SwiftKeyX - Nook Touch Themes and Apps

I have the phone version, not the tablet edition, and that may be part of my problem (but I doubt it...)
There is no "Language and keyboard" setting, either in the regular settings menu or in the Nook Color settings area.
While the Nook Color app does allow for changing keyboard, it says that the .apk must be in /system/app
- that isn't a problem - I used AndroZip to b/u the swiftkey.apk file to the SD card, then used root explorer to copy it to /system/app (yeah - I'm sure there are easier/better ways, but that's what I did...)
It still won't let me change the keyboard to swiftkey (which, btw, is FREE today in the Amazon Marketplace. I'd purchased it in the regular market on my phone previously, so installing it on the Nook was easy).
Does anyone have insight into how to get this done... or if it can be?
Thanks,
~K

I got it to work, at least partially. The keyboard shows up, but I don't see the predictions and the popups on keypress are distracting. But perhaps you'll have better success than I did.
However, as far as your problem goes--I think you should check the permissions on the file you copied to /system/app. I used File Expert to copy the file over, but I found that I had to edit the permissions afterwards to match the permissions of the other files in that folder. Then I reboot the nook and the nook tools app recognized the other keyboard. After that, launch the swiftkey x configurator from your app drawer and follow the steps there. A lot of the settings come up as blank buttons on the nook, so I did the process in parallel on my android phone so I knew what I was doing.
Good luck! And if you figure out how to make the predictions work, I'd love to know!

Is anybody able to get the GMAIL personalization to work?
I'm prompted for my username and password, but when I submit them I get a blank window (where I should be able to select "grant access")
thanks

Hopefully you've fixed this in the time since you first posted, but for anybody else trying to do the same: The new keyboard option won't show up in NOOK Color Tools after you copy the .apk to /system/app until you do a reboot.
I had the best luck with Smart Keyboard Pro. You can set a high contrast theme with no animations whatsoever, so it's easy to see and it doesn't flicker except for toggling between upper- and lower-case letters. I have never been able to get predictions to work with Swiftkey or Smart Keyboard on my NST. I do shut off the auto-caps and other features that can be hard to use on the NST.

I have never been able to get prediction working on the NST, so personalization wouldn't help.

[Q] SwiftKey Skin/Theme

This has been asked before, but I think I am capable enough to attempt this myself!
I'm looking for the installed swiftkey apk, or any associated data files, none of which I can find on the device or sdcard. I've looked in /system/app but there is no apk found in there.
The app is listed in Settings -> Applications, but I've no way to determine where it is in the file system.
Does anyone have any ideas? If you would like to help please install the SwiftKey Free version and see if you can find any data or image files. I highly recommend purchasing it if Swype isn't working for you. It works very well for me and is far more accurate and only slightly slower.
My objective is to re-skin my copy of SwiftKey to be similar to Swype or the default Samsung keyboard. I can produce a clockworkmod or metamorph package for those interested.
Thanks!
The apps that you install are located in /data/app. In that package you'll find the icons in the normal place, (res). I would love to see a theme/skin for this app. Ive tried almost every keyboard available, and this is the best one for me. Much better than Swype in my opinion. Good luck!
SwiftKey is my favorite keyboard too but i was not satisfied with the graphics at all.
So I decided to decompile and reskin it completely.
The result is astonishing. I'll post a screenshot soon.

[Q] Has anyone's Keyboard disappeared?

I have an autonootered 2.12.25 NC running ADW launcher and a few misc apps (Angry Birds, Astro, Root Explorer, Titanium, etc). All was running great until last night all of a sudden my keyboard disappeared. If I clicked on a field to enter text (search, pandora login, gmail, shop, etc) The white search box would pop up but NO keyboard. So I went to SETTINGS==> KEYBOARD and the menu starts to pop up, but then closes. I looked in system/app and I have the LatinIME.apk in there so no I didn't inadvertently uninstall it. In fact, I haven't installed any additional keyboards.
I also noticed that after the keyboard disappeared when I checked the Market the apps were limited to returning only like 10 apps when browsing the "Just In" apps. (All I could do since I couldn't search without a keyboard) I was thinking that somehow I must have been flashed back to non-root or something but I still had Superuser and the Market and was able to access the root files via Root Explorer. I am wiping/re - nootering now (THANK YOU Titanium!) but was wondering if anyone had experienced this or knew how to prevent it from happening again? Preesh!
P.S. Man I can't wait for a Recovery Image!
Did you check in the app Nook Color Tools to see if the keyboard selection was unchecked? Just a thought. Good luck.

[Q] Some questions about a newly rooted NC

Okay, so far, mostly good, but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've used autonooter for 1.0.1 (after upgrading the firmware to 1.0.1 of course) and also disabled the cell and telephony services by renaming them to .OLD.
1) How do you get the web button to actually launch a different browser than the stock one? I've installed Dolphin and Dolphin HD and set each in turn as the "default browser" in their settings and mutliple times after multiple reboots. But when I use the 'web' button on the NC menu, it always takes me to the stock browser. What am I missing here?
2) I don't want the 'email' app running. I don't need it, don't want it (have web-based email for everything I need), but can't figure out how to keep it from running. Or maybe I just don't understand what it does? Can someone explain either the necessity of email or how to shut it off?
3) I also notice something called 'social' running. Have no clue what it is and figure I probably don't want or need it running. Can anyone explain this one for me (why I need it or how I shut it off)?
4) Has anyone found a workaround to replace needing a reboot to make installed apps show on the extras page?
5) How to you manage the 'extras' page? As the amount of installed apps grows, the page is becoming more and more difficult to use. Is this something simple I'm missing?
6) I noticed the open book/recently reading icon doesn't work now unless I use the stock launcher. I've read that all you have to do is run it once (then go back to softkeys or whatever) and the button works, but also read that disappears each time you restart (see above). Is there any workaround to having to do this?
7) Is is possible to remap the other keys? For example, make the open book button do something else? Or the keys in the menu that comes up?
8) Lastly...what size microSD card does everyone recommend? Seems anything over 4GB would just be a waste.
Thanks to anyone who responds!

Don't use the Web button. Launch the browser.
Set it to sync manually. Fixed.
Ignore, part of B&N
Use a launcher. ADW Launcher works great.
See above
Pretty sure if you hit the softkey for the B&N apps, hit Library, then tap the Book icon you're talking about it will launch the last book. 2 extra taps.
Those aren't keys, and let's just say no.
Anything under 8G ain't going to have much music or data. Up to you.
Thanks khaytsus but...
1) When you say "launch" the browser, from where do you mean? I tried the web icon in Zeam and it does the same thing. Are you saying the only way to use an alternate browser is to open extras or apps and launch it? So 'set as default' doesn't work on any of these browsers?
2) I set up the email check frequency to never but it still runs once rebooting.
4) Tried using the applications icon in Zeam and ADW, but it still doesn't show newly installed applications until a reboot.
6) Thanks for the suggestion, but the book button still doesn't work.
Any other thoughts?
Don

I'm not sure I understand why that's relevant. Have you posed that question to the hundreds of others on here who have done so?
I am curious why people choose to root.
Just root your own and find out.
Sent from my hacked nook color.
I am rooted. I rooted because I thought this $249 eReader would make a great tablet with the right hacks/rom. So far the market, gmail, calendar and others things work great. Waiting patiently for CM7.
4/5 Theres no readin to use the b&n bar. Use the app drawer (from adw or zeam) to launch your apps. In the app drawer hold down your browser (use dolphin hd or another, the default is no good) icon and it will make a shotcut on the main screen. You dont really ever have to use the default bn stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872295 Do this to put books on your homescreen. Even when u close a book it will remember the last page u were on.

Is there a fix for the new market yet?

I'm running CM7 nightlies on my Nook, just wondering what I need to do in order to get the market work the way it's supposed to. (Hidden download buttons, can't update apps, etc)
set lcd density to 160 in build.prop
force stop market, clear cache
brings back functionality for ~ 1 day, clearing the cache again get's you another day, etc.
long term fix...?

I've failed at this multiple times
Using ES File Explorer and giving it permissions, I can edit but not save the build.prop file.
Don't know if this matters, but I have CM7 on the sd card (no eMMC install).
Also, I suspect the /system folder is read only?
I thought the solution is
a. Stop (rename or uninstall) the MarketUpdater
b. Clear cache / data on the Market then uninstall "Updates"
Step b. above is a roll-back (old) version of Market (2.6.x.x?)
Step a. above is stopping the Auto Update of the Market.
There's some report of modifying the density to 160 in the build.prop.
you can also use a LCD density changer app from the market. the biggest problem is that none of the fixes are long term. you can change the lcd to 160dpi and clear cache but in a day or two you're back to where you started. the only long term fix for now is to go back to the old market and freeze or delete the updater. or at least until the old market becomes incompatible.
I know this sucks. why are we being CENSORED by google
I uninstalled market update then cleared cache and data, then in root explorer I deleted market updater.apk and now I have old market working just as it should. Thanks for the tip boxcar!
What am I doing wrong? I have cm7 on sandisk sd. Installed the latest nightly and installed gapp file for cm7. Installed lcd density changer app and set to 160. Force stopped market and deleted cache, but still not working right.
I don't understand how to set the market back to the old style.

to get the old market back all you have to do is...
1) in settings / applications / manage applications / press all scroll down to market and uninstall updates.
2) with titanium you can freeze the market updater or with some kind of file manager app like astro or root explorer you can delete the updater. if you delete the updater and wish to get it back all you have to do is re-flash gapps
3) now you should have the old market back
4) enjoy
If I set my density to 160 or 240, then force stop & clear data in Market app (after reboot, before connecting to Market), the new market works fine for me. Works fine for many days at 240, seems to work for only a day or so at 160.
I change the density in build.prop using Root Explorer, so it stays that way every time I reboot. Running 177 from sd card.
If I also uninstall updates when I do the above, it reverts to the old market, and that works fine for a day or less.
If Google was really trying to prevent the Nook Colors from accessing the Market, they could probably figure out a more effective way to do it. I think this idea is paranoia, and the cause is just something weird in the rom's details. I could be wrong, though.

How do you set the density to 160 or 240 or whatever? I downloaded the ROM toolbox, but I cannot find under which menu this lcd setting is?
Everybody is talking about setting the LCD density as if it is already taught at the kindergarden.

Ha, that was my reaction too. I had to search a lot to find the procedure. The techies seem to assume that we all know this stuff, and have probably gotten tired of explaining it to every noob (understandable).
You can use the LCDDensity app, it's the easy way. You set the new density, it reboots into what you just set. However, reboots after that seem to go back to the default of 161.
I use the Root Explorer app, which allows you to go into build.prop and change the LCD density there.
Open Root Explorer.
Open 'system'.
At the top you need to change r/o, read only, to r/w, read/write, by pressing the box that says 'Mount R/W'. It'll change to 'Mount R/O'.
Long press 'build.prop'. Choose 'Open in Text Editor'
Scroll to line that says qemu.sf.lcd_density=161
Change 161 to 160 or 240, or whatever
Press menu>Save & Exit
Press 'Mount R/O' to change back to read only.
Voila.
I've had LCD Density at 240 for about 2 weeks now. No problems here with the market. =) Sometimes the apps dont show up in the list but you can still update them by manually searching, which subsequently adds the app to the list.
It's large, but surprisingly, I actually like the largeness.

The market seems to differentiate between tablet offerings at 160 and phone offerings at 240. In fact, on a freshly refreshed market at 160, you can find a category titled "editors picks for tablets" at the top. No such heading exists when the market is refreshed at 240. But even then, all previously downloaded apps can still be updated.
This is probably why you can't find some apps, but can still update them.

I had my Nook Color with 1.2 and 1.3 manually nooted go into endless boot cycles after a while because of the Market automatic updates.
I found that the automatic updates in Market screw up the latest manual nooter. Here's how I fixed the problem.
*IMPORTANT* You have to do this before the Market first updates itself resulting in an endless boot cycle. This procedure will unfortunately also stop automatic updates to the Market. However, it also stops the Nook Color going into the endless boot cycle after the first Market update.
1. Wipe the device (8 failed boots) and clean the memory (press and hold n while booting and keeping the power key depressed).
2. Complete the B&N registration process.
3. Upgrade to the latest B&N firmware (I tried 1.2 manually)
4. Use CMW and manual nooter by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1054027&page=1 to root your Nook Color.
5. Use the Market to download Terminal Emulator (see https://market.android.com/details?i...roidterm&hl=en for details)
6. type

# pm disable com.android.vending.updater

Change the look of Android to WP7

This is a simple procedure to change the interface of android to windows phone
First of all,I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY HARM YOU MAY CAUSE TO YOUR DEVICE!!!!!Guys just a sec! I am busy u knw!But finally, after long waiting, here's the procedure
First download these awesome softwares from other cool devs available on the play store or as apks on the net
Launcher 7(Home screen)
Photo safari(Pictures hub)
Z player (Music Player)
WP7 Notifications(Notifications.Duh!!)
My xbox live(games hub)
Wp7 Lock(lock screen)
WP7 Contacts(Contacts)
Wp7 Phone(optional)
Wp7 calculator
Wp7 email
Downloaded? Now for the second step,Shift all the user apps to system apps.Apps like the phone and music should be replaced.Xbox live, calculator can just be loaded.NoteELETE THE ODEX FILES IF YOURE DELETING A SYSTEM APP!!!
In case you dont knw how to make a user app to system read on,else, skip the next para
There are two ways you can convert a user app to system:The NOOB way and the XDA way!
Noob wayownload titanium backup pro, long press an app,go to special functions and click move to system app Or download system app mover.
XDA way:
Important: Make sure to allow any SuperUser permission requests that you may get during these steps..
Procedure
Configuring ES File Explorer for root read/write access (required only once):
Launch ES File Explorer, press Menu and tap ‘Settings’.
In the settings, enable the ‘Up to root’ check box.
Further down in the settings, enable ‘Root Explorer’ check box. You will get a warning that you should confirm.
You will then get the Superuser permissions request that you must allow.
Finally, enable the ‘Mount File System’ check box, and press the back key to get back to the explorer interface. ES File Explorer is now configured to work as a root explorer. You do not need to do this again on the same device now, unless you uninstall ES File Explorer, perform a factory reset or install another ROM.
Finding the APK of an already-installed normal app (skip to step 3 if you already have the APK):
First of all, install the app from Play Store, if you haven’t already done that.
Launch ES File Explorer and go to /data/app. (You may have to press the back button to get to / first).
If you know the icon of the app, you can easily find it here. If you are having trouble finding the app here due to the confusing names or because of having a lot of apps installed, just search for the app in Google Play Store in a web browser and look at its Play Store link for the name. The file name will basically be the part after ?id= in its market link (and before any other question mark that may or may not appear in the link).
If you already have the APK of the file that you want to install as a system app, make sure you have transferred it to your device’s SD card if you haven’t done that already. Also make sure you know the path where you have copied it on the SD card.
Once you have located the required APK on the SD card from ES File Explorer, tap-and-hold on its icon till you get a menu, and tap ‘Cut’. You should see a little blue arrow on the bottom of the screen now. (You may select ‘Copy’ instead of ‘Cut’ if you are copying a file over from the SD card and want to keep a copy there. In case of copying an APK from /data/app, always use ‘Cut’.)ES File Explorer Copying
Now press the back button till you reach / and then browse to /system/app/
Tap the little arrow that you see on the bottom of the screen. It will bring up a pane with the icon of the copied file.
Tap on the file’s icon, and it will be transferred to /system/app/.
Now find the app’s icon in the list of files there and tap-and-hold on it till you get the menu.
Scroll down in the menu till you see ‘Properties’ and tap on it. You will now see the properties dialog.
Tap the ‘Change’ button in front of the Permissions to bring up the permissions dialog.
Make sure everything under ‘Read’ is checked, only ‘User’ is checked under ‘Write’ and nothing is checked under ‘Execute’ Your screen should look like the following:ES File Explorer Permissions
Tap OK on this screen and then on the Properties screen. Your app’s permissions are now set correctly.
Reboot your device. Your app is now ready to be used as a system app.(optional)
Well were done!
youre ready to use ur brand new WP7!!!

Just buy a WP7 phone.
Oh wait, no need to buy. just moaning to them about your android or ios phone and they will give you free one.
There are many apps in the market that will change the look to WP7. Start with a metro UI launcher.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
The best metro style launcher is Launcher 7, it has a great customizatoin capablities, and even came with some live tiles.(email, contacts, calendar, gallery, widget tile). even more you can customize tiles.
here you can find the launcher and many nice alternative png for tiles.
also if you are on a CM9/10 or AOKP ROM you can find some winphone7 themes too. I can't find the link right now, but sure you can find it in XDA. just search for wp7 theme.
and you can find a nice messagind app, name Messaging 7. and a status bar replacement named statusbar+
if WP7 has only a single perfect point it is the launcher. It's about a month that I'm using Launcher 7, and surprisingly I found it even easier to use than usual android launchers.
p.s the launcher 7 is designed by an independent developer so it has some bugs. for example contacts live tile drains the battery at unbeliveable speed. ignore that live and use a static one.
