From what I see here, we are missing one thread for starters, to keep basic informations in one place. Yeah, it's all here (and on MoDaCo forum) but to find everything there is to know... pffft. A lot of searching and zillion tabs opened - there is a thread for everything, but scattered around. So, here is what I did with my Optimus, all in one place (SD card recommended for some steps) guide wanna-be:
1. install alternative launcher (ADW, GO Launcher, LauncherPro... search for reviews, try them out)
2. get root with SuperOneClick
3. install ClockworkMod Recovery because there is no other way to apply patches, updates or flash custom ROM's, and it's easy to make backup and restore too (system only, before some critical flashing I would suggest to create backup of internal memory or you could lose everything, like photos, music etc.)
4. from recovery install Paul's patches (copy zip file to phone/SD, shut down, boot to recovery with *hold power and vol- buttons*, select flash zip, reboot):
Stock Performance Pack
Stock Patch Pack - AOSP style lockscreen
there is also Stock Fix Pack - Camera with brightness fix + silent camcorder but looks like I don't need it
5. freeze and/or uninstall some of LG's apps like in this thread here. Most important ones I guess would be F-secure, LG Home (you have alternative one, right?), Car, and SNS.
Phone works like a charm . There are also custom ROM's that you could flash through ClockworkMod. While I flashed the hell out of my previous phone, I'm still on stock so no advices in that direction but it is really easy. Just be careful with wiping - everything on internal memory could be lost.
Also, tried to theme it using http://uot.dakra.lt/ but that didn't work well - got stuck on LG boot logo and phone was dead, nandroid restore didn't help. I downloaded a custom ROM (what the heck, stock one was destroyed anyway) but even flashing new ROM from recovery didn't help. There are few threads that go there and this is my humble guide how to fix this but remember - THIS WIPES INTERNAL MEMORY - and I learned it the hard way:
1. download stock ROM (Firmware) from LG Optimus 2x P990 Original ROM's, in my case it was BIN_LGP990AT-00-V10c-EUR-XX-APR-16-2011+0 (Euro open), unzip it
2. download SmartFlash from this thread on MoDaCo forum (just SmartFlash and drivers, baseband is not covered here) and follow instructions. Only difference is that you DON'T flash "fls", it is baseband. Other one, that big, fat .bin file (LGP990AT-00-V10c-EUR-XX-APR-16-2011+0_AP.bin) is the one needed
This is it, after 2-3 minutes Optimus wakes up and works again, completely stock, clean and un-rooted. If you had nandroid backup (from recovery) and it still is on your SD card, after rooting and installing ClockworkMod again you can apply it and OS will be the same as it was. Except for everything that was on internal memory.
Of course, I take no responsibility if anything of this breaks your phone
If you have some advices, please write.
Also, if someone could tell me how to get wifi auto reconnecting after sleep or coming back in range, that would be awesome.
Ok, wifi sorted!
My baseband was rather old, version 405. So I flashed baseband 622 with RIL from here: [Baseband+RIL] 1035.21_20110622 (latest at the moment)
Click on MoDaCo forum link for instructions. Create nandroid backup in recovery first, OS was reverted to original and internal memory wasn't wiped, but did complete backup anyway.
RIL is in zip file, so it's obvious - flash it from recovery after baseband is done.
After nandroid restore had to apply Paul's patches again and that was it
Now wifi reconnects, 3G seems like is waking up faster. Still to early to comment on battery life but for now I'm satisfied
edit: for some reason, maybe the problem was with WiFinder app and not baseband. Strange. Switched to WiFi Manager

(beware, noob here )
So, I've decided to flash CM7 nightly #127 (which seems to be the latest build) to my O2X...
I am completely new to this, so I am going to follow this tutorial: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_Optimus_2X:_Full_Update_Guide
As of now, I've successfully rooted my device using SuperOneClick (so much easier than the method described in CM tutorial), and I made some backups with Titanium Backup.
On the forums here I read you need to also use NVFlash... That it is better that Rom Manager.... But there is no mentions of it in the official CM tutorial... All I found was this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054492 but I'm not sure of what it does, and if it is necessary to use it when flashing CM...
So, what should I do? I already installed ROM Manager and flashed the recovery thingy... All I need is a external sd card (which I going to get today) to make the Nandroid backup, copy the CM zip on it and Flash it...
Is this procedure risky? Do I absolutely need to do it with NVFlash? Is it ok to do this as I already set up Rom Manager?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!
NVflash is not necessary, in fact not even needed. Just need the cm7 zip file which needs to be renamed to 'update.zip' and put it in the root of the sd card. I think it's possible to flash using the internal sd card but I'm not sure. Once you flash that, you should flash the gapps file using 'install zip from sd card' using clockworkmod. Both of these flashing methods using CWM. I didn't use ROM manager, I just booted into CWM recovery and then flashed it. ALWAYS make a full rom backup before flashing and you should be safe and yes it's very safe.
Nv-flash is only needed when you have to restore your phone from some thing close to a absolute brick (when you have flashed some thing wrong or done some thing really bad, and it don't start by any means). That's when nv-flash is used to restore it as an last option. When nothing else works then you use it.
The metod described in the update guide is more advanced and yea its a bit of pain. But at the same time you do gain some practice on things that might be needed to do later in case you have problem with your phones. Things that people here on this forum almost assume that you know how to do. Also it works on all current known firmware for LGO2X. At least follow the steps until you have the adb set up. It might save you the frustration when you sit there and have problem with the phone.
Flashing is easier and faster with the rom manager app. Just remember to move your backups from titanium to the external sd as well. You don't want to lose those backups, right?
Last but not least.
Welcome to the living hell of always flashing the latest firmwares =D
And constant hunt for the highest ver numbers!
PS: Its safe as long as you remember "BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP"
Thanks for the replies
I have now successfully flashed the latest CM nightly build !!! And it rocks !!! I can't believe how sluggish my phone was with the official firmware... It is just crazy...
I had a few issues though:
- When I flashed CM (after data/cache wipe / factory reset), I couldn't find anything on my external SD card... To access the CM zip, I had to navigate to the internal SD card, and there I had a "_ExternalSD" folder... a bit weird...
- I exported all my contacts' numbers on the SIM card before flashing, but CM did not find anything... Hopefully I had a backup on my desktop, and had to manually re create all contacts (good thing I don't have too many...)
- I flashed the latest google App from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#Google_Apps but the Market is the old version (2.x)
Other than that, I am now a happy CM user... No way I go back to official LG bloatwares!!!

You can flash (with CWM recovery same procedure that you used to flash CM7) latest Market from here:http://www.mediafire.com/temasek (Go to Misc Folder)
Temasek is a very active guy and has many goodies to share !

Thanks a lot for the tip
Should I uninstall (somehow) my previous Google apps, or can I just flash the new version on top of the old?
I just saw that a new CyanogenMod nightly build has been released (#146) and I'm eager to update (from #127).
But I am wondering if I need to go through the whole process again (Nandroid backup, clear data/cache, wipe, flash CM, flash google apps)...
Or can I just go to recovery mode (from Rom manager) and flash the latest CM build??
Thanks in advance for your answer!!
NVFlash is used kinda like fastboot for our device (Cyanogen said so in the RC1 forum), a just in case scenario. As if in rom manager gives you an endless bootloop and you can't boot into recovery mode. You can use the NVFlash CWM or rom manager, I actually never use rom manager; I just uninstall it.
As far as the CM Wiki goes, I'm trying to change it to include NVFlash but the wiki people are a bit strict on what gets linked to what...

Hi everyone here, im a happy new O2x user. Im coming from an Optimus One.
I have some questions (maybe stupid questions, sorry about that) and i hope somebody can help me, i have been reading a lot of post around the forum but i didnt understand any clear answer for this, i'll apprecciate any help.
1. Whats the different between install Recovery from ROM Manager and install other way like this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098745 . Which one could be better option?
2. Where the ROM Manager installs the recovery (I mean external or internal storage)
3. Whats the different between mount CWM on internel or external storage?
4. Is necessary an EXT partition in every ROM? The partition is for Internal or External SD? on LG P500 the EXT is for install apps on external MicroSD, so what is the EXT partition for on the LG P990 if it has a lot internal storage itself?
5. G2x is only for T-Mobile? how can i be sure that my phone is 2x and not G2x? (Mine is a P990)
6. Last question, HDMI works on any ROM?
Thanks in advance guys, and sorry for being n00b u.u
pd. Sorry about english.

Hoi,
may I can help you a bit.
1. To install the Rom-Manager you need to root your device first. The install via the manager afterwards is easy and smoothly. I think the CWM in this thread is not yet "officially" released because the ROM manager only shows 5.0.2.0. Doesn't matter at least for me at the moment. 5.0.2.0 works fine!
I recommend you to install it via ROM-manager.
2. It's installed on the internal SD-card.
3. Can't help you with that properly. CWM made everything as it should do for me. May it depends on the way you mounted your system. CM7 for example mounts your external SD as "internal"-SD to use it as system partition.
4. Sorry, dunno.
5. G2x is called P999 so you got a o2x.
6. HDMI on every ROM. Well, no ;-) On most stock based ROM's it works.
-> I recommend you this stock MOD rom [ROM] 20110921- lg o2x gb stock mod by topogigi v1.6 - Bug defeated!
It works quite well and is very fast and stable. V1.7 will be released shortly so you may wait till tomorrow.

I think imma use Rom Manager for recovery but, do i need any specific version? or i can just search for "Rom Manager" on Market, install official clockworkmod app and click on "Flash clockworkmod Recovery"?
About the ROM you suggest me to use, it said i need to flash GB baseband, the file to download for baseband is an extension .fls with 7mb size, that kind of extension is flasheable from CWM? if i wanna back to V10 baseband how can i do?

1- As said, just install ROM Manager from Market once your phone is rooted, then in the app's menu you select 'Flash Clockworkmod Recovery', in the pop up menu you select Optimus 2X and you're done. Suggest also to install O2X Reboot from market to be able to reboot in recovery (or normal mode) without having to play with buttons.
2- Recovery is a special partition, so it's physically installed on internalSD, in the 'system' part of it, you can't change it. The Backups are by defaults written on external SD card.
3- CWM mounts by default externalSD but you can access to internalSD also there is a menu entry for this.
4- Ext partition is not necessary here, and not used, it was a trick to expand 'internal app storage' in older phones. Don't bother with that.
5- You have an O2X.
6- HDMI works totally in leaked 'official' Gingerbread ROMs (and Froyo ROMS evidently) and works partially in CyanogenMod. In Cyanogen you don't have FM Radio and AD2P neither.
I recommand http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254359 (I use it), and CyanogenMod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058254)

You must flash Baseband with Smartflash (see here for howto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008070&highlight=smartflash). It wipes /data so make a backup of your apps with Titanium Backup.
With Topogigi's ROM the preferred Baseband is 0725 (I've got this one) or 0823 as it comes with 0725 RIL (read carefully the Opening Page of the thread all is clearly indicated). With CM7 many people have it working with old 0218 but works well with 0725 or 0823.

Install Rom Manager, and select flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it will install the latest recovery to your phone. It is recommended to have the latest recovery.
.fls cannot be flashed from CWM, u need to flash it through smarflash just download the baseband file and follow these instructions. http://android.modaco.com/topic/335494-12-aug-smartflash-stock-baseband-release-103521-20110725/
Note: Flashing the baseband will wipe the device, so dont forget to do a nandroid backup from the recovery before flashing it, just in-case anything goes wrong.
kk guys, thank you @Striatum_bdr and @hisham027. I think im starting to get this.
I already installed CWM from ROM Manager, really easy process. About all my other questions, everything is fine now, i think im going to full understand this within the days, thank you again for ur help. =)
About smartflash, whats the different beetween all that versions of baseband patch on the "How to" threads? (I mean Baseband 1035.21_20110622, 1035.21_20110614, etc.)
Once I get the V20 baseband, can i back to V10 and how? When i get the V20 via smartflash, my StockROM Nandroid will back the V10?
If smartflash will wipe the device, i must flash the ROM from CWM right after smartflash baseband patch, right?
Thanks in advance.

Those are basebands released earlier, you should use the baseband from the topogigi's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254359
You can restore the nandroid backup even after flashing a new baseband.
Yes, after flashing the baseband you can flash the ROM from CWM.

We usually call BB with the last 4 digits: 0622 for example, which means 22th June (=date of release, simply).
So 0725 is more recent than 0622 and so on.
Latest is 0823.
Smartflash doesn't t flash on /system-/boot-/data-/recovery-/cache filesystem and so if you flash V20 BB your Nandroid will be V20 BB... Baseband and ROM are completely separated.
I think you must consider the geographical zone concerned by Baseband. For example 0725 was an european Froyo update, so it is clearly adapted to european networks and standards.. 0823 was Canadian if I'm correct so perhaps not copatible with Europe, some 06xx were from Asia so didn't work at all on my phone...
OK, ty guys. I think i get it now. I just need to find the baseband working for mexico u.u. How do i know when a baseband is for Froyo or Gingerbread?
But now i have another problem, lawl. I flashed CM but i dont like the fact that External SD becomes Internal, so now im stuck on this ROM ¬¬, i want to try miui cuz' i like the visual style but it doesnt boot, i tried to restore nandroid backup but it stucks at LG logo for loike 30min and doesnt boot o.o, by the way how long can take a nandroid to restore? my nandroid size is like 1gb

You should reflash your Nandroid with a complete wipe and best re-format all the partitions (in mount and storage menu) before. I'm not sure MIUI is in ext4 filesystem like CM problem could come from that. And perhaps use backtoext3 tool (search in forum to have download link).
A Nandroid restore can take perhaps 4-5 minutes max.

Hi!
I have similars questions : I have an LG O2X with 0725 BB and stock froyo. I did a backup with rom manager and Titanium Backup.
I would install Topogigi 1.7 (ext 4)
Questions:
1. This install wipe my Internal sd?
2. This install wipe my external sd?
3. I have to move my rom manager/ titanium backup somewhere else (pc) to avoid data loss?
4. I will lose my photos and/or sms doing this? Rom manager backup doesn't concern also data (pics, sms etc.)?
thanks!

1) No. None of the sdcards are touched.
2) Same as 1)
3) Not really, but it's always a good idea to make a backup of the backup anyway, in case something goes wrong and you must do some type of disaster-recovery.
4) Photos will stay (as they reside on one of your sdcards, depending on settings), SMSs will be lost. Just install "SMS backup and recovery" from the Market and make a backup, and restore them later using the same app. (In theory you can restore SMSs from the Titanium Backup, but this sometimes leads to problems, I advice against restoring system data.) In the same vein you can also install "APN Backup and Recovery", "Call Log backup and recovery" and "Bookmarks backup and recovery." That should have you covered ;-)
Happy flashing.
Hey forum, pretty much a noob (not even 10 posts) I would like to get off my stock AT&T Gingerbread rom (KK4 2.3.5) and I keep looking through the posts for a lil explanation, can't find any. So I'm hesitant to flash roms without properly knowing what is actually going on within. Essentially I would just like to test the water first by rooting so I could get rid of the AT&T crap, and possibly progress to a full-on custom rom. If there are any devs, or passers-by that could assist, I would be more than grateful.
I suppose comparing it to regular PC terms would help best, as i feel I am somewhat savvy with PC's.
Root can be acquired through the [APP]SuperOneClick, or gained through [MOD] FuguRoot: root _any_ stock SGS ROM safely (froyo, GB) or by means of Flashing a Custom Rom (all have Root). See this 【Guide】How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock (inc. Gingerbread ROMs) or U could flash a Developer's Kernel that has the CWM Recovery baked in and the option to install Root through said recovery (Corn Kernel is one that is based on KK4. I recommend v6.03 because it is very stable).
And be sure to read the Stickied Threads View attachment 868387 in the Captivate General, Q & A, and Delelopment Forums. That will prove to be most helpful.
Very cool. Now i suppose I'm being a pansy about this, but you seem pretty knowledgeable; if (rather when) I take the plunge to a new rom, will that wipe the whole card (which is where I'm assuming that the system is mounted), including any apps that I have gotten, and/or erase the SIM card (I hope not)?
Yes it wipes apps, although those aren't stored in /system they're in /data but a full wipe ROM will clear data. Use titanium backup to backup your apps, move contacts to Sim card or backup to your gmail.
It will not touch your Sim card.
When I attempt to root using SOC it locks up at step 7 (shell root), it freezes. Of any assistance, I look at my task panel, it runs 2 instances of adb.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Use the FuguRoot method or just use Odin3 v1.83 to flash the .tar v6.03 of Corn Kernel. The .tar file goes in the PDA slot of the Odin.
Open Odin 1st, Select the PDA tab, Navigate to the .tar kernel (that u sould have downloaded) Connect ur phone to ur pc in Download mode and once Odin recognizes it, select Start. Kernel will get installed and phone will reboot. Afterwards use button combo to get into CWM Recovery (hold volume up and volume down and power button at the same time until u see the att splash screen then release the buttons). U r now in cwm recovery and can install root from there. Look under Reformatting, tweaks and more. There u will find the option to install root.

4-2ndtwin, I would like to verbally thank you, in addition to the "digital" thanks given already, I'm running the Corn Kernel right now, and from what I can see, it's a re-packaged KK4 with CwM to allow installation of root from the Bootloader menu. Now what I'm wondering, is what is the difference between the available kernel's for i897 (Captivate), more specifically those running the 2.3.5 kernel, e.g. corn kernel is re-packaged and does not have VooDoo sound, in PC terms could that be equated to a specific driver for the sound processor vice a generic driver included in the kernel?
Secondarily, just prior to appying root, I backed up everything using Nandroid, is that essentially a 1-to-1 image of what's on the rom?
Third(arily) , does Ti Backup save apps in such a state that I can move the .apk's to my pc desktop, install a custom ROM w/wipe, and re-install the apps as if they were there the entire time?
I appreciate any help.
Voodoo sounds is kinda like that, its a module compiled in the kernel that allows the tweaking of audio levels by the user with an app called voodoo control.
A nandroid is a system image yes, but it is not 1 for 1. They do not contain kernels or modems. Just the firmware and user settings and stuff. So, if you were to flash a different ROM, you would have to flash back to what the backup was made on, then restore the nandroid and it'll be like you never flashed anything.
Tibu backs up the apps and their data top a folder in your sdcard called "titanium backup" just move that whole folder back and forth and it'll work fine. Hell you can even put that folder in a different phone and restore those backups
The reason I was inquiring about Voodoo sound is (call me crazy) the volume reference has gone up a few notches since Froyo i.e. the lowest earpiece volume is twice what it was with Froyo. It's too bad there isn't a "Patchable" kernel that one could add that into.
I hate to admit this, but I always get confused at the term SD Card, as i usually think of dynamic storage that can be removed, not a static, soldered-to-mainboard storage that it is. So if I got a ROM that wiped the entire static storage, wouldn't I also lose the backups that Nandroid made?
Sdcard reffers to the /sdcard partition on the internal sdcard.
A ROM does not wipe this partition, that's where they are flAshed from, it can't wipe itself from existence and still continue the flash.

After long suffering on stock rom 2.3.4 (biggest problem was ofc gps which would lock onto satelites almost never) i decided to try custom rom see if that would help.So i rooted the phone, instaled rom manager, made a backup of stock rom on to internal sdcard, downloaded cm7.2 stable and instaled with google aps 2.3 (deleted data and dalvik cache).First boot went well IGO menaged to lock pretty fast onto satelites (indoors) and that was about it...after shuting down phone and starting it again igo couldnt lock onto satelites(yes i did leave gps on when i rebooted phone),gps toolbox would help sometimes...but overall gps was still pretty much useless(even when gps menaged to get a lock it would lose it after a while).Dont get me wrong i like cm7 its pretty fast didnt find any bugs except randomly loosing mobile operator signal strenght.I decided to go back to stock rom because i gained nothing by switching to custom rom(lost tegra, gsm network signal strenght stability, gps still bad). Now the fun part starts I booted the phone into cm recovery deleted cache, data, dalvik and clicked restore which ofc was empty because cm recovery was showing my external sd card(and rom manager backed up my rom onto internal) thankfully i created a second backup by copying entire backup folder to pc so now i menaged to mount usb driver and copy backup from pc to external card so cm recovery could see it.It worked.I got message all is done and rebooted the phone.Got lg logo then black screen then lg logo black screen to infinity...i panicked for few sec then realised i still have cm recovery instaled so i downloaded cm 7.2 on pc transfered to ext sdcard and flashed again.Phone was alive again:victory:
Started folowing instructions on xda how to flash back to stock rom and got stuck on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035041
because ofc Serbia(that where im from) is not on the list.So basicaly after this long post i have two short questions
1. Is it safe to flash with euro open BIN_LGP990AT-00-V20q-EUR-XX-JAN-24-2012-0 rom?
2.Is there anyway i can use the original stock rom backup i made?
Best regards,

check in the developers section for "back to EXT3", flash it and then flash a custom stock based ROM. DONT FORGET TO BACKUP ALL USER DATA....flashing backtoEXT3 will wipe the data. CM 7 and Stock dont use the same file format.never recover system information from CM7 to Stock or vice versa.
Hope it helps.

LG optimus 2x p990 stuck in bootloop
Deal All,
i am new to XDA and having issue with my LG O2x.
I had manged to upgrade LG O2x on ICS and it was running fine, but last Saturday i tried to check update via LG update tool, it says update available, when respective file download completed, O2x started in boot-loop.
I am not able to figure out what went wrong and how to solve it ?
As i was not prepared all so no backup of ROM, no developer mode ON and top of that i am not able to get into recovery mode by precessing volume down + Power button.
i can only enter in software upgrade mode, can anyone help me out ?
Thanks in advance !
Rajesh
ENVIRONMENT:
LG Optimus 2x (O2X) P990 .
Was running Android 2.3.4, and was Rooted nearly 2 years ago, and had CWM (Clockwork Mod).
Now running what ever is contained the the recovery img from the "[TOOL] Full Brick Repair (Clean & Easy)".
UPGRADES:
The AIO (All in one) tool recommend on multiple threads (within the O2X section), bricked my each time I followed the instructions on those articles.
Each time I tried to install one of the Download O2X ROM ZIP's via the CWM bootloader, it starts the install ok then aborts upon error (cant find path /system etc), and bricks the phone. Not sure if this relates to the partition compatibility, but I really have no way of knowing based on the info provided to me.
The only thing which has worked is: "[TOOL] Full Brick Repair (Clean & Easy)".
This appears to have installed Clockwork Mod 6.x, and JB (JellyBean) 4.1.2, (no idea what the partitions format or if it extended - but you can check the tool's batch script cfg fileif you know how to read the syntax).
After installing with the aforementioned unbrick tool, the phone was extremely fast to boot and to operate. But was missing Play and Gmail etc.
In the end I found that I needed to download the gapps zip, and install it off the SD card using Clockwork Mod recovery mode. However, after installation - the phone booted very slowly, and after it booted, the device experienced intermittent lockups for a few seconds at a time, and the keyboard kept crashing (would never show on screen at all), meaning I couldn't even download another via google play.
WHERE TO FROM HERE:
Please help - I need the correct tutorials and Firmware compatible with my device and its existing software/config.
Ideally I would like Jelly Bean version 4.2, with all the extra's.
Most importantly I want a stable build which doesn't have bugs preventing normal use of the phone (e.g. the In-call bug preventing audio, which requires and second step to apply the fix, or battery drain issues).

Please, no acronyms! Proper etiquette is that you put the full words brackets after the acronym, the first time you use it. Then you may use just the acronym on its own, throughout the rest of your post. This make each post self-sustained and useful. Not a breadcrumb of scattered information.
