.9.png's editing on Linux? - Android Themes

Yep. I'm on linux. Windows was just too slow. But now I'm trying to start theming again but I just can't figure a way to edit ant .9.png image files. On Windows I would use Xultimates D9PC but i don't believe that option is available on Linux. I would just use the draw9patch compiler provided in my SDK but i get an error stating that the "draw9patch.jar file cannot be found" ....tho I certainly see it is in there. I have of coarse Googled the problem, nut while it does seem to be a common issue, I have yet to read of it being resolved. I figure if anyone knows the answer, its the brilliant folks at XDA, so...LOL .....here I am!
(please say its possible, please say its possible, please say its possible......)

I am not familiar with the D9PC program, but have you tried to run it with WINE?

Ok, Thnx guys! (i love XDA)
Let me respond to u all at once. Ok, so sorry I wasn't as informative as possible.
First, I'm "'cd'-ing" to the draw9patch's dir, but I've also tried just moving the files over to my platform-tools folder.... I still get the same error: "draw9patch.jar cannot be found". Finally, even tho 'cd'ing to 'tools' folder should yeild the same result, I added it (tools) to my path and I still get the error message. Like I said, Google seems to agree that the issue is quite common .....who knows?
As for a virtual box? I've heard of it.... Just not sure Wut it is. Is that like booting an OS ROM 'flash'?
And as for "Wine", I just googled it and I'm thoroughly excited! That sounds perfect! I'd also heard of that but also wasn't sure what it was ...wait, is that a virtual box? O see I need to create a "mock" C drive to install to. Wut version of Wine should I use? On-line, its suggested to use an older version but the advice seems a little dated. I'm running 11.04 "Natty".
Hey Thnx guys! I really appreciate all the help.

Need mac adb help

I am trying to install the new Hero OS, and can gain adb mount, but when the file I want to upload is on my desktop, adb wont see it. I have also tried adding it to the tools folder of the sdk itself, and it still doesnt see it.
Can anyone help me out a bit? I have even tried writing the full path to the file, but i dont think i have that correct either. So far i have tried these:
adb push app_s /system/sd/app_s
"cannot stat "app_s": No such file or directory"
I also have tried various forms of this, but still get the above responce.
adb push C:\users\username\app_s /system/sd/app_s
Is this a problem with not see ing the file, or am i maybe trying to push it to a non-existant directory on my sd. I dunno, i have searched on here for anything adb, but when you search, nothing comes up.
I have been listening to the stupid htc jingle for over an hour simply trying to figure out how to push a file, so please help me keep my sanity..
you did install the SDK right?
http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r2/index.html
if so, you need to add it to your path or give the full path to where you installed it every time you execute the command
you're even not very smart, or completely lost.
lolz, i'm j/k
i'm a mac user too, pm me you ichat i'll help you out.
i looked at my PATH,
(/Users/tslate/Desktop/fastboot:Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools:
/Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools:/Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:
tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin)
and added the folder to the tools folder and the fastboot folder, but this still doesnt work for me. Still getting Cannot stat 'app_s': No such file or directory exists.
Any ideas?
need mac adb help
I dont understand but my thread was moved to general for some reason so here it is again.
I cannot make adb find local files to push to my g1. I can and do have adb mount though. My PATH is:
/Users/tslate/Desktop/fastboot:Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools:/Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools:/Users/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:/tslate/Desktop/SDK/tools/adb:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin
I have tried adding the local file to both the tools folder of the sdk itself, and to the "fastboot" folder mentioned in the PATH, but i get the following error:
cannot stat 'localfile': No such file or directory
Anyone have an idea?
It was moved to general, because it is a general android (poorly worded) question.
Please don't make duplicate threads.
I'm sorry, but I guess I didnt really know there was any other way to ask. I and prob many others here are trying to learn what you guys already seem to know. If I'm going to be called stupid, I would at least like to know the proper procedure is for asking.
I didn't see anyone call you stupid, except one person who said "you're even not very smart, or completely lost." but was just kidding.

Ok, so not stupid, but unable to write a question correctly. So what's the correct way for me to ask this? Im not trying to be a smartass, but when things like this happen, and people don't understand what they did to receive such treatment, it reflects poorly on the xda dev community, and makes it hard to appease the powers that be and get my question answered. So how can i reword the aforementioned poorly written question differently?
For that I point you to some threads, which are all stickied by the way.

I actually did do a search through both those adb threads, as well as a search through the general developer forum, which returns 0 results for the term "adb". My question isnt answered in either of those threads which are mostly windows based from what i have seen.
Since no one can really give me an answer on how to make the question better or more to the point so I dont get locked/moved/etc. I'm going to assume there isnt one.
Thanks to those that actually tried to help.

lol no problem .. just remember to edit the title with [SOLVED] so mods can clean up the forum a bit
I've tried this method and also in a Linux install (actual install) and it says "romname-signed created" but does it actually create a file like that or is it just saying that it's made the file a signed version? If it makes a new, signed file I can't find where it puts them.
....... Rookie mistake. I had my files inside a directory when I zipped them so it couldn't find them. Unzipped, moved, rezipped and signed. Now I'm waiting to see if it actually boots up!

New boot screen for mt3g...

About me:
I have a mytouch3g running cyanogenmod 5.0.7ds
I have a mac, so most (pretty much all) of the boot screen instructions won't work for me.
The questions I have:
How can I change the boot screens on my mt3g
I found a .png that is awesome and I want to make it my first boot screen, how can I differentiate which boot screen I am changing?
Is there a less complex way of changing a boot screen than have been described? like a simple flash from recovery or something?
search button = answers
That doesnt help. i've read all the post about it already and they are all for windows, linux and the g1. none of which I have.
...A little help
If you have the Android SDK installed on your Mac... (which you should already have done) Kick your phone into "Fastboot" (I.E. Power+Back Button) From your Mac... Open up CMD line, and follow the same instructions you found for windows. Its really no different. As, long as you have properly installed the SDK and USB Drivers on your Mac. Hope this helps.
Also...
Read this post for the instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467693
Okay... I've installed Android SDK, I followed the instructions in the Cyanogenmod Wiki, and on the Android SDK website, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to run the SDK. I have Eclipse classic installed, but i'm just utterly confused. Can someone give me a description of how it's supposed to look or what i'm supposed to do or how I can get it up and running. I really need help with this.

Easy fix to all this. Take your desired boot screen and place it on your sd card. DO NANDROID BACKUP. Use Root explorer and copy and paste that bootanimation.zip into system/media folder and then reboot. Thats all there is to it
EDIT: Oh im sorry. Just noticed you want the boot IMAGE not the Boot animation. Sorry
I asked this same question about two days ago but put it in the android themes section. So far every response i have gotten has not worked. I know how to flash the splash screen when i get the correct image file, but my problem has been finding a way to change a .png or.jpg image into a .rgb565 image file. Every topic on xda that tells you how to do this requires a .exe program which me and you both know we can't run on mac without paying 50+ dollars for an extra program. I continue to look but so far the only solution i have come up with is to borrow a friends windows computer to convert my pictures. Unfortunately i just moved to a new city and don't know anyone with a windows computer. best of luck to you.

Change Icon (signing .apk w/ubuntu)

Ok guys please help me. I am fairly new to linux so all of the commands and script dont click with me as it will in a few more months so please be thorough if you can.
I have been searching and trying different things for almost 3 days now and Im just going to ask for help before giving up.
For now im trying to get familiar with further hacking for modifying apk's and roms but I am having a terrible time getting the correct information on how to resign an apk to make it installable on an android phone.
In order to keep this simple lets assume this is what Im trying to do.
(im using ubuntu, and every tuturial I see is for win or mac. I have seen 1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3271434) for ubuntu but it seems that it either does not apply to me or is simply over my head at the time with my limited ubuntu knowlege).
Im wanting to take avp.apk and change the icon. I replace the ya.png with a properly sized png named ya.png. I then have tried both ways of either deleting the meta-inf file (do I need to do this?)
And then after that I am stuck. I have tried some different autosign and testsign and different tools but Im obvousially typing something wrong or just not getting something right because it simply does not work with me.
Can someone please help me or tell you what to do or point me to a youtube vid? I keep coming up with the same threads and videos at this point and none of them seem to apply to me (for win/mac).
It seems like what Im trying to do should be simple enough. So please show me what Im being dumb about.

Q: NOOB Friendly Instructions for Linux please?

Hi All,
Please can ANYONE just jot down step by step the instructions/route they took to install Linux as part of their dual / triple boot setup please...? I have tried to follow the posts, to no avail. The instructions that come with SmackMe2 or Kexec are brief by means... I've copied them to the \Boot partition, until it says no space... And hence my other posts, related about increasing Boot Partition, and the likes...
I've now ended up with a bricked Touchpad, TWICE!!! Last brick was so bad, had to re-partition it and everything... Meant I couldnt take it away on holiday as I planned.
So please, if you can... can you list the exact way to go about getting Ubuntu Linux 12.04 + Android, as well as WebOS installed please...
And do we really need all of: NSBoot / SmackMe2 / Kexec / MemBoot / others....??
Thanks, Lister

I know your a noob that's cool I was in that boat before. but I usually search before I come to a forum and ask questions because 9 out of 10 times this has been asked before. If you knew Linux can get on the touchpad then there's already posts about it. If you cant find it on the forum its simple as opening up your web browser and googling it.

Hi hovax615,
Thanks for your quick reply / help... I'm a noob when it comes to HP Touchpad Development, and the tweaks/tricks of the Touchpad world.. But not a noob when it comes to Computers / Android... as I work in IT, as a Support Technician for many years...
I've done my fair share of searching the forums, both here, and other boards and info on native Linux seems very thin on the ground. When I ask on here, get very little replies... And the threads that were created by the OP just list the files to download, with very little instruction on how to use them. I've tried to follow them best I can, and so far all what Ive tried do not work!! I've used MoBoot (or whatever its called), Kexec, NSBoot and SmackMe2, all to no avail....
Due to the storage restrictions of Touchpad, I've even swapped files around in the \Boot partition to allow for SmackMe2 to reside in its limited space. I've ran the programmes they suggest installs Linux, and it goes all through the motions, but nothing is visible or boots afterwards. I can multi-boot between WebOS and Android straight forward enough, but nothing seems to work with Linux...
Thanks for your suggestion on CHroot, and someone else suggested that in a previous thread... But from my understanding, isnt that an Emulated environment? It boots/runs from within either WebOS or Android?? From what I've seen on these forums, is that you can get Ubuntu 11 / 12 or even 13 to boot natively from its own partition via MoBoot or Kexec...
I dont like the looks of Ubuntu 13 ported to Touchpad based on its dark theme GUI, hence why I am trying to get Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 working...
So what I'm really after, is instructions to get Linux to install from a fresh WebOS install... Do I use SmackMe2 or NSBoot to install it?? And then do I load it with either MoBoot or Kexec?? I've only ever had it listed in Kexec loader once, and even then it didnt boot...
Any idea's on the above methods welcomed please... I'm trying with Ubuntu 12.10 with this file "TouchPadBuntuRootfs1210v2.tar.gz" which is around 600Mb large... and it installs, but nothing boots afterwards, other than WebOS or Android...
Many thanks, Lister

Hi hovax615,
I think I saw that one a while ago, but have over looked it since... It looks perfect, and seems fairly straight forward to run, and is exactly what I need...
One quick question, when it says root of Media, (media, refering to SD Card mounting). Do I...
\Media\ (place all files here just in the root)
or,
\Media\Internal\ (create a folder called, "Internal" at root level, and place all files within this folder?)
After that, it should be fairly straight forward, hopefully... and looks a lot better than other options, thank you...

Hi hovax615,
Forget the above/below question, I found out that all the files need to just go directly in the root of USB storage, and not require a (internal) folder on MEDIA partition.
Well all has gone reasonably well this time. I now have MoBoot with both WebOS and Ubuntu....
WebOS loads flawlessly... However Ubuntu loads the pre-boot kernel (all the writing.......) and then reboots to MoBoot loader.... I have re-ran the Kernel script, so I dont keep loosing chunks of 4GB storage... but still fails to boot Ubuntu (other than loader). Any idea's...???
Many thanks, Lister

Hi hovax615,
No need now, as I got it to fully install and boot up last night...
I'd just like to say a BIG THANKS to Hovax615, who has helped me to install Ubuntu onto the HP Touchpad... and for not giving up, and offering other way's to install it...
To anyone else wanting to install Ubuntu, and having problems... I suggest not using SmackMe2, Kexec or NSBoot as they do not work!! I'm sure they prolly do, but with no instructions included with those tools, and lack of feedback from anyone... I have given up on them!
The method that Hovax615 mentioned in his (code.google.com/) link works a treat, and is fairly easy to follow... My advice, DO read what it says on screen... The problem i had with the OS not loading was because I didnt read an obscure message that said press "1 or 0".... other than that, smooth as anything...
Only problem I have now, is that the graphic/screen is garbaged... Pretty sure its just drive related, so will wipe this build and install a new build, maybe even 13.04 (just dont like the black theme). And the WiFi commands dont work, only the first line does.... Other than that, very impressed with Ubuntu on Touchpad...
Thanks, Lister

Hi hovax615,
Oh right, sure go for it... Its actually really cool once you got it all installed (WebOS, Android and Ubuntu).... And I fully recomend you do it via the original link to you sent me (Code.Google.Com/xxxxxxx) rather than the CHroot method. From my understanding, CHroot is emulated and not native, and not only that, it looks more complicated...
The guide I followed was a breeze, so so simple.... Basically, the only bit that got me confused was the Media / Internal as Ive seen the MASS STORAGE part called Media before. But never seen it called Media / Internal and so thought you had to create a folder at the root of Media, called Internal... But you dont!!! Just dump all the files at the root of that folder... and then copy the commands.
When running the commands, look to see what it says on the screen... I ignored where it said "Press 1 if xyz happened, or Press 0 if xyz didnt happen"... and so pressing [Enter] caused it to fail, as it didnt really install. But if you read it, and press the right key, which I think was 0 followed by 1, then it all installs fine....
I have a problem with the graphics on Ubuntu, which could either be bad install (gonna try a re-install), or try the newer 13.04 (over 12.10 that I currently have).
But sure, if ya get stuck, let me know.... and thanks once again for pointing that link out, and for helping...
Lister

Yaaay, well done for getting Ubuntu installed... especially via SmackMe2!! Dont know why, but that didnt work at all for me?? Although I use using the older version of Ubuntu, whether that has anything to do with it??
Anyway, I'm not so keen on the new build (13.04) as I think the interface looks ugly on that build, I like the plain Ubuntu look/feel....
Yeah, I too am having problems with the WiFi on my older build too... I've typed in the commands to kick-start it, apparently... But even the commands don't work...
Gonna have another go at it tonight.... LOL

It shouldn't have had an effect using the older ones you just have to download the proper things
uImage.kexec" and the "kexec-<OSNAME>.tar along with moboot and whatever os your going to use on a clean install. Yeah I kind of was having a hard time navigating on 13.04 we'll both figure it out sooner or later about the WiFi situation.

Bottom right corner, blank space next to the OnBoard icon. Hit that, and it will ask which access point to connect to.
