bricked help - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey, i am posting this for a friend who bricked his phone and doesn't know much about it..
he was running serendipity 7 which is a jvo rom, and tried flashing the pauldiddy remix theme, which says is only meant for jvp and jvq roms. i used a jig, to get the phone into download mode, and the computer detected it when i plugged in the usb. but when i tried to use odin one click to go back to stock, it would get stuck at the "Do not turn off target". im not sure if anyone knows a fix for this, or if i should try using the method from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310 instead, but i figured i would ask before i messed around with it too much
any feedback would be appreciated

how long do you wait before throwing in the towel? it does take a minute or two to finish it's task ? And are you opening Odin before you hook the usb to the phone ?

waited probably about 5-10 minutes. yeah i opened odin first, and it detected the phone and showed the Added! text

Just out of curiosity, what is the phone doing right now that you're trying to use Odin on it?
The reason I ask is that if you can get to CWM recovery, you might just be able to re-flash the rom (assuming it's a wipe package) and it would take care of the issue.

i cant get into recovery, but i can get into download (using the button combos). not sure if that means anything either

Well keep trying, and you might want to try the odin 1 click. I have a Cappy that got dipped in the pool, it would not go into recovery at all but I could get the download all the time, But it kept getting stuck at the i896 screen or the AT&T screen (odin 1 click) after 3 weeks of trying and having to wait 3 days for it to come out of it's coma it now works fine. If you try the odin 1 click it might work for you just make sure it's not ver 10.10 I think (look under battery). What screen does it go to once you press power IE: black screen rogers screen etc. ?

ive tried using odin 1 click.. like i said, the first time odin actually picked up the device, but it wouldnt get past the "do not turn target off" prompt. but i tried plugging it in again, and now it doesnt seem to even pickup the phone. when i when i try to boot the phone, its just a black screen. thanks for the input though

[Q] Odin stuck at file analysis, what to do?

Hey all,
I've had enough with this stock JI6 froyo, the lag has taken the best of me unfortunately, so i am trying to go back to JF6 so i can the go to cognition.
However, my odin (one click) doesn't seem to want to get past the File Analysis- it did once but got stuck on PIT.
I've Tried
1)Rebooting the computer
2) running odin as admin
3) Running odin in xp sp3 mode
4) steps 2 & 3 together
5) Took out sim card and sd card
6) tried different USB ports
I must have tried at least 15 times now to get this to work. Each try i do.
1) Make sure nothing is plugged in
2) then i plugg in just the usb cable (no phone attached)
3) open odin
4) put battery back in phone, plug into usb and hold vol up/down
5) i enter download mode and odin sees the phone
6) click start- stuck on file analysis
*EDIT* I can now always get it to say Set PIT file, yet it won't go past that.
*EDIT2* So i finally got it to go through, what i did was just constantly try it on one port (probably 20 times on a single usb port) Then, one time when it was stuck at set pit file, i unplugged the phone so the odin said failed (or reset i don't remember), then i closed odin, unplugged the usb from the computer and moved it to another port, then tried it again and it worked.
*EDIT3* Well damn, i guess i posted a little too soon. It's now stuck on Factoryfs.rfs, and the load bar on the phone itself has not moved at all
Sorry for the question =(
*EDIT4*So repeating edit 2, 3 times now, its gotten back to factoryfs.RFS again. This time the load bar on the android moved to about half way, yet it stopped again.
*EDIT5* After repeating step 4 a few times the progress bar got farther and farther teach time. And finally odin says reset (in blue) and the phone is booting up =)
Thanks for any help you can give =)
I think you need to get a new cable, use a different computer, reinstall drivers, heck anything, you seem extremely unlucky.
how helpful.
same problem here.
IIRC, I was stuck at file analysis my first time. I then selected the repartition option in ODIN and it just flew through the process. I'm guessing the lagfix was getting in the way. Telling ODIN to basically reformat and not try to save the existing structure was the right thing to do.
What I do is power off, wait for battery to come on( plugged in) and turn on with holding volume buttons to get to download mode. Its the only way mine will complete the process
ANDROMEDA 2.0,1.2ghz and some kernel i can think of. (this is probably all wrong because i will change it in 45 minutes or so)

Lol well you're not in big trouble if it is indeed going into Download mode. Let's start from scratch.
Unplug your phone from your computer, remove the battery, and close Odin One Click.
Now, open Odin One Click on your computer.
Put the battery back into your phone and power on the phone (wait for it to go to Download mode, assuming that it does that automatically now).
Wait a few seconds for all the communications on the phone to start running (five seconds is more than enough, but better safe than sorry).
Plug the phone into the computer and wait another ten seconds (if you press Start too quickly, it will freeze before it finishes and you will indeed brick your phone).
Now press Start.
All should be good from there on

i have tried that multiple times and it just stays on DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!! ive left it plugged it for an hour now and theres still no communication it seems like. although i was able to flash a kernal with odin 3 and it allows me to get into recovery, but it will not let me flash a ROM. it goes through everything but at the end it says cant mount system. i have a funny feeling that im screwed with this phone haha any more help would be awesome tho
Have you used Odin before? Which Odin are you using? What build is your phone?
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium App
Are you trying to go back to stock? If so are you using this Odin? http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
thank you all for your help but i figured out this morning and flashed to cyanogenmods gingerbread ROM. i still have no idea how i fixed it tho haha anyways thank you all for suggestions!

i9000 bricked, but goes to download mode - rescuable?

So here't the full background, it's not long, please read:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-bricked-my-sgs-wonder-what-i-did-wrong.2032/
Long story short, it looks like I bricked my SGS when trying to flash with Odin, even though I followed the tutorial very closely. When I power up the phone, it just gives me the image with phone, exclamation mark and PC on it. It does, however, go into download mode when powered up with VolDown and center button.
How do I save it? Do I need the JIG (God, please say no! )
Have you tried reflashing with odin.
Jig is only needed when you cant get into download mode.
Also i just looked inside the darky rom topic.
Have you flashed the jvk rom first with the bootloaders?
Edit: as said below. If you gonna reflash, flash a stock rom. Not the darky rom. First priority is to make your phone work.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, you have download mode.
Now, fire up Odin and load a few rom files into it, connect the phone and see if the PC still recognises it. (Do not flash, Just a test)
If so...
Flash a stock rom.
Somehow, I was able to flash it with Odin in Download Mode this time. Phew! I read somewhere that the flash might fail if You're using wrong USB port. At first I connected my phone to a eSATA/USB combo port, and for the second time (after brick) I tried a normal USB 2.0 port in my laptop. Maybe that's what made the difference, I have no idea.
Anyway, I'm running stock Samsung 2.3 rom and am trying to install Darky's 10.0 RC3 on it - I am running into some problems, but thankfully they're much less serious than the brick that I was able to fix.
Thanks for Your help!
I ran into similar problems last week. A rom wouldn't flash, so I gave it an hour and it proceeded nowhere. Had to pull the plug on it.
Sometimes it just takes a few times plugging and unplugging repeatedly until it just happens to get detected by Windows. Maybe just a bit of luck too
Congrats on your recovery.
Just wondering which stock 2.3 rom did you use and which Odin setting you used to get your phone up and working again.
Here is my post / problem, seems similar to yours
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020223
Thanks
I had the same issue like warnec on my first darkyy flash, finally everything went fine...don't worry!
just try to reflash with odin (maybe going for a stock version first is a good idea), be sure to do everything as mentioned in the guides out there. and be sure your computer works stable, maybe you want to quit some tasks in the background (however it should work even without but something crashed my odin once...)
Reflash with Odin to make your phone work again. I suggest using a stock 2.2.1/2.3.3 ROM. It is important that it consists of the 512.pit file, a PDA file, a Phone file and a CSC file. The ROM must have bootloaders included!
Now, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
Start Odin and load all the files. Tick 'Repartition'.
Start your phone in Download Mode by pressing Vol-Down, Home and Power.
Connect it to your PC and wait for Odin to say 'Added!'.
Now hit Start, wait 2-3 minutes until it is done and your phone should succesfully reboot!

Thanks I tried this and my phone just keeps flashing i9000m screen, then blank and then back to the i9000m screen. Looks like the phone is unusable.

does not sound very good...could you solve your problem yet?
Had to take the phone into Bell. Waiting on return of it and currently using a loaner HTC Desire Z from Bell.

Made a boo-boo switching to serendipity.. bricked...

So I was trying to go from serendipity 6.4 to 7...
I was following the directions on the serendipity site, got to the point where it was supposed to be flashing the new boot loader and gingerbread. Odin sat on "zImage" for about 15 minutes before i decided for some reason that it was frozen and that unplugging it and trying again might help...
now the only thing I can get from the phone is a black screen with red and green dots when i try to get to download mode.
any suggestions??
Elliot
zImage is the kernel. This should recoverable
Did it get passed boot.bin and sbl.bin? If so you've got the new boot loaders. vol down and power to get to DL mode. Since odin hung and was disconnected before completion the image for DL mode might not even be on the phone. Try that combo (or better yet a jig) then whatever screen it boots into hook it up to odin and try flashing just xcals gb kernel. If it's not in DL mode it will just hang on "setting up connection."

Got it to what is now just a white fuzzy screen (not giving me the black with dots anymore) and the computer doesn't recognize im plugging anything in. about to head to radio shack to source a jig.
Assuming im not completely water-headed, there should be a screenshot of my odin attempt, for your viewing pleasure...
if thats the first fail, then the bootloaders were never flashed so try the old button combo... switch usb ports first of all no matter if you try the next peice of advice or not anytime odin fails you should swap usb ports(always making sure its on the back, no hubs or front ports)...open odin, hold volume buttons and plug in usb chord on your phone...
a jig is always a good idea... i made mine before i ever flashed anything so i knew i would have an out if things went sour.

finally got it to download mode, but now im frozen at "param.lfs" after "firmware update start"...
Thank you so much for the prompt help studa, I really appreciate it
Hmmm...not your day huh? If it's frozen you have no choice but to disconnect. All the damage has been done. When you disconnect now you will most likely get the "clay" screen: phone....!.....pc and like I said before the download mode image might be missing. But this should still be recoverable
What version of odin is that? The earlier versions tend to freeze up more. go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133 don't worry about the firmwares just at the bottom there is a few versions of odin. 1.7, 1.81 and 1.82 try one of those.

Fortunately, I am apparently allowed a few more tries... it keeps letting me go back to download mode after it inevitably freezes at either "param.lfs" or "zImage"...
I tried with 1.82, still no luck...
umm could be the usb chord...
ouch.... a usb cable.... but on the other hand, you are now my hero!
Thank you very much sir, donations ye shall receive

[Q] Bricked phone? flashed SlimICS through Clockwork

hey all, i've had my captivate for about two years now, and for a while i used cognition, then for the last year i've been using firefly. firefly has completely destroyed my phone's speed and responsiveness, and i needed to clean everything off and start with a minimalist ROM. so i picked slimICS.
i'm still very hazy on the details and terminology of flashing ROMs, but i got two to work (i remember using one-click root thing in 2010, and then in 2011 i flashed firefly through clockwork) so i figured it shouldn't be a problem to install slim, which i figured would be my last ROM until next year, when i'd get a new phone.
so i backed up my stuff, tried to get into recovery mode with the 3 buttons (didn't work, unsurprising since it didn't work last year either), took out my SIM, went to CWM, and selected the flash rom option. this restarted the phone and sent it into recovery mode--except it was the stock recovery, and i couldn't select anything because i think firefly made the phone think it was the i9000 model from canada, instead of the i897 captivate, so it assumed i had a physical "ok" button on my phone (which i obviously do not). i tried the power button, the various capacitive buttons on the bottom, nothing would select any of the options, so i just took out the battery and put it back in. the phone immediately booted into the CWM recovery menu, in which i selected flash ROM, and scrolled down to choose slimICS.
i let it do its thing for a while, it jumped between the AT&T white logo screen and a screen with scrolling text for like 5-10 minutes, then just stayed on the AT&T logo screen for another ten minutes. i should have left it for maybe a half hour to be sure, but i figured the install failed. i couldn't get out of this so i pulled the batttery. and now the phone is bricked (soft i hope). if i hold the power button it goes to the AT&T white logo, flashes briefly for a half-second and goes back to the screen, then stays there indefinitely. no button combinations seem to work. does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks!
Since you backed everything up, I'd suggest flashing a stock rom via Odin or Heimdall to clean everything up before moving forwards.
You can flash a non-bootloader one to be safe, or if you want to make sure you can flash anything, flash a package with Gingerbread bootloaders.

how do i flash anything in my phone's current condition? it doesn't turn on fully. it's stuck at the white AT&T logo.
Turn it completely off (pull the battery, if necessary), then hold V+ and V-, and insert a USB cable. That should put it in download mode. Once you're there, you can flash a stock rom (There's a stick with those roms in the development section).

doesn't work. as i mentioned in the OP, i can't get into download or recovery mode or whatever. these button combos have never ever worked with this phone. for example, holding + and - and inserting a cable with ODIN open has never done anything. that's why i used clockwork.
Sounds like u r gonna need a Jig. If u are on a pc, click on my sig link below and there u will find a link on how to make a jig and/or where to buy one.

is that guaranteed to work? or is it most likely? or is it unlikely at this point?
The jigs that I have made myself in the past and as well the professional made ones that I have purchased have always worked to get me into download mode.
The jig is worth a try, I suggest you should
if I'm reading the op right, and if memory serves firefly was an I9000 build and button combos are different. My suggestion would get the Odin kk4 one click with repartition and WITH boot loaders from 4-2ndtwin's sig links, open that and while powered off and holding just the vol- button insert the USB that should do the trick. I9000 builds use different boot loaders with different button combos. Since you will be flashing a boot loader package be aware this is when you can truly hard brick your device. Be sure you have a good connection and cable before starting. If you still can't get into download mode I can +1 on the jig. The jig and 4-2ndtwins one click has saved my bacon more than once.
ok so i bought the jig, and good news: it gets me into download mode! yay!
problem: i don't know where to go from here. i've tried the following:
A. after getting into download mode, i followed the ODIN method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266, meaning i flashed the gingerbread bootloader update (nothing happened to the phone, which made me confused when i got to step 7., because i was STILL IN download mode), then flashed the speedmod kernel (which reset the phone, but it just got stuck in the "SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE i-897" white text on black screen, forever. i had to do a battery pull. turning on the phone goes to the same screen and then it freezes. trying to hold all three buttons to go into recovery mode alternates between that screen and the white AT&T screen, actually alternates, forever if i let it.
B. after that failed, i tried using the 2.2 Heimdall one-click (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172) but the file, when run, says
Code:
ERROR: Drivers Not Found
Installing drivers
but i still followed the instructions (except the instructions say "Install driver" but the actual button is "Replace driver"?) in any case, this does nothing. and then checking off "Flash bootloaders" and doing it again does nothing. the phone remains in download mode.
C. so i wanted to try one-click downloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, but nothing pops up on the ODIN window when i plug my phone in. i can't even do anything.
please help!
please, does nobody know what to do?
Take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread for some more things to try. At this point, it sounds like you need to clear all the phone drivers off of your machine and reinstall them.

thanks, that worked! (it was my laptop that was the source of the connection issues i think; i tried all that stuff in the thread, but when i switched to the desktop, all of a sudden ODIN recognizes the phone!) i got my phone to flash ODIN one-click. so now i'm back to stock 2.1 eclair.
however, much to my dismay, i still can't get into recovery mode to (re-) root. the three button combo still does the weird flashing thing, where the white AT&T logo shows up, then the screen goes to black, then the AT&T logo, then black... ad infinitum. how do i either 1) enter recovery, or 2) re-root the phone + get a nice, lean, fast, modern ROM on it without going into recovery?
so far this thread has helped me unbrick the phone, now all i need is to update it from stock!

I could be wrong but when you do the 3 button combo it sounds like you are continually holding the buttons which will cause it to keep looping like you describe. Starting with your phone off hold down all three buttons. The phone will show the white ATT screen. Then if you had a custom kernel it would show the kernel splash screen, in your case you said it just goes black which is fine too. Then you will of course get the white ATT screen again. As soon as you see the white ATT screen again release all the buttons and that should boot it into recovery.

i tried various durations of holding the buttons. none worked. 2nd AT&T logo, nope. 1st black screen, nope. 1st AT&T logo, nope.
Your gonna have to get ADB set up on your pc. Then... "adb reboot recovery" will get u into recovery mode.
