How to get Unlimited Data on AT&T - LG Thrill 4G

I'm just transferring this thread from the Atrix forum for those that would be interested in getting onto (or back onto) AT&T's unlimited data plan rather than the tiered plans they offer.
It requires an IPhone 2G in order to do it and a sim card that has not been previously registered on an IPhone.
It does work, I did it on my own lines with ease.

I have a friend that does that...you send him $$ and your login info..he sends you back a sim with unlimited data

AT&T's policies do allow anyone with an unlimited plan to keep their unlimited data when moving to a different smartphone, so if any rep says otherwise, then tell them to look it up in their reference material, called myCSP......just a little inside info

Can't find a iPhone 2g locally to save my life. Anyone know who offers this service

Just throwing this out there, starting this month they will be throttling data speeds if you go over 2GB on the unlimited data plans. You can go over but it will be sloooow.

Hey, I was just wondering, does it have to be an unactivated sim card that's never been used on a 2g.. or does it just have to be a sim card that hasn't been
used on a 2g phone..
and i have an old 2g phone, it lights up but you can't really go into anything on it.. basically a black screen just lit up.. it's recognized in itunes too..

since at&t counts data in bytes,
it would make sense that your speed would lower after 20001 bytes, right?

I have no idea but are you still tethering? Like as in are you still tethering hours later? If so, you might want to watch how much you're tethering. If you push it too far, AT&T can find out and put you on a tethering plan.

Right now I'm on Sprint and would like to move over to AT&T but like most of you want unlimited data. If I switch I will get 3 lines (family plan) 2 iphone 4s's for my two sisters and 1 Samsung Skyrocket for me. Anyone know if its possible for us to get unlimited data?

[Q] Captivate question

Hi there,
I'm on AT&T with my parents family plan still, and my mom is eligible for an upgrade. We're both on iPhones at the moment, and I'm not due for an upgrade till 2012, but she is. So I was wondering, I have the unlimited data option on my iPhone, and she said she'd get the Captivate and give to me if I gave her the
3GS.
So my question is, can we just switch SIM cards? Or will there be some sort of hardware/data restriction?
Thanks in advance!
nope you can switch cards wihtout problem, i sold my 3Gs for a captivate and we switched sims without problem
They will automaticly change ur data plan if you dont

That's all I'm really worried about. Since it was clarified above that it would work.

Same here. To the OP make sure you speak to at&t representatives about what you are trying to for so you don't get sucked into a worthless limited plan. I made sure everything was done online and though the phone.
Sent from bad ass Captivate running Axura RC1!
If you get your Captivate from a 3rd party like Radio Shack or Best Buy, they sure will screw up your data package. if you go thru the ATT corporate stores, tho, you can stay on the grandfathered unlimited data plan...and yes you can switch from UNLIMITED IPHONE to UNLIMITED SMARTPHONE.
When i switched from my 3GS to the Captivate, I went to both a Best Buy and a Shack, and they both told me they had to switch me to the new data plans...I went to the Death Star and got it done with no problem.
A month or two later, I even switched my data plan back to the UNLIMITED IPHONE so that when I work on phones in my store, I have a sim that lets me access the network if wifi doesnt work.
My sim goes between my Captivate and my Dell Streak and I have no problems with data...
-----VERY IMPORTANT----
I don't have voice mail on any of my phones because the iPhone data plan is provisioned for Visual Voicemail, and since I'm not using an iPhone, my voicemail box isn't set up. There is probably a work-around, but it's not a big deal for me, so as long as my plan is for the iPhone, and my sim is in something else, you can't leave me a message.

[Q] Data Plan

Not sure if anyone know's but let's say I get two of these phones one for me and one for the wife and Only one needs Data considering I am home all day with wi-fi access. Is there a way to get it so I can call in and drop one of the data plans after getting the phone?
The only way you could do that is if you buy it off contract. The carrier will force you to have a data plan.
Sent from my LG Thrill 3D using XDA Premium
Well what if I buy it and say I sold the phone and plug in My OLD Motorola Rokr to the Sim when I call them. I mean they can't prove that I didn't sell it.
But the network knows your imei and att will know what kind of phone it is.
Would your plan work? Probably. Would it be surprising for att to surprise you with automatically adding a data plan later? No.
If you look online at your account it will show you what phone you have. I once tested their system with a few phones I got from friends. One was an att branded flip phone, one was a unlocked HTC WinMo phone with a custom ROM, and another was a TMo blackberry. Each time within a day or two the website updated itself with my phone.

plenty of other ways, port out number to another carrier.....port it back in, dont have to use same rate plan when you come back, dif phone now, no data needed...
Any time you put your Sim card in a smartphone, the phone will update the IMEI on your account and send you a text saying it added the plan within about two days of use. Pretty much no way around it that I know of.

The price of your phone is subsidized by the contracted data plan. As far as I know they would leave it on your account no matter what actual phone you are using, since they gave you a $550 phone and will be getting their money back one way or another.
Not actually. You can start a contract with a smartphone but later change your IMEI to a regular phone and drop the data altogether. They get their money back from your monthly rate plan.

So why are data plans contracted and required on some (smart) phones and not others?
Data plans aren't contracted. smartphones require data plans because of the large amounts of
data they consume due to the full html browser, app downloading, and app data use.

Interesting. I don't have too much experience with ATT but on TMobile when I got a BB and sold it, I attached a different phone and tried to remove the Data plan and it gave me a disconnection fee. I had to get a sales rep friend work some magic, when ATT says that a phone "requires data and a 2 year contract" I just put 2 and 2 together. Glad to hear I'm not locked into a data plan.
That's crazy that t mobile contracts plans. No wonder they're going out of business lol. with AT&T, pretty much the only thing that is contracted is your service. You can change any rate plan or data plan anytime as long as it's within the guidelines for your device.

Makes sense to me. Data usage of a phone has nothing to do with a required data plan. You can always turn it off (the data) from the phone. Getting money back for a more expensive phone is a much better excuse to require data. I'm still doubting that I can just change to a flip phone and turn off my data plan on ATT. I liked tmobile (and still do) better than ATT. I just wanted a Thrill and I joined my Dads plan so I pay less, but I almost payed the same with my own plan on Tmobile without splitting the bill with anyone. ATT is way more expensive.

5 lines
2 smart phones w/unlimited data
2 non-smart phones w/unlimited data
1 non-smart phone not on any data plan
1500 minutes
unlimited text
Total monthly=~$230
We had 2100 minutes but since AT&T went free mobile to mobile calling and up 10 non-cell lines free to and from calling, we had a ton of rollover minutes.
US Cellular was like $250
Verizon was $160 before you even threw in data plans and insurance
Sprint is terrible in my area for reception
T-mobile was ~$240
Granted I get 15% off my bill so it'd be a bit more expensive. But when price comparing, all the companies are about the same when it comes to family packages.
I have 4 lines
3 smartphones w/ $25 data
1 regular Joe
Insurance on all 4
Unlimited texting for all

Clearing things up
Ok ok ok, so I work for ATT Customer Care, and I have to deal with this every darn day. ATT's systems are smarter than you, sorry, it's true. They do random sweeps and see what IMEI (id for phone) the sim card is attached to. They also look at the calls, and every call has an IMEI attached to it. I promise you, even if you buy the phone outright, or say you have a different phone, it will catch you. It will also notify you saying your busted, and it will put on the $25 2gb with $10/1gb overage on it. You cannot get around it, sorry. The only way was to have a smartphone exclusion on the acct, and that is not possible because you are changing IMEI's. Sorry, deal with it.
On a side now, if you want unlim data, then buy an ORIGINAL iPhone, put it on your acct for a few days, call back in and have the imei changed to the thrill, and you get to keep the data package.
Have a great day!

AT&T: want LTE phone? Give up your unlimited data!

I went to my local corporate store to upgrade to a white Vivid and was told that in order to do so I will have to give up my unlimited data plan and be switched to LTE plan. Not factual, or did not ask.
I got my White Vivid off contract so I had to call AT&T to switch my data plan. After about a 15 min. call I was able to keep my unlimited data plan. Some CSR's can't do it so you have to speak to/get permission from their supervisor.
Edit:
Although technically the unlimited data plan isn't unlimited. They give you a 10238976 MB (9,999 GB) limit. I don't know when they start throttling though.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is an MNVO?
I don't know if they would be violating the TOS. I'm pretty sure the contracts that we all signed gave them the right to change any damn thing they want, whenever they want to.
This move has probably been planne for since 4g was a but a twinkle in their eye.
I'm pretty sure we'll have to wait out our "upgraded" contracts until the original end dates. And they're betting that by then, we'll have gotten used to the "upgrades."
I just love that have the nuts to call this an upgrade. Freaking hilarious.
well from what ive read, it's for customers with a 3G phone going to a 4G phone. I think if you don't upgrade from them you should be able to keep it. Looks like if the Nexus line expands and is sold through the google play store, im buying my phones straight from google

that how i'm reading it too, it doesn't sound like i will be required to change my data plan until i upgrade again.
The way it will likely work is that as 3G unlimited contracts expire, Verizon will push subscribers to upgrade their devices to smartphones on company's 4G LTE network. These customers will then have to sign up for the data share plans.

Probably. But that's the velvet glove. Do we know anything about the iron hand inside? If Verizon's spiel is "Upgrade to 4G LTE" and the customer's response is "No thanks", will Verizon counter with "Upgrade to LTE or else find another provider"?
The mindset I'm sensing behind killing off grandfathered unlimited is that they want all of their customers capped, and if you won't be capped, you won't be their customer. They're playing chicken, and most of their affected customer base will be the first to flinch.

Yeah, looks like they've opened a loophole in their plan. You lose your grandfathered unlimited if you buy a subsidized new phone (i.e., renew contract). So, if you craigslist or ebay a phone, and convince Verizon to activate it, you'll keep the unlimited data. (Or, if you like giving money to Verizon, buy the phone new from them.)
Interesting. I wonder how many upgrading customers who want the new-new shiny and don't pay much attention to contract plan dynamics will miss that distinction and lose their unlimited access without fully realizing it?

Unlimited data no more!!!

This is a heads up so take it as you may.
I just came from T-Mobile and one of the reps told me they had a really big meeting recently and T-Mobile is planning on retiring their unlimited data.
Signs that this might be true:
1: T-Mobile officially getting iPhone 5. We all know this means a flock of isheeps heading to T-Mobile for unlimited data and iPhone
2: LTE network currently rolling out. T-Mobile iPhone 5 will probably support LTE. So who really thinks you'd have unlimited LTE for around $70? Unheard of.
3: T-Mobile merging with metro pcs aiming to pass at&t as number 2 carrier. We all know the bigger a phone company gets, the less ****s they give about their customers.
4: all this new "unCarrier" crap they're dropping all has data of 2gb, 5gb and highest being 12gb.
I'm thinking this is all gonna happen either when the iPhone 5 is sent to T-Mobile or when their LTE network is solid enough across the boards. Let's look at Verizon when they got rid of their unlimited data and how LTE was spread almost instantly. But on the bright side, I believe from an article that I came across, they'll get rid of it and go back to throttling when LTE is out. What that means is when you go past your data allowance on LTE network, you get throttled down to 4g instead of edge/2g/3g.
Once again, this is all stuff I figure is gonna happen from all the recent changes going on. Feel free to comment your opinions and thoughts
Isn't that what they're doing now? Their plans just throttle you after a certain data amount, except the $70 unlimited everything(no throttling) plan.

This won't be true for the foreseeable future since their new marketing campaign is centered around the option of unlimited data. Remember LTE is a more efficient use of spectrum so it can handle a larger load than other network types. They've also probably done their research on what the average consumer uses in data so they priced their unlimited plan based on the law of averages.

Verizon dropped unlimited data plans after it lost the right to block tethering apps in the Android market.
http://lifehacker.com/5933152/the-right-to-tether-what-the-verizonfcc-settlement-means-to-you
T-Mobile already bans tethering on it's unlimited plan, but allows it on metered plans.
They just don't want to end up competing with home broadband providers. Why pay for FIOS, when you can tether LTE?
what? does it make sense to remove unlimited data after releasing new plans this week? thats a marketing and pr nightmare.

T-Mobile unlimited data isn't going anywhere. They just spent a fortune on their network in all aspects. Now GTFO!
I work for tmobile and I can tell you that unlimited data is here to stay

Lol you all have your opinions. I'm pretty sure everyone on Verizon felt the same way thinking LTE meant unlimited data for more people. Just remember, before the "no cap" commercials, T-Mobile has always been unlimited. Its still gonna be unlimited to a point where you pass a certain usage. But hell, let's all wait and see

Oh and just because you work for T-Mobile doesn't mean you know ****. I know a lot of idiots that work at T-Mobile that I have to explain stuff to majority of the time. To some people its just a job

You're no more credible than anyone else here, bud. If anything, you're less credible for posting a RUMOR (From a rep no less. Irony much?) that holds very little water considering how T-Mobile is very proud of being one of the only carriers to offer truly unlimited data. All you have done is create a flame topic for which you should be thrown in that fire. Don't tell people to comment their thoughts and opinions if you can't handle it.
