What happens if I unroot while using a Custom ROM? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I want to Unroot my Droid (A855) but keep my stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM by Peter Alfonso.
Would anything happen If I unroot my phone while using a custom ROM AND kernel?
Thanks!

I'm assuming you would still have either SPRecovery or Clockwork recovery still installed.
Make a backup and give it a try. If you don't like it, just reboot into recovery and restore your current ROM (with root). I suspect you won't notice much of a difference with the exception that you will no longer be able to run apps that require root.
What benefit were you expecting to get by removing root?

[Q] Backing up Stock ROM noob question

I'm really a noob in hacking my captivate. So please bear with me with all my questions.
I've tried my best to educate myself about different mods, especially clockworkmod and nandroid. But I couldn't understand what each of these does. I did "Backup Current ROM" in ROM manager recently. (1) Is that considered to be a ROM backup that I can use in the future if I want to restore to stock ROM?
If so, (2) what is the different between that backup method and Nandroid method? I didn't do Nandroid backup because I don't understand how to install it.
(3) If not, am I screwed? Cause I already performed several mods: Voodoo lagfix and ATT app removal. But my captivate is running fine.
I just wanna make sure I can restore back to my Stock ROM when 2.2 update is available. (4) Do I need to restore stock ROM in order to receive and install 2.2 update?
Please educate me on this matter. Thanks!
I use nandroid once I installed a firmware or ROM and apps (Titanium Backup User apps + System data and restored on the ROM Missing Apps + Data) to make a backup.
Now I can restore Nandroid and all my settings/apps are there.
Use Titanium backup to get your apps/settings onto a newly flashed firmware or ROM.
2 good options... My favorite is to use rom manager to do a rom backup.

1) clockwork mod and nandroid (ROM Manager) are the same thing.
2) as clockwork stands RIGHT NOW (should be changing soon), backing up your current ROM does NOT change your kernel or modem. clockwork is also incompatible with voodoo (you have to disable voodoo to use clockwork, and you can restore voodoo once you're done)
3) to restore to stock "out of the box" state, you will need to use the odin one-click downloader for the Captivate.
4) the process for updating to 2.2 is unknown at this time, we won't know more until the option starts rolling out.

Thing is, this isn't EXACTLY "out of the box" state. This is a new install of the stock ROM, but it's missing some things that are on the original phone like the file with the easy to get unlock codes.
What I would like to do is backup the entire device as is when it comes out of the box. Basically create an image of the existing device. That way, if I have to revert at any point I know I'm not just reinstalling the stock ROM, but actually reverting to this phones original state.

Hmmm, good question. The only way to back up that I know of is to use ROM Manager. Since that requires rooting the "damage" may already be done.
The date of the kernel is different from the stock one as well, someone else tried to flash the original stock kernel but said while Odin showed the kernel took, the phone still shows the same with the different date. It would be nice if there was a way to get a completely original stock ROM, so if you have to exchange or something at ATT. I don't know how in depth they get at the store so maybe we'd be able to get away with just the Odin One-Click and they will accept it. If they check the kernel date though, you're screwed. Either way though, once the update comes out, rest assured that someone will post it on here for those of us not running completely original out of the box stock, which I always appreciate.

Gingerbread Update Question

Hi everyone
I have a question, I rooted my phone (Nexus One AT&T version) with Androot after that I downloaded Rom Manager and install cyanogenmod 6.1 before that I do a backup of my stock rom with Rom Manager and stored in my Sd card.
My question are, in case I want to upgrade to gingerbread the only thing I have to do is return to my original rom backup with Rom Manager and rooted again with the androot?
Thanks for your replies.

Yes that should be it.
Actually...
To use ROM Manager, you have to install a custom recovery and with a custom recovery
you won't be able to get the update OTA, since the update will reboot after download
and try to install via the original recovery...
But of course the update will most certainly be posted here as a update.zip that you
can install via ROM Manager...
//Nik
ClockworkMod recovery will install the OTA update as it doesn't check signatures.

I'm sure that within 24 hours (or 24 minutes) of the first release, a repacked update.zip for custom recovery will appear. If you're coming from Cyanogen, take a nandroid and Titanium backup first, then wipe data/cache, before proceeding.
Keep in mind we *don't* yet know if any root exploits remain in Gingerbread. They may well have patched up the "rageagainstthecage" exploit by now. If your bootloader is locked and you want it to stay that way, and you still want the option of root access... then wait for the custom recovery update.zip and use that.
Thanks to all for the answers, I don't think gingerbread have much changes like cyanogenmod 6.1, but in case Google announces tons of surprises with gingerbread I known the best way to return back to get the update.
Thanks

[Q] Restoring Root from restoring rom via CWM

Hey,
I've looked around and cannot seem to get a straight answer about this. So I'll keep this short
My question being: If I have lost root is it safe/recommended to gain root again by restoring a NANDroid backup (with root) or by flashing a new ROM (with root) as long as I can get into CWM (even without root)?
Thanks in advance!
You say you have lost root. I assume you're on one of the ICS roms?
Without root how you can restore nandroid backup?
CWM won't work without root.
correct

Yes I am on an ICS rom (MidNoteV2.0). It says that I have root, then to go do a NANDroid backup, I have to flash the abyss kernel, reboot into that recovery, make the NANDroid backup, then flash CF-LP1 kernel.
Problem is that when I reboot now, I no longer have root privileges, but I can still reboot into CWM recovery.

And yes I can still get into CWM and restore backups, or flash new .zip s even when it says I have lost root
Is it possible that I may have lost a more superficial part of root, where apps are not allowed to gain super user permissions, but the core functions enabled by root are still available?

What you've got right now is partial root, and that's the plague of all early ICS Roms. You can forget about making useful nandroid backups. Restore brings back partially rooted Roms no good to anyone.
The only way to gain full root again would be to do it all over again, which means
rooted GB Rom
Chinese Repack through Mobile Odin
Desired ICS custom Rom (with wipes where the dev says).
And there is no other way to make sure you're properly rooted.
I've done it 3 times already.

Yea it sucks :/ but I've just been reflashing the original ICS ROM I was using. And haven't encountered too many issues so far.
When you say root GB rom then Chinese repack then install ICS ROM, you mean first flash back a GB rooted rom and kernel, then flash a Chinese kernel, then it's rom?
Initially I actually just rooted my GB stock rom, then immediately jumped to a ICS ROM that included the new kernel. And I didn't end up using Odin once, I somehow mnaged it all through CWM.

In order to run eclipse v2.2, you would of had to been on stock 902 at one time.
How did you flash eclipse, bootstrap? Safestrap?
Safestrap loaded
Bootstrap was initially loaded, i then loaded up safestrap.

Okay. So, Is eclipse on your unsafe or safe side of safestrap?
Did you make a backup of stock in bootstrap before you flashed eclipse?
It is the "safe" rom. i was unaware of what these options did. I did take a backup before i did eclipse.. would this be the unsafe rom?

It should be unless you erased it with bootstrap.
Disable safe mode and see what is in unsafe mode.
For future: Here is a good safestrap guide to follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455888
the safe rom seems to be stuck in a boot loop.
I had followed the safestrap instructions, & that aspect has worked fine.
I tried toggling the safeboot option and trying the other backup.. boot loop.
*Going back to a stock ROM for these type of scenarios is lacking in info. Should be a sticky on any ROMS that need it.
Do you have any more ideas of how to get back to a stock rom?
The problem was that you used bootstrap and safestrap together. This creates problems.
I can help you get back to stock if you have some time.
PM me when you get a chance.

[Q] Is it a good idea to flash a rom on a "somewhat" rooted phone?

Hi, I'm running Benny's 4.3 (build number 3.04.651.2) Deodexed (because i do not see any .odex files in the system folder, right?) and I want to flash the update which keeps popping up in the notifications every 24 hours after clearing app data.
I tried doing the OTA update but my phone goes into TWRP. My biggest concern is flashing the stock rooted update because my phone really isn't rooted. I have SuperSu on the phone and sometimes I get "SuperSu has been granted permission" or something like that but Root Checker app says the phone does not have proper root access. I don't really know what is going on because I took my phone to a repair center to get it unlocked shortly after i got the official OTA 4.3 update. I read that you need to downgrade to 4.1 and then unlock the phone through SimUnlockHelper apk. When I got my phone back everything was working as it should and my phone is indeed unlocked.
My biggest concern is flashing a stock rooted rom because of the fact that my phone does not have proper root access. Would you recommend doing this and are there any precautions I should be aware of because I had nothing to do with rooting or tweaking android before since this is my first phone that runs android officially.
Thanks!

use the backup feature in twrp to make a nandroid and flash a stock rooted 4.3 rom. if it doesn't work restore your backup. if u need any info the sticky thread at the top of this section by bd19 will really help. read thoroughly. fyi you cannot ota with a custom recovery (twrp) you need stock recovery.

^This is the safest option @Andza195
BTW, imo, it should work, but just backup just in case. Also, if something doesn't work, the real best method is just to download the newest version of the ROM, back (everything that's important to you) up, wipe everything in TWRP except Internal Storage (because this is where the flashable .zip is at!) and flash the ROM fresh.
