[Q] Using mobile SIM card to get internet? - Dell Streak 7

So i'm definately thinking about getting a tablet, and know the G-Slate and Dell Streak 7 take SIM cars and 4G. I was thinking if instead of making my phone a hotspot, if there's a hack out there to allow my HTC Sensation 4G's sim card to work in one of these tablets or that the T-Mobile rep i called was just lying.
The reason I think he's lying is because a few weeks ago, i used my SIM in my dad's Samsung Tab and i was able to use Messages. I had WiFi, so i didnt bother to try the internet. I can't try that now because my rebate won't be "validated" says my dad, who used to work for T-Mobile.
Anyway, has anyone tried a mobile data plan SIM Card in their tab? If it requires a hack, please link it because i can't find it :/
Also, what would you pick?
G-Slate or Streak 7?

Doesnt work I tried it in my streak, redirects you to the tmobile website, streak can nativly send text messages as well as the tab, the 3/4g versions at least, just not phone calls

So I either have messaging or internet via hotspot from my phone. Thanks for clearing that up for me

dell streak data plan questions

So im thinking of picking one of these up, and can buy from dell directly and get a pretty good discount through my employer. I am wondering if these are going to be like the galaxy tab and not be able to use a voice and data plan sim. I dont want to add a line, or go prepaid for the data plans. Any thoughts
The Streak 7 does not have voice calling, only VOIP. There are ways around it with Google Talk, but you will have to see the phone.apk thread and follow the lengthy instructions. For all intents and purposes though, the answer is no. The data plan from T-Mobile is 49.99 a month for UNLIMITED or 39.99 if you are an existing customer.
You are correct. Voice plans do not work on the Streak 7. You have to have a data plan. This was a major bummer for me. I use a prepaid voice plan. On my Streak 5, I could buy a day pass for data for $1.50. That doesn't work on the 7. Technical support said that the network detects this device as a data device because it sends a mac address to the network rather than an IMEI(?) number. So you must buy the weekly or monthly prepaid data plans to use data on the device. I use mine mostly at home, so all I need is the occassional day pass, but no can do.

It does also send an IMEI by the way, but it also sends the MAC address, just as all phones with internet capabilities do. If you open up the door on the side you will see the IMEI number for you device.
One big disadvantage of not having a voice and data line on it and them making it web only (webconnect) = NO ROAMING OF ANY KIND! It's t-mobile native service or nothing. It doesn't even work on t-mobile affiliates like i wireless. (who has aws 3g running in areas).
I buy this tablet to have internet access everywhere, but end up using the wifi hotspot of my hd2 when i travel. Grrr!
Im getting this delivered today, would it benefit me to put my Voice/data plan sim in it or keep the web connect sim in it?
thanks
Lou
Lou,
I think I have read elsewhere in the S7 forums that a voice/data SIM will not work. Hiya have to have the data only SIM included wither the S7. I think...

Youre right might voice data sim won't work. I did how ever get outbound calling working. But can't figure out inbound calling.

4G on T-Mobile Galaxy Tab

As most of you may know, a T-Mobile Galaxy Tab will not allow you to insert a SIM card from a phone and use it for data, even if you already have an Android data plan on your account and on that number. Bought a new tab from a private owner, and was pissed off about that. However, I have a G2, and remembered something I had configured on my phone.
So, I found an easy way to resolve this. My G2 does 4G. Instead of putting the sim into the Galaxy Tab, I enabled the wifi hotspot feature and used that to connect the Tab to the Internet. At 4G speeds. On my unlimited data plan. For free. Saves me more than a grand/yr (assuming the $85/mo+taxes cost of the 10gb/mo plan which I don't have to pay).
Take =that= T-Mobile. Bet your greedy, beady-eyed beancounter (read "Business Prevention Officer") boys didn't think about =that= one... <chuckle>
I know this is an old thread, but I just did not want people to be discouraged from buying this awesome tablet because of misinformation.
There is an alternative solution.

Can't get my Tmobile sim to work in my Tmobile Streak 7, need help!

Just purchased a used Tmobile dell streak 7. It is stock and has been reset to all factory settings. The wifi works and everything looks to be ok. I got a tmobile sim card with a 2gig mobile broad band data plan. I know the sim is good and activiated because it works just fine in my buddy's stock tmobile g slate. When I insert it in the streak it recognizes the sim card and restarts but I cant use the interent via the sim. I went through the settings like the user manual says and turned off the wifi, I searched for networks and selected "Tmobile", then it says "registered on network" but no 4g/3g icon show up in the right corner. I just get the wireless bars with an x? I am new to tablets so maybe there is something that I am missing? I need to figure this out today because the guy I purchased it from gave me 24 hrs to try to get it working or I could just get my money back. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jared
anyone? Im running out of time here... I tried my at&t sim out of my iphone and it instantly wanted a "special code" which was expected. Could somebody have tried to enter a code too many times while using a tmobile sim card and somehow locked out the tmobile capability?

You need to call T-Mobile customer service, or go into a T-Mobile store, and have them activate the SIM card for the tablet. They have to be tied together.
EDIT: Activate it for THAT specific tablet.
is that true for all tmobile tablets because the sim works fine in a tmobile g slate and the card was not tied to that tablet in any way, but I will try

It just occurred to me that the wireless bars with an x over it could also means that someone has removed or renamed the phone.apk & telephony.apk. I don't have a t-mobile DS 7 so I cannot be certain of this, but you can check it out for yourself. Use a file manager program and go to the directory /system/app and look to see if phone.apk and telephony.apk has been renamed or removed. I have the DS7 wifi edition, and I removed these 2 app so that the DS7 does not drain the battery. My DS7 has the wireless bars with an x over it because I have removed those 2 app.
If ya need those files let me know and ill put em up..im stock t-mo rooted...
just got my streak and ill be around now

T-mobile has this device type locked down, you must have a tablet plan on your account for the SIM to give you data access (other than their site) with this device.
T-mobile sucks, stay away from them................
There an app in the market that let you use your google account to make calls
I believe the the app is call groove ip

only text & SMS message will work with a "phone plan" on the DS7 otherwise you have to have a data plan or if someone makes it a software to make your device appear as a phone on thenetwork then it would work...

[Q] help me out for using 3G on ATT Go phone

hi.
Recently i bought Galaxy Note white from Amazon. It is originally from HongKong.
and I didnt rooting. I bought a ATT Go Phone sim card and activated($50, everything unlimited),now it is working for calling and txting but web and internet is not work
even H+ is shown on top of my screen.
when I try to connect internet, it says " Media Net. To use data service, you must have a data package. go att.com/mygophone"
I already tried vary of APN setting but still not work.
Here is my question.
1) Do I have to buy another sim card? because mine isnt read 3G on sim card.
2) I have a dumphone. Should I put in my sim card to dumphone and call ATT my phone doesnt work for internet?
any other advise will be very welcome.. plz help me..
Apparently, ATT knew you have a smartphone...so your unlimited data plans are block.
I have the same problem...you can check if your dump phone can use for web.
If can't ..call the CSR with your dump phone...see they can fix it. Then try to insert the SIM again when it's fix.
If it's don't work...your have to purchase a data plan.... I got the 250 minutes for $25 and 500MB data plan for $25. And the 500MB data plan will roll over if you enrolled Auto payment every month.
Good luck
