My friend had a samsung impression (not an android) with an unlimited data plan. She's looking into getting a captivate off craigslist as her phone went spazz... Will her data plan be compatible or will at&t force her to upgrade to another kind of data plan?
Thanks!

Because thats not a smartphone I am assuming she has the feature phone data plan. So yes she will have to go to either the $15 for 200mb or $25 for 2gb data plans

Depends what type of data plan it is because I have the unlimited data plan that included all options for a smart phone on my wifes line because she was getting one in the very near future and didn't have to make any changes although they will try and get you to drop it, walk into a Best Buy store if you have one near and let them check it out for you- I have used them for my last few upgrades and have had no issues- They ironed out the issue when ATT tried to convince me my unlimited data plan had to go
I have heard from different sources that ATT will force you on the data plan they think you should have
Your friend already has the unlimited data plan so under the grandfather rule she will continue to have it unless she decides to cancel it for another data plan. But once you cancel it you can never get it back.

It needs to be the smartphone data plan to be grandfathered.

I'm just transferring this thread from the Atrix forum for those that would be interested in getting onto (or back onto) AT&T's unlimited data plan rather than the tiered plans they offer.
It requires an IPhone 2G in order to do it and a sim card that has not been previously registered on an IPhone.
It does work, I did it on my own lines with ease.

I have a friend that does that...you send him $$ and your login info..he sends you back a sim with unlimited data
AT&T's policies do allow anyone with an unlimited plan to keep their unlimited data when moving to a different smartphone, so if any rep says otherwise, then tell them to look it up in their reference material, called myCSP......just a little inside info
Can't find a iPhone 2g locally to save my life. Anyone know who offers this service

Just throwing this out there, starting this month they will be throttling data speeds if you go over 2GB on the unlimited data plans. You can go over but it will be sloooow.

Hey, I was just wondering, does it have to be an unactivated sim card that's never been used on a 2g.. or does it just have to be a sim card that hasn't been
used on a 2g phone..
and i have an old 2g phone, it lights up but you can't really go into anything on it.. basically a black screen just lit up.. it's recognized in itunes too..

I had one for three days because I HAD to try Android. Had promise but fell short. I still have people bringing them into the store for service every now and then these days.

since at&t counts data in bytes,
it would make sense that your speed would lower after 20001 bytes, right?

I have no idea but are you still tethering? Like as in are you still tethering hours later? If so, you might want to watch how much you're tethering. If you push it too far, AT&T can find out and put you on a tethering plan.
Right now I'm on Sprint and would like to move over to AT&T but like most of you want unlimited data. If I switch I will get 3 lines (family plan) 2 iphone 4s's for my two sisters and 1 Samsung Skyrocket for me. Anyone know if its possible for us to get unlimited data?
I went to my local corporate store to upgrade to a white Vivid and was told that in order to do so I will have to give up my unlimited data plan and be switched to LTE plan. The kicker is that LTE is not even available here and will not be in the near future. Needless to say I said no thanks and walked away. Has anyone else ran into a similar issue and is there a way around it?

Not factual, or did not ask.
I got my White Vivid off contract so I had to call AT&T to switch my data plan. After about a 15 min. call I was able to keep my unlimited data plan. Some CSR's can't do it so you have to speak to/get permission from their supervisor.
Edit:
Although technically the unlimited data plan isn't unlimited. They give you a 10238976 MB (9,999 GB) limit. I don't know when they start throttling though.

I got unlimited 4G LTE. Unfortunately many att store reps can't do it, they'll have to call 611 also, that's how he did it for me to keep my unlimited, he couldn't do it in the store through their system for some reason.

This makes no sense. Why would they lie???
@slimslim. that's what the store rep told me, that the system is not allowing him to retain my current data plan. I am going to call 611 later tonight and will try to order over the phone.

LOL i was just kidding with you.
I would call AT&T they did the switch for me in the store no problem.
I live in Cabot, AR it is by Little Rock, AR if that helps you out.
I did the iPhone 2g loophole without any issues so I'd try another rep. When I went from the iPhone back to the Vivid my data wouldn't work and I called in and they wouldn't switch it. Went to the store and they did it in a couple minutes.

Part of the email they sent me after:
" This is to confirm the following feature has been changed to: Feature: unlimited data for 4g lte Effective Date: 11/19/2011 Monthly Recurring Charge: $30 Included Data: unlimited
- Your new feature and its benefits are available immediately. - Your monthly recurring charge and included data will be prorated by the number of days remaining in your billing period. - On your next invoice, you will see the prorated monthly recurring charge for the new feature for the current billing period and a full monthly recurring charge for the next billing period. - On your next invoice, you will see a partial credit for your old feature. - You may also see overage charges, if you exceed the prorated amount of included data in either feature."

I purchased an at&t go phone Sim card because our bill was almost 1000 dollars. Is there any way to enable tethering on the wap apn?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Holy cow, how did you manage to clock up such a massive bill?!
Anyway, if you're on a custom ROM without the tethering block, you should just be able to turn it on and go. It should work as long as you have a data connection.
If you're on ATT stock, and the tethering check is still in place, I don't think you're going to have any luck unless you actually add tethering to your line. I know GoPhone supports ATT's standard messaging packages; I don't know if they do the same data packages.

Insurance replacments, about 3 actually. Go phone doesnt support this phone at all in fact its not supposed to have data at all apparenty because lte phones are not allowed to use the go phone service because AT&T sucks. There words. I couldve done straight talk but this is only a temporary solution till i get paid friday and straight talk doesnt support lte does it? OH and i do have the 500 MB smartphone plan for 25 dollars which is a rip off to the max so taht should work in theory right?

In theory, yes. As long as the phone has a working data connection and no tethering check in place, it should let you tether, as inadvisable as tethering is on that plan.

a friend of mine had a G2 from T-mobile rooted and sim unlocked, that he was using with at&t contract without a DATA PLAN
"dumbphone"
I gave him my vivid, wich is rooted and running virtuous ROM. He turned off DATA in phone settings, but a day of use and received a text from AT&T asking him to purchase a data plan.
is there a way to use this phone without a DATA PLAN? he does not need or use data at all, unless on wifi.
will SIM Unlock fix this problem?
just dont put one on...thats just att letting him know if he wants to get the most out of his smartphone/lte then he needs a data plan
if you bought the phone off contract then no data plan is required. AT&T cant force a data plan or cancel his service if it was bought off contract...so just dont worry about it, ignore the message you will be fine-my brother has a vivid without a data plan
seeing as your friend didnt get the phone on contract (you did) he does not need the data plan...only you need the data plan. he is not binded to the smartphone data plan contract

At&t has been known to add a data plan to contracts of people when they use a smart phone that they have the imei number in their database. As long as the phone is branded at&t they will get you.

Well my brother doesn't have a data plan on his vivid...and I don't see how they can force a data plan on you if you are not on a contract...if they put you on one call them and demand to be taken off...you never agreed to anything that would force you into a data plan...if that happened to me I would force att to take it off...

I think it is in their terms of service, not the contract. Perhaps I wasn't persuasive enough, as I have 2 lines off contract, but they picked up the Captivate on the IMEI basis on a former "dumbphone" line and could not remove the data plan. I spoke to both level 1 and level 2 customer support on 3 occasions, and neither would do it, regardless of how calm or aggressive I got with them.
Tl;Dr: They use an IMEI database to pick out their smartphones and auto enroll them in a data plan, and you can't opt out.

Att doesn't have every phone's imei....if its an att branded phone then they will for sure have the imei number in their data base...if it isn't an att phone then theres like a 75% chance the imei isn't in their data base...
That is why people with international phones (like the sgs3) are able to put there international smartphone onto the att unlimited dumbphone plan...
