Hello everyone, I am on darkys 9.5 and I wanna go or flash stock rom of JVP 2.3.4 for the sole reason of being able to use video call for skype coz it doesn't support on darkys 9.5 which is froyo.. My concern is, is it ok to flash directly over darky 9.5 (lagfix off) the stock JVP stock rom? Or do I have to flash other version first like 2.3.3 before JVP? And if I am able to flash it with 2.3.4, how do I root it so that I can restore my apps? Your knowledge would be of help..

You cam backup your apps with Titanium.
Flash like this:
- download XXJVQ with bootloader (you'll find it here on XDA)
- back up contacts, photos, etc.
- disable lagfix
- flash fw with Odin (inclusive PIT-file + Re-partition ticked
(- root with another kernel, enable lagfix) <--- this must not be done

Ah this is the info I dont know yet, about this bootloader thingy.. So if I flash to another version like from froyo to gingerbread, I should flash with bootloader in odin? I downloaded the custom room on samfirmware.com the JVP version, does it include the bootloader on those files? And if I dont flash with bootloader, does it mean I can't update to gingerbread? They say flashing with bootloader is dangerous so I must be careful..
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
If you change the Android-version (from Froyo to Ginger, from Ginger to Eclair,...) you always have tto flash a firmware including bootloaders. If you already have 2.3.3 and you want to uograde to 2.3.4, you already have the Gingerbreadbootloader so you could choose a firmware without bootloader too.

Thanks a lot lunchbox for the info..
That's the thing I need to know.. I know I can find somewhere here in xda the gingerbread bootloader.. Any other precautionary you can advise before I start? So I have to enter four files, the PDA, CSC, MODEM and BOOTLOADER on the odin to make it work?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
No, just enter CSC, PDA and Phone and - if you want to - the PIT-File (if you use a PIT-File don't forget to to tick 'Re-Partition' on the left side in Odin).
You just use the bootloader-field if you only flash the bootloader but nothing else, so just leave it blank for flashing Gingerbread.
And don't forget to press the 'Thanks'-button.
EDIT: here you can find XXJVQ (GB 2.3.4): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901

After reading through forums that talks about bootloader, I finally understand the basics.. Just last few questions before I flash gingerbread.
I downloaded the custom rom in samfirmware which is the JVP and it has this files,
1. CODE_I9000XXJPV_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5 283.5 mb
2. GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5 86.9 mb
3. MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00CL1019177.tar.md5 12.2 mb
4. 512 pit file
My 1st question, does this rom contain bootloader in the PDA? (Does samfirmare.com roms always have bootloader in their roms?)
Obviously, im new in xda, 3 days young so I didn't know how bountiful the roms to download here and my data plan is limited so I will just use this rom JVP to minimize my data consumption..
My 2nd question is, I read in a vibrant forum that they had a bootloader from I9000 that they can use in their vibrant phones which allows backward (they say you can change to froyo, eclair, gingerbread) can I use that bootloader coz I have I feeling that I'm going back to darky 9.5 and I won't have to flash a froyo bootloader if ever. I'm just updating to get a taste of video call of skype..
My 3rd question is, the risk in flashing roms without bootloader in it especially if you are from froyo and upgrade to gingerbread is, rainbow screen and no download mode, right? (that's why I wanna make sure the JVP I downloaded from samfirmware has gingerbread bootloader in it so I won't have these problems). That's why most roms here in xda has no built in bootloader coz its always risky to flash roms with bootloader so maybe the one I downloaded in samfirmware has bootloader?
My last question is, I read some1 got a problem with his gingerbread bootloader coz he flashed another gingerbread bootloader.. Does it mean that every room has a specific bootloader? Like JVP bootloader is different from JVQ bootloader?
I hope you weren't annoyed with these noob questions.. Hehehe just wanna be safe always that's why I need your opinion. Anyway, I'm learning with every answer you gave me..
Thanks lunchbox.. I'll inform you if I successfully flash it this weekend..

This fw should contain the bootloader, yes. But I'm never quite sure. I think that firmwares with three parts contain it and with one part not. So you should wait until somebody confirms this.
But don't believe all the threads in the forum. Usually you will only read from bricked pbones and not from successfully ended flash procedures (nobidy will write "well, I just wanted you to inform that everything went fine". ).
Normally you need for a Ginger-based ROM Only Gingerbread as a base. So it doesn't care if you Have JVP, JVQ or JVH. Thung are different only on CM7 + MIUI, there you need Froyo-bootloader.
And if you follow the guudes step by step you won't brick your phone.
You are welcome.

Assuming the JVP stock rom i downloaded has bootloader in it, do i need to check/tick "phone bootlaoder update" in Odin before starting the flash?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I've successfully updated to JVP and I think the bootloader also and I'm using video call on skype now.. I think gingerbread is a nice rom though its to stock but maybe this can be modified I the future..
Thanks lunchbox for the assistance..

I have tried searching to find out which version of gingerbread I need, I am in the UK, my galaxy s is running...
Froyo baseband version I9000 XXJPY
Build No FROYO.XXJPY
Firmware version 2.2.1
can anyone please advise me, thank you..
JVR is the most recent mate, don't think it's available on kies yet - but there's many a juicy custom rom waiting for you in the development section. If you check out MilkyS, it has all files inc odin required to flash.

I can't update via Keis as I have tried but nothing happens so I was going to flash via ODIN but don't know which one to use...
Which gingerbread one do I use as I'm in the UK, will any Europe one do?
Any will do, but you want the most recent. If you want stock jvr, then search this thread (it won't be far), if you want custom, check development thread. The modem is vaguely area specific, the csc is country specific - you want xeu.
As before, if u fancy custom, MilkyS has odin in the download package and full flashing instructions in zip.

You can read darkstriders sticky for more info on flashing.

thank you for all your help, I have just flashed the jvr one but would like to try a custom one, is the MilkyS one a good one and is the battery life OK as I know some are a bit heavy, anyway thanks again...
It's excellent. Fast, smooth and very good battery. Enjoy.
k so my phone i9000m was recently running a mod version of gingerbread which made it a i9000. I wanted to get the real version which is out for bell. anyway long story short stuck in download mode and need a file to plug into odin and have my phone working running any bell issued firmware.

Sure, if you want a clean customrom i recomend surface by sam. Its a lot of other nice roms, but i like that one
I,m on stock jvr rom for the time, only cfroot to remove som samsung stuff.
And it's really good

Checking it out now!
If you want to go to the stock, go to the thread by ramad mentionned above and flash UGKG3, it's the latest and greatest stock bell firmware, as well as being rooted and deodexed. I'm running it now, works great.

Ok ill take a look at that too. How long have you been running that on your phone? Will I be able to update my phone in the future via kies if I wanted to?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You can update using kies, it's detected and read by the kies client. I've been running it for a few weeks, never a single problem. It has busybox 1.19 installed in the bin folder, but you can just install an older one to sbin or xbin if you really need to. I really recommend it, I had a lot of trouble trying to root the stock 2.2.3 on my own.

Is there any way to check what bootloaders I am running? I did have the GB bootloaders installed when I ran Fusion, Fasty & J3 leak but I have Odin'd back to stock with the no bootloader version & Kies Mini upgraded me to Froyo. Does Kies flash the froyo bootloaders? Is there a way I can check using root explorer?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
If you flash a TB rom and it doesn't work. The only way to check.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
A side from trial and error of kernels and button cimbos you can't. Tho there might be some info in a UART readout. But getting it to even post UART is more then what most of us are willing to do.
leaked from my FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.
If I have an I9000 Gingerbread ROM installed, do I need to flash new bootloaders if I want to flash a Captivate ROM?

No. I've stayed on i9000 GB bootloaders and flashed Captivate ROMs; they work fine.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Normally no, gb bootloaders are compatible with each other, only the stock music player is known to misbehave. Some devs will advise you to use specific bootloaders, but in the end it's ur call. I'd say pick ur poison and stick with it, avoid flashing bootloader as much as u can, as it's THE part in the flashing process where your phone can be hard bricked.
Just flashed a GB stock rom w/ no BL's & it works. Looks like Mini Kies leaves the BLs alone when being upgraded from Eclair.

Are you on Rogers? if so then Kies did update the BL's, if it didnt and you try running a true GB ROM then you wouldnt be able to boot, it would have a bunch of weird colors on your screen when you tried to boot up...
I am on AT&T. Read my first post. I ran custom roms then I went back to stock then upgraded to Froyo thru Mini Kies. My question was to find a way to see what BLs I had after a Kies update. It seems not to touch them on AT&T until GB is official because I just tested another GB rom & it works.

I find here this emmc bug is killing everyone.
I bought this GN just 2 weeks ago.at begining it came with GB installed.i recieved ota update in the same day for ics.so i did it.
After updating i did factory reset the device without knowing that there is a danger to damage the device.
Then i tried to root and installed some other kernels with cwr, which was another mistake.and finally flash it again with stock rom.but this time no wipe!
So the phone is not in clean state.
I read that one way to avoide damaging the device is to flash it with GB rom and then wipe then flash it again with ics one.all by pc odin.
But my problem is i cant find the original GB Rom to do it.
Is it important to flash with original or i can do it with any stock GB rom?
And is there any kernel based on stock kernel which has no mod no tweak and stuff but safe to wipe?i mean with mmc earase disabled.

Here's the link where you can find stock GB (Courtesy of doc Ketan) ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 Find your Stock ROM (based on your region)
Let me clear out some wrong notions spreading before.... you can safely WIPE your phone even on ICS as long as you have installed a safe kernel on to your device. You don't necessarily need to go to STOCK GB and do the wipe from there. It is already safe WIPING your phone on ICS just as long as you have the safe kernel installed on your phone.
Safe kernels to mentioned are SpeedMod, HardCore (that is if your in ICS), AbyssNote (if your still on stock GB)
Again no stock GB rom from my country.funny i went to samfirmware before and nothing there also.but for other region there are many!
Current ROM is N7000XXLRI
Which is the only FW from my region.

If you can't find any stock GB from your region then don't fret , Download a direct rootable ROM closest to your region and flash it from there. Remember, your goal is not to say long in GB right? so after you've downloaded a direct rootable GB ROM.. Download back your stock ICS ROM thru PC Odin, ROOT it thru Doc Ketan's thread still and then do a FACTORY wipe after.
P.S. Don't worry about the triangle mark on your boot up screen. You can safely remove that thru ChainFire's TriangleAway app (when your rooted already)
I'll try this.
After all, what do you suggest as a daily driver rom or kernel on GN which is safe and stable to flashing wiping and stuff?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
I'm using stock LRQ (for now), but I've cooked it and made some big modifications to the ROM itself and now everything's working and my phone ''flies'
For the kernel.. SpeedMod is my truly one option... Stability and battery performance... It never fails on me still.... Any cooked ROMs I'm making or flashing one from our good ROM cookers here on this forum.. This kernel is still my best bet... but hey... this just me okay... if you want other safe kernels out there, feel free to try them out... it's your choice anyway...

Hydracore can be used on all ICS and JB roms (TW, CM and AOKP) another is Speedmod for TW ICS roms, these two are safe and can be used as per your rom. Most of the roms are stable now, it totally depends on you, which one suits your requirements
Edit- letters_to_cleo your invisible status always confuse me, lol.

Hi,i'm a noob and i don't understand this thing about bootloaders. I have successfully flashed to CM9 (9.1.0 captivatemtd), now i feel like updating to [ROM/MOD] 4.1.1~Jellybean~AoCP CP3~The Collective, but it says it needs Gingerbread bootloaders? prior to flashing to cm9 i had the rogers gingerbread update for my captivate. At the moment i have CM9 (9.1.0) with devil kernel, so how do i get a gingerbread bootloader?or do i already have it?
U have the i896 GB Bootloaders now, since u were updated to Rogers GB firmware before. So u should be good to go.

but since i changed the kernel and i flashed the cm9 9.1.0 rom (i followed the how to flash any rom including ics tutorial btw), wouldn't have my bootloaders have changed?
Not unless u specifically flashed the i897 gb bootloaders in that guide.
And not unless u went and flashed a stock firmware that contains bootloaders.
Bootloaders are not contained in kernels...Or Dev Roms. Just in Stock firmware (unless it states no bootloaders).

i had at one point odin superclicked to stock gingerbread with at&t bootloader and then after with this info
"2.3.3 STOCK! from rogers no changes. DO NOT USE .PIT FILE WITH THIS STOCK! if you need to repartition use 2.2 with pit file then upgrade to 2.3.3 with NO PIT FILE!!!
ALSO, IT CONTAINS BOOTLOADERS!! necessary to upgrade to gingerbread!
this is THE FILE keis used.
The rom below will NOT fix an ATT bootscreen issue, rogers did not change their params.lfs partition so it is not in the rogers keis update. To FIX ATT Bootscreen flash THIS FILE in odin PDA box before or after 2.3.3 stock"
it was a one-click odin again, then from this i went to ics... so am i still ok or should i do something else to make sure?
U r good to go. U have the i896 GB Bootloaders. U can proceed.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
could you just explain how i could get other bootloaders and what the point is in changing bootloaders?
To run a Gingerbread firmware u need the GB Bootloaders (as opposed to eclair/froyo boots). And gb bootloaders are backwards compatible...u can run froyo or eclair firmware with them. Also once u have them u don't need to worry about flashing any bootloaders again because of the reasons just stated. And as well Roms such as ICS, JB, CM, etc. may require u to have the gb boots as part of their installation requirements.
If u want the i897 GB Bootloaders, see TRusselo's Guide that is a stickied thread in the q & a forum. He has a link in the OP.
