I've been experiencing some oddness with my Moto Droid, and I want to blow it away and start fresh. Current ROM is CM7. I want to find out, if I boot and issue a "wipe data/factory reset", will I then have to start COMPLETELY from scratch, in that I will need to root the phone again? Or, is there any suggestion on the best way to proceed, since my ultimate goal is to do a fresh CM7 installation, and restore my apps when that is complete?
No, factory reset will clear data and cache but leave the recovery the way it was before.
you need to flash the sbf again to have an "untouched" phone.
When you flash the sbf, and it's like unboxing a brand new phone. Look on footprint for the sbf. I you will need rsd lite as well.

Then how can we remove clockworkmod?

I am going to be selling my Hero to someone who would like it rooted (as it is now).
His plan is to use it in WiFi mode only and won't be activating it with Sprint.
Is there a way to clear all my private data (logins, bookmarks, contacts, calendars, etc.) without unrooting?
Will he then be able to enter his google account info and gain access to the Market though WiFi?
Thanks!
Eph
The "Factory Reset" feature does the trick. But if you are really paranoid, you could wipe data, cache, dalvik and resintall the ROM from recovery.
Won't factory reset unroot me?
Will he still be able to access the net and the market via WiFi?
What ROM are you running?

Factory reset should bring the phone back to the state it was in when you first installed the rom. If you really want to be safe, boot into recovery, wipe everything and reflash the rom. You will still be rooted. Remember to either remove and keep your sd card or to format it to erase the data on it, THEN create a nandroid for whoever is buying the phone. Yes, they will be able to run the google setup via wifi if they choose to do so.
Weird.
After I do a factory reset (either from settings or from recovery), it stays in a boot loop. I have to pull the battery and restore the Nand.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Eph
Tried many different factory resets last night.
Tried from recovery mode and from settings>privacy.
In each case, I got stuck in boot loops.
Also tried to wipe data, cache, dalvik and resintall the ROM from recovery. Same thing - boot loop.
All I could do was pull the battery and do a nand restore.
Any ideas?
go here and download the ruu. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800586 . follow the instructions. this WILL take away root and will flash you black to stock. then, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-743289.html and follow those instructions to re-root your phone. it is very easy. then flash your rom of choice again. that will erase your data AND get rid of your bootloop. idk why the othere way isnt working for u though
OR, you should try to take out your sdcard or format it before you reflash the nfinite's stock. i had this problem once because some of my data was on the card and so when it tried to boot it got stuck.
Thanks guys. I tried the factory reset a couple more times, and for some reason it booted.
Thanks again!
Please help. I downloaded DSP Manager on my Captivate, and now the phone is stuck toggling between the Galaxy S screen and AT&T screen. I'm currently running stock Froyo and Speedmod kernel. I can get into Recovery mode and Clockwork, but "wipe data/factory reset" did not fix the problem.
I've searched this forum for my particular problem, but couldn't find any answers. Please help.
Probably need to reflash the stock ROM. That would be my best suggestion. It sounds like DSP either damaged a file or replaced it with something that doesn't work.
Here's the best set of directions to flash stock with odin.
Clear dalvik cashe might help. Or just re-flash what ever rom you use from recovery. Shouldn't need to go back to stock.

Tried clearing Dalvik Cache, didn't work. Jay1390, is there any other possible solution rather than completely wiping my phone? I mean, I'll do it, I'd rather have a phone that works rather than a $200 paperweight. But, couldn't I somehow "uninstall" DSP Manager?
You have already wiped data/factory reset, so the data you are trying to not lose has already been deleted, at this point flashing to stock will only fix your boot loop problem, did you happen to make a backup either nandroid or tibu?
Edit: oh, if you are talking about the stuff on the sd card flashing to stock doesn't wipe that, but if you want to be safe go into recovery and mount it to your computer and copy everything to it before you flash stock.
Reminder:
If you installed CWM and Rooted zip from recent updates,
DON't DO EVEN Factory Reset from "Privacy" Tab of the OS.
It is clear that you should not do that in recovery menu,
just a reminder that you should not even do it from Privacy tab within the system menu.
It will reboot, and brick your device.
I am at work, I will restore my DS7 later when I am at home.
I thought the privacy reset is just to wipe USER data. But apparently, it wipes more than that.
By the way,
Restore from CWM wont help in this case.
Re-install dj336.zip wont help in this case.
Wipe cache/wipe user data/ re-install dj336.zip wont help in this case.
Seems the only way is to flash original boot and recovery and then do everything over again.
I am a little disappointed that the restore in CWM did not help at all. besides using it to flash dj's rom, what the hell other benefit we are getting from this CWM anyway?
Nothing. Lol. Its bs but hey least there is a recovery there

hu... took me a good hour to recovery from an almost brick situation.
Thanks for all reference posts in this forum. =)
Noob questions. Every time I flash a new rom I become narotic, and I first disable any lagfix, then go to cwm, and factory reset, cache, dalvik, and batt stats all wiped. I'm assuming I don't need to do this if it's a full wipe rom? Can I even skip the lagfix part or is that always necessary?
Also if I'm upgrading a version of a rom, ex, apex 6.4 to 6.5 or any other situation same as this, can I just flash it without doing any prep before hand?

if it's a full wipe ROM than yes, the ROM does all the wiping for you. And if the OP states for you to disable lagfix before flashing than i do so.. also if your just doing an update you can usually just flash over one another. But its always good to check with the ROM dev and see if he suggests any special wipes or whatnot.

You can still do whatever your used to and are comfortable with. BUT this is what I do before flashing any rom.
I go to market and make sure all apps are updated.
Next I go to titanium backup and backup all user apps and system apps with data (I NEVER RESTORE THE SYSTEM APPS OR DATA THOUGH)
Next I boot into recovery and perform a backup (which saves almost Evey aspect of my rom I am on before flashing
I boot back up and then reboot into recovery again.
Then I install whatever rom I am flashing at the time.
I DO NOT WIPE ANYTHING OTHER THAN CACHE WHILE IN RECOVERY AND BEFORE FLASHING THE ROM.
I have NOT had more than 1-2 issues flashing anything since I started using froyo, so that includes any froyo rom, the gingerbread rom that first was made, then Continuum and on my second cappy the same except I also have flashed CM7 on it.
The one or two times I had issues ALL I ever did was boot into recovery and run restore from the previous rom I was on. Then reflash the rom I was trying to get on to. I really have have had NO ISSUES NOT wiping anything other than cache.
I look at it this way, if it works the first time I flash a rom I am golden and do not need to reset up everything. If I have a issue then I CAN start from scratch with a factory reset and wipe cache and dalvich cache IF NEED BE. At least then I am ON the rom I was trying g to go on in the first place.
Then after all seems good I will restore my user apps and some user apps with data with Titanium Backup. So MOST of the time I have changed roms and all is working with no issues in 10 to 15 minutes.
Again this is HOW AND WHY I do it that way. A NANDROID BACKUP and TITANIUM BACKUP are your BEST FRIENDS in these cases.

6.5 is a wipe version which would take care of wiping caches. You dont need to disable lagfix. But as someone said always keep a nandroid backup
Also you may want to post these queries in ROM thread for quicker response
I always disable lagfixes just for good measure. Most roms do a full wipe so there's no need for any of the other stuff.
So I am running the latest helly bean, it was really fast and snappy when it was at V2,V4 ish but recently my phone is lagging alot i tried several fixes but i want to start over my phone is so messy with random files. I want a full wipe and then back to helly bean. What is the easiest way to do it?
Im on rogers i896 if it matters.
Thanks in advance!!
Easiest way (don't even have to leave your rom):
1. Backup your files that you actually want to save off the phone.
2. Perform a master reset (should be in the settings somewhere).
3. As soon as step 2 is finished, reboot to recovery.
4. Wipe caches, factory reset.
5. Re-flash your rom (if desired, not 100% necessary)
6. Reboot.
That should clear you out.
If you feel like going nuclear ninja, just flash to a stock rom, do a master clear, then flash back.

Thanks, I do feel like going nuclear ninja lol. Im running devil kernel can you break the process of downgrade to stock for a noob please? Im assuming flash stock kernel and then stock rom, does it matter which stock rom i flash. (ill look around for those files)
All you should need to do for nuclear ninja (that sounds like a good rom name...) is to grab one of the stock one-click packages (there's a sticky in the development section that has them. It really doesn't matter which one you do (although I'm particular to a KH3 Heimdall one-click without bootloaders, but that's just me. )
Put your phone in download mode, flash the package, and then you can do your master clear. After that, if the stock package didn't flash a kernel with CWM, you'll need to flash either a kernel or stock package with CWM. At that point, you should be good to head back to JB.
thanks, im making backups now, ill post how it goes! helly bean instruction say to make sure you have GB bootloaders so ill figure out what that is and make sure i get it lol.
So i factory reset (in rom and in recovery) and flashed stock rom... but all my files are still on my phone!!!
Any ideas? Also after flashin the rom my phone keeps booting to recovery only.
You need to format the phone in cwm under mounts
