Hello,
I downloaded the CM7 nightly and flashed i ton my phone, everything seems to be great except the camera is kind of lacking. I wanted to check if it was a problem with the rom so I went to restore to a stock odin backup, but it would not restore. No big deal, so I went to flash Cognition and there was an error because the current version of Clockwork apparently did away with the old version of making update.zips which Cognition used. I also read somewhere that I can't restore any non gingerbread roms. So, I decided to install an older version of clockwork, but rom manager says it does not support Captivate (MTD) currently.
Eventually, I found that Serendipity VII is gingerbread so I flashed that. Clockwork said it worked but my phone just booted CM7 again. The website says I need to flash to a Samsung based rom before flashing serendipity, which is doable but I will probably want to restore CM7 so it is a pain.
So basically, is there a way to get clockwork to restore both CM7 and samsung based roms? Also, what does Captivate (MTD) mean in rom manager? Is that a special version of Clockwork for CM7 or something?
Thanks

I currently have ClockworkMod 2.5 and am trying to upgrade to 3 to install CM&. I currently have Doc's ROM, if that makes any difference.
ROM Manager doesn't give me any options to update to v3.
The CM7 wiki has steps to update for non-rooted users, but I don't think I need to do that.
I am looking for a CWM download to install via Odin. Is this the simplest method?
I've searched this forum as well as the web, and I can't find anything related to the Vibrant.
Any tips would be appreciated...
Do you know that Vibrant has its special sub-forum?
Edit: Yours is Bell's Vibrant. Never mind then. Just flash speedmod kernel.
That's it... Flash a kernel that it has cwm... Isn't depending of the rom.

Have you tried using ROM Manager and selecting Flash Clockwork Recovery?
For me it asked me what phone I was using (select Galaxy S MTD if you want to use CM7) and then asked what version of CMW I wanted. Just choose CWM3.x there and you should be fine. It will tell you that your current phone isn't supported, blah blah, but ignore it.
I'm sure he's going to install CM7, not already installed. Just use speedmod kernel. There's no need for CWM 3. If you got CM7 installed, it's automatically CWM 3.

Actually it is not completely automatic, you still need to flash a CWM3 recovery from inside ROM Manager, otherwise you can't see CM7 Nightlies from ROM Manager.
Thanks all.
I was able to get CM7 on my Bell Galaxy S.
I did try the ROM Manager but I couldn't get it to update CWM. It would try to install from Android recovery 3e, not CWM.
After many loops of stock 2.3.3, Doc's ROM 2.2.1, CM7 Nightly 15, and other steps, I was able to manually flash the nightly 18 using CWM.
For some reason, the update method for stock mentioned on the CM7 Galaxy S didn't work for me. Even after flashing speedmod kernel, I still came up with CWM 2.5.
Also, even with CWM 2.5, I was able to flash nightly build 18. Hope this helps someone else trying to update CWM.
galaxy s i9000 - had froyo 2.2 installed + cwm 2.5.1.2 all working well, made nandroid backup etc. Flashed it then with darkys rom 10.1 extreme all worked well, so decided to make a nandroid backup of that rom, but when i boot into cwm all i get is a pixellated screen full of multi colours no menu visible. Is it possible to re-install cwm so i can see the menu if so any suggestions welcomed, or failing that a way of installing a previous rom with odin, again suggestions plz, is new to the samsung galaxy having come from htc hero be gentle.
sounds like you might be on a gingerbread rom but still on froyo bootloaders?
Did you flash Ficeto_JHV_Odin with odin/heimdall first? As in this guide? If so, you should have the gingerbread bootloaders. Then I'd try repeating the whole process again. If you only flashed darky from CWM, you don't have the correct bootloaders and you should follow the guide I have mentioned earlier.
I installed ROM manager and flashed clockworkmod recovery but when I hit reboot into recovery it goes into the normal android recovery screen. I also tried doing a backup of my old rom but it just reboots into stock recovery screen and doesn't actually do the backup. I tried installing ROM from SD, same thing. I've tried different recovery versions (2.5.1.1, 2.5.1.2) but they all do the same thing. I'm rooted and it has superuser permissions, so that's not the problem. I have ROM manager premium. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling ROM manager. Please help.
Try installing it through stock recovery. (reinstall pakages)
What firmware you using?
rom manager is only good for eclair and froyo
there isnt a correct update.zip for the captivate on gingerbread.
if on gingerbread flash a kernel with CWM (clockwork) built in.
if on froyo/eclair you must select *reinstall package* from android recovery TWO TIMES in a row!
except FROYO has recovery3e also.....it will not allow unsigned update.zip files.
Ok. I'm on Froyo 2.2. Stock firmware. Trying to get either Fasty II or Cyan. First time doing all this. All this started with the GPS problem... (I know, I know. There's a thread for that.) Plus, I am interested in other ROMs. Just praying I don't kill my phone in the process.
you need to look at Odin/heimdall a CWM kernel, or fixing your recovery 3e to accept unsigned zips
^That. Fasty II needs Gingerbread bootloaders
OK. Well, really, I think I'd like to go Gingerbread. I dunno. There's too many to choose from. I want to get CWM working first. Where's the forum to install manually? There's so many places to look...
If you are going to GB flash a leaked stock first that contains boot loaders. Does your phone take well to 1 clicks?
Augh! I used Odin to flash the kernel. I had a temporary success. I had cwm up and it backed up my old rom. I rebooted twice into cwm. Third time, it reverted back to old android recovery. Like I said... Augh!

Flashed it again. Got CWM back up. Now, moving on to figuring out getting gingerbread. Any tips here are greatly appreciated as long as they make sense.
Also, what is 1 clicks?
Odin 1 click that will flash a leaked stock rom like 2.3.3 KF1 or 2.3.4 KH3 or 2.3.5 KI2. If they include Bootloaders you can just flash a cwm kernel and ready to flash any rom you like.
I have a Samsung Captivate, and keep seeing people talk about CF-Root(I believe it's a program that roots so correct me if I'm wrong). I rooted my Samsung Captivate using Superoneclick. I want to flash Onecosmic's ICS rom for the Samsung Captivate, but people keep mentioning CF-Root. Do I have to unroot, and then re root using CF-Root? Or Since I now have CWM on Android 2.2(rooted stock) can I simply flash CM7, and then flash One Cosmic's Rc3.1 rom. Also can I flash CM7 from Android 2.2, or do I have to down date android back to eclair and then flash CM7. Thank everyone so much, and please help me move this to the correct area if it has already been made before. I searched on XDA and found nothing about "rooting different methods". Thanks again.
Rooted is rooted. If you have cwm then it doesn't matter what os you're on, in fact if you would have just flashed a custom kernel with Odin that has cwm compiled into it you wouldn't even need to root to flash a ROM.

Like Studacris said, root is root. You can also flash CM7 from Froyo. HOWEVER, if you don't already have CWM recovery (which is not the same as being rooted, and I suspect you don't actually have), you won't be able to flash CM7 from where you are now.
If you actually have CWM, you can just flash CM7 from 2.2. If you don't, follow the instructions here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
to get CM7 and go from there.
Studacris is right, flashing a kernel (any kernel) with CWM from Odin or Heimdall is the easiest way to go, and then use that kernel's CWM to flash from there. Because of Froyo's 3e recovery, rooting it doesn't gain you much in the way of flashing ROMs because the stock recovery isn't going to let you flash anything anyway, rooted or not.
I am rooted, and I actually do have CWM installed( 3 button combo works), but do I need to install CWM the way it says, or is using rom manager to do it ok?. I've rooted 3 inspires and have put the Revolution HD Rom on them. Just didn't want to mess up this Samsung. Thanks for the helpful comments.
ROM manager does more harm than good. Just get cwm and your golden. (by update.zip or kernel with it baked in. 3e recovery won't use update.zip)

This is what I was trying to explain. Just because you can get to the recovery console does not mean you have clockworkmod, unfortunately.
You have to install it the way the directions say to. You can try using ROM Manager, but it won't work on 2.2. You will get a signature verification error and it will stop. You can try it if you want, you won't mess anything up, it just won't work.
If you really think you already have it, reboot into recovery. If you have it, it will say "ClockworkMod Recovery Version x.x.xxx" across the top. If it does, just flash CM7 from there with the "Install Zip From SD" option. If it says "Samsung 3e Recovery" and doesn't have that option, you don't have CWM and you won't be able to flash anything from there, including a CWM installer.
As far as ROM Manager is concerned, I would recommend steering clear of it in general. It worked well in 2.1 but you can't use it to install CWM in anything since then and you tend to get odd behavior with it when using it to do anything else. Follow the ClockworkMod directions, I have used them several times with no issues.
Thanks apbthe3, you were 100% correct. I see that I have to flash a new kernel with CWM built in, thanks. I thought that it looked differennt than the CWM ON MY INSPIRE so I checked and it didn't load up CWM. Thanks again.

Ive been digging through threads for 2 days and I cannot figure out why I cannot get into clockworkmod recovery. Im trying to flash for the first time (ICSSGS RC4), but cant get past the first step.
i896 running stock 2.3.3, rooted
Installed ROM manager from market
flashed clockworkmod (i9000 is the closest match to my phone from the list), twice.
accepted superuser permission
rebooted into recovery, but keep getting stock recovery menu.
What am I doing wrong? is it because I cant choose i896 in ROM manager when I flash clockworkmod?
Rom manager hasent supported captivate since 2.1, that is why ever since we build cwm into custom kernels.
read the sticky in the Q&A section entitled how to flash custom roms from stock (including gingerbread)
I wrote it months ago. it is stickied at the top of the page for a reason. to be easy to find.
Thanks, that explains everything.
