I just flashed Cognition 4.4.9 and now I am stuck on the Cognition boot screen. I am unable to get into either recovery or download mode.
SuperOneClick still roots/unroots the phone, but Odin won't do anything (obviously without download mode)
Any ideas?

The best way to 'suck' on the Captivate is by literally inserting it into your mouth for 1-3 seconds but make sure you hold the volume up and power button while doing it that way you can get into download mode.
First off there is a Cognition Q&A stickied you shouldent have open a thread for this. Take out your battery take out your sim and SD plug your phone in to your computer, press Vol +- and insert battery. If that doesn't get you in to download mode then get yourself a Jig

I realize there is a Q&A form which I did read though. However as I am sure you are aware before you jerk out on people that there are often numerous ways people have fixed their phones. I was hoping to find one of those said ways. I apologize that I offended you.

Now I probably jumped ahead and did something I shouldn't have, but I put JI6
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
onto my o2 SGS. I've still to root & remove the AT&T bloat, but for the most part, it works. However the home button doesn't seem to do anything, plugging in my USB cable reboots the phone and my network connection seems to come and go a lot. Not sure if this is just o2 having a bad day or if it's the phone however.
Has anyone else tried this yet?
I think I'll go back to JPK or an Eclair build, despite everything else being lovely, these little bugs make the phone a bit unstable for daily use. Unless anyone can suggest fixes for the home button, network issues & data cable?
1. Wrong section.
2. Let me guess, u don't have 3button method for getting into download/recovery working ?
on the Captivate the 3 button combos are:
Stock Recovery: Volume up and down and power. Release the power after the first screen shows
Download: Volume up and down, insert usb.
Sorry what section should this have been in?
Hmm yes the 3 button combo is gone, tbh, I hadn't tried that yet, was more just looking at day to day stuff. But yeah I guess if I'm going to flash this to something else I'll have problems as I cannot get back to recovery and the phone shuts down every time I plug in the USB cable...
Ok. Played with it a bit. Seems things are more serious than I thought. I cannot make calls. So I need to get back to a UK ROM. But since the phone shuts down when I connect the cable I cannot use KIES/ODIN on it. And I cannot get into Recovery as the 3 button combo (and vol up/down) don't work.
Suggestions?

No dude, phone is fine. There are a bunch of post on this very issue, and there are several methods on getting it back to d/l mode to restart it. I personaly remove the battery and take sim out and leave it out. Then I open odin, put battery back in, and hold down the volume up and down plug in usb and hit the power button. There are stickys to it also I believe.
Pulling the sim was the trick. I looked around and couldn't find that...when you're panicked, it's easy to look past the important info...
Thanks, I'm doing the one-click right now.
gl with it, happens to me sometimes several times odin stops or something and have to restart it.

Thanks!!! You saved my day. This kind of info should be posted everywhere on this forum with big capital letters. Most of the things about bricks involve disappointment, frustration, complicated or intensive workarounds and of course tons of guys telling you that your phone is bricked and you can't do anything about it. Again thank you.
This stuff is posted everywhere.

Alright so I'm working on my friends captivate and we are unable to get it into recovery or download mode. I would really like to get it into download mode but I can not figure it out. I have done every button combo I can think of and everything that worked when I had my captivate. Does anyone know of a way to manually force the phone into download mode? ADB will not work as the phone is stuck on the boot screen. Button combo will not work (as far as I know) because I've tried many many times to do it. Ive been searching this subject for a few days now to no avail. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!
this is the wrong thread for this
But try take out battery for a min the put battery back in leave phone off hold vol up and down buttens plug in usb cable have it plug into your pc and plug it into your phone while holding vol up and down
try removing the battery putting it back in, hold vol down and plug in a usb cable (mae sure its connected to a machine). if vol down doesn't work try vol up, or both. remove the battery on each attempt
First, this belongs in Q&A, not Development.
Second, this is what I would try: Pull the battery, wait 2-3 minutes, reinsert battery, plug in jig(you do have a jig, right?). This should put you in DL mode.
Firstly I apologize for this being in the wrong thread. I read through a similar question in the Q&A thread and he was told to put the question here.... thats why I figured I'd post here.. Mod please move this to the correct forum if you see this.
I have tried all button combos. I am so at a loss. I never ran into this on my cappy. Does anyone Knievel of a way into download mode without button combos? I've done volume down USB battery in, up USB battery in, both USB battery in, USB up power battery, and many many.many many.more. I always would take the battery out hold down.up down and power plug in USB and the put battery in.

Who said I was flashing roms? Thanks for assuming. =) Apologies but I've never come close to bricking a phone before with the hundreds of roms I've flashed. I've never needed to resort to a jig so I haven't had experience with such witchcraft.;-) As I had said before I never experienced this with my captivate. I'm just super lost and I'm not trying to flash a Rom, I'm trying to help a friend get his phone working.

That video did the trick. Made a stop by Radio Shack and for $1.07 got my friends phone in download mode. FINALLY. Thank for all y'alls help and suggestions
Im a little late to the party....but if this ever happens to anyone again...try this. THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER BUTTON COMBO!!! I thought cappy was DONE as i tried all different dl mode methods and it didnt work. This one did however.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
I had cynogenmod ROM installed and then did some unlocking to run it on non ATT network. But somehow while trying to install another nightly, something went wrong and I was not able to see the last message on screen.
Now my phone is bricked. I only see 'ATT Logo' screen and it never goes further than that.. I have tried to put it into download mode but it does not seem to be going in that mode.
Is there any hope for me or I have an expensive paperweight now?
Anyhelp will be greatly appreciated.
If you can see something, you don't have a true brick.
Try pulling the battery, put it back in, hold vol up and volume down, and out on your usb cord. If that doesn't work, try booting up while holding vol down and power.
If that still doesn't work, you may need to get a jig.
Edt: post above answered it

A jig is a uhh, gadget for lack of a better word. That plugs into your phone's microusb slot and automatically puts it into download mode. If you google samsung captivate download mode jig. Or just captivate jig. You should find one. They run at about 8-10 dollars I believe. Much cheaper than replacing your phone.
All hope is lost, all your base are belong to us.
Just so we know what is happening, could you describe (step by step) what you're attempting to get to download mode?
Don't you have to have sim card and ext. sd.card out to get in dl? (i say as a question because I've never tried without doing that)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I know you weren't flashing different bootloaders, but trying different button combos is always recommended.
1# volume up + volume down
2# volume down + power
3# volume down + home (softkey) + power

How To Enter Download Mode.
There are a number of ways to enter download mode, such as clicking "Enter Download Mode" in a compatible recovery, or clicking "Download Mode" in a long-press power button menu in your custom ROM. If you do not have access to those methods, the most surefire way I know of entering download mode is this:
1) If not already powered down, power down your phone.
2) Remove the back cover.
3) Remove the battery.
4) Plug your micro USB cable into your computer (Your computer should be on at this time.)
5) (This will take a little dexterity. Enlist help if it proves too difficult on your own.) Hold down both volume keys at the same time.
6) While still holding down the two volume keys, insert your micro usb cable into your phone.
7) While still holding down the two volume keys, insert the battery into your phone.
8) Your screen should now light up with a yellow digging Android that reads "Download Mode"
9) If you did not reach download mode, repeat steps 1 - 7 several times to rule out any user error.
10) If you still cannot enter download mode, remove your SD card and SIM card as well as your battery. Do not re-insert the SD or SIM card when you re-insert your battery in step 7.
11) If you still cannot enter download mode, remove your battery, SD, and SIM card. Wait 24hrs and try again.
12) If you still cannot enter download mode, your phone may require special care, such as a JIG or JTAG. Information on this can be found elsewhere on the XDA forums.
Alternate, similar method for entering Download Mode (thanks to Br1cK'd)
1) Power down your phone and remove the battery.
2) Re-insert the battery. (but do not turn on your phone)
3) Plug the micro USB cable into your computer.
4) Press and hold down both volume keys.
5) While still holding down both volume keys, plug the other end of the micro USB cable into your phone.
6) Your screen should now light up with a yellow digging Android that reads "Download Mode".
7) If you are still unable to get into download mode, follow steps 9 - 12 of the previous method.
If any of my information is incorrect, please let me know and I'll amend the OP to reflect the correct information.
I did not come up with any of this information on my own apart from searching for it in the first place. If you are one of the pioneers of these methods or files, you have my thanks. If your post or file is one of the ones I've linked to, you also have my thanks and gratitude.

I wrote this up after giving people a hard time in the Q&A forum when they asked for "Revert to stock" instructions. After a week or so of jabs and snide comments, I did a search myself, and it took a lot longer than I expected to find the relevant information. Sure, it only took 15 minutes, but I was expecting 15 seconds. Finding a downloadable JFD image was far more difficult than I expected, and a lot of the links to information were buried under a sea of similar links. So anyway, I waded through and collected the important ones relating to ODINing back to stock and placed them here.
The only thing I would say differently about entering download mode, that I personally find easier, is from a powered off state or after battery pull, reinsert the battery, hold the entire volume rocker down with your left thumb while holding the phone upright and facing you, its a natural way to hold it, and then plug in the usb cable.
Pops right into dl mode. I used to follow those same steps you posted, with the battery as the last step, but found keeping the battery in and plugging in the usb cable last was a ton easier.
Thanks though for making it concise, for the panicked users who continually fail at searching.
Edit - And I'm not throwing stones at the noobs, we've all had that "Aw ****" moment, yours truly included, and have panicked and lost the ability to rationally seek out the scattered bits that can solve our issues.

+1 ... it's very easy that way
Do these files work the T-mobile USA t959 Vibrant (Sims 3 and Avatar)? We have a different movinand chip (416mb bigger) and 3 extra partitions. If we flash we the stock JFD/PIT we tend to get the Multi CSC error.
Br1cK'd: Thanks for the info! I added it to the OP. Can't hurt to be extra thorough, right?
protohamster: No offense, but you're gonna have to take another stab at articulating your problem. I can't make heads or tails of what you're asking.

Very Nice Job on this... +++
None taken. I am asking if the PIT files and JFD odin files you posted can be used on the first T-mobile USA Vibrants sold in the USA, those phones came with pre-installed Sims 3 game and the full Avatar movie on the SDcard. But they are different in the following respects. They have a slightly larger movinand chip, 16.43GB instead of 16GB and their partition tables are also different (they have 4 partitions instead of 2). If you Odin the most common JFD and pit files found on this forum onto those phones they will work, but you end up getting a multi csc error when you boot into the 2e recovery.
Not sure how you can link to my files/guide and not say there is not a guide for returning to stock.

Hold down Volume Up, MENU, and Power
