Replacement caps for the external antenna port?

Hi,
This is by far the most hi-tech question on the board... ;-)
I've lost the stupid little rubber cap that used to cover the antenna port. Cingular and Siemens are unable/unwilling to assist. Has anybody found an alternate source for replacements?

You the same exact thing happen to me. I ended up taking it from the non working display model at the sprint store. But then I lost it again. So if anybody knows, please let me know

Try using the plastic bit on the non-writing end of a Bic stick ballpoint pen; it's about the right size & shape.

i-mate said they'd replace mine. Maybe I can get a few extras, too.

DIY Fixing dodgy headphone socket

Hey guys,
I think some of us have a problem with our headphone sockets where over time, slight bumps to the connection causes the audio to slightly cut out which can be annoying if you're listening to music with your phone in your pocket through headphones/earphones.
Now I've found a guide to disassemble the phone which i'll leave at the bottom as not to ruin the continuity, but I'm struggling to find a suitable replacement part for the output socket on the phone. You have to remember that the socket also needs metal contacts inside it for the microphone input. I plan to shoot motorola's technical team an email about it but I'm wondering if there are any other people keen on fixing the problem or if they themselves have tried addressing it.

I've had to send my phone in twice because of this.
Might have this problem fixed now though as i've gotten angled headphones that are really close to the socket. This way there won't be as much pressure on the socket when i've got the phone in my pocket whilst cycling.

hmm... been a long time since I´ve tinkered with any jack-sockets (last time on one of my bass guitars), but shouldn´t you just be able to -probably more of a temporary fix- bend the contact-latches inside the socket a bit so they press "harder" against the headphone jack when it is plugged in?
that way, they should allow for more movement of the jack (which is the problem you are describing) without losing contact.
the only problem is, repeated usage of the socket will eventually wear the contact latches out again over time...

Through the course of my research I've actually found a really simple and easy quick fix which works really well.
Spray a bit of WD40 into the socket and abrakadabra! it works!

Really? Why does this work? Does the WD40 conduct the signal? How often do you need to do this?

Bad idea. Don't use WD40. It will eat away at the plastic and circuit board. It also will attract dust and dirt. Electrical contact cleaner is a better idea. It's safe for circuit boards and plastics.

Where do we get this stuff? My current milestone is fine...but for how long? My first unit's headphone jack was very bad after a few months.

Any hardware or electronics store should have it; Radio Shack, Walmart, etc.

In China, that part (original) is about 2RMB - say $0.30 US - but shipping it will cost far more than that...
The Motorola P/N is 0976622A01, and googling it seems to produce a few hits:

Have you tried the electrical contact cleaner post yet? Someone says WD-40 works (Which is a terrible idea, hence trying electrical contact cleaner). They aren't cheap and it's worth a shot before taking your phone apart!

this may work, but I have found on the portable devices it is normally more the circuit board it is connected to. The solder joint fails and really needs to be re-soldered. The connection is only supported by the solder, not a good thing, but all the electronics manufacturers only care if they last past the initial warranty. Often all it needs is a hit with a low power solder gun to re-flow the joint, other times you need to clean off the old solder, and put on some new. the joint will often look fine to the naked eye, but if you look with magnification you will see the joint has cracks. A friend of mine is an electronics repair geek, and he can see it just by glancing. I need some magnification, funny thing is he wears glasses that are almost an inch thick, so it is more experience at looking at them.

Thanks for the links. My audio jack has been bad for some time and it is only a matter of time until the frustration will drive me to take the phone apart. It is better now I have some instructions for when that time comes
I tried contact cleaner which unfortunatly didn't have any effect. It 'feels' like a bad solder joint but obviously I can't tell for sure until it is apart.

[Q] Lost cover for USB port - need replacement - where to buy?

Hi there,
the cover for the USB port of my HTC Dream /T-Mobile G1 became loose. The little plastic cable that holds it to the phone ripped but I still had it - I planned to glue the cover back to that plastic cable thing.
Unfortunately I lost that cover now. I was searching the web (including ebay) for replacement but even if I bought a complete housing they'd come without that little plastic cable holding the USB cover.
Does anybody know where to get replacement? By the way I would like to know where to get good (high quality) tools for opening the housing without breaking it.

You would probably have to buy a broken phone and hope that the cover is still intact. While I managed to maintain that cover on mine, I did find it highly frustrating. Many people actually PREFERRED to rip it off. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to replace it, since that cover really is quite redundant. You won't hurt anything by not having it.

Yes, you're right somehow, it is redundant. It looks a little ugly, though. Maybe someone can still point a way to that cover

Replace USB PCB board?

I have a broken USB port and looking to open this up and replace, but haven't seen anything posted. I found this, so if this will work...the heating up bit I haven't' done before to remove a back cover, but if lieu of a repair not sure how useful the tablet is
Anyone replace this part before?

It looks like it's modular - probably pretty simple to fit.
But remember - the Tab is plastic welded shut and you need to heat it up to separate the halves.
Depending on whether Murphy's Law visit you a lot (as it does me), you might be better of sending it in for repairs.

I've read about many different ways of heating to open the tablet. A simple solution that worked well for me, was using a plain old steam iron, a single edge razor blade of the type used in box openers and an exacto knife. Be careful not to cut the LCD ribbon cable on the bottom edge of the tablet. It starts about 3" in from the Samson logo side of the tablet.

Thanks all! Yeah, I've opened up a few others before, but not one with heat. Using a place close by in the Raleigh area, they were willing to do it for $70 including the part...so well-worth it to me.

Worth the price is they do it right, seal it up again, guarantee the work...

So after 2 different repair shops and half a year later, I was able to get this replaced. The first place held it for a month waiting for the part and eventually said it was not going to come in (strange). I let it sit for a while and then hit up another repair store...they said they can get the part. Was read the riot act on the risk, etc...but it was worthless at this point, so why not. They were able to do and all appears fine.
However, I wanted to transfer some files in prep for maybe a newer ROM when I noticed the replacement port does not allow any data transfer. I have another T810, so I know its not the various cables I tried. So that part is a bummer, but at least it charges...not sure why data transfer does not work, but I'm taking it!

With little signal of 4g, wifi and no GPS, I opened my phone well to check some defect and I missed this piece, in my view seems to be the antennas, does anyone know where I can buy only this piece?

It's really not clear from the photos and the information you give exactly which part is missing
Are we talking about the cover plate? In the two pictures is one your phone, the other a picture from ifixit or somewhere?
Whatever is the case, my best guess is that AliExpress would be your easiest source. I just searched there and found thousands of f1 parts, albeit most were camera parts
Alternatively, if you lost a piece and don't know what it is, your best hope of getting it working again might be to take it to a phone repair shop and pay someone who knows what they're doing

That's the Motherboard Bracket - at least that's what it's called in teardowns of other phones I've taken apart (for battery replacement etc). It acts as a retaining cover, but also typically houses connections to battery, antenna etc

You could try finding someone with a broken phone interested in selling parts - eBay maybe?
A repair shop might be your best bet - remember that you might replace this and have the original problem come back - they could help
