Hi guys I have done some searching but havent been able to find anything so I apologize if this is out there already. I also apologize if this is in the wrong area.
I got a different phone and I want to use my Hero for music, videos etc. I am looking for a ROM that would allow me to disable the baseband radio so I can conserve battery life as I no longer need to make calls. Any suggestions?
Thanks
The best you'll get is either using TB to freeze the phone app, or put in airplane mode.
BANG! from my shooter...
If you download any Cm6,Cm7 or aosp rom could do this. Open up the phone dialer and dial
*#*#4636#*#*
A menu will open up. From that menu choose phone settings. Then scroll down to the bottom of the menu and you will see "Turn off radio".
Hope this helps.

I did this and it worked fine. My question is, I am going to Europe tomorrow and I only want to use my phone for wifi. Its on Sprint so i don't think I will get service in London anyways. Will this do the trick for me?
actually thatll work on alll roms

Yup it should work fine for you. Even if you have the radio off wifi will still work. And have a good trip. Always wanted to go to london heard it a beautiful place.

You can enable airplane mode and use wifi as well.

I am in London. It's raining like hell and humid, don't be too envious. I have the radio turned off on the phone and only wifi enabled. My Sprint phone number has been integrated and is now my Google Voice number, so all my texts/voicemails go to GV app. My question is, if I send and receive texts via wifi on GV app, will sprint still charge me for international text messages? The radio and mobile data are definitely off. Thanks.
I have a very stripped down ROM that I might get around to posting tomorrow. Might put the phone apk back in, but have radio off by default.
If you have the radiooptions binary, you can disable the radio using it. It should be in /system/bin/radiooptions

I don't think so being your on wifi and all things connected to sprint are shut down. But if you want to be safe just read upon Google voice and pricing for text and call's internationally. Also give sprint a call to be on the safe side. I can't answer that for a100% but I'm like 99.9% sure if the radio is off you should be good. By the way if you don't mind if you see anything worth a snap shot take a few. And if you also don't mind sharing them in a pm that would be pretty smooth. I wouldn't mind having a few pics of london. Thanks and I hope you enjoy the trip.

Can receive and send texts for free using GV!
16:35:54 : Daisy Y: At this time Google Voice text messaging doesn't support sending and receiving text messages from international numbers, with the exception of Canadian numbers. You can only send and receive text messages to phone numbers in the U.S and Canada.
16:38:00 : nayeem01: ok
16:38:05 : nayeem01: i have a further question
16:38:13 : Daisy Y: Sure.
16:38:56 : nayeem01: i know i can only send texts to US and Canada phone numbers. but I am in Europe at the current time. my phone is off. but i am using google voice on my computer to send text messages. is there a charge for that?
16:39:14 : nayeem01: my google voice number and sprint number are merged.
16:41:04 : Daisy Y: Yes, you will be charged for text @ $0.20 for the text.
16:41:38 : nayeem01: Why is that I am not even using my sprint phone? I am texting from my computer.
16:43:14 : Daisy Y: Let me confirm again.
16:43:19 : Daisy Y: Please give me a moment.
16:45:33 : nayeem01: Ok. My phone is OFF and does not even get service in London so its physically impossible for me to send/receive messages here. But, I can use the Google Voice site to send/receive messages to my normal Sprint number because they are merged. Just want to confirm there's no charge when I am texting from Google's Voice website even though its my Sprint Phone number.
16:46:59 : Daisy Y: Nayeem, you are correct. You will not be charge for the send text via Internet through your computer.
16:47:40 : nayeem01: even though it is using my sprint phone number?
16:47:49 : Daisy Y: Yes.
16:48:16 : nayeem01: Ok. Can you please notate this on my account so if I have any charges next month, I can tell them to read the notes.
16:48:39 : Daisy Y: Yes, I have put the note on your account.

If you have.a Sense Rom? I believe you can press *#*#4636#*#* through your phones Dialer. From there you'll be brought to a Menu where you could choose Phone Info
and Try to Turn Off the phones Radio! Try that....
Good Luck!
now, what about going as far as actually removing phone functionality from the rom altogether? what apks and files need to be removed?
Anyone made a ROM without radio?
Getting my new phone tomorrow, and want to make my phone completetly without radio, to use as a mediaplayer for use in my car.

There is no ROM without radio. Radio is not a part of the ROM, but a part of the software below that level. I could make a completely stripped down ROM that only has what you want in it if you want. You just have to disable your radio yourself.

Yes, if you disable radio all calls and data (not wifi) won't work as it's not connected to any cell towers.
Awsome thanks i let my grand daughter play with it and dont want any suprises.

Hi all. I have been tinkering with the tilt for a few weeks now and so far have found my answers on this forum pretty easily. I am running the ATT Tilt rom. I am on a data only plan, thru which I use slype. I have no voice plan. This leads to to want to disable the dialer, block the voice network access, or whatever I can do to make sure that this phone does not connect via the att voice net @ 45 cents a minute. Cant seem to find this little peice of info anywhere. thanks in advance for the help.
I'm guessing your best bet is just to remap the send button so it won't be able to dial if you press it not purposefully. Check the link below to see how it can be done (as the green "send" button doesn't appear in the "button" utility):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356322&highlight=map+send+button
If you use the HTC homescreen, just remove all your favorite people and you won't risk dialing them out of an unexpected screen touch.
I assume you still want to be able to place a call occasionally otherwise you would not have gotten a Tilt...
Otherwise, I don't know how to only have 3G or Edge Data on without voice/phone function...have you checked the hermes or trinity forum sections?

I think that you can block outgoing calls in phone settings, I am sure I saw that somewhere when I was playing around with my phone settings!
How's about just removing your SIM card? ;-P
then how would he use his data plan?
Thanks for the suggestions. I use skype over the data network for my occasional calls. Works well enough to get me by with no voice plan. I will check the settings to see if I can block calls. I like the favorite people tool, but hate how it dials out if I tap the pic. Can I change the action there?
In the phone options under the advanced Tab there is the option to reject calls and generate an automatic text message; has anybodt got this to work? It simply does nothing for me. Thanks.
Anybody have this issue?
Can somebody confirm that the reject calls text message generate function works on the Diamond......Mine does not and I'm wondering is there a Registry switch. Thanks.
just trying it now, but seems just to send it to the voicemail instead. Maybe we need to turn voicemail divert off first?
would try that, but for some reason, t-mobile doesn't seem to want to let me turn my diverts off!!
Anyone on another network care to try??

How do you turn diverts off??...cant seem to find anywhere in the phone that gives you that option ie options like when busy divert calls, when out of range divert calls etc etc

Voila, Call divert options

Btw your right, i tried to disable the voicemail feature...and it didnt work...if i press the ignore button it diverts to the voicemail...hmmm strange...
i think we need someone not on t-mobile to try it. t-mo UK is a PITA when it comes to changing stuff like voicemail settings.
Don't still have my O2 sim so couldn't try that, and am working from home for a bit today so i'm kinda stuck.
Might ask one of the guys at work to try one of our other diamonds with an orange SIM and see if that does the trick....

Its strange because on my nokia n95 8gb phone i could easily turn my voicemail on and off whenever i chose.
I did notice after i had unticked the voicemail boxes...pressed ok then exited...went back into the phone settings and saw that the boxes were ticked....as i said its strange. Because sometimes i just want the caller to hear a busy tone or the reject tone...
Hopefully someone can try with a different sim and see what happens.
it could just be that T-Mobile don't like the commands coming from the windows mobile devices then. I've only been with t-mobile since i had WM devices - about 4 years now - and i never really bothered using my other devices on the network. I think i have an old Sony Z5 around somewhere, i might charge it up and turn the voicemail off with that and then see if that helps.

Could be.,..i dont know as the Diamond is my first WM device that ive been impressed with enough to keep it.
Might give tmobile a call later and see what they have to say about it. Although i dont think im going to have much luck as when i rung them uip about mms settings they said they dont support Diamond..so couldnt help me out there.
that sounds about right for T-mo customer services.
If you can get past the usual shower of muppets on first level and get through to the guys in advanced connectivity in Doxford or Greenock, they should either be able to help or refer you to someone who can....
If i have to call them now, i refuse to speak to the lower levels and ask straight for advanced connectivity. Last time i got through (back in the days when i had my magician), was cos they'd changed their MMS settings. Finally got through to AC and they had me sorted in under 2 minutes! it's just the call filterers on levels 1 and sometimes 2 that cause the problems usually.

I have flashed the German 1.93 update to my Touch Diamond without problems and the phone is working well -- however, I don´t have the "advanced" tab in the phone option!! (and before anyone asks, no I also don´t have the German "Erweitert" Tab there).
Anyone know what´s going on here?
I´d like to turn off the short vibration the phone makes when a call is established.
Thanks // Tom

The phone doesn't just stop powering on after you cancel your service.
There are some illegal things you could do to bring it to another carrier... you can always use Data on wifi. I have read of some people using it for a simple PDA/Media player when they are done with it.
I for one am 100% happy with sprints customer service and cell service. Updating the phone could have happened quicker, but hey what do you do.
They have yet to do me wrong. Best cell company I have ever worked with and a heck of a good price.
When I left Verizon and told them I was going to Sprint and told them the price, the retentions department didn't even put up a fight because they knew they couldn't touch Sprints price.
EDIT:
You may be able to use Google Voice over Wifi to place calls, but I am not sure. I doubt you would be able to recieve them since the registered phone number would be disconnected.
And my tethering with Spint is 3 times faster than it was with Verizon, and I acutally paid verizon the extra 15 a month for it....huge waste.
you could use skype to make calls over wifi
otherwise you will just have a PDA

That's a no-go Ghost Ryder. I'm currently service-less and Google Voice won't route over Wifi for calls, SMS will however. Now, if you set up the proper SIP accounts, you can use your Google Voice account through those SIPs to make and receive calls via Sipdroid. Google will pull up how-to's.
As for those lesser than legal matters, that's what I'm about to do myself. Ever done it first hand?

Nope, but it doesn't look too complicated from what I have seen.
Depending on who you flash too MMS may recieve but not send, and Data may/not work.
Seems like some poeple are using better cut to route proxy info stuff through opera to achieve data.
I went through the same type of thing when I went from my touch pro to the hero. I still wanted to use my touch pro as a dedicated gps since at the time there werent any decent ones available on android. anyways, I had then went and set up a similar thing for making calls via the wifi using GV, sipgate, and I believe it was fring....I forget. Basically I would go on my phone browser to google voice, initiate the call from the website, then fring would ring on my touch pro and finish connecting the call. lawl, I just set up my brother's fiance's phone to do that since she is going to Germany for the summer this weekend...so she and my bro can talk for free (though she needs wifi which her dorm over there will have)
Ya, I definitely hear ya about Sprint.....it's funny, I get so so service in my house, yet about 2 miles down the road is a sprint store and as soon as I pull out onto the main drag BAAAAAM insta full signal >.<
As annoyed as I am I will not go back to verizon......way to rich for my blood LOL.
Here is a quick how to for the easiest way to accomplish the free calls thing via wifi. It's a little dated but the info is still good me thinks. The only thing is that you'd have to go to google.com/voice on your phone and (thankfully having all contacts synced to google) initiate the call/sms from there. To get it so you can actually dial out from the phone would require ALOT more configuring and can be annoying. So try this first, make sure it works and then if you want to get more jiggy with it, then figure out the whole "SIPSORCERY.com" thingy.
Good luck

Thank You i am going to try and run the sipdroid and google voice idea i kinda wish there was a app too pick up a wi fi signal with increase strenght so i can use my phone everywhere instead of just home and local buisnesses lol. If you have any ideas to pick up further signals or wifi everywhere let me know also if you have and more ideas on the talk for free let me know thank you.
no dice there my friend haha, here is a thought. think of the phone as a cordless phone for home also, just keep in mind that the audio quality isn't going to be 100%. There will be a delay, there will be some compression artifacts, but hey at least its a free alternative to home phone right?
EDIT: being in a strong wifi environment will DEFINITELY help with quality as it has more umph to work with
i noticed when i read the how to guide u posted thaqt airplane mode will disable the cdma radio did it work so i can keep my battery lol?
heh, not certain. like I said, it's dated stuff not sure how to have only wifi on.

Well I'm actually not switching carriers. I was on a family plan, then a divorce hits, and everyone is refusing to pay the delinquent bill - point being, my phone is tied to that account and can't be used on any other account until the bill is paid. So, I'm hoping to sprinkle some voodoo magic on my Hero, then slap it on a new account with the same carrier.
I dont see why you dont convert the phone over to cricket service (if you have it) and just pay 35 dollars for talk and web. I mean minus well right?
I have recently just found out there is great life after death of the celluar providers.i recently been disappointed with my celluar service (sprint) and i now programed sipdroid (SIP Calls to any number) it works great. I now have a question and hope i get many answers and replies.
1. Can a wifi security be bypassed so i can connect anywere there is wifi signal?
2. Can my Device be set up to extend a search and recieve input of the wifi signal?
3.Most Craziest Question. Is there a way (APP) to use a signal from gps or Telphone sattelites to continue using wifi anywhere?
4. Can i switch out the custom sprint Call programming with SIP calling ? Im actually working on a rom with that option but i am having much difficulties.
5.Can is there a way to catch up the delay time im having with sipdroid calls?
Im basically looking for apps to help but if it requires programming i dont mind. I paid full price for my phone and very upset with the celluar company. im not looking for a sim card hack either basically because im running a Sprint HTC HERO CDMA with fresh toast 2.1 <rooted> Please Help If you have the answer to any of my question please number them. Thank You, Ryan C.

Yes and no. You'd need to dev some priority level into your connection, but it'd be hit and miss wrt whatever AP and the network that you'd happen to be using as to whether it would honor your priority request.
Can I please get more help and if possible websites and or apps to things that can be done on the questions please I'm trying to Get the help so I can advance. Thank you
Glad to hear you got the sipdroid thingie working. I did some searching and found the other guide I used to set it up so I don't have to go on GV website to place the outgoing call.

Loddi-dah of course it was from this site hahaha. You'll see what I meant that it requires more but in the end, it works perfectly. One thing to keep in mind is that for the gv app on the phone there is an older unofficial app that isn't supported anymore BUT works just fine for our purpose imo.

That's what it sounds like to me too, one of the reasons I didn't reply to the thread initially. Stealing Encrypted Wifi = not cool. Unsecured wifi = cool, steal away. if the owner wasn't smart enough to encrypt it they deserve what they get.
You probably will have very little luck breaking any wifi signal with software on our phone. Hashing out passwords is labor intensive stuff, espeically if you are just brute forcing it.
WEP is the easiest form of the encrytion to break, and very few people use it. Actually the router that I just got doesn't even support it.
WPA has been broken, but I don't know how it works.
WPA2 - Good luck pal.
If you don't know anything about network security, breaking these encryptions is pretty difficult, especially with only one device available and only from outside the network.
Typically people who do break them will use 2 or 3 devices. 1 to Inject packets - another to try and decrypt the key.
This won't turn out well for you, people don't look kindly on this....netiher does law enforcement.

3. Not sure what you mean by "use all wifi signal" a/b/g our phones have covered, n or n(draft) not so much.

This is a known GV issue across devices, I know people have had this problem on the S3, so no it's not your rom.
Sent from my S3 on Sense 5 (you jelly?)
This is not only an issue with gv, this happens from android to android or from android to iPhone regardless of having or using gv. I tested with other android phones, I phones, and multiple SMS apps, anything after the @ is dropped for some reason
I set up G Voice integration, and now when i get a call and my laptop is logged into Gmail, the call rings on the computer first, and only at the end does it ring on the phone. Is there any way to disable this, and have it just ring on the phone only... Or is this a by-product of having my Sprint number as my G Voice #? I unchecked forward to Google Chat in my G Voice settings on the laptop...
Also, what happens if i do answer via Google Chat on the laptop? Haven't tried that yet lol

If you do answer through Google Chat it will not ring on your phone and it will use your speakers and your mic to answer the call. You will literally answer the call on your laptop.

Interesting, i might have to try that next time. I guess there is no way i could get charged for that?
Also, if i close my Gmail window when i leave the house, it will ring on my phone like normal? I have the box checked to forward calls to my Sprint phone..

Correct. It can be a little startling at times, but for the most part the Google Voice/Sprint integration works pretty well. I believe Cyanogenmod is working on a system-level Google Voice integration for receipt/sending via the stock messaging app, but if you can't wait, there's also a good AOSP-styled app called Messaging + Google Voice on the Play Store. I haven't tried it for a while (there was an annoying duplication bug where you'd receive messages twice in the app-- once over carrier, once over Google Voice, but they told me it'd be fixed soon).
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the integration so far. I'm fine with texting the way it is, i think, because with the integration i already text thru the stock messaging app? And i like receiving texts to that number on my other phones thru the Google Voice app.... I prefer to know where the text came from lol.

The reason this happens is that Google Voice rings all associated devices, but the ones that are on a faster connection ring first. The computer's network connection is loads faster than Sprint's cell connection. Note that Springs 3/4G is not involved in this comparison.

does this mean that calls are still coming in to the phone thru the cellular phone network, and not data? because that would be one concern for me, as i would think that a cellular phone network would be more reliable than a cellular data network. i could be wrong tho.
and how about with regards to texting... are they still coming over the phone network and not data?
thanks for the info guys! you probably know more than is shared on the Google Voice site itself.

Yes. Phone calls still go to the cellular network, but it is a much slower send than what the internet gets. Same goes for texting from your phone.
You're phone acts as usual, but your computer has a faster connection so it'll get those things first.

ah ok, and do you notice that it takes an extra few seconds to send a call from the phone, after enabling integration, or is it my imagination? maybe it has to get routed somehow?
