I was running on cognition and I decided to apply a speed kernal. I did, but I was not aware that it wasn't compatible with froyo. Now my phone shows the AT&T thing, says some weird techno voice thing, then restarts the process. I have tried holding volume up and volume down and power in order to get to recovery menu and it doesn't work. I have tried syncing with my computer, but it wasn't set on debugging beforehand so odin does not recognize it. I have tried everything I can think of yet to no avail.(spelling?) I really like my captivate and I could not bear to part from it. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried using ADB to get into download mode. The only way to fix this will be to reflash stock and start over. You could also use Odin one click to flash back to stock as I dont thing debugging needs to be on for the download mode to work

Do not panic, did you pull the battery when the voices were going, that was voodoo installing and is normal.
You can recover and will

I have tried getting into recovery again, but it goes through the cycle no matter what.
First: I downloaded the USB drivers from the Samsung Website and installed them.
Second: I downloaded Odin once click
Third: I take the battery out of my phone along with the sim card and micro SD card. Then I replace the battery
Fourth: Open Odin and plug in the USB sync cord
Fifth: I hold down the volume up and volume down buttons on the phone an insert the USB sync cord.
Sixth: A droid is pictured sweeping inside of a yellow triangle.
Seventh: I wait
Then after that, Odin doesn't recognize the phone.
Are you using the original cord that came with phone? Are you using a desktop or laptop? have you tried different usb ports? Have you tried the drivers on the odin thread?

I got it off ebay and it did not come with a cord. I bought one off ebay that claimed to be OEM. I am using a laptop. I will try different USB ports but I dont think that is the problem. My computer recognizes the phone, just not Odin. I will try the drivers on the thread.

I have tried that several times but it doesnt work. It says that the directory doesn't exist.
Here is the thing:
I was on JPY (rooted) and i flashed (voodoo lagfix) my phone sgs Kernel flasher (it worked before more than once). It restarted and then...nothing. It's stuck on that screen. I can't get in recovery mode nor download mode.
The phone is not even detected by the pc.
I already tried that trick which suggest to remove battery and reboot, but nothing.
Guys, Help, Please.
How about download mode? Can you access that?
Nope. I can't access download mode either.

OK i've take a look and i'm quite sure it won't work either. Why? because i noticed that even the battery icon doesn't show up when i put it in charge i just get that ajax loading icon (which freeze) and then nothing.
isn't that rather an internal sd trouble? That's my guess please let me know what you think.
Well, at the current stage you have two choice. Try the homemade jig or bring it back to Samsung for a refurbished unit. Pick one.

try to see if your phone is connected with fx: c:\androidsdk\tools\adb devices
if so then type c:\androidsdk\tools\adb reboot recovery

Well, the problem is mainly b/c I can't get into download mode. I can get ODIN to recognize the system, but the problem is that the system isn't in download mode and that it gets stuck on File Analysis. I've tried at least 30 times pulling out the battery, and pressing vol, plugging in the cord and battery and it keeps on going to the battery screen. :S
Getting into dl mode
open odin
Bat,sim, ext sd out
Bat back in
Vol up and down while plugging in usb
android with shovel
Click start in odin
Can you confirm you did this

Lol, what is ADB. Sorry I'm a noob. :/
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
Its part of the android sdk. So if you don't already have the android sdk download that and installed it. Then locate the android sdk folded in programs. Once you located in there look for a folded called "tools" that's where adb located. What I do to make easier to do adb commands is I copy the "tools" folded to the root of my hard drive. Then to do the commands listed above open cmd then type cd c:\tools\ then you can type in the adb commands
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
@ Above
It says that ADB has moved.... in the tools folder
When I move the folder to the C root, i typed in C:\tools\ and it said that it wasn't recognized as a command
Check inside the tools folder make sure something called "adb.exe" is in there, that's the adb
Also after you typed cd c:\tools\
did you hit the ENTER key and then the adb command. Or did you do it in one go i.e "cd c\tools\ adb reboot download"
Cause you want to do it the first way I mentioned

Heh. I thought reflashing from gingerclone would be a cinch cause I flashed to gingerclone with no prior knowledge in like 20 minutes. Then I messed up the installation and somehow the files on the captivate ( i noticed this but ignored it) were still there somehow on even after flashing/deleteing stuff on one click odin. Like it was eclair again and everything was gone according to the phone and you could only see the files while mounted. I went through the normal process and then I guess somehow it wasn't stock Odin b/c of the leftover files and it simply froze when I used clockwork to flash. Actually it didn't flash correctly the first time (it failed) and I was in too much of a rush to heed it as a warning. Thus bricking my phone.
Moral - Don't rush and ignore tell tale signs of problems. :S
Did you go to radio shack
I've searched all over the internet and found nothing but old, unhelpful articles. I currently can't get into download mode through any of the button and cord methods, so I've resorted to adb. However, my computer keeps saying error: device not found. I have the drivers installed, I've uninstalled and re-installed multiple times. usb debugging is on, usb storage is off. I've tried all ports. Nothing. Any ideas? My computer is a mac running windows 7 through boot camp, and am currently on boot camp
Update: Fixed through a program called PDAnet. If anyone has same issue, search for that and follow the instructions
Update Update: ADB is working, but reboot download just brings me to the powered off charging screen. Battery and cable download methods still don't work
Any ideas? bump

What do you mean? I want to try and save that as a final resort. I don't see why I would need one though. The system isn't broken, the rom boots fine, I can get into recovery mode and flash other things. I'm not bricked except for the fact download mode seems impossible to get into

I can get into both, I have both downloaded. I can't remember doing anything that changed this. I had issues with a cm7 kernel before so I successfully booted into download mode and flashed stock. That was only last thursday. I don't understand. It's most likely the computer?
So you're on stock?
No. I'm currently on MIUI but in recovery mode I can flash cm7 and miui
In miui you cant use software to boot dl mode. I'm guessing the flash to stock broke the button combo so a jig is the only way.
Are you sure? I've flashed stock multiple times. But never on this computer with windows 7. I just upgraded it to 7 and I've never been able to. As I said before though, adb is working

Here you go, 64 bit win7 drivers
http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
I had x64 drivers. I remember in one article that a guy said not to use setup but something else?
I don't know about that. I do remember I had to pick the.exe file (next to last), right click and run as administrator.
Yeah that's the setup.exe
Right click and run as admin. Should start installing.if it says you already have then installed, reinstall anyway.
sorry ive already tried that multiple times
Last thing I know to try its to download kies, full version not mini.
Go to the samsung website, change location from usa to united kingdom and dl from there. Once kies is installed, under the Tools tab is an option to install drivers. Try installing those to see if they will work.
Nope. Even tried on a friends win 7 laptop and same issue. ADB works and it's recognized but no methods work for download mode
Looking to root/new rom girlfriend's old phone, can't get it into recovery/boot menu.
I'm aware that the method is meant to be volume up, home button, power. I've watched videos of people doing it and read guides, pretty certain I'm doing it right.
I've done it keeping them held down the whole time (until Samsung galaxy screen cycles) and also releasing the buttons as soon as something comes up on the screen (as the youtube videos I've watched seem to do).
Have rooted my own phone and flashed several roms, so I'm moderately aware on this whole situation.
Running stock rom, I think Optus. Firmware 2.1-update1. So I think I need to update before rooting.
Download mode doesn't work either (volume down).
I also can't get it to appear on computer. Samsung Kies detects that the phone is plugged in but just keeps trying to initialise. I have downloaded Samsung Galaxy S x64 drivers from softpedia, tried to install driver that you can download as part of Android SDK. And hence, I have tried Android SDK but it isn't seen when I run 'adb devices'.
I set the USB mode on the phone accordingly. There actually was one point when the volumes were picked up on the computer, with USB mode as mass storage and debugging off, but it never happened again.
I've used two different usb cables, micro usb from Nook, new HTC cable.
Hope I've put through all the right information, really appreciate any help, this is getting frustrating.

thanks for the reply. The USB mounting is now working on another computer, the drivers must be confused on my desktop.
Surely micro USB cables are mostly electronically identical?

Reckon the boot to recovery command from Android SDK is my best bet?

Ok, I will have a Samsung cord later. If Android SDK stuff doesn't work I'll take a look at the tools you linked. Nice collection.

i had the same problem as you! but i had 3bottons combo working, so i entered recovery and it was a new cwm(5.x.x.x) wiped data/factory reset and cache, flashed cm7 againg and then it worked. here on the forum there was a guide to get the 3 bottons combo work but i cannot find it anymore. I hope jig will help you, also if you want CM7 ask to someone more experienced then me to buil odin file for it! so you can flash it with jig!
ok I have the usb jig working. I'm pretty sure that I do have CWM installed, I just can't get into recovery mode, only download mode.
I'm a bit unsure where to go from here. I think it's Odin, but I don't know what version to use. I want to use the most up to date method possible, that's why I'm trying to use the established Cyanogen Mod guide, but now that I'm using a workaround it doesn't apply to me I guess.
I'm going to be trying to get the right version of Odin and find a guide for it (probably from your tools xsenman, thanks) but if anyone would like to tell me precisely what I should do I would appreciate the peace of mind

Can I use Heimdall to boot my phone into recovery mode?
EDIT:
Pretty sure I can't do that now. I've had a look through the heimdall commands now (ie read the help text from the command line). So far I'm looking for something that I can use with the flash command, to either get me back running factory, or allowing me to get into recovery mode.

yeah but... the links inside. I'm not game to just try to download files that I think are the same
now something seems to have broken the tenuous driver situation I had going on. I got the files for EzOdin in your guides, but it doesn't pick up the phone. Neither does heimdall, even though it used to
alright, I'm done!
In the end, here were my problems:
Flashing Clockwork Mod 'bricked' the phone putting it into a boot loop. This was because I was meant to be on 2.3, but I was on 2.1 (I think).
I couldn't easily escape boot loop, because this version of the Galaxy S didn't have the 3 button method to enter recovery or download mode. This is somewhat common, especially in Australia from what I've seen. I had to enter into download mode by using the usb jig where you connect a 301k ohm resistor between pins 4 and 5 of the usb port.
It took me a loooong time to progress from here, but I think the main cause of this was usb drivers. I think for most people it will be plug and play though. The thing that got me there in the end was the right combination of uninstalling, and using the driver tool with the Heimdall suite.
I ended up having to install another rom via another method, to give me access to recovery mode, so that I could then install CM 9.1. I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792, and had to get the files from ,https://www.dropbox.com/s/d382m2kyorzum16/ezbase recovery kit gb.zip (hopefully that's still up for future readers)
Then from download mode again, I had to redo the kernel flash using Heimdall, as described http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide.
I had problems here where I thought I was on clockwork mod but wasn't, and hence the packages were read as invalid (I guess it was expecting a Samsung/Optus one). But with that kernel flash, now that I was [*actually*] on Clockwork Mod, the Cyanogen Mod zip was recognised properly and it installed
Hope this helps future readers, and thanks for the help.
