Given Verizon and LG combo sloths for rolling out updates what's the chances of us seeing a 2.3 or god willing 2.4 by xmas
Sent from my VS910 4G using Tapatalk
I don't think there's a such thing as 2.4.

Its really hard to say, especially since the Revo isnt quite like LG's other android phones. I would almost bet 2.3 is coming at some point, rather it be now or when ice cream sandwich is history, but all i (personally) have to go on is with their dumb phones they were more than ok at providing updates and fixes, like the voyager and env touch. ANd if I had to guess, its gonna be later rather than sooner knowing gingerbread itself.
Working at Verizon for 6 years. LG was always good about updating software and fixing issues. Given that this isn't one of the flasgships like the Droid I can see Verizon being lazy on this as they have to pay for upgrades from manufacturer unless it is a fix.

I have heard rumors of "Ice Cream Sandwich" coming out for all devices (that name is absolutely absurd). Will we see that line of Android on our phone? pffft... I'll believe it when I see it.
As for the 2.3 roll out - I guess it's a possibility to happen "soon," but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yeah, android is gonna try and make all the phones/tablets on the same OS. Isn't gonna happen til late this year/next year. Just like iPhone pushes updates to all there phones, so its all on the same firmware. Android is going to start doing with ice cream sandwhich. (I too don't like the name)

2.4 is already out. The Xperia Arc from the gate had the release.
If we get 2.3.4 with the next release we are already behind the ball, but then again at this point any update would be nice welcome.

2.4 is not out, it may never come out. It's rumored that ICS will either be 2.4 or 4.0, but nobody can really predict the version number.
The Xperia Arc didn't ship with 2.4 - in fact, I'm not sure it has 2.3.4 - here's an article talking about the OTA update to 2.3.3 (meaning it shipped with 2.3.2 maximum):
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/27/sony-ericsson-boosts-xperia-arc-and-play-to-2-3-3-includes-face/
At this point in time, 2.3.4 is the latest Android release. See the left sidebar of this page: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Ok back to basics numerous phone already have run android 2.4 in development including phones that google showed/used during i/o
4.0 ice cream is not 2.4 and according to which manufacturer report you read its a decompiled version of 4.0 improvements or according to some 2.3.4 with additional background bug fixes. Either way continued evolution.

Gingerbread reply from LG
Dear David,
Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics.
LG would be more than happy to assist you.
Unfortunately, a release date has not been set for the 2.3 Gingerbread update for the LG Revolution as the update is still in testing with Google, Verizon and LG.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics.

I honestly don't want 2.3 pushed to my phone. If this happens I'll have to root it again and reinstall ROMs. Of which I personally don't want to do. The way I see it is the Devs making the ROMs for phones are making them "Gingerbread". Just my 2 cents.
A 2.2 bugfix update is for sure rolling out here shortly-- those of you rooted + clockwork installed shouldn't worry, the update shouldn't bother your device at all.
You can decline the update, or if you accidentally click "yes" to it, your phone will just reboot into clockwork and stop. You can then choose "Reboot" and you'll end up right back in Android without taking the OTA.
If you're reeeeeaaaly nice ( ) you'd grab the update file from your cache partition and post it here for me to dissect like a vulture (muhahah!)

This is a rooted ROM built from a properly signed, unreleased HTC Sense/Froyo OTA package. This MAY NOT be the final HTC/Verizon release of this build, so assume it is an early leak of an upcoming release until confirmed otherwise. The OTA does NOT contain a radio update, in case anyone was curious.
ROM Details:
Deodexed and zipaligned.
Includes all system components and full boot image.
Pre-rooted with Superuser 2.3.6.1.
Ramdisk modifications to disable ro.secure, enable adb on boot and support startup scripts in /system/etc/init.d.
Absolutely nothing removed.
Installation:
You must be rooted, have nand unlocked and be running a 2.x radio. Follow dadicus' guide for details on how to perform these steps.
Perform a nandroid backup of your current ROM, in case you change your mind or encounter issues.
Apply the zip via Clockwork Recovery. It has not been tested with any other recovery.
If you are coming from another completely stock ROM (i.e. Sense 2.1 or 2.2), you may not have to wipe data. I obviously recommend wiping data (since it will eliminate any possibly bad/stale configuration), but the update script will not do so automatically during installation. Use your best judgement to determine what works best for you.
Disclaimer
As with any modification (ROM, patch, etc), you run the risk of damaging your device. While unlikely, it is important to consider this possibility before proceeding. I take no responsibility for any such damage, data loss or otherwise.

It's not the new Sense, unfortunately. It looks like an incremental update for Froyo, probably to address bugs.

See above. I'm suspecting it's a maintenance release. It's really going to be up to us in the community to figure out what has changed until we hear something official.
I'm done with the the necessary changes. Just testing now. Should not be much longer.
Cool. it will be interesting to see what updates / modifications have been included. Thanks for making this happen!

I'll bite... installing now... give me a few
12/23/10- V6
- Easy root. You only need to install Superuser app from Market.
V5
- Wifi semi-working (tend to crash the phone on Wifi sleep timeout)
- Calls working but no DATA for me (coolya had data, which means: erratic) - voice not tested.
- kind of laggy, but there is a lot of headroom.
- GPS working only by Wifi/Triangulation networking - No satellites.
Fantastic job by coolya who did most of the advancement, for Wifi, baseband and also OneDRAM partitions configuration. Really really awesome work.
We were so lucky the snow forced him to stay at home instead of going to work
This time you can really start to play with the phone, install apps, surf on the Internet all this with Gingerbread! kind of cool
12/22/10- V4
-Buttons fixed thanks to the contributions of xcaliburhands, pawitp, fenfir*
-No need to create some directories manually anymore.
-Kernel available as ClockWorkMod recovery update.zip - be sure you have access to 3 buttons !
*I havent tested this beta so im assuming the buttons are remapped properly for only i9000 using that kernel he posted. but if i read on twitter correctly, all phones have proper keymapping, not sure.
12/19/10 - V3
- SDcard now works
- As internal storage
- As USB storage
12/19/10 - V2
improved pre-init script and mounts:
no more insufficient space
improved dual-boot solution
faster boot
faster disk I/O
12-18-10 - V1

checked the Nexus out and what I thought was correct. It seemed like a vibrant hopped up on 2.3 and the rest wasn't much different hardware-wise.... Now super-curio has proven this assumption to be correct
....congrats and excellent !!!
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it in the other thread,I don't feel like reading through 39 pages when its already almost midnight and I need to wake up at 7am,but as a temporary solution until we get buttons working,as long as they didnt change anything major in the filesystem, you should be able to change the keylayouts file to make vol up and down remapped to home and back (or menu,search,... whatever you want.) I haven't flashed this yet,so someone please let me know if this works. If I remember correctly keylayouts are in /usr/keylayout/ and there should be a few files in there, one of which is the hardware button mapping, open it in a text editor, there will be a bunch of buttons on the left and their names on the right, find vol up and change it to say HOME,find vol down and change it to BACK. save the file and reboot, that should make them work as what you assigned them to.

Well, I'll get to the point soon. still modifying the post. but basically the gist of it is to check ALL of motorola's update servers for updates, not just the one that comes programmed into the device. If we're lucky and we find a hidden update, we may be able to get an unlocked bootloader (or other goodies?), which will allow us to use our device as we please (new kernels, better mods, etc)
Thanks for writing this up, I've been hesitant to try it since some of the paths/files in other posts did not exist on the Bionic.

Just so everyone can see it: the update label will always be for the build ID that the zip is supposed to be installed over. That means if you've got an update:
Blur_Version.1.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip --> This means the zip should be installed over devices running Build number "1."
Blur_Version.5.5.886.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip --> This means the zip should be installed over devices running Build number "5.5.886."
Was anyone ballsy enough to attempt to install the update? It doesn't have a bootloader inside, but it may still be dangerous.
P3 flashed it and it does absolutely contain a bootloader update.
The critical pieces are the mbm.bin, mbmloader_hs.bin and mbmloader_ns.bin.
HS and NS refer to Hardware Secure and Non Secure parts and both are included in these updates because both types of hardware are present in the test groups or whomever is the intended recipient of these files.
There is not an unlock, per se, but both secured and unsecured mbmloaders are present and the updater script has a check for the ro.secure status and loads the appropriate file for the target device.
The D3 update and assumedly this file as well cannot be reverted to stock release version, so this file must be regarded very carefully and assessed before any decision to flash or not is made.
There is a LOT more discussion we need to have about these files and OMAP SoCs I think regarding the differences between them and the Tegra II SoCs and fuse arrays!
Edit: This breaks the djrbliss root method using the tcmd exploit. We need to look further and discuss with him other possibilities for root. Reverting has not been established yet and may brick since we dont have a complete XML.zip.
WARNING!!!! This is a very dangerous file to flash at this stage!!! Please do not rush into testing it yet!!!
Thanks to those who got the file and thanks to P3Droid for guinea pigging.

So I decided that I just couldn't sleep not knowing if the root patch had been fixed. So I decided to flash the update.zip. And what I expected to happen, happened, it zapped the local.prop exploit.
So here I sit on the new build unrooted and stock. I'm fairly certain that if I try to revert back to the OG build I will have a paper weight on my desk until a full xml fastboot file can be found. I would suggest you all wait and don't flash this yet.

I suppose I was looking for the wrong things. On other devices, "ap20bl.img" was responsible for bringing such goodies as an unlock capability.
Android police just announced that a 4.1.2 update has been released to AOSP, and the Nexus 7 is apparently already receiving it!
We're releasing Android 4.1.2 to AOSP today, which is a minor update
on top of 4.1.1.
As a note to maintainers of community builds running on Nexus 7: please update to 4.1.2 at the first opportunity. Future variants of the grouper hardware will have a minor change in one of the components (the power management chip) that will not be compatible with 4.1.1.
The build number is JZO54K, and the tag is android-4.1.2_r1.
Enjoy,
Conley and JBQ
--
Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru
Technical Lead, Android Open Source Project, Google.
Update #1: 4.1.2 has already started rolling out to the Nexus 7, though mine doesn't see it yet.
Update #2: Since I mentioned seeing 4.1.2 with this very build number in the server logs, I'll throw in the devices that I saw running it, in addition to the Nexus 7 (this doesn't mean the updates for them are out now, but rather a good indication of what's to come):
Are we ready?
JellyBean 4.1.2, the incremental follow up to 4.1.1 isn’t a major update by any means, but promises to improve performance, increase stability and fix certain bugs.
It also adds rotation ability to the homescreen, something that wasn’t possible in the previous version of the software.
Could someone please post a dump of this (or point me towards the easiest way to download it while running a custom ROM on my N7)? I'd like to hack away at pulling out the launcher and making an update.zip for it.
Hi everyone, I hope this update will fix the lag problem with few mb/gb free on my N7.
I dont want to flash the factory image cause it wipes everything.
If I flash a nexus 7 stock rooted odexed will I receive the update? What do u suggest?
Hopefully Google fixed the bad display calibration!

To be clear, What JBQ says in that post is that the source of 4.1.2 will be pushed today to the AOSP repo, he asks to the community maintainers of nexus 7 builds (such as CyanogenMod) to update the source ASAP. it does not mean that the Nexus 7 is receiving an OTA update now, I will soon I'm sure,
JBQ also said that the updated factory images will be available as soon as the OTA is, and that the change can be pulled from the commits in the repository..
That's all for now.
So I have my Nexus 7 rooted and unlocked running stock software, will I be fine to get the OTA?

Actually, there are many reports of Nexus 7 users getting the update so it is rolling out now. It also adds home screen rotation to the stock launcher.

I think you will get the update-notification at least..
The question is if a custom-recovery prevents updating.
edit: xda-user dalew729 says he uses CWM and updated OTA without problems....

Unfortunately, because I'm new i can't post links. If you check the other 4.1.2 thread, and follow the Android Police link, you'll see screenshots detailing this.

Yeap, that is what Im Looking now, no word about that from JBQ but there are those reports, No update for me yet.
Saw the 4.1.2 being reported on twitter. Has me all tingly, curious to see what else is included besides home screen rotation. Currently running Codename android rom so I have to wait. :fingers-crossed:

JBQ has nothing to do with the OTAs so he will not be announcing it.
I really can't wait to try this update out!
Unfortunately, I'm not getting any OTA updates. D:

Has anybody taken a look at the new official JB release that popped up at http://sbf.droid-developers.org/cdma_maserati/list.php ? (Although, I can't access it currently)
It's been mentioned on another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277830 ) regarding the ability to root, but it doesn't look like it's been looked at in any depth whether it includes any fixes, etc. The build date has changed to the 5th April, and the version is 9.8.20-72_VZW-18-2.
Cheers,
Steve.
This should probably be in q&a section... but yeah I wonder what is in it too... either way, I'm pretty happy sitting on eclipse 1.0.6 right now

You could be right regarding the location, apologies if people object - I just thought the ROM guys would probably be the ones most likely to be all over it.
File Mirror
FWIW - I found that droid-developers.org seemed a little hit and miss, so I've set up a private file mirror for this new release. If somebody wants access to it, then just PM me. I'm trying to sort out a public mirror too, and will update this post when/if I get that sorted out.
Cheers,
Steve,
I am uploading cdma_maserati/cdma_maserati_9.8.2O-72_VZW-18-2_1ff.xml.zip
to my http://d-h.st/users/sd_shadow/?fld_id=12041#files
via remote url upload, usually doesn't take very long, quite a bit faster than uploading from my pc
This same version upgrade for XT926 HD appeared and was said to be a bugfix for the 4.1.2 OTA and that another more significant update would appear shortly for all devices but still remain 4.1.2 and would include Isis.
So we should expect to see a couple of OTAs pushed out on accelerated schedule that will match this XML file and the subsequent update.

Nice one - I'm currently 66% of the way through uploading to FileDropper (which I've never used before, but it was free, and didn't require sign up).

So is the "more significant update" meant to be coming after this April 5th release?
Cheers,
Steve.
It's safe for now...

Yes, and I just flashed the boot, system and radio images from the MR2 XML and then rerooted using razr_blade.
So, we are safe to use this file to upgrade the firmware without any loss of root or any other issues.
The secure version did not increment so it is also possible to revert to the prior -18 release without risk of soft bricking.
This follows the pattern of the update for the HD and will likely be the same for the other devices that just recieved 4.1.2 in this cycle.
The next update is the one the will include ISIS and may also have security enhancements that will need to be carefully scrutinized.
That is conjecture on my part, at this stage, we don't know.
It would be nice to know what changes the release addresses. My hope is that it sorts out the hardware keyboard problem of unsticky shift keys in some applications.
Cheers,
Steve
