Anyone know a way around this? - Off-topic

Hey guys,
does anyone know a way to create proxy servers and how to unblock websites?

Try a VPN,might work

Fairly basic maths really. 'How to unblock...' is a subset of what Google can do, therefore Google does indeed equal more than just that

Just don't bother.
That you have come to XDA to ask suggests you don't have the skills to hack the work web filter, it may be an ASA with a CSC module or similar.
Pull your socks up and get back to doing your job

To be brutally honest with you dude;-
You are at WORK. They are paying you to work, not to fu*k around with your phone. I used to have a colleague who played around with his phone at work while the rest of us actually did his job - he didn't last for long.
Keep your work at work and play with your toys in your own time, rather than trying to get one over on your employer

Don't make me call your boss.....

Did you even bother to actually read to OP and the thread, or did you just read a couple of words and decided to post this pointless answer?
If the OP's company blocks hosting sites, TOR installers etc then I don't think simply trying to use https will acheive anything - do you?

ever try underget.com? I worked for me for a few weeks, until one day I tried it, and was blocked.
I was in a similar situation. I feel if my job is done, I should be able to relax *a little*.
I know employers will never agree, and that we should be helping others who cant finish their jobs, or go clean the office, etc..
You can always upgrade your mobile data plan, and download from your phone/device. Is there a free (unblocked)wifi in the area you could utilize?
happy hacking... I can relate. I used to have a virtual machine running ubuntu, building kernels in my free time.
If you change your OP to: how to get to blocked sites so I can develop Sooper Awesome Kernel and Rom for Device XYZ, I some people would have been more inclined to help...
part of me says, yeah i should be "working", the other half says do what I feel, and I end up usually browsing the web.. and laughing my butt off to the off topic images thread... lol

That only works if the web filter is crap and the website is also running on port 443 which most don't.
OP now I'm with you, I used to work 12 hour shifts in IT at night and weekends, we used the office modem to play online games etc, and also watch DVDs.
You could talk nicely to your IT guys and see if they can make an exception for you.

Use your phone as a USB modem and download via that. If your company has blocked access to certain sites then you're risking getting sacked if you find a way to access them. Respect your company's wishes and stop trying to stumble your way around their security.

Well, I've been watching all my Lakers home games and some ufc fights on atdhe for a long time - no problems. It does look abit sketchy I have to admit, but I took a leap of faith and it's worked out for me for a few months so I can't complain! Quality isn't great but it's a pretty popular website to get access to certain sporting events.

A little bit off topic but why does homeland security shutdown websites for copyright infringement? You would think they would leave that type of work to the fbi or something while they worry about more seriois things like actual homeland security..

PC admin app

I haven't found anything yet to satisfy this requirement so I'm asking for re-inforcement here. My requirements are:
1) Install a client on my kids PC that will be password protected so that it can't be uninstalled and which will allow the following:
2) Allow administration tool both on PC and Android device to remotely view the state of the PC (ON/OFF) and what it currently does (specific website visited, application being used, etc.) as well as to remotely shutdown and view screenshot.
3) I want this to be accessible not only from LAN (like netsupport) but also from Internet via 3G.
So far, I haven't found anything to satisfy this requirement. If anyone knows of any tool to do this well, it's more that welcome to recommend.
Why not just setup a keylogger and have the logs sent directly to your phone's email, granted it won't give you the access you want but everything will be visible.

I don'r need that kind of control. I only need to know if the PC is ON and be able to swtch it OFF remotely when I want and just know what my son is doing at that time. i.e. playing games, watching youtube videos, etc.
I have used similar tools but none of them can provide all the requirements in one tool.
I have used OpenDNS and Norton Family online to control his hours and allowed sites to visit but I can't do the rest. I believe there must be an application like that because what I ask is simple and there are more complex tools available already.
So TeamViewer is what you need.
alternatively you could stop playing stalin to your kids

How old are you? do you have kids? I bet not otherwise you wouldn't think like that. When you do have kids you'll want to control the time they spent on the computer as well as the sites they visit and it's not a metter of playing Stalin or the diictator. It's a matter of manipulating their habbits and discipline.
However, that's another story and everyone can have their opinion so let's not discuss this here because it will be a non-ending story of social nature and other people here are not interested.

Well I am a systems engineer as well and I was also thinking the gateway thing, but then I decided that I don't want an extra device in my home for this. Anyway, I solved the parental (inapropriate content) issue with OpenDNS and Norton family (Try them, they are free) and I was also considering Child Control which I evaluated in the past and it's quite cheap to buy. Now my only issue is that my son abuses the time policy and finds ways to bypass Norton Family rules.
Anyway, I guess the truth is your second point. "not yet developed software."
Thanks anyway.
I'll live with some scripts I wrote then which I'll have to make better.

No More Dropbox for Me

http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
Well, I sure as hell am not using this app anymore on my phone to help push files to it. And I dunno if devs on XDA will want to continue putting their stuff onto here anymore to help ease distribution. I wouldn't.
Thoughts?
Thoughts? Some legally illiterate blogger misunderstands TOS and starts scaremongering to get publicity.
As one of the comments states there are more serious concerns about storing files on a cloud service, especially with groups like anonymous and lolz secz that would hack it just to show it can be done.
Cloud storage systems are often more secure than personal computers. They attempt seurity. Most of the PC's I've seen you just need the IP and your in. I have yet to find a completely secure system. (My security is just several layers of chroots)

Let the the lawyers figure this silly nonsense out, I'm not gonna stop using it. Now, if you upload copyrighted material to dropbox, and then post a public link to that material, that's on you.
I've never used it, but this news article will definititly make me think twice before signing up. Not to say i won't, possibly, someday, but i have no need for it right now, and this "scaremongering" as you put it worked. I'll just stick to uploading things to my google account for now.

All it does is allow them to do what YOU want them to do with it, such as when you share drop box folders and their content with others, you're giving DB the right to share your data at your request.

Exactly, if you have files stored in dropbox, no one can use the file unless you copy a link and share it... i mean its not like 4shared where you upload something then can search the site for files like copyrighted material and what not... The only way someone can access your stuff if you share the folder or link with them....

First tip is to set your home/work locations using Latitude.
Next you can ask about when your favourite team/s are playing next, or what the score for their match was etc, that will hopefully teach it the team/s that you support.
Set up calendar items/appointments and it will notify you about them.
If you use Chrome on your desktop and stay logged in to Google, Now will learn from whatever you search. I searched for an address on my laptop the other day and within seconds got an alert on the phone telling me long it would take to get there.

I have tried to go to navigate, then select my preferred route, but Google Now still uses the other one by default.

The first time it showed me the time to work, it was using toll roads. When I headed to work going the other way, I kept Now open and refreshed it a couple of times during the journey. Now it always shows me that route.
What I think would be good is if you could program a primary and secondary route. Tonight, for example, it was telling me 53 mins to get home because I drive past a football stadium where Monday night footy is on tonight. It would be nice if it said "this way is busy, take the other way instead".

Apparently this is because the season isn't on there. This has some truth in it because I searched for Arizona Cardinals and got nothing in Now but then I searched for Red Sox and now apparently they are my team Though I've tried it with Aussie teams and it doesn't work either, even though we are approaching the pointy end of the season. My guess is that it only understands US sports at the moment. Hopefully that will change soon.
You need to ensure that web history is turned on in your google account (not on by default) for searches to show on your phone.

anyway I posted it here so..
In my experience as a software developer I usually start with what would be useful to me that isn't exactly available yet. This way I would be motivated to do it. More like putting a user's hat, think of what you need and then putting your dev hat to create it. It's difficult for others to decide for you.

For my first "real" app, beyond book tutorials, I made a database to store my internship hours and activities. At first it was simple and I had to type in all the fields. Then I expanded it to allow for drop down lists, radio and check box selection and date picker type things. After that I learned how to export my database into both a comma delimited CSV and Excel format. After that I went a step further to allow that information to be uploaded to Dropbox as well as backup the database to Dropbox and the SD card. Lastly, I learned how to let me send the spreadsheets to apps like e-mail and Printershare so I could print straight from the device. Its ugly as hell, but I might clean it up, make it look pretty, and sell it on the Play store if I get time. Currently people in my field have two choices...pen and paper, or a reasonably priced but ultimately pain in the arse online website that charges like $60 a year and we need to track this info for 3-4 years.
So, in other words...as someone else noted...figure out something you need or could use and work on it. If you can do like I did and find something useful for your field, all the better because you could make some money off of it.
One app I would like to see is a decent invoice program that would allow me to store my invoices, backup my database, print invoices to wireless or cloud printers (even using 3rd party stuff like my app does) and have it not cost stupid amounts of money like most of the decent invoicing apps on the market now. I could probably figure it out, but the above app took me over a year of casual programming to figure out...but I work in the medical field...not a developer.

Just ignore things like that. There are a lot of rude people on the internet and they love visiting forums.
Personally I used Eclipse. Most development books focus their tutorials on this and its free!

So if I say "Wow, you must really be dumb, huh?" Which is also sarcastic, that's OK? It's not rude? I'm just checking because you are, obviously, saying that all things sarcastic are not rude...making you some kind of expert, right? Wait, that's not rude either because its sarcastic! I'm going to love this, because now I can put down or talk down to anyone, as long as I do it sarcastically, and not be considered rude, condescending, or an ass! Awesome!
Listen, rude by any other name is still rude and by the OP's response it is easy to see he was offended. I would be as well. Perhaps you are comfortable being told to use Google every time you ask a question, but some people prefer talking about things. Maybe hearing about stuff directly from those who have experience with it, etc. Oh, and please, before you respond, don't even go down the road of how the OP could have asked this or said something that way or another. That's just semantic bullsh¡t and I have no desire to hear it.

Please guys, back to the topic.
ExploreMN, you seems to be an expert with this stuff,
Do I need to be very advanced with Java to develop a simple app?
Or it's ok if I'm a begginer?
Sorry if I'm bothering

Nah, not a bother. I don't think you need to be am expert. Hell, I learned what I did while in graduate school (nothing computer related), while working full time and raising a newborn baby. I started with two books...Android Programming for Dummies and Android Development is 24 Hours. Those two books alone gave me the basics I needed to do everything and I would guess if you really sat down and worked it, you could chew through them in a few weeks. I was doing about a chapter every 1-2 weeks and had to reread a lot because I would forget things between reading and practice. At your age it probably wouldn't be the same experience. At 42 I've already started the natural cognitive decline that makes learning new and not familiar material more difficult on top of being incredibly busy. LOL
