Hey guys hoping somebody can help me with an issue my friends are having issues with their captivates. They just got them. And they can text anybody no problem sending or receiving. But calling they can call anybody except each other. Everytime they try to call each other it just instantly stops the call. I have a captivate. And but their sim card in mine but it did the exact same thing. Were in canada and I'm on rogers and their on mts. All our captivates are 2.2. Any ideas?

Stock 2.2? and did you try calling another captivate on an USA network?

Rogers captivates on 2.2 have that time stamp issue which may be causing the problem. My friend and i both have cappys and had the same problem till we used this fix. Go into date and time un check manual change timezone to a -3 timezone then manually change the time to the right one

Let me prefix my post with: please don't call 911 just to "test" your phone if this post title has worried you. There is no reason to believe you have a 911 calling problem (more explained below) and you will take up valuable resources from others who actually have an emergency and need immediate help.
I am the owner of a Samsung SGH-i896 Captivate. Today I had to call 911. The call failed. It acted like it was placing the call to 911, it said "Emergency number" on the screen as it acted like it was dialing, and then in half a second the call failed. Other calls worked fine. I had service. Thankfully I was able to use the phone of a friend that was with me to successfully dial 911.
I know this is really really horrible, especially since my little warning at the top of this thread... but when I came home I removed the SIM from my phone and tried to dial 911 to see if it would ring. It didn't work. The lock screen says "No SIM card." and "Emergency calls only". The phone shows full reception bars. When I dial 911 the screen flashes "Out of service area" at the top with a phone picture underneath and then the text"Emergency number". This comes up for 1 second then the dialer exits to my home screen.
I'd like your help to track down this problem.

911 is used in Canada. And the SGH-I896 is a Canadian phone.
Have you thought of it more as a network issue, and not a phone issue? I have unfortunately had to dial 911 from my Captivate before, and it worked fine. I'm using an i9000 ROM with an i9000 modem in non-3G service areas.

I'm not sure then does 112 work? Don't call just to test it but it should work I had this problem on an early i9000 rom 112 worked for me... this should be moved to Q&A though it is a bit of an issue... I guess no one realty tests the emergency call features...

Perhaps the issue warrants the attention of developement.
I had to dial 911 on my phone. live in us using cognition 4 and it would not work.
Hmm perhaps this does does need more attention if it still doesn't work on cog 4... I had this problem when the first froyo cog rom came out... I do believe it was brought up then & 112 was the temporary fix but I can't believe 911 still doesn't work...

112 gives me the same "Out of service area" like when I dial 911 without a SIM.
Alright, so I installed Rogers stock 2.2. I tried with both SIM in and SIM out. I'm not able to dial 911 in either case. Call fails with SIM in, and I get the "Out of service" message when SIM is out.
Sounds like there is definitely something wrong with my phone.
Ok so I can confirm that 911 does work on cog 4.3 on the i897 on att in us so I think it does have something to do with the missing nvdata but why would you still be able to make regular calls & not emergency calls that seems backwards hmm?

I have an i897 and have have used it on phoenix (not sure the version), and andromeda 2.1. Not sure how to test, but that does seem like an network problem. Phone not connecting properly.
I tried putting in a SIM from another carrier. 911 emergency calls don't go through.
I tried putting in a SIM from another carrier. All calls work, not 911. Tested on Rogers and Bell Canada.
Thought I herd on android central podcast that the problem was known?

I just checked. Looks like that's a problem for the Vibrant and only when calling from the lock screen. Seems unrelated to this issue, since those people can still call from the dialer once they unlock their phone.
For anyone who has this problem in the future: I'm pretty sure it was related to having lost the phone's original /efs/ folder including nv_data.bin. You have to have a backup nv_data to restore from to fix the problem, or else it needs to go to samsung for servicing to be re-flashed. This fixed my phone. (well, got a replacement...)
For anyone who has this problem in the future: I'm pretty sure it was related to a bad upgrade to 2.2 via Samsung Kies... Replacement phone is working fine for now.
I would like to know why everytime i recieve a Call my Data Connection broke down. With my old Androids i didn't have that Problem. :-( Is there a possibility to Mod/Hack this so you can be Online and make a Call together?

This seemed to happen with Nexus S as mentioned in the Nexus S forums. Maybe its an Android problem?

Didn't have it on my HTC Desire, or SGS, so it must be something with O2x firmware. =/
Example:
When i recieve a call, i got a program who looks up the callers name and adress so i know whos calling before i answer, even if i don't have him/her in my contacts.
With O2x i get an error instead, saying that there's a network error and i don't see who it is.

On my captivate when i text somone, on my phone it clearly says "sent" but the other person has often told me that he/she has not received anything...
this happens abouy once every 20 texts. i use the stock messaging app that comes with the apex rom.
also another thing that happens is that i get the text 2-3 hours later than when the other person sent it. this happens less, but its still very annoying.
any permanent or temporary(cause i may switch to verizon soon) solutions are welcome. thanks

how long have you suspected the problem?
have you checked your apn settings? btw what carrier are you? what country are you? might want to fill out your xda user info and signature since you have 300 posts... it would answer some of the questions i had.
the more info we have, the more we can do.
He said Apex, which could mean a few things, but assuming he's on the latest release, that means "DC 4.0 JVS Kernel" and the KC1 modem

ATT does that; I'm presuming that it's because their network is terrible.
I've had this problem with both the Captivate on various ROMs and the Inspire 4G on stock.
I have yet to find a solution, unfortunately.
I had a similar issue when I went to the fasty rom...it ended that the apn number didn't get transferred....just Google it and u find a list of numbers for what ever region your in. Then go to apn settings and manually had the number

Hello , I have a samsung captivate with rogers and am having an issue with the phone calls. When I aswer the phone I can hear the person on the other sode but they can not hear me, when they redial the same story over again. I have to call them back so they hear me. Sometimes it catches the phone call right away. I haven't noticed any pattern of when or which calls has ot been doing it to. My roommate has the same phone i896 and his phone sgarted doing it a week later after It happened to mine. As I flashed cmd7 woth the hope that itl change I was dissapointed as it kept on doing it. He was with the android 2.1 software untill two months ago then he installed 2.2 and now 2.3 it just keeps on happening. Called rogers, they told me to call samsung and from samsung I was told ots a rogers issue so they have to deal with it. Has this been happening to anyone else and if so how did u solve it? Any odeas as I'm clueless from now on.
have you tried to change the modem version? try jpm or jvt modem
Settings/Device Settings/Disable Hi fi recording. That should solve your problem.

Hi all, I have been using the Stock Extra from the here for a number of weeks now with no issues. Until yesterday when my galaxy s stopped making or receiving calls or text messages, I get an error message saying text not sent & when I try to dial out it goes straight to call ended. I have tried a restore which didn’t help and I have even went back to XXJVS Rom 2.3.5 but still no calls or texts ! I rang Virgin mobile yesterday and they did all the usual checks and they said it must be a setting on the phone causing the problem as they cant see anything being blocked or barred. When I use my card in another phone it works fine ! My wife’s sim card wont work in my phone either so it has to be the phone ! Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I am Desperate now I have only had the phone 3 months!

Try a different modem firmware...
I had several issues with several different ROMs but in most cases anything to do with calls, data, wifi, GPS, or BT were solved by flashing a different modem... I didn't notice which country or carrier you're using but I'm in Canada using Rogers and the best modem I've found for signal strength, and keeping all of the other radio related functions working has been UGKC1 This is dependant on where you are and who your carrier is though.

I have this exact problem with a Galaxy S I just got back from a RMA - the antenna was dodgy or something and it would get poor signal everywhere. Now signal is fine but it won't make texts/calls, again not the SIM.
Does your mobile internet work? Mine does which is weird..
Have you also checked your APN settings??
