M -50%
11H00M -68%
12H15M -74%
13H08M -79%
14H15M -85%
15H20M -93%
At which point I stopped the test and then put my phone in the charger. Tomorrow once it is done charging I will start up all the stuff I normally run on it, charge it to full and see how well it does there when I am not using the phone at all. Quite frankly I expect a large difference simply because that is what I have seen, but starting program and then exiting said programs and leaving the phone on standby "should" not impact consumption in my view at least.
I think there is something bad with my battery, because Battery Monitor Widget says that my battery is a 1200 not 1500, without doing nothing at all it lose 1% per hour and suddenly in 10mins drops like 6%, so in 8hs aprox from 86% goes to 68% (the phone doing nothing)
I have 3G always active, whatsapp and gmail, just that. Will try to do the test again with 2G, but what I don´t understand is why it says 1200 instead 1500.
Should I get a new battery? could be deffective this one?

CM7 is the best for me
CM7 seems to be really good for me, i used 28% of it with medium-heavy use (no games, but wifi always on and a lot of playing about with) in 5 hours and at night i lost 3% in 7 hours sleep with 3G on. Not fully stable but seems better than sacrificing the smartness of my smartphone.
Lost 0% 2 days ago when sleeping for 9-10 hours i think
Today i lost 1% when sleeping for 9-10 hours
I am using 2g since i don't have 3g connection in my house.
It's a bit unstable but battery improvement is more important for me then some little bugs

My battery lasts 8-12 hours depending on how bad I beat on it.
My active days, I listen to music, play suduko, check xda, play in the market. Listen to tune in radio.
That said. I don't know if that is short. I think it's pretty long, and am happy with it. I have the decrapified rom, love it. I have App Killer by Rechild set on a widget. So I go in set what I want it to regularly kill, and tap the widget through out the day. It's mostly my android process that hogs the battery according to widgetsoid.

does juicedefender help a lot?
12 hours seems like a long day and good amount of hours. i hear task killers are bad for your phone though
I was averaging 9-12 hours with decrapified 1.1 depending on use. JuiceDefender extended that another 1-2 hours but added 4-6 seconds before I get 4G back when the device "wakes up". It turns the radio off and I have it set to ping instead of constantly syncing. 3G comes on 1st, then 4G...

Sounds ridiculous but i turn airplane mode on when i'm not using the phone. Turn it off every couple hrs to see if i got any emails or texts or something. Huge battery savings. I have the accurate battery mod posted in the dev forum so if i wake it up after sitting for an hr it's down 5% if i leave airplane mode off, but if i turn it on, it's down like 1%... maybe.
Once cm7 is available, we will see huge battery improvements, i have no doubt. Gingerbread is much better w/ the battery than Froyo. I saw huge improvements between cm6 and cm7 nightlies on my droid, to the tune of 200% standby improvements. Still heavy use i wouldn't expect more than 15 hrs, but imo 10 hrs is ridiculous. There's not really a huge difference between heavy and light use in battery time either.

good to know! thanks. when is cm7 available for the revo?
Thecubed is currently working on it.
Buy an extra battery and wall charger off eBay... Throw the battery in your back pocket, and you're set all day. I swap the battery out after about 8 hours (when I get to about 20% battery) and I'm good the rest of the day. I've had to do this with EVERY Android phone I've purchased. The OG Droid would only get me about 10 hours right when I got it, but Undervoltage Kernels, and decent Rom's brought it up to around 16 hours on the standard battery. The Samsung Fascinate was horrible - Roughly 6-7 hours out of the box. Rom's got it up to around 12. The Droid Pro - 8 hours at most on the standard battery, never saw any improvements with my usage. Droid 2 - 10 hours out of the box, but when CM7 came out on it, I was averaging around 16 hours before I got the Revo. The 8 hour battery life didn't surprise me. I kinda expected it, and had already placed my battery/charger order before I went and got the phone. I'm not a fan of extended batteries just because of the extra bulk, plus finding a case w/an extended battery is a PITA. And the 3 minute downtime from a battery swap really isn't that bad (especially if you've ever had a Blackberry).

Agreed, I don't buy from overseas with the battery but the charger really doesn't matter. I got a genuine LG battery for $19 and then just a generic charger for it for $8. Knock on wood I haven't had any problems with the chargers I've gotten, but I don't trust generic batteries either.

GPS settings for bionic (UNL3ASH3D)

Look, every day or so I dig through the Unl3ash3d threads praying to find some magical fix to my battery drain issue.
I've tried to convince myself its just the 1% messing with my mind but I can't keep living a lie. My battery drained this morning 10% in under an hour with me not even touching it (screen off).
My engineering mind goes into troubleshooting mode. Seems like some are having battery problems and some are not.
What has everyone chosen during set up for the location settings? I think it gives the options, google, verizon, our stand alone.
Could this be the culprit?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
And before anyone asks, yes I calibrated battery. Did it manually the first two times without any improvement then I even used the silly app in the market that does it for you.
GPS is never actually using power unless an app is using it (and you'll see the location icon in the notification bar). I would turn off any apps that use GPS in the background, but I wouldn't worry about it otherwise.

I was having the battery drain issues, but they seemed to get fixed after I re calibrated , and let it fully die before I charged it.
I have mine in a custom batter profile. the radio is set to turn off after 15 minute of no activity.
5h, 5m on batter at 86% right now.
Sent out couple texts, couple apps updated like weather, made a few short voice calls.
Screen brightness is all the way down.
I remember I used to use the "ondemand" scaling setting for the cpu, that seemed to help with power, if its that big of a concern (you will have to deal with potential random restarts tho).
Maybe try re wiping and re flashing? Or start eliminating apps?

My stock battery ran down by about 10 hrs for me and my use and I have BW installed too. I bought the extended and now i'm still at 70% at 10PM when I plug it in for the night. Everything else is default settings. I check 2 emails accounts, twitter, facebook, talk, skype and voice constanly. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Good luck.
But I hate the camera, it sucks.
You do realize that once your battery hits full charge the phone stops charging and starts feedinding off the battery until you unplug the phone and reconnect it. So one you active your phone in the morning it was probably charged a good 6 hours before that point and during that time it was draining the battery so you get thaf sudden drop first thing. I dont think most people realize thjs.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
They design the charging system like this on purpose. If the phone kept recharging every time the battery dropped a couple percent it would kill the battery very fast. Batteries have a limited amount of charging cycles before they are no goodeverytime you go into a charging phase that subtracts a cycle.so if it did this 30 times a night you can see the problem. I would not worry about that ten percent and instead track the last 90 percent and see how much lief that gives you. I will bet its on par with most others.

Should be in General not Development, And why don't you just shut the phone off until you go to work?
You can try: Setting the CPU lower with an apk like CPU master, CPU set, ROM toolbox, ect.... Turn down the brightness of your screen. .. Uninstall some of the apk that are always running in the background... Turn off LED message alert. Stop using apks like advanced task killer (unless you custom set it up to not kill system vital apk.) Turn off 4g unless in an area that has strong 4g sig. Recalibrate your battery after a full charge. Install GingerVolt 2.0. Buy extended battery (still $25 @ vzw website)
There are many different things you can do to get more battery life out of your phone... Look in the GingerVolt forum and check out where others have done. But get a custom to bringing your charger everywhere you go.

Not just turn off 4G but turn off data and wifi. These 2 radios are constantly working. The more time with them off the longer the battery will last.

My own experience and take is that daily battery life depends on good cell signal. I live at the fringe between three cell sites. My signal is typically two bars or less. At work I have a similar situation, but shielded by building opposite the cell side.
I always stay plugged in because my battery is always being used otherwise. My guess is that people who report much greater battery life are lucky enough to be in areas with good signal strength.
As an example, this morning I got up 1.5 hours ago, took the phone off the wall charger, rebooted it and used it a bit during my morning prep. I left home an hour ago with the phone plugged in to the car charger for 20 minutes (which charges at the lower USB rate). I have been at work for 40 minutes off charger since and now have 90% left on my EXTENDED battery.
At home reception is 3G most of the time. Work 4G.

We are hearing battery life is much improved on ZV8, so maybe that will help too with the next GV release....

I've got the same problem he has except it got worse after I went to Gingervolt 2.0. From what I've read on here it seems that not wiping date may have something to do with that so once he gets the new update incorporated into Gingervolt I'll be doing a complete wipe and trying from there.

Work 4G.

Sounds like you're killing the battery by always staying plugged in. I go about 11-14 hours a day on 3G (no 4G in my area) with stock battery with moderate use

+1 to that, my standard battery made it 16 hours today, and I live between two mountains where service is spotty and my phone continuously switches between 3g and 4g

Killing a battery by keeping it topped off or cycling it. Which is the greater evil? This type of battery has a number of discharge life cycles. So, stressing by keeping the voltage at max or consume those life cycles? I don't know, but I certainly want to have it most available, and keeping it charged works for me. Some people don't let their fuel tanks go less than 1/2.
In the end, I have way more battery, extended and spares, to care if keeping it charged up is hurting the battery because I only have it until the next upgrade in a year.
Ideally, I would prefer to change the charge scheme so it wouldn't run the charge voltage so high maybe to 95%, to protect the battery further. But, in my time frame, doesn't matter.

I run JuiceDefender Ultimate and it helps quite a bit. I'm using it in aggressive mode on Gingervolt 1.3 ROM, and ran it with stock before that.
I personally don't think hes killed the battery.
I have two because they gave me a special on docking station that came with an extra battery when I bought the phone. Anyway I sleep during the day because I work night shift. If my battery is almost dead I pop a new one in before bed otherwise its at about 97 percent after I got home from work. When I wake up 5-8 hours later I've lost almost 50 percent. Sometimes more from either battery.
I check the batter usage stats and Android System is up at about %97 percent...
I have all notifications turned off except Gmail and theres no WiFi or anything.

I'm loosing abt 20% over that same time period letting JuiceDefender manage things.

What has your battery life been like so far?

I just got the phone yesterday. I've been using it VERY heavily, and I havent been cycling it properly.
But I just got 4.5 hours of pretty heavy use out of it. That's nothing close to what it should be. But it was constant 4G use almost the whole time.
I'm trying to cycle it properly now. but I cant stop running around long enough to get a full charge on it. (once so far).

Use the SmartActions App. It has a battery Extender that works very well.
I have it along side Juice Defender. I Constantly stay under 4G LTE, and I have wifi on. I could probably let a video loop for 7 hours before it died.
This is after two-three days of cycling and training juice defender.
I despise battery chatter, but I have to say that I have been using this thing hard setting up my apps downloading off the cloud and surfing the net. 10+ hours on a single charge. Not many voice calls, but lots of screen on time and data.
Your mileage will vary.
Its about on par with a galaxy nexus with ics

I'm lucky if I get 7 hours of moderate use, with the smart actions. I think I might have to exchange it and get a new one and try to cycle the battery better the first few times. I was not kind to it on the first day.
I also work in a place with minimal 4g coverage. So it's struggling the whole. time
Suggestions, before I replace it? (with another)

I'm a pretty heavy user. Bluetooth in ear streaming music while i ride my bike to work, lots of news widgets updating between 20 and 45 minutes each, constant emails and social networking, and a few bt calls. The phones battery lasts me 4 to 6 hours, depending on number of calls. Luckily i have one of those battery pack things.

Sounds very similar to my own usage. I've avoided using bluetooth so far, and I try to download music before i leave. It gives me a bunch of extra time. And I've got the battery pack, but it wont give me much.
But I've managed to cycle my phone twice today. That's not okay.
I cant wait for root so I can wipe the battery stats and try again.
Wiping battery stats does nothing for battery life. Its just stats!

I think there might have been a quality check error on the Atrix HD batteries that shipped out.
Everyone I know gets different battery stats.
I know I'm getting excellent battery life. I can watch movies, surf the web, and play games... leave it off the charger and I'll still have 40% for the next day.
It took a day or two. The first two days I let it die before charging. Juice Defender takes a good day to figure out your phone, but it plays nice with Smart Actions.
Also, some gameloft games do not play nice with the phone stand by and sleep states. Gun Bros would send notifications and run in the background and drained my battery on my MAHD.
