I wanted to test out some 19000 roms. so i installed the 19000 reoriented kernel and loaded Juwe's Smart Edition V.5 Rom and Darky's Extreme Edition v10.1 Rom. I noticed that they are very lagy, is this normal because i have a captivate trying to run a 19000 rom? Has anyone else tried the 19000 roms on there captivate? Have you had the lagging?
Thanks!
Personally I stay away from the 19000 ROMs because they're obviously created for I9000 phones.
Go with anything Team Phoenix makes and you'll be happy!
Nearly every rom on the forum is based on a i9000 build including team phoenix

Yeah, but don't they edit them for our Captivates?

True , there will be references to options or phone does not possess

Haven't had any major problems running I9000 roms. Little things like the SGS camera app being built for a front-facing camera phone but nothing major. Cappy's are essentially the same anyway just in a different package...
None the less he use I9000 roms that have been modified for Captivate not pure i9000 roms. The biggest difference between I9000 roms and I897 is I897 have the audio chip support (i9000 dont) but I9000 have Hsupa support. Well thats what Ive noticed.
But a 1900 rom would not load and would probably brick our phones without being modded for captivates. so thats as close as captivates can get to an 1900

that statement is not entirely true. You can have an unmodded I9000 ROM running on captivate, but screen orientation will go places, home will act as back button etc But pure I9000 roms cannot brick your phone

Exactly, all you need to add on top of a i9000 rom is a reoriented kernel if you want the buttons and orientation to be proper.
And if you bring Gingerbread into the picture, your talking about new bootloaders.

Hey everyone, first off I understand that flashing a rom built for another device is asking for trouble or a soft-brick, in where odin would come into play however being that these I9000 roms which have been ported to the Captivate have already been modified, how difficult would it be to port a ported rom to the Vibrant. Is this even unheard of? Insight would be very much appreciated... Thanks!

In theory it should not be hard. You would need a re-oriented kernel for the vibrant though. As well as a modem that works with the vibrant. Basically I can take just about any i9000 rom unpack the zip, replace the kernel and modem, repack, flash. The re-oriented kernel fixes issues with the buttons not matching. If rhett are none for the vibrant then I would say no. there are no i9000 ports on vibrant? If there are you can likely steal the kernel from that rom zip drop it into the rom of your choosing.

Well the only recently ported rom out there soft reboots sporadically for an undetermined reason... I scour these Captivate fourms (the wife has a Captivate) and can't help but realize the development here has seen some huge strides in way of porting roms...
I am planning on trying something soon then to see if I can make progress... Just wanted to see if I could pick some brains...
Thanks again!

If you flash an i9000 ROM/Kernel untouched on the Captivate it will boot/work just fine, but the screen is rotated 90 degrees, the home/back button are incorrect, and bluetooth/sound are messed up.
I imagine it would be similar on a Vibrant.
Yeah I am wondering now how I could obtain a reoriented kernel for the Vibrant.. Kernel development for the Vibrant seems to be slow at this point....

You mean you wait until you get a soft brick before resorting to using Odin? Blasphemy!
Lol, you know what I mean!

It looks like the buttons are the same. Maybe the Captivate kernel would work. I'd give it a shot, but you never know what would happen.
Odin is such a nice luxury.

eugene373 already did this with xcaliburinhand's help https://github.com/barakinflorida/Vibrant-open
i9000 and captivate have 90 degree rotation issue, keymapping differences, and bluetooth issues
i9000 and vibrant have same orientation, but GPS and keymapping differences.
9 times out of 10, "porting" an i9000 ROM to another SGS device would just require replacing the zImage with a "reoriented" one as long as they have the same functionality.
Yep, I am working up the courage to try something...
Thanks for the input!

I'm
on the epic and I am wondering 2 things. It seems as if every i9000 rom works as they are both GSM and have identicle hardware. Is this true? Also, what are the current bugs with cm6?

This its the captivate section. We are able to use i9000 roms because of reoriented kernels. I an not sure about your device
I am talking about the captivate...

Flash any rom you want in i9000 forum. Just requires a kernel change and possibly a modem as well depending on what is packaged.
Ive recently flashed the 2.3.3 I9000 gingerbread bootloaders. Am I foolish to assume that I can now flash not only Captivate roms but galaxy s I9000 roms as well?

I9000 roms will require a captivate kernel for proper button mapping and orientation

I've been running Talon kernels since I first got root. Can you recommend a good Captivate kernel that will work with the I9000 roms?

Talon should do, obviously gb version

I tried to flash an I9000 jvr rom and the home button fix didn't work. So I flashed a talon kernel and got a soft brick. Flashed back to stock. Will have to try a diff kernel?

The ROM u r talking about comes with a kernel for captivate. You dont need to flash any fix on top of it. With that said you can flash I9000 roms that have been redone for captivate and which are present in Captivate Android Development and not Galaxy S Android Development

That was my original question. If any I9000 Rom would work now or if it had to be captivate specific.

Btw Watsa,
I just flashed Apex 9.0 JVR yesterday and haven't had a single issue. Very nicely done.

Hi there,
What is the best rom I can use that will make my captivate phone look like a galaxy s2 ?
Is there some kind of port rom or custom rom?
Thanks.

There are all sorts of custom ROMs and many of them are themed at least a little. I would poke around the forums, both in the stickies above in this forum and in the developers's one, look at screen shots (usually in the first post of the thread), and find one that suits your fancy.
Any particular suggestions?
If you want to run an sgs2 rom itself, there's an sgs2 port for the i9000. It's called hawkish. To run it, all you need is to flash a reoriented kernel (talon, dark core, xcal, etc.) and edit the key layout. I made a thread a while back if you're interested.
Hawkish already has its own captivate thread, but it hasn't been updated in forever...

Yeah that's why I'm saying just do my method
Thanks! Any other suggestions for roms that are for captivate itself?
I understand that the samsung captivate is a variant of the i9000. I know examples of phones that has almost the same hardware and can use the same ROM but with the correct kernel: the htc hero and htc magic is almost the same hardware, one rom will work on both but will use different kernel in each other. the huawei u8800-51 and the u8800pro have the same hardware, the diferences are that the pro uses an updated version of the procesor (u8800-51=qualcomm msm7230; u8800pro=qualcomm msm8255) but compatible with the same libraries. Motorola defy can use ROMs made for the defy+.
what's your opinion about this? do you think is possible to install a captivate rom on our galaxy s and viceversa?
Sent from my old but wonderfull GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Not quite so apparently. The reasoning and the mechanism behind it I don't know why, but cross-flashing doesn't seem to work between the SGS and its variants. It doesn't even happen between the S and the S+.
Having said that there ARE a few roms which can be installed on both the S and the Captivate from the same zip (Helly Bean is the best example of this). That relies on Aroma however, so its not quite the same thing.

You can veery simply port it over to the i9000 with a few steps. There should be a thread in the q&a
