Hi guys,
Picked up my wizard this morning. I knew out of the box that it wasn't going to be what I wanted and after reading for about a hour today I have sucessfully sim and cid unlocked my phone and flashed it to the 2.3 custom rom I found here.
The info on the forum cut my learning curve by about 90% so thx guys!

You get my vote for Noobie of the year!!!!
You came,
You read,
You flashed your Rom!
Thanks for showing us that sometimes it does happen this way.
Welcom to XDA-Dev and enjoy the Wiz...
I second kyphur's words!
Congrats and thank you for taking the time to research first!

Yes. Excellent job. Now you should work on seeing if you can fix the dropped calls issue with that ROM while using data apps
Good to see some successful posts.. out of many unsuccessful ones.
impressive! didn't think it was possible anymore but I have reason to continue living! thanks ec9!
In the famous words of myspace addicts...."you're in my top 8!"....
But since I'm on T-Mobile I can say...."you're in myfav5!"

That is amazing to see now. Very impressive.
hey!!
ec9, i feel exactly the same way as you!! i started the same way as you did. this device is awesome, i bought it the 1st week it was out went around looking how to customize it. after reading a lot on here ive successfully unlocked and flashed my 2nd ROM! it was moliskis rom. awesome site... Thank you all for making it what it is!
Just f*ucking Google it...
I too, came to XDA on a chance Google search. After spending several hours reading and chasing various links around, I identified my device as a G4, performed the reception fix, CID-unlocked it via the $42 IMEI site, and flashed it with Molski 3.0.0.0 -- NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. (Except for missed calls, non-responsive buttons, etc., but that's ALSO covered in a separate thread)
XDA is an amazing resource, with some incredibly talented people. All I can say to other noobs is to be patient, thorough, and to READ READ READ.
The answers are there, you just need to calm down and LOOK. Don't try SH*T until you're confident you know what you're doing. (Excuse my language)
I LOVE XDA-dev!!
Very Impressive.
Great !
This is a great forum for ANYONE to learn about their devices and see how much they can push to do the things that the devices can do.
I think right out of the box, these devices are kinda limited in their potential. The great guys here in this site make it better and help these devices achive higher grounds.
I am very glad that you had a great experience. I have been this forum for a little over a year and always had great help and experience.
I'm also glad to see someone actually knows how to READ!!
Even though I've had my Wizard for almost 10 months now, xda was one of the FIRST sites I bookmarked after getting it. Even though I registered right away, I read threads for several weeks before ever posting anything.
I had CID and SIM unlocked and flashed to two of Summiter's ROMs within the first 6 weeks I had my phone. That was all it took to become addicted. If I'm not on here reading every day, I go into "information withdrawal".
I'll never be at the level some of these gurus are at, but I'm learning some of the "how-to's" little by little -- and, expanding my knowledge of how to do things that I wouldn't have DREAMED of doing with this phone a year ago.
I'll admit it -- I'm HOOKED!!
Congrats on picking up the information so quickly. I'll have to echo what's already been said here about a GREAT first post by a NOOB!!
Im glad that some newbie's are able use the info here and in the immortal words of the crystal method "there is hope"
We must all give credit to all those ROM cooks for all there hard work and diligence and to the other members that have made it so simple to understand and learn through there trials and errors.

Sorry, I have to totally dissagree with all the praise you are getting.
How can anyone know that thier new device is not 'going to be what they wanted' in less than a day? You will have no base line to measure changes against.
I believe everyone should be made to use their new device for a month, dead standard! I can't help singgering, laughing and shaking my head in disbelief when I read about people complaining that they have to reset 4-5 times a day, that their device freezes, crashes, conflicts, or things don't work, etc, etc. Then they abuse HTC, MS and anyone else they can think of - some people curse and abuse their device, describing it as crap and shouldn't be sold like this.... then they tell you all the changes and mods they have made, and the rubbish they have installed and.... WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!!!!
My Hermes is dead standard and runs like a dream - constantly impressed by it.
I have no quams about people wanting to mod, develop, experiment, etc. but please use your device in original config for long enough to know if you are making improvements or making a mess.
IMHO anyway.
Welcome!
Since a longer time I'm reading the forum and thanks to you guys I learned a lot about my Wizard. I know now how to unlock and "unsimlock" my phone, how to flash it and many many more.
Before I will ask a question I'm reading and searching a forum to find that what I need, that's way until now I didn't post anything, so I want just to say hello to all members.
People gatherd here are very talented and helpfull people.
Best regards.

If you buy a truck for off-roading and find out the first day that it doesn't have 4 wheel drive, should you continue to drive it for 30 days to see if it will magically appear?
Congrats for researching, mate... I dunno if anyone else feels this way, but there seems to have been an influx of semi-retarded users posting recently saying things like "why won't my Sony Ericsson P990 flash???"... ok it's a bit of an exaggeration, but they're still bloody dum questions!
Like you when I found this site, I spent at least 2 days researching before I even tried to modify anything and everything I searched for came up with appropriate answers... in DEPTH! And the pay-off was quick and painless as a result... my universal now works - full stop. With the O2 ROM, it was a bag of poo compared to what it was made for, and I say that after 8 months or so of usage with original ROM.
I will be pointing resident idiots to this thread too from now on. Many thanks for your intelligence, it's what contributes to this site being as great as it is
Geez. this is the first time I've seen this post. That was like the XDA Developers Hall of Fame at the beginning. Anyway, congrats to the original poster and all who learned the right way. Mods can we re-title this thread "The Perfect Newbie" and make it a sticky to replace some of the outdated ones?
To be or not to be Noob ........
There are loads skulkers like myself that have never bothered to post.
I bow to the superior knowledge of the Windows Mobile gods and keep my trap shut until I have learned / read enough to say something intelligent on the topic.
Most things are clearly labled and easy to find.
Some of the useless post just add clutter and makes it difficult to find the truely useful info.
There will always be impatient PFY's and noob's that can't be bothered to search.
Search + Google is your friend.
Howdy all,
I'm new to these forums and figured I'd just introduce myself and say hello (as I do on all forums I join).
I'm Rozza C and I currently own a G1 Android phone. I've been browsing the forums for a long time now, but never took the plunge to join, until now.
Anyway, that's about all I have to say.
Look forward to seeing you all in the forums! =)

I hope you enjoy to be part of this community as I do.

Yeah I'm nearing the end of my contract now, so I'll be able to upgrade soon.
Problem is...I don't have any money, seeing I just finished university and haven't found a job yet! =O
So I might be sticking with the G1 for a little while longer...
^ Understand... except different situation. Got a job but a wife(well fiance) and child who suck all the money I earn away from me LOL...
Im thinking I'll go with a G1 myself also or a HTC tilt 2..... G1 would have to be unlocked (go AT&T)
LOL
I'm in the UK and I'm happy with my current network (T-Mobile)...
I just hope they give me a good renewal deal...
Welcome to XDA - you'll soon find yourself getting addicted!
t-mobile were doing the desire on an upgrade for free from what i remember, this was about 2 weeks ago though, but that does depend on your tariff! (this was for £25 a month)
They're decent phones, my brother got one recently and they beat the pants of my hero.... bring on that 2.1 update.....

Hi Rozza C.
Just a few tips to make friends...
Post questions in threads that have nothing to do with the actual topic
Start new threads, asking questions that are the top-most answered questions in the forum
Download cabs from developers that have spent a great deal of time making a product, and then post it as your own work and take credit for it
Yeah, basically don't do any of the above and you'll be okay

Welcome to XDA Rozza!!
Keep THIS THREAD in mind if in the next couple months you start forgetting to do things like eat and go to work. There is help if you fall too far down the hole
EDIT: 09/09/2010
The Wiki is comming along nicely, a thank you is in order to everyone who contributed. Of course it can always be improved, as such I am keeping the original post below. While we still don't have a great following for the DX on XDA we at least have a nice and organized page in which you can find links to the major breakthroughs and how-to's. If you are new to the DX and are looking for a place to begin, thanks to the fine people on this forum the XDA Droid X WIKI (Found Here) is a great place to begin
As new things are discovered for the Droid X we encourage you to add them to the Droid X WIKI, it can always be removed later if need be. It is a great start however. Thank You all, and good work.
From Sleuth255: Just a quick (slightly off topic) note to also say that XDA mods are here to help. The basis of XDA-developers is after all, development, and it is within device specific development forums such as this that all the magic happens. So here is my promise to all Droid X/Android XDA developers using the facilities of this forum: If you need help keeping a development thread "on topic", PM me and I'll place XDA's cosmic moderating powers at your disposal. Obviously, there's give and take here; we're a community based on idea sharing after all, but the point remains: Let's work together to make the Dx something truly amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have more reading to do so I can further acquire "mad Dx/Android skills" without having to resort to noob tactics.
Original Post:
So I have just come from my Droid Incredible... Yesterday as a matter of fact... And could not help but notice the complete lack of organization of all significant breakthroughs for the Droid X. As well as a lack of anything at all in the WIKI.
It actual made me miss the XDA Droid Incredible forum, which was a joke in comparison to the XDA Droid (original) forum... Point being it doesn't say a lot for our Droid X Forum...
SO! I figured I would put out a request to get this forum a bit more organized, even if that means doing so through the XDA Droid X wiki. At least here we can place links to the most significant breakthroughs, etc. I will start working on it myself as soon as I locate some of the more important breakthroughs, such as root, bootloader, Froyo upgrade and downgrade, and any others.
Find the Droid X WIKI Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Droid_X.png
I invite everyone to help, after all not everyone was reading the forum from the start, and just for kicks some time, try searching "root" on any of these forums, you might as well just start scrolling through the pages without searching, because you'll get about the same number of results...
EDIT: So I have decided it is not the lack of effort for this forum as much as the number of occupants. Even the Droid Incredible Development forum (which is considered to be a phone lacking development backing) is being viewed by around 200 people at the moment of writing this. Ours (DX Development) currently only has 20 occupants... I have yet to see a phone in which XDA was not the main forum used for communication, perhaps this is the first?...

You are correct.. I am sad as well coming from the HTC touch where the XDA following was huge...
There isn't so much love for the X here on XDA and you are not alone in hoping it changes!
I'll help out when I get back in town tonight. This place is not user friendly.

BUMP!!!

Yeah I agree... Seems like a popular enough phone, apparently not with the devs though. So, I have decided to go ahead and start building my own rom. My first theme is almost done too...

I agree, with everyone who has posted so far. I'm bummed that there aren't people flooding these X forums... I'm not great at development or anything, but have done a decent amount of information compiling for the Wiki at the server lab I manage, and would be willing to help contribute in any way I can!
Agreed.
I usually lurk around in XDA, but it is the first place I check out DX info.
I'll help with whatever I can.
NOOB would love to help
Although I am not new to XDA forums, ( I owe my sanity to you guys for getting me through some of the hairy spots in the WinMo days), I am totally new to Android. I started with the HTC Aria, then got tired of AT&T's BS, so I went to Verizon (where I now have 3G in my home!!). I started there with the Droid 2 but I wanted a better screen and the extra memory so I just picked up my Droid X (after waiting 3 weeks) today. I'm excited, but I know that there are deficiencies - such as no update yet for the DX.
I don't know what I can do to help, but I've always learned that the best way to get acquainted with something is to sometimes just dive in with both feet. I'm just a lowly System Admin Manager for an IT company. DROID X excites me and we truly do need to bring in whatever is needed to get our membership to a level that's worthy of Moto's 'flagship' phone.
Just let me know what I can do to help and I'm there - as I said, I owe you guys big time.
Maraming salamat (many thanks),
Miguel
Now that this is stickied... you should change the title and first post to something along the lines of: "Look Here First" "New to the Droid X" "Noob ALERT!!"
Lol, ok.. maybe not the last one but something similar. Then edit the first post to something explaining the wiki or just the link.
It will help out on confusion in the threads and open ppl eyes to things that are going on and getting lost in the shuffle.
The biggest issue I have seen, is that XDA is an HTC forum, and the Devs dont mess with the Motorolla devices. Other forums have devs that work on the DX and that is where the traffic is. P3Droid, Koush and Birdman have completed the most significant breakthroughs, and they are not a part of this forum. I wish this place had more of a DX following too...for now, I stick with MDW.
Well I just recieved my DX yesterday. Thanks to this great wiki and the people behind it, I was able to root and do some modifying with in the first hour of having my phone, and I didn't have to tear through the forums. Thanks for all of the effort and keep up the good work.

I like MDW alot as well, man, but I DO notice that a good number of posts there will link back to something here in the DX forum on XDA. So, it seems that the higher ups at MDW do at least lurk or contribute here as well.

after 2 months, I still want to keep my 2.1 OS (in case I want to start some coding on it & 2.1 is a safe version to test on). But I will definitely upgrade to official 2.2 OTA.
btw, is there a list of reasons in the wiki to root & upgrade to 2.2?

Welcome aboard. Just make sure you read everything you can before asking a question. I usually ask Google first before I post in a thread. You can also use the hand search feature at the top of the forum.
I say this cause ppl can get pretty heated for threads started asking questions or posting information that has already been answered or giving.
You can always pm me or hit me up on gtalk. A lot of ppl do and I enjoy turning the light bulb on for ppl lol
I've been lurking since I got my new phone, glad to be here. I'm rooted on 2.2 OTA and have learned some about the signed boot loader and latest updates via lurking and searching different forums each day. The wiki looks very complete as far as I can tell, great job!
Thanks for all the work on the Wiki. Great stuff!
I'm coming up to speed on Android/DX now. Very cool platform. I'll be helping more/developing for the Dx soon.
I may not post here much but I try to pay attention and read as often as I can.
P3droid is also a member here as jimmydafish.
Motorola devices will always be second class citizens on this forum...just the way it is.
Hello thar XDA, I thought I'd introduce myself seeing I am registered on the forum but have only really been lurking around. Sorry if I have put this topic in the wrong place. So, my name is Nate (as you can tell) I own an SGS2, running XXLP7 (is that the latest one for South Africa?), running SiyahKernel 3.5.2 and loving it. I'm really loving SiyahKernel (thanks Gokhanmoral, God bless you), not had any problems at all with it. His kernel sort of encouraged me to play around with my GS2 but not doing anything even remotely extreme seeing as I'm still relatively new to Android (got my phone on December 18 2011). I'm looking forward to interacting with the community and would love to learn android development but have got limited time (my last year of college).
Best regards,

Help!!!!!
Uh guys, I hate to say it but I did something stupid with my SGS2. I used Rom Toolbox Pro and installed a boot animation (went fine) as well as a battery icon tweak. That did not go so fine, as the status bar disappeared. THinking I could restore the SystemUI.apk I tried it and now my phone is stuck at bootloop. I neglected to make a backup, so will I have to start from scratch? Please help, I'm seriously stressing about it
Regards, Nate
Edit: Ok, that was kind of extreme. I need help to fix this, anyone know what's going on???
Edit2: BUMP
I feel like an idiot, I am personally a galaxy note 2 rooted and custom rom'd user. The G1 was my first android phone years ago. I got 2 g1's for my mom and dad and am trying to get a custom recovery on them. I have rooted both, (1 on 1.5 and the other 1.6) and cannot even see clockwork mod rom manager in the market. I'm guessing because it is such an old android build. What the hell do I do to get a custom recovery on these? All the sites I have found that host amon ra 1.7 do not have the file any more. I wish it was just as easy as installing rom manager, but I canot find it in the market. Please help me, my parents are without phones and I look like a fool.

Ok, first, I will say THANK YOU. As I have already ready that and every other thread and must have missed the section that I just now found.
Second, you need to learn how to talk to people, because at risk of sounding like a keyboard cowboy, I am not the type of person that people talk to that way. I am not trying to flame here, I am thankful that you just helped me, but please understand that there is a right and wrong way to talk to people.
Again,
Thank you for helping me see what I had preciously overlooked.
Seriously... No need to be on a high horse here fella, trying to help you understand how and when to post in a forum, if you spent any time in the stickies you would see rules on where to post, theyre very basic and usualy shouldnt even need to be said as theyre kinda obvious. When you hit the search key it may be kinda hard at first, but then you realize its sorted by date, and when "recovery" pops up 30 times in the past fews feeks you haved to assume thered might be something for you in there
And yes i am just trying to help so i appreciate you saying thank you but really, your on the internet, dont be tough, i and everyone else will talk to you however we want, no one is tough on the internet, dont pretend like people care who you are and just be happy you were pointed in the right direction

Lol, I have been a member of this forum longer than you, if you want to talk to me, I will pm you my phone number. I will also fly to see you. I can afford that. I dont live in my parents basement. I would love to continue this conversation in person, and will arrange it if you oblige, pm me. Please.
Im glad you made it out of your parents basment, again no one cares, no one cares how much money you have or that you dont have a fear of planes. No one cares how long youve been on the internet or members of a forum. And especially no one cares how tough you are. Feel free to waste your time flying down to see me, i and no one else will care that you do.
And for the sake of pointing out the obvious again, saying youve been a member of xda longer than i just shows that you should know where and when to post and just be greatful you got help anyhow, how about you show how tough you are by fighting the urge to even repond to this and learn to let it go, be greatful, and most important, be quiet

Again, thank you for your help I honestly appreciate it. I just thought you came across a little harsh originally. No point of getting tough like you said, thanks again.
you know i should apologize too, i used to be very hot tempered back in the day and have come down to a normal level over the years, i appreciate you responding in kind
to clarify my purpose is to help people here and some time i come off as harsh only because im busy at the moment or get tired of similar question being asked
anyhow if you need any further help just ask, im around frequently and enjoy helping - just remember this isnt a **** comparing contest so we can leave it at that
good luck on rooting your phones
