Hey guys, the other day I went from apex 7.2 to MIUI.
I can no longer enter download mode. I can get into recovery by rebooting into it, but i cannot 3 key into either recovery or download.
I have never had a problem getting into either.
Is there an app or something that will enable me to enter download mode? It is not in the power/reboot screen of miui..
Or any other way? I have tried pretty much all the button combinations I have read and none work..

Make or buy a Jig. Easy how to is here. You can buy them relatively cheap but usually take a while to ship.

I think this is using some form or fasion of the 2.3.3 GB build. I've been noticing several, including myself, having problems with download mode after flashing to this build. Problems occur even after 2.1 or 2.2 restock from odin one click. Just a bit of information for you.

I have never had problems getting into download mode after flashing GB bootloaders. It really depends on what key combos you are trying.
Doesn't MIUI run on Froyo/Eclair bootloaders? Have you tried using the ADB command? what about Vol up/down and insert USB?

I've tried everything. Nothing worked. Even the take everything out, hold volume buttons and plug in usb trick didn't work. I had to adb reboot download. I had to use kies to install drivers for my phone to be recognized in download mode. All sorts of things were going on.

how far can you get? that happened to me (got a phone where the key combo didnt work). i left the USB cable plugged into the phone and computer. then opened a CMD prompt, typed "adb reboot download" and powered on my phone, hit enter then kept hitting the UP arrow and ENTER hoping it would catch the phone. looked like this:

I9000 GB BL key combo is:
Volume up + Power --> Recovery
Volume down + Power --> Download
So if you are going to try Volume up + Volume down + Plugin USB, you sure wont get into download mode

Either way, every combination was tried. Regardless of selection, recovery mode was the only thing that would pop up.
I do not see why I would need a jig? Everything else works fine. I can get to recovery via the reboot menu. Just the download mode does not work.
I have not tried the adb commands.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can read up what you need and how to do this?
Also for those who are wondering:
Had apex 7.2
Odin one clicked back to stock..
rooted, installed cwm
then installed miui
no more download mode.

I just posted a thread on the topic of ADB and CM7. Considering MIUI is based off of CM7, I don't see why it wouldn't be the exact same.

As far as i know there is no download mode in the extended power menu.
And Twicebak3d thanks for that, taking a look now.
Why are you so resistant to trying a jig? Seriously you have been going at this for 2 days you could have made 50 jigs by now.

I am not being resistant. I simply do not actually need to do anything in download mode as of this time.
I am simply concerned that I can no longer simply just enter download mode when I need to.

Yeah tried many times not working at all <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0) thats what messege pop up in on odin screen
stay on "File analysis" for a long time when hit start and when hit master clear it stays on Master Clear start for forever and nothing happening.
You have to get your phone into the following screen to use Odin.

The picture you showed is the recovery menu. You need DOWNLOAD mode, like the above poster shows a pic of. I wouldn't worry about master clear right now, just get into download mode. Try all the button combo's in the earlier link, or let the phone boot as far as it can, then try adb commands.
Edit, also, did your 3 button recovery/download options work before you tried flashing? That should be the first sentence on every ROM thread, test your buttons before you flash!
Do this:
*Download captivates usb drivers
1.Download 1 click odin stock rom
2.Execute the one click odin stock rom
3.turn off your device
4.press volume down, wile pressing it connect the usb cable to your device
5.Once odin detects it "yellow colored retangle comXX" press start.
6.wait till is done, after that congrats you have reflashed your device with stock rom.
Here is my problem
How can I get there I mean i tried volum keys+powerbutton combo and what I am getting is this picture flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5095026553/

Also, what ROM were you trying to flash? what were you doing to cause this? If you were flashing an I9000 rom, try holding vol down then plugging in usb, or something similar. The button combo is different for those roms.
If your device is hardware lock't meaning, you cant access download/recovery mode by button combination, your pretty much screwd, unless you had clockworkmod recovery in your sdcard root and a nandroid backup...

So you have ClockworkMod Recovery? Have you tried reinstall packages option to get to the ClockworkMod Recovery screen? If you did a Nandroid Backup you're fine. Just select reinstall packages and you should have the green lettering of the Clockwork Recovery and you should be able to get your Nandroid backup running.
Okay, I recently bricked my phone, here's what you do.
First, open up the odin and leave it
Then, turn off your phone.
Third, hold BOTH the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time
Fourth, While holding down both of these buttons, plug in your phone to your computer via USB
Fifth, Odin should detect your phone and a yellow comort thing should show up in Odin.
Sixth, Press START

Yes so I did
1. open Odin,
2.then press volume down not touching power button
3.then plugin usb while continue pressing power button
and now i have got phone charging symbol on the screen ,
odin detected as com4 device and I have got directly in recovery mode.
pull the battery first
remove your sim and external sd card
open Odin one click
hold volume down (do not touch the power button)
plug in the usb (keep holding the buttons until the download screen appears)
if that doesn't work
unplug the usb
pull the battery
close Odin one click
open odin one click
hold volume up and down
plug in usb (keep holding volume buttons until download screen appears)
press start
yes but it does not seem working as I tried apply update.zip from memory card by pressing power button as selection but nothing happening not even wipe data/partition option

I'm guessing a jig is your last option?
Does the phone boot normally? Or does it always go to recovery on boot? If it boots normally, you should be able to fix the recovery.
ALWAYS recovery
A jig is probably your only option then.

Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.

yes I know how to go to download mode via the 3 buttons , this is not my first time using Samsung mobiles and they all the same
and also not my first time doing root and changing rooms
but this is the first time I face this problem and only in this galaxy s 3 mini (I've rooted another galaxy s 3 mini before and there was no problem with booting into download mode)
also I know that the power button is for selection (I already mentioned that in my post )
but it doesn't give any respond (only in recovery mode) while there is no problem with the power button if I used it with any other place in the system

Try this :

Your problem sounds similar to this one. I assume when you say 'blank screen' that the screen is powered on?
Power off the phone, hold down VolUp + VolDown + Power for 4 to 5 seconds. Then release ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Now press Volume Up. Now hopefully you will be in download mode even if you can't see that you are. If it doesn't work try it again a couple of times. The reason that you have to press Volume Up is that a warning screen is actually displayed before the phone lets you into download mode.
The phone will give you no other indication that its in download mode and won't 'recognise Odin' when not in download mode. Make sure you have Samsung USB drivers (comes with Samsung Kies) installed on your PC.
Oh yeah and by the way the thread I've linked to suggests you have to reflash the bootloader to fix the 'blank screen' problem.

He wan't, but he can't without Download mode
What about the Galaxy S III Mini logo, is it there when he boots into system?
Note: This trips knox as always.
This has been tested and working fine on my T800 and other devices that people confired. I'm not responsible for any bricks btw. Twrp Method:
VOLUME UP = RIGHT BUTTON OF VOLUME. VOLUME DOWN=LEFT VOLUME BUTTON
1. Download the twrp.tar on your pc and supersu.zip on your device. Also, download odin on your pc
2. Open odin on your pc.
3. Put device into download mode by turning off the tab s first. Then hold power, home, volume down button all at the same time till download mode comes up.
4. Hit volume up to continue
5. Connect tablet to pc.
6. Hit the ap or PDA button in odin.
7. Select the recovery tar.
8. Untick auto reboot in odin
9. Hit start
10. Now force reboot by holding power, home, volume up and volume down buttons at the same time till it reboots.
11. Power device off again.
12. Reboot into recovery by holding power, home, volume up buttons all at the same time till twrp pops up.
13. Hit install button in twrp.
14. Select the supersu zip you downloaded.
15. Swipe to install and reboot.
Done!

CFAUTO-ROOT Method(Confirmed working on Lollipop) Incase twrp fails...

Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA (AP in odin v3.x) button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, manually shutdown your device and boot with VolUp+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!
Flashing with Odin
1. Put your phone into download mode. To do this turn the phone off and then press volume down+home button+power button at the same time. You will then get a warning saying press up to continue and down to cancel, press volume up and you are now in download mode
2. Start Odin
3.At this point please make sure that ONLY TWO OPTIONS TICKED are "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time" (otherwise you could end up with a very expensive paperweight)

4. If there was only one tar file when you extracted the firmware put it in the PDA section. This just means this file contains the PDA+PHONE+CSC all in one firmware
If there are three files they should have one of PDA/PHONE/CSC in their names look for this and put them in the corresponding section.
5. Plug your device into the computer, wait for the drivers to install and then wait for the ID:COM section to turn blue.
6.ONCE AGAIN CHECK YOU HAVE NOT TICKED RE-PARTITION OR PUT IN A PIT FILE
7.Press start and the flash will begin, once this has started do not remove the usb cable or turn of your computer or the device the phone will reboot once the flash has finished.

Hello,
I've tried several times and it doesn't work, TWRP not showing, only stock recovery
I've flashed with Modified CF-AutoRoot and it's working.
L.E. : None is working. I get SuperSU update binary Installation failed.
L.E. 2 : I've wiped data/cache a few times and re-downloading the TWRP tar file, and now it is working. Thank you!

Update: Added CFauto-root method just in case
Works perfect for me with twrp-method. Lollipop is blazing fast. No lag at all.
So.. Is this for previously unrooted devices? If so, does it trip KNOX?

This is for people who want root on lollipop since flashing the new firmware wipes it. And yes it does trip knox. I'll add a note that it does in the first post
Added recovery links for T700/T705. Forgot to do so

Bump. Incase any T705 users needs it ☺

Good looking out @DUHAsianSKILLZ worked like a charm on the upgrade!

I'm sure one of the things new users will find confusing is the precise button combination needed to trigger each of the different boot states, download, recovery and normal modes. Pressing volume up will lead to a boot state different from pressing volume down, since the two buttons are externally the same (the volume rocker). Maybe you can highlight or emphasize the UP or DOWN since it's easy to overlook.

Edited my post with volume up=right side volume button and volume down=left side of volume button. Also edited a few other things to make it more clear. Let me know if I am missing anything else. Thanks!

Maybe a little confusing for t700/705 users as their volume button is the opposite I believe.
I think your instructions were clear enough. The user of the device should at least know which is up and which is down tbh. No need to spoon feed imo.
Actually, if you install TWRP from odin, you don't even need to download the supersu separately. First, download twrp package for your device. Install it with odin. From my experience, you don't need to disable the auto-reboot option in odin this time (but you need that when you're installing full ROMs and want to keep the custom firmware).
Shutdown.
Boot into recovery, by pressing volume up, power, and home buttons.
Confirm that TWRP recovery is installed.
Now reboot. At the moment you try to reboot, the custom recovery will offer you to install SuperSU. Go ahead and accept it.
Now reboot, go into google play and update your SuperSU.
One nice side effect of installing TWRP this way is that you may want to keep TWRP without having root. TWRT is useful as a recovery for backups etc, but there are some apps, like AT&T Uverse, that will actually break if you have root.
