Now that Cognition is up to 2.3 (Gingerbread), I was wondering what some thought about the pros and cons between it and Serendipity7. I'm presently on CM7, but like the idea of using stock gingerbread bootloaders and some of the Samsung apps (not so much any of the AT&T apps). But insights into ease of flashing, using CWM or Rom Manager, and merits of each would be great.
Every ROM is gonna have pros and cons.. and when you add different users to the picture.. the pros and cons change for each person. Your best bet would be to try them out for yourself and see which one you like. Likes and dislikes are gonna vary from person to person... also is the reason why these threads don't stay around long. This ROM vs. That ROM.. too many opinions. Read the changelogs.. see what this one has vs that one. Try this one for a few days, then try that one.
And since you asked, i prefer CWM over ROMManager for flashing.. but that's just me.

Thanks, I've been reading up on them both and will probably try them both out. Like you said, what's great for one might be a deal breaker for someone else. Just looking for a shortcut, maybe better that there's not one. ;-)

Hey Yall, I'm a longtime cappy user,
Have had a couple already but I have moved on to the Atrix, great phone btw,
But the cappy still holds a special place for me. Anyhow, I would like to get everyone's help in deciding roms for my Dad and Wife, Which I'm giving cappy's to as presents.
Now The main reason is that I would like to keep in touch using the gtalk voice application. (I travel alot and this is very usefull when I'm abroad).
So , in you guys oppinion, what would be the best ROM for people who don't mess with the phones and just want them to work and being able to use 2.3+
Thanks
Gabe
its all about personal preference. cant really have a 3rd party tell em whats best for them. threads like this gets closed quickly.wth that said already, there's stock 2.3.3 KF1 for i897. i think stock is best for non-phonemodders
Yeah, I tend to agree with that stock would be best. But the thing is that I think google talk voice and video capabilities are dependant on it being 2.3.4 or +.I'm not sure,
Basically I would like to know about the roms that aren't as jumpy as other. Because As I Agree with it being a personal user problem, whn my fam have phne problems it usually falls in my lap.
Thanks,
PS: I hope this tread dosen't get closed as fast as you say, I figure it's the Q/A forum, if it cant be posted here, where can it, right?

They are looked down upon. Each developer puts their own time and hard work in to their roms. And having whoever say this one is best and that one sucks is not called for. Because everyone has their own opinions and no two are the same. Same for every rom they have their differences. which people may like and may not like.
Is why i look down on best rom threads.
I respect that.
I have hoped to have worded differently where What I meant was:
The ROM that has been toughly tested, and isn't dependent of users expertise on CPU OC, Configuration Files, Knowledge of ROOT explorer, SQL Browsers, ETC. (under the hood stuff)
Something that doesn't necessarily offer all the configurations options, that might get someone in trouble, that also offers the current latest android subversion.
I guess it's too much of a complicated question for a just simple yes or no.
So I guess I'll just find myself content in have asked.
I ment no harm in my comment but,
If you don't want them messing with so so or having this or that as an option then just leave them on stock like CremeFraiche had said (And maybe with lag fix kernel, if its still around) or teach them (if they are willing to learn) what stuff means, dose, and how it works. They in turn can decide on what they would want to suit them best.
I hope some of this can help you out

I think a great fit for ur Dad and wife would be Cognition 5 v1.00
Based on the leaked I897UCKF1 Gingerbread 2.3.3
MIUI definately!!!!!
Sent from my I897 using XDA Premium App
I would say Apex 8.2 or Serendipity 7
As far as GB ROMs go, I've only tried Apex. I liked it, it has good performance and runs pretty smooth. I haven't gotten around to trying out the other GB ROMs yet so I can't say anything about them. However a rooted ROM might not be the best to go with for them. Both of my parents got Captivates so I could be their goto guy for instruction and debug. I think giving them a Rooted phone is just asking for additional trouble. I think a stock ROM with a nice theme (if you want them to be a little different) is the way to go for them.
As to which ROM to get?
So many new developers with new ROMs which is great but how do I choose which is best for me?
I'm currently on GingerReal 8.0 and it's quite slow in comparison to my other recently flashed ROMs but it's OK for now.
What I want is an overall nice ROM; speed, looks and battery life are all as important as each other for me.
What is your favourite ROM and why is it better than the others?
Thanks for your help guys
This thread is going to start a flame war !
there is no better / worse ROMs out there, they are all unique in their own little way..
The only advice i can give you (and im sure many others will agree) Is you search the development section carefully. Pick out a few ROMs you like the sound of, Flash them on your device, and have a little play...
Read the comments, see what people are saying about it, Weigh up the pro's and con's.. And make your decision based upon your results..
There are LOTS of ROMs out there, it would take a lifetime (over exaggerating) to try them all.. So its important you find a ROM that meets your expectations.
Hope this helps good luck

its the only way mate, if i was to tell you "choose MIUI its the best", Then a darky user will come over and say "No its not, darky's is the best"
And then a simply honey user says, "no mines the best"..... the list goes on, Before you know it we are all arguing like little kids...
it gets us no where... !
Have fun
It's hard to hold one rom over another. Each offer features which some want and others don't need or want.
It's especially hard at the moment, as we're in what a appears to be a very active developement firmware development cycle at Samsung.
Though in the past Darky's rom was a safe bet for beginners, offering a decent mix of extra features along with stability and speed improvements over stock roms, their roms in the gingerbread era have lacked polish.
Then we have cyanogen based roms which are independent of the samsung devlopement cycle but are for advanced flashers who like to flash every other day it would seem.
TL;DR
Pick the rom which suits you. I like Surface at the moment. It suits my needs. But i'm on the precipace of flashing a cyanogen based rom
Just say 1 2 3 4 and choose 1
+ 1 to all of the above, roms are like wine, get out and taste them
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, +1 too.
Just wanted to add that if you want a really smooth and fast phone, after reading the roms threads, I give you the advice of reading the custom kernel threads too...
The kernel is, in my opinion, the best way to have a smoother phone.
I think you can have the rom you want (design and functionalities wise) but if you want smoothness, stability and / or good battery usage, you will have to carefully choose the kernel you want...
For CM7 roms, I don't know the kernels...
But for Samsung roms, the 3 best kernels of the moment, in my opinion (because they are in active development and the devs are working really really really ****ing hard...) are Talon (performance, stability, energy), Galaxian (performance) and Semaphore kernels (stability).
Hope it will help !
I have been reading a bunch of HTC One vs S4 threads and been watching them. And I feel like everyone is making the comparisons on each stock, which makes sense. But I was wondering which is better when rooted and both having a custom rom and kernel. Since I know that having a custom rom and kernel can make the overall performance better.
For Example, people were complaining about the lag on the S4 so they switched to the One. But I feel like if those people would've have rooted it and put a custom rom or kernel, it might have helped the lag.
So which device do you guys think is better with custom rom and kernel improvements?
Which one has a bigger improvement with custom roms and kernels?
Thanks guys And if there is a thread like this comparing the roms and kernels of each device against each other, then post a link and I can ask to close this thread.
Posted this in the S4 forum as well to have opinions on both sides and not just on one side, which isn't fair.

It's not different at alllllllllllll.
It's not allowed, and everyone here will say the HTC One.
There's no point to this, promotes arguments and trolling. Don't start it.
All your questions require knowledge and use of both phones. I know a few people have both but a lot of people here haven't spent £1000 on 2 phones, so will only own the HTC One. Therefore the S4 answers will be a load of crap
I am getting tired of reading about comparisons and threads turning into arguments because of such issues. Bottom line is, devices should be fairly compared on a stock basis and not with custom ROMs or kernels. There are benchmark tests and others available online, just use Google and you'll find everything you're looking for. They are both great devices and that competition in the latest technology, features and market price are what make the world of smartphones better, which in turn benefits us.

This is not different. Please use the search feature and ask your question in an already existing thread.
To answer your questions though, I switched from the HTC One(running TrickDroid/ARHD, Bulletproof kernel) to the Galaxy S4(running WanamLite, ktoonz kernel) and now back to the HTC One(ARHD, Beastmode kernel). The HTC One has, by far, been the better experience. It's smoother, faster, and more responsive than my S4--on top of that, I actually used the "unique" features of the One(Blinkfeed, Zoe, etc) whereas on the SGS4 in an effort to smooth it out, I turned most of it's "unique" features off. Overall, I found most of it's "unique" features to be very gimmicky.
Here's what it comes down to: Neither phone is better than the other. There is no "best" phone. The closest you can get is picking a phone that has the features YOU want and that are important to YOU.
THIS THREAD IS ABOUT TELLING PROS AND CONS OF ROMS YOU HAVE USED AND NOT TO FIND OUT WHICH IS THE BEST
Hello guys!!!
I decided to have a second rom on my z1 so i want to ask you which is your favorite rom and why? before i choose
C'mon you know these threads are not allowed. Something I like will not always be something you like, just flash away and enjoy finding one YOU personally like :silly:
Well, there has been much discussion lately about this
I am going to let this one go and see where it ends up. If it ends up in trolling/flaming then I will delete and infract as needed. However, if this stays sensible, polite and we talk about the various pros and cons of the ROMS with actual facts (Not conjecture or hear say) then I say this may be worth while.
I will be watching.

As you said i just want to hear pros and cons from members who have already use them (thats why i asked "and why?") nothing more
Speaking strictly as an end user, my opinion is that even the pros and cons can come down to your intended use and personal preference. Although my experience has mostly been with the HTC One, I've recently purchased a Z1 and am awaiting its arrival. For the most part, the ROMs are the same between the devices, especially with the AOSP ROMs.
The HTC had Sense which is the stock HTC ROM. I think the parallel would be the stock ROM for Z1's and HTC One's as opposed to the Google Play or AOSP ROMS.
Some ROM's come loaded with features cooked in and some are more bare bones. I found that the bare bones were more to my liking and I ran AOKP on my HTC. It consistently ran smoothly and never hiccuped when I would run Garmin Connect to transfer data from a fitness device. Some of the others did not function quite as well in this. To be fair, the problem was with Garmin as their devices are pretty finicky. Also, my personal preference was to add in only those features I wanted instead of having them already there. Xposed allowed me to do that. Another feature I looked for was continued development on the ROM I used.
My advice is to think of ROMs as dating. Try many then try some more. Give them all some time, don't just flash a new one every day. You need to see how each one functions through your typical daily use.
That was my two cents as a user and not a dev. I will add one thing, hit the thanks button for every ROM you try and when you settle on one, make a donation. I hope this helps, I really didn't want to start naming ROM's. As soon as my Z1 arrives, I'll root it and try a couple of stock ROMs. After that I'll probably end up back with AOKP. One other thing, I actually had a stock based ROM, Maximus HD and AOKP both set up and backed up so I could switch if I felt the need.
Hi,
I want to freshen up my nokia 8 a bit and I'm thinking about flashing some custom rom. Do you have any recommendations which one i should pick?
I don't really need any special fireworks, just want to try out newer version of android BUT I do not want a ROM which will have a full page of "things that don't work" so looking for something fairly reliable (if such thing even exists lol).

From what I see here in this forum it seems that anyone is doing well. I personally have used the AncientOS 5.7 Society, 6.2 Society and now I use the Pixel Experience. There are some more that I have not tried but I can tell you that any of these 3 ROMs is perfectly suitable for daily use. Before deciding on one or the other, read the user comments carefully in the threads of each one to see the pros and cons and to know what to expect.
