[Q] Some questions about a newly rooted NC - Nook Color General

Okay, so far, mostly good, but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've used autonooter for 1.0.1 (after upgrading the firmware to 1.0.1 of course) and also disabled the cell and telephony services by renaming them to .OLD.
1) How do you get the web button to actually launch a different browser than the stock one? I've installed Dolphin and Dolphin HD and set each in turn as the "default browser" in their settings and mutliple times after multiple reboots. But when I use the 'web' button on the NC menu, it always takes me to the stock browser. What am I missing here?
2) I don't want the 'email' app running. I don't need it, don't want it (have web-based email for everything I need), but can't figure out how to keep it from running. Or maybe I just don't understand what it does? Can someone explain either the necessity of email or how to shut it off?
3) I also notice something called 'social' running. Have no clue what it is and figure I probably don't want or need it running. Can anyone explain this one for me (why I need it or how I shut it off)?
4) Has anyone found a workaround to replace needing a reboot to make installed apps show on the extras page?
5) How to you manage the 'extras' page? As the amount of installed apps grows, the page is becoming more and more difficult to use. Is this something simple I'm missing?
6) I noticed the open book/recently reading icon doesn't work now unless I use the stock launcher. I've read that all you have to do is run it once (then go back to softkeys or whatever) and the button works, but also read that disappears each time you restart (see above). Is there any workaround to having to do this?
7) Is is possible to remap the other keys? For example, make the open book button do something else? Or the keys in the menu that comes up?
8) Lastly...what size microSD card does everyone recommend? Seems anything over 4GB would just be a waste.
Thanks to anyone who responds!

Don't use the Web button. Launch the browser.
Set it to sync manually. Fixed.
Ignore, part of B&N
Use a launcher. ADW Launcher works great.
See above
Pretty sure if you hit the softkey for the B&N apps, hit Library, then tap the Book icon you're talking about it will launch the last book. 2 extra taps.
Those aren't keys, and let's just say no.
Anything under 8G ain't going to have much music or data. Up to you.

Thanks khaytsus but...
1) When you say "launch" the browser, from where do you mean? I tried the web icon in Zeam and it does the same thing. Are you saying the only way to use an alternate browser is to open extras or apps and launch it? So 'set as default' doesn't work on any of these browsers?
2) I set up the email check frequency to never but it still runs once rebooting.
4) Tried using the applications icon in Zeam and ADW, but it still doesn't show newly installed applications until a reboot.
6) Thanks for the suggestion, but the book button still doesn't work.
Any other thoughts?

Why do you think you need a rooted Nook?

I'm not sure I understand why that's relevant. Have you posed that question to the hundreds of others on here who have done so?

I am curious why people choose to root.

Just root your own and find out.
Sent from my hacked nook color.

I am rooted. I rooted because I thought this $249 eReader would make a great tablet with the right hacks/rom. So far the market, gmail, calendar and others things work great. Waiting patiently for CM7.

4/5 Theres no readin to use the b&n bar. Use the app drawer (from adw or zeam) to launch your apps. In the app drawer hold down your browser (use dolphin hd or another, the default is no good) icon and it will make a shotcut on the main screen. You dont really ever have to use the default bn stuff.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872295 Do this to put books on your homescreen. Even when u close a book it will remember the last page u were on.
6 Its broke, havent seen a work around.

Close Application and Switch trough Applications

I am aware of the Oxios Memory Program and the use off Task Manager to save memory but I have some questions.
1. Is there a way to really shutdown a program after Using it, without going to Task Manager or something like that? I tried the HangUp Button, Home Button, Go Back button etc but it's not really shutting down the program, and only a few program's has an Exit item build in the menu.
2. Is it possible to get a list of current running applications (like PPC phones have in the top right) or an other way to navigate trough currently running applications. Sometimes I'm using mail, a Game and Media Player together and then the only way to navigate between them is by using the home button and then go back trough the list of apps, though this is very limited.
To my knowledge there is nothing like this. A solution would be to remap a hardware button state to the task manager to more easily launch.
Yeah I've modified my homescreen with a small Launcher (just the Standard last opened Apps Launcher, nothing special though). This quickens everything a lot, but as you other users know is still not optimal.
Thanks for your thoughts Anyway.
I'd recommend you Smarttoolkit (free download here). It combines hibernation (like oxios) and superb task manager (and other features). I use version RC08, because RC09 doesn't always work properly for me...
First I thought STK was some sort of Tweak Utility, but I recently saw some screenshots of a flasy program and download -> installed that and I loved it, it only had some hang up issues but after downgrading to RC08 this was reduced to almost nothing.
Later on I noticed the program I was using now is the programm you recommended me, thanks after all.

Another great program to run alongside STK is AppCloser http://wwwu.edu.uni-klu.ac.at/apitman/appcloser/index.php
Very easy to set up and you can add the apps you want to automatically close when you press home into a text pad.
Hope this helps.
I run on s620 but works on all Windows smartphones, just looking at the s730 thread due to thinking about getting one.

Easy way to quit browser? Am I missing something?

OK, this may be kind of a dumb question but...Why isn't there a quick way to quit browser? Menu--->Quit like with Pandora would be a useful addition IMO. Right now, there is no reliable way to quickly quit the browser other than hitting back however many times is needed until the browser quits. Or, menu--->windows--->X on the open windows--->once a new window opens up the hit the back button again. Seriously, it doesn't make sense.

Use advance task manager or some kind of task killer to kill it.

Android will kill/clean it up when the ram is needed.
Why not just let android do what it does and kill it when it's necessary?

While correct I find android deals with backing out of an app and pressing home differently.
Home says try to keep the apps state.
Backing out says I no longer need this app.
Neither kill the process but the second will be chosen first if more memory is needed. So by using back in general I find it more likely when I need multiple apps in ram they will both/all stay there.
The browser of course overrides the default back function to a web browser's back button unless you are on the first page of a window/tab.. so it can be harder to tell the OS you are done with it.
However even so don't use a task killer on the browser I find it causes some things to become out of place and make the memory issue worse as the day goes on.
If fact just don't use a task killer!! If things are going slow and you have swap. . Reduce or remove swap. If you have comp cache above the cm default same applies.. if you are tired of waiting on the home screen to reload, try keep home in ram.
Dolphin browser has exit with or without clearing cache on long press of back.. hopefully it 'backs' and nothing fancy. (Well unless you asked it to clean the cache)

What he said. I don't use a task killer anymore. I could get the quit function on dolphin browser but I don't understand why it isn't a standard function on the stock browsers.

[Q] Looking for Advice/Help for a newbie with a Nexus One.

Hi there. I got my Nexus One two days ago and so far I am enjoying it, however there is a few things which are bugging me. Hopefully somebody will be able to help me out.
My Nexus One is running Froyo, and hasnt been rooted.
1: I have tried to download Flash Player from the market. It says it has downloaded and Installed, but I dont know where to look to open it. Its not on my menu, not on the market page ("Open" isnt available), and when I search for it on my phone it isnt there - Everything else I have downloaded is working fine. Not that. What am i doing wrong?
2: My Wi-fi keeps losing connection when the phone goes into sleep/idle. I have tried a couple of apps, to no avail, it will continually lose the Wi-fi connection - is there an app or something that fixes this? Im left with sticking my display to go into sleep mode after 30 minutes of no use.
3: Which Launcher do you recommend? I have downloaded Launcherpro, but havent used it yet. Is there a "better" one out there (More customisation, less lag etc)?
4: Which Browser do you recommend? I have downloaded Dolphin HD and dont really notice and difference between that and the browser that comes with the phone. I also know there is Opera.
5: When purchasing apps from another currency (Eg, US$) does that charge only come once? My Debit card will only be charged once, and not an ongoing fee or they will suck my bank account dry?
6: Any "must have" apps you know of
Sorry I know it is alot. Thanks heaps

You don't launch flash. It works the same as it would work on a computer - it's a plugin for the browser. What you can do is go to browser settings and set it to on demand, so that pages don't load banners automatically.

Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Menu -> Advanced -> Wi-Fi Sleep Policy

I use ADW as it comes with CM. People say Launcher Pro is faster, but ADW is open source and that's why I like it.

Stock works fine for me, so I don't see a need to change it.

It will be charged only once. Don't worry.

Yeah flash plug in is now in your browser.
Change your WiFi sleep policy to never as described above. WiFi always on actually uses less power instead of letting it switch to 3g when it goes to sleep.

[Q] rooting nc 1.1 using monster root pack 7

i am new to nook color...so i did a lot of reading on this forum...i want to root nc 1.1..which is the best method for rooting nc 1.1
from whatever i have read there is two method one is auto nooter 3 and other is the pre rooted decadence rom..which one should i use..i m tilting more towards pre rooted decedence rom using monster pack .7 .
i also wanted to know if we can root 1.1 using monster pack .7 . it mentions that it is 1.1 compatible but it seems no one has tested it. i m noob to this forum and nc ..so i m sorry if i have offended some one with the above newbie questions..
I just went from ROM 1.1 stock to 1.1 rooted with Monster Pack .7. Works like a charm. Thanks IOMonster!
I just used it on a stock 1.1 Nook Color and it worked great, also installed Gapps just fine and logged into my google account fine. Everything is working on my Nook except the B&N 'Shop' from the main B&N home menu. It starts to load then goes black and nothing is there.
fpga_guy is also having the same problem...is the problem related to monster pack 7 or its a general problem???

I'm not sure, lotta stuff to read on this forum. But I ended up just putting it back to a stock 1.0.1 Nook like it was when I bought it. So it's all back to normal now. It might have something to do with B&N registration, although mine was registered before I rooted and flashed, which is how it's supposed be.
Your registration with B&N may have gotten stale. You can post in the Monster Root Pack thread in devl forum and see what folks are saying.

I rooted with MRP, and also had the broken shop issue. As an experiment, last night I rerooted with autonooter - directly over the already done root, no format, no wipe. (I have a backup in case doing this is dumb, natch.)
Now the shop works.
However, the original MRP device supported the Nook standalone app and the autonooted device (this one, and one which was only autonooted, never MRP'ed) do not support the Nook standalone app.
I strongly prefer the real app. The night mode is actually black, not grey, it more consistently remembers where I left off reading, and deleting a book from the bloody library actually works in the real app. It does not work in the stock library app, and the library app frequently forgets where I was reading when I get back into it.
I'll probably restore from backup this evening - there's too much very good stuff in the real nook app to give up. It is very difficult to get the shop to let you search in that app, but recalibrating the touchscreen makes it more likely that you'll be able to. Since search on the device is so weak in the shop, I'm ready to give it up for the better night mode, the better remembering where I left off, and the vastly better file curation.

I used MRP because I couldn't get autonooter to work, and so I'm in the no-shop state. I can download free apps (angry birds, of course), although I haven't tried to buy any.
Also, gmail has trouble with my email; I get lots of instances when it goes back to the index after displaying a message for a little while, and for some messages this happens before displaying anything. Is this a FC?
Softkeys also seems to be in a somewhat confused state; I don't quite understand what it's trying to do (well, I know it's creating onscreen buttons or remapping vol+- to replace the hard buttons on most phones, but that's my limit). I often get a popup saying that it couldn't do the task as su; is there some softkeys or su doc I haven't found yet?
However, I'm confused. The autonooter image only contains /boot; where does everything else come from? Does it download everything else from the PC, and that's why you have to plug into a PC?
Hmm.. I don't have SDK/ADK installed (and so no adb), is this why autonooter failed for me?
Please bear with me, I'm a long-time command-line unix/linux user, new to android. I've been using the MRP SD card to install zips, so if there's a flashable zip that fixes this, or an image that I can raid (sudo mount -o loop ...), I'm all set. If it's an adb hack, I'm out of luck for a while.
OK, I'll stop typing now...
Thanks!

Softkeys is much better now; I like it a lot more. I managed to get it to pop up a root attempt and allowed it, so it works.
Still no joy on the shop front; the non-gmail email app might be better, at least for me, but I do wish that it had collapsible folders. My folder tree is > 20 years old and rather, umm, organic.
Cheers!

I realized last night that whenever I try to visit an https: website (gmail, google/contacts, www.401k.com) the browser FCs on me.
Oddly enough, accessing gmail works just fine, so security bits appear to be different and only one of them is broken.
Does this happen to others?
Dennis
Autonooter 3.0 is great. It produces a Nook Color with full B&N functionality (the stock reader, including magazines and read-to-me kids books, the in-store browsing) that you can also install apps from the Android Market (and Amazon app store) on.
For me, right now, this is "good enough." When B&N releases its update, I'm going to wait for a pre-rooted package here before upgrading.
The reason I probably won't do anything crazy (like go full CM7) is that I'll probably buy a purpose built Honeycomb tablet for that once the market matures and prices come down.

I was in the same state. Following a suggestion from another thread <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005975>, I applied autonooter-3.0.0 to my MRP'd NC 1.1.0, and all is well! AFAICT, you can ignore the instructions for after the reboot, it didn't act like a fresh NC at all.
BTW, not only did the shop FC, the browser couldn't load any https: pages, either. Are you in this situation?
Good luck!

How to bring up multi-tasking screen on Nook HD+?

How do we open the multi-tasking screen, or the running apps screen, so that I can easily close running apps with a swipe to free up resources? On most Android devices I've used, at least more recent ones, you either double-press the Home button, or maybe press and hold the Home button. I've not found any way to open a similar screen on my Nook HD+. Also, I find plenty of apps that will allow me to close background apps and processes, but nothing that will allow me to close regularly running apps.
Also, I should mention that me HD+ has been rooted since about early 2013. I rooted with an early root method and it seems like I recall part of the process being installing an app that sort of "captured" the Home button press and you selected what to do on a single Home button press, a double-Home button press, etc. I can't seem to find any evidence of that app being installed currently, so I'm thinking I may have wiped and rooted with a more recent method since then. Still, I'm wondering if that may possibly be part of the problem.
Anyway, if anyone is aware of a method to bring up the screen I'm referring to, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks.

If all you did was root the tablet and are still running the stock system, there is no such capability other than by going to the app manager under Settings where you can force stop some apps.
What you describe sounds like a Kit-Kat and later capability using the symbol to the right of "home" (whatever it's called). That opens a list of app history from which you can quickly go back to an app or close out individuals or the whole lot.
OK, so it wasn't a feature of the Nook HD+ at all, and since it doesn't really have any other buttons other than "Home"...
I guess I'm so used to it from newer Android devices that I assumed it must have been on this one, and that maybe it was something I'd messed up during the original root years ago.
Thanks for the info.
I haven't used the stock BN ROM in a while, but I thought there was actually a custom version of the multitasking screen accessed from a slightly different looking icon on the far right corner of the navigation bar?
