How to bring up multi-tasking screen on Nook HD+? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do we open the multi-tasking screen, or the running apps screen, so that I can easily close running apps with a swipe to free up resources? On most Android devices I've used, at least more recent ones, you either double-press the Home button, or maybe press and hold the Home button. I've not found any way to open a similar screen on my Nook HD+. Also, I find plenty of apps that will allow me to close background apps and processes, but nothing that will allow me to close regularly running apps.
Also, I should mention that me HD+ has been rooted since about early 2013. I rooted with an early root method and it seems like I recall part of the process being installing an app that sort of "captured" the Home button press and you selected what to do on a single Home button press, a double-Home button press, etc. I can't seem to find any evidence of that app being installed currently, so I'm thinking I may have wiped and rooted with a more recent method since then. Still, I'm wondering if that may possibly be part of the problem.
Anyway, if anyone is aware of a method to bring up the screen I'm referring to, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks.

If all you did was root the tablet and are still running the stock system, there is no such capability other than by going to the app manager under Settings where you can force stop some apps.
What you describe sounds like a Kit-Kat and later capability using the symbol to the right of "home" (whatever it's called). That opens a list of app history from which you can quickly go back to an app or close out individuals or the whole lot.

OK, so it wasn't a feature of the Nook HD+ at all, and since it doesn't really have any other buttons other than "Home"...
I guess I'm so used to it from newer Android devices that I assumed it must have been on this one, and that maybe it was something I'd messed up during the original root years ago.
Thanks for the info.

I haven't used the stock BN ROM in a while, but I thought there was actually a custom version of the multitasking screen accessed from a slightly different looking icon on the far right corner of the navigation bar?

Feature Request

Hello Chefs (and all you microwave re-heaters..you know who you are..)
I have a request for a feature either as a standalone app, or implemented into a rom. Maybe, it's not possible. I don't know.
What I would love to see is a simple task killer (no gui) mapped to the 'hangup' button on android phones. When I'm running an app and I want to close it, I hit the hang up button, and it kills the currently running app. This seems to me to be intuitive, would streamline task management/eliminate unneeded apps running in the bg, and make Android much more user friendly.
Order of Operations would work something like this.
User starts an App (Browser)
If the user hits the hangup button, Browser would be killed and the screen would return to the home page. A second click on the hangup button would turn off the screen and lock the phone.
If the user hits the home button, the app stays running in the background, and when the user clicks Browser again, the app returns in it's current state with the last loaded page available.
Like I said, it seems pretty simple and straightforward. I know it would require a rooted phone, but it seems like it would give maximum flexibility to the user and allow them to kill the apps that they want when they want to. But maybe it's not possible. So please, let me know. Thanks for the great work guys.
And what would you do if you had a call running in the background?
WHY do you want to kill the running application? It won't do anything once you switch off of it except consume memory, and if more memory is needed, the task killer will take care of that for you.
If you need this you either:
* fail to understand how the user interface works in android (including reclaiming of processes)
Or
* are running applications by developers who didn't design the application to work correctly on android.
The button you are looking for is the back button. It will background the app immediately and allow it to be overwritten as soon as anything needs memory.

[Q] Remove task manager

I have cognition 2.2 beta7. I have made every attempt to remove that stupid task manager, but it's hijacked the long press home option even after I removed it. Anyone know what I would do to get back to the normal long press home thing?

The long press home has always brought up a dialog for selecting recently run apps as a sort of short cut to multitasking even in the stock eclair rom shipped by samsung. The only difference in the froyo leak is that dialog now contains a link to enter a new front end app to the task manager.
I don't know how to remove that link - I'm guessing you will have to edit something in the framework somewhere. And by the way - you may have or be able to remove the front end user interface app to the android task manager but you can't remove the actual android task manager and still have the phone be operational.
The long press home thing in android isn't exactly a "Task Manager" in stock android. It functions as a way of accessing apps.
The front end app, has hijacked that screen by adding it's button to it.
I was able to delete the app, but now I am stuck a task switcher screen that has a broken task manager link on it. (which if clicked happens to lock up the entire device.)
I'm sure I'd have to get down and dirty somewhere, but I just don't know where.

That dialogue was not hijacked by anything - the link was intentionally encoded by someone from samsung to be in the dialogue in froyo 2.2
Ugh. Why would they do that to us?
That link below is why I think it's stupid. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links yet but I'll try anyway.)

Yes. While task managers have value in allowing someone to watch their phone learn what is going on with their and give them some knowledge and a tool for trouble shooting, far too many people are using them as a system resource management tool, killing processes and apps without really knowing what they are doing or that it is completely unnecessary. Often people are even doing more harm then good as they are going way too far in their zest to kill that they are keeping their phone from operating properly.
I think that is what samsung is probably attempting to accomplish with this limited front end app to the task manager that is being included in their froyo builds - trying to give people a tool to satisfy some of there (way over the top) task killing mania while keeping people safe from getting to deep in there task killing and causing problems.
Hopefully more and more people will start getting the message - quit all the arbitrary unneeded task killing - use your task manager keep tabs on your phone and to catch any problem apps that you may of installed - and leave the resource task managing to the actual built in OS task manager as it really does do a good job - so long as you don't have some poorly coded resource hog software installed.

[Q] Some questions about a newly rooted NC

Okay, so far, mostly good, but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've used autonooter for 1.0.1 (after upgrading the firmware to 1.0.1 of course) and also disabled the cell and telephony services by renaming them to .OLD.
1) How do you get the web button to actually launch a different browser than the stock one? I've installed Dolphin and Dolphin HD and set each in turn as the "default browser" in their settings and mutliple times after multiple reboots. But when I use the 'web' button on the NC menu, it always takes me to the stock browser. What am I missing here?
2) I don't want the 'email' app running. I don't need it, don't want it (have web-based email for everything I need), but can't figure out how to keep it from running. Or maybe I just don't understand what it does? Can someone explain either the necessity of email or how to shut it off?
3) I also notice something called 'social' running. Have no clue what it is and figure I probably don't want or need it running. Can anyone explain this one for me (why I need it or how I shut it off)?
4) Has anyone found a workaround to replace needing a reboot to make installed apps show on the extras page?
5) How to you manage the 'extras' page? As the amount of installed apps grows, the page is becoming more and more difficult to use. Is this something simple I'm missing?
6) I noticed the open book/recently reading icon doesn't work now unless I use the stock launcher. I've read that all you have to do is run it once (then go back to softkeys or whatever) and the button works, but also read that disappears each time you restart (see above). Is there any workaround to having to do this?
7) Is is possible to remap the other keys? For example, make the open book button do something else? Or the keys in the menu that comes up?
8) Lastly...what size microSD card does everyone recommend? Seems anything over 4GB would just be a waste.
Thanks to anyone who responds!

Don't use the Web button. Launch the browser.
Set it to sync manually. Fixed.
Ignore, part of B&N
Use a launcher. ADW Launcher works great.
See above
Pretty sure if you hit the softkey for the B&N apps, hit Library, then tap the Book icon you're talking about it will launch the last book. 2 extra taps.
Those aren't keys, and let's just say no.
Anything under 8G ain't going to have much music or data. Up to you.
Thanks khaytsus but...
1) When you say "launch" the browser, from where do you mean? I tried the web icon in Zeam and it does the same thing. Are you saying the only way to use an alternate browser is to open extras or apps and launch it? So 'set as default' doesn't work on any of these browsers?
2) I set up the email check frequency to never but it still runs once rebooting.
4) Tried using the applications icon in Zeam and ADW, but it still doesn't show newly installed applications until a reboot.
6) Thanks for the suggestion, but the book button still doesn't work.
Any other thoughts?
Don

I'm not sure I understand why that's relevant. Have you posed that question to the hundreds of others on here who have done so?
I am curious why people choose to root.
Just root your own and find out.
Sent from my hacked nook color.
I am rooted. I rooted because I thought this $249 eReader would make a great tablet with the right hacks/rom. So far the market, gmail, calendar and others things work great. Waiting patiently for CM7.
4/5 Theres no readin to use the b&n bar. Use the app drawer (from adw or zeam) to launch your apps. In the app drawer hold down your browser (use dolphin hd or another, the default is no good) icon and it will make a shotcut on the main screen. You dont really ever have to use the default bn stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872295 Do this to put books on your homescreen. Even when u close a book it will remember the last page u were on.
6 Its broke, havent seen a work around.

[request] App similar to WinMo’s “endkey”

With sense ROMs and Builds requiring us to use “turn off” instead of restart. And some of them have modified power menus so using a third party app to turn off the device may be as bad as removing the battery. Is there a way to make an app that activates the sense power menu. I’m not sure if anyone’s familiar with this: create a shortcut for the program “endkey” located in windows folder, and assign it to a quick launch button, when you click on it you’d get the same menu you normally get when long pressing the end key. I’m guessing that it’s possible to create an app for android that simulates a long press, thus saving us plenty of long presses on the end key. but would anyone be willing to create such app?

+1 for this .. Let's see who can do it. (I wish I could do it, but life's life i guess )
I don't think it's that hard, but we need a developer/programmer who knows what to do.
Search the Market for 'Quick Boot' I think it will do what your asking for, although you'll need the paid version to get the hot boot option to restart without going back to WinMo.

thanks for the reply.
I wouldn't have posted this if I hadn't tried quick boot. It did turn off my device, but it also cost me an hour of restoring my sense back to the way it was, because it made my android crash the next time I ran it.. I'm not sure if it does the same to NAND roms, but it sure made my day miserable on my SD build. and I was able to try the paid version, and it gave me the same result.
an app that opens the native sense power menu, or even a scrip to do so is much more reliable than a hit and miss app originally designed for android phones.
You have and SD build right?
Are you asking for someone to make an app/widget/shortcut that you use while in android that will call up a WM program to restart the device? Maybe I am confused.
yes, I can't live without WinMo..
and no, what I'm saying is since some developers modified the shutdown process, a normal shutdown isn't safe. The solution is by either creating a program that can access the original "sense" power menu options, or an app capable of bringing up that menu. even a script that brings up that menu would be fine.
The resemblanse to WinMo's end key, that endkey.exe is the program that runs when you long press your power button, so if you create a shortcut for it you can run it without pressing the power button.

Question [Rooted] [ArrowOS / custom] Remapping soft keys

Hey,
I'ts pretty much straight forward : I have a rooted device powered by ArrowOS. It's sooo much better than MIUI, I love it. BUT I'd like to be able to remap the soft keys.
These last days, I noticed how often I tend to let a bunch of apps running in the background. I don't like apps like greenify etc. it doesn't fit my needs in terms of ergonomy. I just want to be able to kill the foreground app and display the recent app screen when performing a long press on the recent apps button. That I can't do with basic button remappers, even with pro and rooted versions. There's actually a "no-root" app on the playstore, which offers you to do it and needs some previous manipulation : adb or root. I chose root and then was led to a compatibility-testing screen, which failed. Not surprised, as the playstare originally denied me access to download for compatibility reasons.
Currently, it's pretty hard to find any non-non-root app to do what I want, as newer versions of android made navbar's customization easier, allowing to do it with a simple adb procedure. But I don't have access to a computer, for now, and even if I wasn't just assuming that if a root couldn't make the only app that I found work, adb won't be useful, there's a guy on xda that tested both without success.
Did anyone here have any success doing this ? How ? Thanks

Try cherishos. It has a long swipe gesture and you can set it up to kill foreground app
