[Help] Motorola Droid parts of touch screen unresponsive. - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

So basically I've had my Droid 1 since March of 2010, I LOVE my phone. Today I was out in the sun, and it just started freaking out, I put it on a table from my cool pocket for literally 4 minutes. Now two things are happening:
the soft key search button has stopped working(keyboard one still works), and the place where the back button is on my soft keyboard is borked.
Is there anything I can try/do to possibly attempt to fix the problem? I've never run into an issue like this before. :/

okay... so I gave it to my brother to look at and suddenly it's working again...
Is there anything that could cause this?

We don't really know what causes the touchscreen issue but we suspect that the moisture is the main problem. Also, a defective or improper charging or a bad flex cable can lead to something like that. I am facing exactly the same problem (paradoxally, after flashing a new ROM - coincidence maybe) but here it didn't dissappear. I will replace the digitizer. I think it's the only way to get rid of it. If it shows up again, I'm sorry!

When do you plan to change out your digitizer? If anything I'd love to see your results before I go for it.
Oh the joys of being a broke college student.

The same problem happened to my D1!! If it re-occurs then it means that your digitizer has broken. The only solution is to replace it or buy a new phone (If you do a search on "Droid" and "digitizer" you will find many people who have had this same problem)
I researched repair stores and finally settled on a place called Mission Repair in KS (missionrepair.com). Sent my precious Droid to them on a Tuesday and got it back as good as new on Friday for a cost (including Fedex) of around $90 - certainly a lot cheaper than a new phone.
Has been working fine again since.

I heard it is a common issue on the phone, you can use an application like multitouch visualizer (on the market) to check the functional parts of the screen.
The problem I have is with the keyboard, I was using the right key to pass the pages on kindle for android and now I have to press it harder, it also happened with one of the space buttons, thanks god those are 3...

Ends up I'm not entirely retarded, and got the extended warranty for 1.99 extra month. I traded it in, but the replacement has same issues. Might be time to upgrade my phone...

Try replacing Flex cable instead of digitizer.

If it's not damaged.. hold off on the digitalizer and cable replacement.. grab ya some descant packets (do not eat bags that come with new items that can't stand any moisture) ziplock it up with them.. with battery out of it.. leave it over night.. bam..

Oh.. and the OG doesn't like sweaty pockets or extreme humidity.. it's definitely your problem if not damaged.. bet you're in the south..

Hardware Problem What do I replace

I recently purchased some housing and screens for 3 Tilts I am planning on putting up on ebay. The phone with the problem was my original tilt that was sent back for a warranty repair but in transit the carrier ran it over with a truck or something. It came back with tire marks on the package. Needless to say this caused some trouble with the ATT warranty people. After it sat in my garage for a year I pulled it out.
Every thing seems to work now except for the touch on the screen. I know it is not the screen itself ( I installed it in another phone and it works). I have hard reset flashed and taken it apart various times. Nothing.
The new symptom is that i found out if I push really hard on the buttons on the front of the phone I can get the touch function to work for a second or two.
I want to know what part should I be buying. Do I need to buy the whole ribbon connector that twists itself from the front of the phone to the back or am I missing something else all together.

Screen goes black when I slide out keyboard

My Xperia is messed up....
Has NO damage... No water damage, hasnt been dropped, overheated or anything...
Last night I was going to respond to a text and slid out the keyboard and the screen went blue... okay...weird... slid it back, still blue. So I restarted it. Heard the "ding" for the power off button. Turned it off. Turned it back on. Started to respond again. Slid it out... No blue screen, just had black and white lines, then went black, but it would never come back to the regular screen.
I have NO idea what triggered this. NONE. I've had no problems with my phone whatsoever.
What I've dont to try and fix it:
-Turn it on and off (obviously, to get the screen back on)
-battery pull
-sim pull
-hard reset
I bought the phone off of EBay. Has no warranty. I got a warranty with Squaretrade for my fiance's cell phone and when he needed to make a claim (it would power off when it was clammed shut...no damage to it. Also you couldnt hear out of the phone at all)) they said they couldnt do anything. I decided that was worthless and that I'm not going to get a warranty with them. Smart move not getting one period, but Ive had bad expierences with them anyways...
What else can I do? I'm @ a total loss... I don't know what else I can do since I've dont the hard reset. I'm trying to avoid taking it to a cell phone repair place b/c I have a hard time trusing people with electronics now (long story) unless I know you.
Thanks for reading and helping if you can!!

Did yours just happen for no reason?...Out of the blue?
I have this problem on one of mine also....it appears the flexribbon has gone bad...lcd is good....but when the keyboard slides out the screen goes black...tried another board and lcd in the phone problem still persists...this only leaves the ribbon as the culprit.

Ill be sure to tell the people @ the service center what the problem could be. That helps alot. Upsets me that I had to do a hard reset for no reason and mess my phone all up, oh well!

Yup out of the blue
same problem here wildchild is correct its the rigid flex ribbon. unfortunately it will take a month before the parts arrive since its not readily available at Sony Ericsson service centers...
Unfortunately i just got this problem yesterday.
Suddenly, when i slide out the keyboard, screen fades and goes black.
When i slide it back screen is still on but black.
To bring it back i just click power button twice to put it to sleep and wake it up again. I assume this is the same problem and the ribbon cable is loose, correct ??
I was thinking of following one of the disassembly vids to try and open it and make sure the cable is connected correctly.
What do you guys think ? Give it a shot or too risky?
I am not sure if the ribbon cable is damaged and am assuming its just loose because the screen works fine without the keyboard out.
Any advice would be appreciated.
P.S - had the xperia 3 weeks now, bought it used (about 6 months) with no warranty, Its X1i running Energyrom 3.0 (05/08) build.
A month?? Man, that's a long time... geeee wiz. I asked them asn they said about 7-10 busimess days, so we will see... but I trust it'll be about a month since you said they don't have the parts. I shipped it off Friday, put insurance on it, and said a prayer. I hate my Quickfire, its my backup phone... HATE, LOATHE.... DIEEEEE lol.
Ive been searching for other phones to replace this one if i continue to have other problems... but i cant find one I like. i Love WM, the QWERTY, and touch. Felt like i was send my child off to school or something.
I was actually able to find the flex ribbons on ebay took 6 days to get them from china, bought two of them since I have 2 sitting here with the same exact issue....they were about 60 dollars a piece and are here already...will report back after I repair the phones....

hey man.. i got the same thing happened to my phone also.. slice keyboard out screen gose black... but phone is still running... why dont chu try the black card in ur box... give them a ring they should help u out... i bought my from ebay also... but lucky is a x1a so in melb which telstra sale it... check urs if is a x1a or not.. it should come with a warranty for 12 months... hope this can help...
I have this also, my pghone is 5 months old. Senrt it away and they didnt have parts. After 3 weeks Sony sent an exchange unit. Opened up the box but the exchange unit is broken! The optical pad doesnt work at all and when I make calls no one can hear me at all..
I had exactly the same problem, besides the regulary cracks
So ive send it in, and a week later ill got a new one. Even with a second battery lol.
The flex cable fixed my issue....so to confirm this is the issue....repaired mine this evening, working perfect, abit tricky to get it all apart but is doable....
Regards,
WC
I got my phone back from Sony on the 9th. They said there was a loose part. I sent it off on Aug 28, and got there on Sept 2, so it didnt take long at all like I thought it would. I was so tired of the other phone. Sad when a phone runs your life haha.
That was such a nice day...went and got fitted for contacts for the first time as well as a getting a new vision rx, came home with perfect vision and what was on my door step, my beloved X1i. I smiled sooooo big. I didnt expect it for a month! They said it should be 7-10 days at the service center though when I called them.
It was still under factory warranty, so I did'nt have to pay for the repair, but I sure would have paid if I had to... lol.
sigh having the same problem now
i used to be excited to put my treo 750 to sleep before when i changed to x1. but apparently i keep taking it out of the box again everytime i have to get my x1 repaired
i just got it back 2 weeks ago when i got fed up with the keyboard button problem.
now it seems i have to bring it back once again since the screen goes blank on me when i slide out the keyboard
hopefully they can fix it on the spot, maybe just a loose connection as compared to a broken ribbon.
was hoping to use the GPS when i go out of the country, paid and got the needed maps already. but i have only a week before i leave. hopefully itll get fixed by then

HD7 Display Replacement

Hello all, I just replaced a broken LCD and digitizer on my HD7 with a unit bought from eBay. It's from a supplier that I've used very frequently, so I trust the component. When I got the phone back together, it will sometimes boot, sometimes not. It will also sometimes display just fine, and other times it looks like it's garbled, or just not display at all. The screen will be blank and not react. I'm pretty versed at repairing phones, I've probably done 30 for myself and friends, so I'm pretty good at reassembly. Is anyone familiar with this issue and can maybe give me some ideas? Cause I'm flat out of them.
The other thing is that when I start moving the phone around after reassembly, this is when I start experiencing troubles. I tried putting electrical tape in places under the mobo to keep from grounding something out, but it doesn't seem to help. Any ideas would be great.
Did you put on gloves when you were doing the replacement. Cause like you I have done alot of screen replacements on a wide range of phones and I would have to say that there are devices out there were if something got grounded out while you are doing the replacement it tends to start doing all kinds of goofy things once the phone is back together. I have found that by wearing "gloves that do not conduct electricity" the chances of something like that happening is gone. Ive only had two devices do weird and strange things like some of what you have said. These were some of my first repairs and after changing to putting gloves on I haven't had a problem since.
Hope that helps and also I am about to replace the screen on a HD7 that I just bought just wanting for the screen so, I will let you know what happens.
Thanks, probably good advice. I've been very lax about using grounding protection of any kind. I've seen those guys who use the "finger condoms" where the rest of their hand is open. Couldn't hurt to use a grounding strap too, pretty cheap and easy precaution. The other thing I noticed about the phone was the SD that came with it isn't recognized by any OS, so wondering if there wasn't something else wrong with the phone.

[Q] G1 motherboard fault causing dead touchscreen

I have been trying to repair this phone, but the usual faults have not turned out to be the problem. This is the background on the repair efforts:
In my research I found 3 main causes for a dead touch screen.
1) Corruption of system software.
2) Failure of digitizer cable (hinge FPC)
3) Failure of digitizer screen (touch panel)
To check for #1, I flashed the firmware again (after a wipe). I downgraded to Android 1.5 because I wanted to root the phone and install CyanogenMod Android 2.2 Froyo.
This was a big mistake because I learned that when you don't have a working touch screen, you cannot get past the "Touch the Android to Start" screen.
So on to step 2 - replace cable (hinge FPC). I have a G1 parts phone that was lightly used in good condition before it was damaged. There was no damage to the sliding section, so I expected the hinge FPC to be in good condition.
So I installed the hinge assembly with its hinge FPC from the parts phone, but this did not work either.
So next I installed a new touch panel (digitizer screen), but that did not fix the problem either.
I had a chance to borrow a working G1 motherboard, and I was surprised to see that the phone was working with the borrowed motherboard.
So my question is whether my problem motherboard can be recovered with a software solution, or if these symptoms indicate a hardware failure.
I thought that a wipe followed by firmware flash would eliminate all soft system errors, but I am not sure if the wipe and flash really erase absolutely everything, or if there is something else I need to do to get it working again.
Thanks.
more than likly it was the point in the motherboard where the flex cable connects. try using some electronic parts cleaner.
i have ran into this a few times and simply replacing the motherboard has only helped a twice, when i cleaned it up it worked.
That sounds reasonable. I still have some Tweek. I'll give that a try. It worked with the same kinds of problems on computer sockets.
Okay. You are on the right track. When I went back to the phone, I actually got two taps out of the screen, which it hasn't done in a long, long time. (I was running keyboard only for a long time before I could take it down to fix it.) I attribute that to just disturbing the contacts with so many assembly/disassembly efforts.
After I applied Tweek to the joints, it ran well.... for about an hour. Trying again was no luck, so I don't think I'm going to mess with the contacts anymore. By the time you figure how infrequently motherboards come up for sale and the cost, I think I'd do just as well with a trade in on a flat-rate repair.
But at least now we know for the record that there is another cause of dead touch screens.
well i have about 13 motherboards, if your interested let me know
Thanks. What has been your experience with changing motherboards?
The reason I ask is because the service manual wants the phone to be tuned again after a motherboard swap. I see a lot of people changing motherboards, and I can't believe that is much of a problem when you don't see anyone complaining about the phone not working well afterwards.
A spare motherboard might be a good idea for a diagnostic tool. It would have saved me a lot of work changing the touch panel and cables if I would have had a motherboard to try first.
I thought I had a good spare in a damaged phone, but when I took it out the other day to test this phone, I found out it had physical damage too. The SIM holder and RF shielding were dented, but the killer was that the daughterboard cable connector was bent.
I suppose back when the phones were $900 you might try to fix something like that, but it's hard enough to do a connector swap on a computer motherboard. I can't imagine that even the factory has the equipment to properly swap the connector even if you can get the part.
How much do you want for a motherboard? On that famous auction site I've seen them go for around $10 to $30. I could kick myself for not buying the last one I saw at $7 because I thought I had a spare.

[Q] Screen - Hard Reset or new digitizer

Help/advice needed please?
My incredible S starting playing up with screen touches, didnt worry about it as it was sporadic. However I then lost the touch at the menu button, this prompted me to installMultitouch Vis Test and noticed that there was a double touch registration on the line up from the menu button. I then installed Screen Touch Test and this confirms there is a line from Menu button straight up the screen, as well as another line close to the left edge not registering any touch at all. The advice I am after is 1) is this a software issue as there is no visible damage, therefore do I go for a hard reset or 2)Is this a digitiser issue and do I go for a new digitiser (£50 from guy in the local shops or £15 of ebay and do it myself)
I have not rooted the rom the phone is all stock and not dropped or damaged it recently.
Cant be bothered with the pain of hard reset if I dont have to, but if it saves a digitiser I have no problem with that then. Equally dont want to get a new screen only to discover it needs a hard reset.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe you should try to boot into safe mode. You can do it by holding up or down volume button (don't remember which, try googling it) on boot when HTC splash screen appears (release power button first). This mode will start your phone without loading any application you installed. This way you can see if the issue is made by an application.
If it still don't work I would highly recommend doing hard reset. It is not that much complicated to reinstall after a hard reset. You can use an app like titanium backup to backup and then restore all your apps. I'm sure many people here can tell you that a hard reset is nothing because we are used to do it every time we flash a Rom and I for example do it at least 1 time a month.

Fixed screen, aftermath was damaged digitizer, however after a few days the digitizer kicked back in and worked fine. After a few month the screen became unusable. Long story short, I didn't replace the digitizer and it only got worse so I recommend that you replace it. If you do, I highly recommend getting the special tool for separating the glass and lcd from the housing.

Oh well very valuable lesson learned!! I bought a cheap £15 digitizer and tools from ebay and took time out on a saturday to replace it. First off the little tool to seperate the screens broke on first use...managed fine following the youtube videos. Separating the two screens was a bit tricky but eventually managed it. Then replaced the screen and connected/built it all back together. Switched it on and watched as it was obvious I had damaged the LCD, either during separation or putting it back together. There was no obvious damage but it was goosed.
Decided to take it to the local guy at the shopping centre with the little booth to see how much to replace both. Was quoted £80-85 and told it would be end of the week.....ah nearly a week without my smartphone! Got a text message on Monday lunchtime telling me its fixed and that would £70, got there and he only charged me £65. Phone display is better, phone is more responsive and less sluggish that it was before too, and this was without a hard reset. Very happy as was dreading a hard reset.
Lesson learned, dont attempt to replace screens on own, leave it to the guys that change about 30-40 each day.
I presume the sluggishness of the phone was related to the screen problems also. Was contemplating a new phone, but can hold off now until Windows Phones 8 get their act together and one of the manufacturers decide to make a phone that fits my needs.
Thanks for advice guys.
