Need help with this kernel/rom - Fascinate Themes and Apps

Because my post count is low I wasnt able to post this in the correct forum section. I read more than post, didnt know it'd put me in this position but here goes.
At this link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119169
I downloaded the kernel/rom recommened, used orange cwm to install. Everything loaded fine as other kernels and roms ive used in the past however, it will not sync and their is no market. I tried flashing again but with same results.
when i try to sync to my gmail to get my contacts it says unable to connect to server.
Could somebody please help. thank you.

The rightest place for questions is in the QA section.
You might try fixing permissions. I've seen that fix up some 'strange' builds.
Go into mounts and Storage and mount any partition that is not. If it says unmount it's already mounted.
Then backout and go into Advanced and then choose fix permissions.
Than wipe cache/dalvik and flash your ROM again. Reboot the phone fully before flashing anything else.
See if that helps
Update: I'll leave this here, but I've never done this on anything but a Touchwiz ROM

Hrm. *scratches head*
You got me there. Should have posted in QandA.
I did everything you said and now phone won't load. Hard to explain because everything goes by so quickly but here goes...
It goes to the android boot area, next screen is the one that looks like the android package unloading like in CWM when you're flashing.
then it just loops over and over.

Are you installing a MIUI rom or a CM7 rom?

Wipe data, dalvik, and cache. Then flash the rom. Then gapps. Then boot it up. If everything works fine, go to recovery and flash the kernel.

Just kept flashing until it worked lol.

cyanogenmod 4.1.99 support line for installation issues

ok due to the massive number of people clogging the offical thread im starting this thread just to help some of our newer members get working. anyone with a proper working install can help as well. let the issues begin.
i have no data connection at all i have installed 1.6 from htc and then 4.1.99. I even went back and wiped and reinstalled both rebooted and still no connection (3g or 2g).
any ideas
when you signed into google did it work or say cant connect?
Ok here's a question. I was running 4.1.11 which was running fine. I downloaded the recovery image & flashed it thru the recovery console (home + power) and then tried to flash 4.1.99 & now when i try going into the recovery console, I get the Exclamation point with the phone on its side. If i let it power thru it loads up, but like its stock.
I even tried terminal emulation & can't even get the SU command to work.
Any suggestions besides, re-rooting?
This is what I did
Okay, let me start off by saying I have had none of the lag a lot of the people are reporting. So I figured I would post how I installed step by step just incase it helps someone.
Step 1: Download the HTC rom and Cyanogen rom.
Step 2: Reboot into recovery.
Step 3: Flash the HTC update from recovery and let it finish ( it will do the radio as well) the phone will reboot back into recovery by itself.
Step 4: Wipe.
Step 5: Flash the Cyanogen update.
Step 6: Enjoy.
Don't think it would make any diff but just incase, I came from JACxHEROSkiv2.2 and cm 1.4 recovery.
Hope this helps in any way.
yes the same thing happened to me. its very simple too. just fastboot cyanogens recovery.img
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3915123
heres fastboot stuff

then flash newest cyanogens like normal and wipe afterwards.
Whenever I follow the steps, the rom is unusuable. This is both before and after a wipe. Everything slows down and crashes. It won't even boot fully, because the launcher has issues. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Im about to wipe my EXT3 partition
Every time I try updating to 4.1.99 It stays on the g1 screen.

try wiping your ext3 however please note alot is going on first boot. i didnt have any issues with slow but i wiped my ext3 and data(wipe in recovery) slow downs are caused mostly by missing or incompatible issues. thats why wiping is recommended. try wiping ext3 and start from scratch. its worth it.

check your md5s on both and start from scratch.
Here's what I did:
1. Wipe.
2. Delete all your EXT partition stuff.
3. Reboot into recovery.
4. Flashed the HTC update from recovery. I did NOT reboot after this finished.
5. Flashed the Cyanogen update.
6. Rebooted and waited for the post flashing process to finish.
I had one single FC at the beginning but now it's all good.
If you are not clearing out your dalvik cache and all your other EXT stuff AND wiping, then it's only not working because you didn't do those things.
yes both ways work. however if you have issues try letting the radio install. ONLY if you have issues.
here's a question:
Why are some how to's telling you to flash the 2 files and simply fix permissions while others are saying you need to wipe? it seem like some are running fine without the wipe.
Also, did this myself without wiping and getting google fc at reboot. I've been reading these threads for like 2 hours now and i was under the impression the market, etc. would still work but it's backing out of the white screen and not loading it up. Is that my only option is to do a wipe now? And if i wipe, do i need to reflash anything?
Big thanks to cyan and everyone else for so much help! thank guys!
the reason some people have to let the radio flash is due to either a bad flash. corrupted install or some other reason. every new version come with a new radio and it will sometimes delete your recovery. this is because certain older setup are different and not very consistant. however things happen and some stuff gets messed up. every dream is the same and this software is the same. but you are the different part.

Look at it this way...
You moved into a new place and the last tenant was evicted. He left all his crap lying around (mostly trash and dirty laundry.)
Do you sweep the rooms and take out the trash and call it a day? Or do you clean the whole house first? Technically, taking the trash should be enough (laundry included) but you never know what else is hiding in the house (maybe he had a pet tarrantula and it's walking around unbeknown to you. Eventually, you'll run into it and force close yourself in shock.

need help! sorry in advance

so im new to the android world please be gentle. i just got my nexus one today trying to get it rooted so that i can get the modacos desire rom up and running. so far using these instructions
http://theunlockr.com/2010/01/08/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-nexus-one/
ive gotten the phone to reboot with a padlock at the bottom, it will let me run torch so i assumed it was rooted. i put both nandroid folder and the sense ui rom zip files but when i try to put the phone into recovery mode it gives me the android dude and an exlamation mark. sorry if this is a common problem or i missed some simple instructions. thanks for any help.
Sounds like you did step I on that page, but might have missed step II completely and didn't flash the custom recovery rom.
Try here instead for a full tutorial on the exact steps needed to get to the Desire rom:

But you can skip the unlocking of the bootloader, as it seems you got that done.
amazing! thank you
hey ive tried a couple different methods but cant seem to get rid of this com.google.process.gapps message after i enter my google info. ive removed everything from my memory card. wiped a hundred times, flashed several diffent roms. it popped up first on the newest cyogen rom after installing a couple of programs, not sure which one did it. is there a way to manually clear the google info on the phone because it seems to be stored in there. thanks
So I'm assuming you already got recovery... Did you wipe data / cache / dalvik before flashing the ROM? Did you also flash Gapps? Give that a try. That should help.
yeah i wipe all the devlik/ cache along with regular wipe each time before a install. what is gapps?

Yes, you can flash themes over the ROM without wiping, as long as the theme is compatible with the ROM.

[Q] I must be retarded ... need help flashing a custom rom

hey guys Im a new to the whole rooting and flashing custom roms thing. I love my N1 and I figured it was time to start playing with it more then the usual out of the box customizations.
I rooted the phone using the one click root app:
(cant post the link since Im a new user)
and then installed the Rom Manager.
I then installed the ClockworkMod recovery like it says to do.
Then I performed a Backup of the Current Rom using the Rom Manager
then Downloaded CyanogenMod 6.0.0-RC2 along with the Google Apps add on.
once the download completed it says do you want to do a wipe and also asks option to back up current rom. I checked both boxes and the phone boots into recovery mode.
Now this is where Im confused on what to do. At first I wasnt sure it the Rom manager would auto load the new rom, so I let it sit for like 10 min and realized it wasnt doing anything. Then I pressed the power button and volume at this point it gives me 3 options ..
1) reboot
2) Wipe
3) load update.zip
First I did a reboot ... which did nothing but re boot the phone, then I applied the update.zip and it failed and then I went to the Cyanogen Mod wiki page
on there is said to: "Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset. "
so I did that and then tried to install the update.zip ... which failed ... and basically erased my phone like the noob I am
So can someone please help me and tell me what Im doing wrong? also I installed titanium back up this time around to back up my apps.
Sounds like ClockworkMod Recovery did not flash. Try flashing it again in Rom Manager.
Should have been posted in Q&A
Thank you. Ill try that.
Sorry for not posting in Q&A as i didnt know about it ... Im new here so please forgive me.
Might be Clockworkmod ROM Manager...
I had all sort of problems with 2.1.0.5 and can't use any of the backups I created with it (they just hang when I try to restore them).
Everything seems OK with 2.1.0.6 though...

I reflashed Clockworkmod and that fixed it ... it flash the CyanogenMod rom, but once I was on there the radio wouldnt work, to I went back in re flashed the recovery.

CM requires the 4.06.00.12_7 radio. Go to settings - about and look at the baseband version, that is your radio version. Also keep in mind most ROM's will not setup your APN, you will have to do that manually. I thought CM did, but I have not used it in a while. I am addicted to Enomther's ROM.

[Q] Cannot get CM6 to boot

I rooted my Sprint Hero and have been able to successfully flash and operate Fresh 2.3.3 but CANNOT figure out how to get CM6 to boot. I wiped prior to attempting the flash but all that happens is a lockup on the HTC boot screen. I have attempted to flash it twice, and waited about 20 minutes the first time and 45 the second time with no progress, eventually having to pull the battery and reboot in recovery mode. I was only able to wipe the data but when I tried to wipe the delvik cache, it told me I needed to do it via ADB. I tried to partition my SD card but it ended up cutting the available memory in half, and erasing my backup, and I had to use an external card reader to reload Fresh so that I could actually use my phone (which IS fully functional now). Should I be wiping EVERYTHING on the phone (including the battery and rotate info)? What am I missing?
I have heard nothing but great things about CM6 and am very disappointed that I cannot get it to work. Can anyone help?
Sprint HTC Hero
Firmware version: 2.1-update 1
Software version: 2.27.651.6
try wiping your ext partition
I wiped everything that the recovery menu would allow me to prior to the first attempt at flashing and it wouldn't load. I pulled the battery and rebooted to the recovery menu then partitioned the SD card, wiped just prior to the second attempt at re-flashing, re-flashed and it still locked up at the HTC screen.
I like to think I'm pretty computer savvy but I just can't figure this out. Why would Fresh 2.3.3 load without a hitch, but CM6 not?
make sure you recovery is 1.6 or 1.7 to be able to wipe dalvik i had same prob
My recommendation would be flashing the recovery in this thread here.
This the recovery I used while I was using Fresh 2.3.3, and when I upgraded to the CM6 Nigtlies.
I say Flash The Custon Amon_RA 1.7 in Darchdroid thread->NANDROID!!!!->Wipe Data->Dalvik->sd-ext(if using apps2sd)->Flash RC1 or Latest Nightly (your choice)->Flash Optionally Google Apps->Optionally Flash Uncapped Kernel and/or Battery Tweak(I use the uncapped Kernel, and not the battery tweak, and I get 24 hours+ with average use)
Try that out.
Funny, im running into the same problem after flashing the wrong blackmod... wiped, reflashed cm and now it wont go past the htc white boot screen
It did boot before though which is odd
Edit: Wiped, wiped dalvik and ext part, flashed rom and gapps, working just fine now... will flash batt tweak, bm and round clock in a min, hopefully it doesn't break it
jUgGsY,
Thank you for being so thorough in your response, it all makes sense! My only issue now is trying to re-flash the recovery image. I downloaded the RA-Darchstar image but I'm not sure if it's correctly being pushed to the SD card (all I get is a long list of ADB commands, no particular confirmation) and when I try to flash the image, I get a message telling me that it can't find the partition. What does this mean? Is the recovery image really that important to the updated ROM? How come there is no specific recovery image recommended on the CM forum?
EDIT: I found directions from the Unlockr on the youtubes. Gonna give it a try and see how it goes after that...
So it was decadence#7 kernel that was screwing up my boot... removed it and using stock darchstar
Ok... this is getting ridiculous.
*I flashed the RA-Darchstar (1.7) recovery image
*NANDROIDed
*Wiped data, cache, Dalvik and sd-ext
*Flashed RC1
*Flashed the google addon
*Rebooted
Been waiting for the damn thing to boot for almost 30 minutes now, still stuck on the HTC screen. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

Are you flashing RC1 or one of the nightly ones? I had the same issue with RC1. I could not get it to boot past the HTC screen. However, the nightly ones flash just fine. I would suggest flashing a nightly. I now see you said RC1, lol. Try the latest nightly.
It looks like I will have to go with a nightly. Are there any that you recommend? The most recent or one from a few nights back?

The latest one seem to be very good. 8/22 but make sure you download the latest google apps for it also.
For some reason, I couldn't get any variation of CM to load on my phone (CM6 or the Vanilla variant). I went with Darch's LegendROM and it is excellent - much better than stock 2.1 for the Hero! Really fast and has some neat extra features. I noticed, though, that my reception is kind of bad now and I usually have excellent coverage at my house. I already downloaded the most up-to-date Sprint radio (2.42.01.04.27) but was just curious: do I need to wipe and re-flash the image FIRST or can I just flash the radio image over the already installed ROM?
AND: Please excuse my inexperience with all of this, but I'm about to ask two already answered questions: I'm not looking for long-winded answers but if someone could point me to a relevant thread, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
1) I keep getting a "process com.google.android.googleapps has stopped working" error when I try to sync with my gmail account. How do get this to work?
2) I remember reading that there was a known MMS issue with Darch's DroidROM, not any issue with the LegendRom, but I just received a "generic network failure" message when my wife tried to send me picturemail. Is there a workaround for this?
Thank you all for your patience!

[Q] CWM flashing without ODIN

Hi,
I'm researching flashing via CWR, ROM over ROM without flashing to Stock via ODIN. Specifically, I'm at Cog 3.02 with "base" Cognition Kernel/Modem thinking about going to Andromeda...both employ Voodoo/EXT4, so shouldn't need to disable lagfix (I think?)...
I read at this link (apologies for spaces, but I'm new so can't post actual links): h t t p : / / forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900463
a spirited debate starting about page 4 that flashing to ODIN is effectively doubling your chances for a bad flash, and that recovering a bad flash via CWM is far easier (just try re-flash again...and again(?) until fail back to trying ODIN) than recovering a bad ODIN flash.
If that's true, what prep should I do first via CWR?
1. Andromeda says requires wipe, does ROM install do this or do I do it via CWR first (wipe data/factory reset in recovery)? How 'deep' is a wipe...what do I need to save prior to this?
2. Wipe Dalvik Cache and/or wipe cache partition?
3. Save /efs folder?
4. Aside from TiBu backup to PC, am I missing anything else to save? I forgot to save my Android ID on my first flash, so it's my understanding I can only get that back via flash to Stock...I'd prefer to only go to ODIN if I have to.
Another question I had was regarding nandroid. I made a nandroid backup right after flashing to Cog. Do I really even need this? Since I haven't changed kernel/modem, wouldn't I be better off just flashing my initial Cog zip file?
Finally thanks to all who make this site kick_ss. Connexion2005's videos are indispensable for a newbie like me. People actually answer questions here, and the Devs suceed in delivering onto us a wolf in (out of the box) sheep's clothing...something AT&T and Samsung have failed to do.
Cognition 3.02 is my first and only custom ROM and DG, you have literally saved me from making my phone a brick the old fashioned way: throwing it against a wall. Running flawlessly since Jan 17th...at the same time, I am eager to see what else is out there, ***safely*** as possible.
Thanks in advance.
Since they are both ext 4 you should be ok.
The rom wipes, I clear davlik cache before flash and after, but there our no good reason as to why
Efs files, do you use kies? If so you may want to back them up, if not don't worry, I have never backed then up
Odin flash is not needed but my opinion is you should know how to use odin prior to flashing. Why panic to figure it out if something goes wrong,?
NANDROID only needed if youare going back to cog and after you have flushed the rom you want to restore settings
I think I got everything you asked
Thank you.
So really just the Dalvik cache wipe in CWR prior to.
Kies...soooo failed ever getting that working, and don't seem to need it.
Yeah I actually flashed ODIN1 unnecessarily prior to my flash to Cog. I was at stock and somehow thought ADW would mess it up...rook. I have build 1006 so good to know ODIN's there if I need it.
Re: Nandroid, but if I kept the initial zip for my flash to Cog wouldn't I just use that? Or does Nandroid do better job of ensuring good flash back to what I have right now?
Not familiar with flushing...Would I be able to restore Nandroid directly on top of ROM I'm switching off of?
Thanks again.
OP,
You'd double the chance of failure if all else were equal. I don't have statistics, but I have no doubt that failures happen far more often with odin flashes, though.

The ROM install script does the wipe. This simply means all your apps and data will be erased (your pictures and anything on the internal and any external sdcard will not be deleted).
I never wipe the dalvik cache or cache partition before flashing. I only do that if I'm having issues like FCs (sometimes happens after a bad theme install, for example).
You probably should have backed up /efs before flashing anything, but that's not to say a backup now isn't a good idea. You only need to do this once.
If I recall, you do need to flash 2.1 to get the ID back. I'm not 100% sure there isn't another way.
WRT the nadroid backup, you don't really need it. What I do is keep 2 or 3 good CWM flashable ROMs and the CWM update.zip on my sdcard in case of problems. I also keep TiBU backup of my stuff there (which I also occasionally backup to my PC just in case my sdcard gets wiped for some reason).
One thing I would suggest is to be sure you have working button combos in case you ever need download mode (hopefully you never will, but it's always possible). If you don't have that, there is a clockwork flashable fix or you could just flash cognition or perception once and then flash whatever you want over them (you can do both flashes all without ever leaving recovery). That should fix the button combos since DG's ROMs include a good sbl.bin (I'm not a fan of that inclusion, but it is useful in this case). Since you are running Cog, I assume your download mode is already working.
Thanks opcow.
Yeah I made sure I could get into d/l and recovery mode with button combos before I even rooted.
So would you ever use a Nandroid backup if you added a different kernel/modem to a ROM? Or would you just go back to the initial zip and SGS Kernel to flash kernel/modem? I haven't done kernel flash...yet...

If the ROM you were running when you backed up is compatible with the new kernel then I don't see why there would be a problem. I don't do it, myself, but I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I have the paid TiBU and I just use that.
Thanks again...
Yeah I bought full TiBu, so obviously that should work for the apps/data.
Did some more digging tonight and apparently Nandroid backup is ROM only, not Kernel...So seemingly would need to be on same Kernel at least to do proper Nandroid restore.
...that being the case, I guess I don't understand why people stress importance of running a Nandroid prior to and/or post ROM flash...am I missing something?
If you like a rom and set everything up but want to try another doing a nandroid allows you to restore once you flash the rom again.
Also good to run nandroid on new flash, so if you play with themes and something goes wrong you can restore
That makes sense.
Showing me newbie-ness since I haven't played around with themes yet...
...Figured I'd at least get 2nd ROM flash out the shoot before playing with kernels, modems or themes...
This thread is helpful for me. I appreciate your time.
This is along the lines of the question that I was going to post so figured would ask here. I too am considering trying out the new Andromeda. I am currently using Cog 3.04 and want to test out the new Andromeda. The TiBu I have right now is from when i was on stock as I just recently purchased this and Cog was my first flash.. Would i want to continue to use that backup when i flash to andromeda, or would it be better to run a full backup with tibu while cog is on there and then flash to andromeda and use the cog backup??
also,, from above, i could possibly just skip the step with odin and go straight to andromeda? or do I need to run odin and put it back to stock before going over to andromeda?
thanks

Hey Zug,
Just flashed andromeda last night via method outlined above...did not revert to stock at all (no odin). Only issue thus far is market only showing very few installed apps under 'My Apps', but I think this is a common issue. Will research solution tonight (I did have some issues getting back all apps from TiBu, but after I restored missing apps twice and rebooted a few times they all appear to be back). Also my simi clock widget comes and goes, not sure why...might clear dalvik cache to see if that helps.
Regarding TiBu, it saves apps and data. It is not ROM specific...you just back it up, then after you flash new ROM you restore missing apps with data (do NOT restore system data).
EDIT: Resolved the My Apps Market issue (only a few were showing after flash) by going to Settings, Applications, Manage, go to Market, Clear Data, reboot. Search is my friend.

Thanks Madtowndave.. i might give that a try.. so, since my phone is rooted and what not, i can just go to the guide and start at the portion about puting the new rom on the sd card, rebooting it and what not in recovery and select that zip and flash it right ? (well condensed version of course) and it should all be good?? guessing if this fails can always use the odin and wipe it and go back?
since i added a few new apps, guessing then that i should use tibu and go ahead and reback up everything since this rom does the master clear and then reload them right?? and hate to ask.. but how do I do the nandroid? newbie still to android and i know that just backs up the rom, but is it a app to dl from market? was fishing around in phone and didnt quite see it yet. .but figured i would do a nandroid in case i want to go back to cog.. this smart?
thnx again

I think most of your questions are answered by others in this thread...
One thing I noticed last night is that I only got red (voodoo) cwm recovery menu via 3 button or long press power and reboot to recovery...when I rebooted to recovery via ROM Manager, I got the green cwm recovery menu. Not sure if this matters, but in another forum (on Vibrant phone, our sgs cousin), they said to flash ROM via the red voodoo cwm menu (since cog and andromeda both employ voodoo you can leave it enabled).
Nandroid backup you can do either from ROM manager or in cwm recovery...
Also andromeda wipes the system data, not a master clear...your data on 16 gig internal memory should not be affected, but is very good idea to backup everything to pc per the flash custom ROM guide.

Thanks again madtown.. going to give it a try now.. as andromeda just finished DL'ing
Good luck, hope it goes smooth for you as it seemingly has for me...Feel like a bit of a heretic for not flashing to odin first...maybe I'm just lucky.

hmm. ok. .so did the reboot to recovery and installed andromeda.. did it take a tad bit for yours to boot into the phone portion after it got to the andromeda screen?? mine seemed like it was hanging and was about to worry.. but finally booted in.. so figured would see if yours did too? .. gonna test stuff out now and restore tibu
Yeah, did for me too...and yes I was worried. Pretty sure this is very normal on first boot into new ROM in general. Like I said, TiBu was a bit cranky for me and required 2 restores and reboots...
Really enjoying this ROM, btw.

yeh.. im still doing the install from tibu (getting paid version after tomorrow since payday since im hating have to select install for every app ) .. and then will reboot and test .. though one thing ive noticed that is diff from the video is the lock screen.. in his review it was the lock button and he swiped it up.. mine is set to a puzzle piece by default?? any idea??
edit.. k mine was a 1st time go for apps restored with tibu .this is pretty nice.. it does appear to be a lot faster/smoother than cog so far.. though the Keep the lights on app should keep my bottom buttons on all the time right? least thats what i thought i was from the video and mine seem to still fade out.. even though i hit the app and it said it was enabled..
changing unlock is in settings, display...
Dunno about lights, mine just worked. Make sure service started and reboot I guess.

ok.. that was what it was for the lock part.. thnx .. didnt know that was there for those 4 choices.. thought only could do the none, pattern, pw etc..
everything went fine until i decided to load my contacts/sms etc from tibu.. now when i rebooted to add them, i keep getting the message "Sorry, The application Swype (processcom.swype.android.inputmethod) has stopped unexpectedly.. please try again" constantly getting things like that about swype.. any idea what happened or what i need to do?
edit.. sucked it up and re-flashed ;( will just sync contacts and deal with the ones missing for now ;(
