No More Dropbox for Me - Off-topic

http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
Well, I sure as hell am not using this app anymore on my phone to help push files to it. And I dunno if devs on XDA will want to continue putting their stuff onto here anymore to help ease distribution. I wouldn't.
Thoughts?

Thoughts? Some legally illiterate blogger misunderstands TOS and starts scaremongering to get publicity.
As one of the comments states there are more serious concerns about storing files on a cloud service, especially with groups like anonymous and lolz secz that would hack it just to show it can be done.

Cloud storage systems are often more secure than personal computers. They attempt seurity. Most of the PC's I've seen you just need the IP and your in. I have yet to find a completely secure system. (My security is just several layers of chroots)

Personal experience
Never had stolen or stole any data from cloud storage systems. But have had friends had tons of data right off their computers. Most people don't put ANY effort into security other than a login password.

You're lucky then.
800,000 sidekick users might have reason to dissagree.

Dropbox is free (2gb) and works just about flawlessly.
Let the the lawyers figure this silly nonsense out, I'm not gonna stop using it. Now, if you upload copyrighted material to dropbox, and then post a public link to that material, that's on you.

I've never used it, but this news article will definititly make me think twice before signing up. Not to say i won't, possibly, someday, but i have no need for it right now, and this "scaremongering" as you put it worked. I'll just stick to uploading things to my google account for now.

i am fairly sure that nothing is going to happen when you upload your music. Just don't link it online to share it with the world.

What is?
All it does is allow them to do what YOU want them to do with it, such as when you share drop box folders and their content with others, you're giving DB the right to share your data at your request.

Exactly, if you have files stored in dropbox, no one can use the file unless you copy a link and share it... i mean its not like 4shared where you upload something then can search the site for files like copyrighted material and what not... The only way someone can access your stuff if you share the folder or link with them....

MSE is a great program, if only Microsoft would have done that right before now. They have two good ideas, MSE and the Zune. Maybe version 3.11, I liked the windows.
you can always get malwarebytes (free for personal use) and scan with it in safe mode (full scan is best) and see where that gets you, it gets most stuff.
I had one of these at work today.
Google "Manually remove antivirus.net" and after some googling you will find the registry lines and files you need to remove. YOu wont find it by searching and the website will tell you [random.exe] for the name. It truly is just random letters. Follow the first RegEdit you have to do and you will find the name of it.
Just use Combofix from bleepingcomputer.com Then run a full scan from malwarebytes. I can also confirm that Microsoft security essentials is the best free AV available.

Megaupload

A lot of ROMs/Mods/Files were hosted on Megaupload and none of the links are working now because of the government shut down the site I am LOST without my ROMs and Mods I guess that means that all developers have to upload the files to some other site then?
I lost my files too. I hope it will come back soon
Your powers of deduction have filled me with wonderment and awe.

Megaupload...
Yeah, this really sucks. I don't even get why they closed the place anyway. I mean yes it may have had a lot of "bad" files there, but it's not like it was MegaUpload who put it there...it was the users. Also, they are trying to filter out the copyrighted stuff. So it's not like they're not doing their job. *sigh* I hope it comes back. It was one of the best sites to download from since I got great speeds.
I didn't even think of the impact that taking down megaupload would have on Android ROMs... Hopefully most of you have backups :S
Damn in Megaupload allways the developers upload roms and another things...
this is bullcrap this is another way the government is trying to dictate us and control what the internet does
At least on my device, devs are used to upload on MultiUpload, from what I see.

Limewire was taken down in much of the same way, it was an OBVIOUS hotbed for piracy, i don't think they government should of had the ability to remove it but when they got rid of limewire, you had to know this would be coming at some point. There were legitimate uses for Megaupload but a lot/most of it consisted of people sharing pirated data
Yeah but Limewire was just for piracy and Megaupload wasnt, they had a lot of stuff on there that wasnt. They should have the power to do this, I think this is their response to the other day where a lot of website shut down, including this one, to try ot get the bill from passing. I think its all bull, WE are the people not them, WE are the majority and the majority rules.
My guess for the both of these sites fell under the SOPA rules that are trying to implemented before anything was signed into law. You can still go to megaupload and it will state the reasons that they were shut down. One of them being piracy act. Remember for those in the USA to vote this current administration out of office before all of our rights are taken away
SOPA=NWIH (no way in he!!)
This just another example of a tyrannical government shoving their noses just a little deeper where it doesn't belong. The internet is the only thing that still works in this country, and they just want to control it. I say vote em out, all of them. !Ron Paul 2012!
Devs have to upload them in other file upload sites.
the best idia to write to megauload to tell user acess to download personal file
and then move to anader upload
it posible connecting with proxcy usa ?
never mind

Who Owns Your Files?
Before you get all excited about Google Drive, you might want to read this post:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57...ur-files-on-google-drive/?tag=mncol;morePosts
This is from the post, quoting Google's terms of service:
"Your Content in our Services: When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide licence to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes that we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.
"The rights that you grant in this licence are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This licence continues even if you stop using our Services (for example, for a business listing that you have added to Google Maps)."
Updated at 8 p.m. to clarify that the first sentence of the Google terms states: "You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours." For more on this topic, See Rafe Needlemen's FAQ.

To be brutally honest with you dude;-
You are at WORK. They are paying you to work, not to fu*k around with your phone. I used to have a colleague who played around with his phone at work while the rest of us actually did his job - he didn't last for long.
Keep your work at work and play with your toys in your own time, rather than trying to get one over on your employer

Did you even bother to actually read to OP and the thread, or did you just read a couple of words and decided to post this pointless answer?
If the OP's company blocks hosting sites, TOR installers etc then I don't think simply trying to use https will acheive anything - do you?
ever try underget.com? I worked for me for a few weeks, until one day I tried it, and was blocked.
I was in a similar situation. I feel if my job is done, I should be able to relax *a little*.
I know employers will never agree, and that we should be helping others who cant finish their jobs, or go clean the office, etc..
You can always upgrade your mobile data plan, and download from your phone/device. Is there a free (unblocked)wifi in the area you could utilize?
happy hacking... I can relate. I used to have a virtual machine running ubuntu, building kernels in my free time.
If you change your OP to: how to get to blocked sites so I can develop Sooper Awesome Kernel and Rom for Device XYZ, I some people would have been more inclined to help...
part of me says, yeah i should be "working", the other half says do what I feel, and I end up usually browsing the web.. and laughing my butt off to the off topic images thread... lol

That only works if the web filter is crap and the website is also running on port 443 which most don't.
OP now I'm with you, I used to work 12 hour shifts in IT at night and weekends, we used the office modem to play online games etc, and also watch DVDs.
You could talk nicely to your IT guys and see if they can make an exception for you.
Use your phone as a USB modem and download via that. If your company has blocked access to certain sites then you're risking getting sacked if you find a way to access them. Respect your company's wishes and stop trying to stumble your way around their security.

A serious discussion about piracy

I know asking for pirate apps or piratewebsites is not allowed but i just want to be really sure of what's legal, i used to live in Latinamerica where we do pretty much what we want in internet and i just moved to Germany and thinks work different here, in the apartment i moved to they told me i can't download pretty much anything because is it illegal, but what exactly is illegal? how do internet providers find out what i'm doing on internet?
1: So if i share folders with music i bought in google play on dropbox so i can listen to it on my phone is that legal? what if i share those same folders in dropbox with my friends?
2. What about torrents? are they completely ilegal?
3. if a friend uploads a video from a concert to mediashare, rapidshare is legal that i visit those sites and download files on them?
4. Here they have a RIDICULOUS copyright in youtube and pretty much ANY video is not available on youtube/vevo so i have to use a proxy to watch videos, is that legal?
Any recomendations? Thanks for your help
It's fairly simple.
Obtaining copyrighted material without paying for it is illegal, in all forms.
Sharing copyrighted material is illegal. Letting someone listen to a song on your phone is fine, sending the song tt him/her is illegal.
Linking or pointing to locations where to obtain copyrighted material without paying for it is illegal.
Using a program or app without a correct license is illegal.

Only if they contain copyrighted material you would otherwise have to pay for. You can use torrent to share your personal Christmas photo's all you want, for instance. Downloading AND seeding is illegal for copyrighted materials. (This also includes recordings of copyrighted materials, such as Camversions of films.)

Yes, that's legal, unless there was a specific "Do not film" order at the concert., but that's not part of the piracy laws.

Thank you, you were really helpful but i still have a couple of doubts, for example last weekend i went to a crystal castles concert and i recorded some songs and i want to make a torrent to share it with my friends but the landlord told me i cannot USE torrents at all because otherwise the police or something will give him a fein for like 600 euros? was he just trying to scare me? i guess the internet provider can see that im sharing a file, but would they know if im sharing it via torrent? and if they know im using torrents how can they know for sure that what i'm sharing is legal to share or copyrighted material.
I guess downloading tv shows episodes is ilegal too, but maybe not because i watch tv rips and not the blu-ray or dvd versions? my german is so poor right now i cannot understand the shows on tv, all are dubbed in German

Your landlord's issue is that he thinks all torrents are copyrighted content. A common mistake.
But to keep the peace, it'd probably be best not to argue with him. I suggest you use www.Wetransfer.com for the concert files, it's an email-based file transfer with 2gb free transfer. If it's your own recording, you can also put it on dropbox.
Yes, as i said, recordings of copyrighted content is illegal, too. This also includes recordings of tv shows of any form.
I know what you mean. I live about 5 minutes from the german border so I get all the channels, they're all synched into German >.< It's ridiculous.
1. Your landlord is an idiot or he is lying. Using torrents is not illegal. there are plenty of data/shows/programs shared all day long legally on bittorrent.
2. Most likely (99%) your landlord cannot tell you are using torrents. I assume you are using some communal internet service at your apartments.
3. Just because something is copyrighted does not mean it is illegal to share it. It most likely is, but a lot of artists have no problem allowing their works to be shared.
4. Yes, your ISP can tell you are using torrent. Some monitor. They won't say anything unless someone complains to them.
The second this turns into any kind of "how to", or comes even close to "well I should be able to download anything I want" then I'll close it.
Just a heads-up
I'd download a car if I could.

Okay. If it is your Internet account then the landlord has nothing to do with it. Screw him. Why did you even ask him?
The isp basically keeps logs. At minimum they just log what ip you are assigned. Some log where you go to. They are not going to turn you in or call you. If a copyright holder complains to them wanting your information based on your ip they may give it up. They may fight it.
Without someone complaining to them, the isp is not going to turn you in or contact you. They will sometimes contact you if you use too much data depending on your data and tell you to knock it off
