Can't get 3G on my Galaxy S (GT-i9000) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

6 months ago a friend of mine sent me a Samsung Galaxy S phone from Spain. Now the thing is that I am stuck in EDGE, and can't use the 3G network of my operator (Movistar). I live in a zone where there is no 3G service so I didn't notice it at first, but when I go to another zone, one with 3G, I'm still in EDGE!
Is it because I use the Movistar network? Should I switch to another service provider (Nextel or Claro)? or do I have the wrong phone for my country?

Europe (including movistar EspaƱa) uses UMTS 2100 for 3g. Chile uses UMTS1900 and UMTS 850. Nothing can be done unfortunately, because a European Galaxy S only supports UMTS 2100 as far as I know.
Correction: Apparently a European Galaxy S will also support 1900. Movistar Chile uses UMTS 850, however Claro and Entel PCS both apparently support 1900, so they should work. Entel PCS may be best as they use only 1900, whereas Claro apparently uses both 850 and 1900 (I don't know if that means some parts of the Claro network are 850 and others 1900, or all parts are both, which is why I say Entel may be better).

Some of that I read, but I wasn't sure. I live in Peru, and I think it's the same :S

Question on purchasing a Tilt

Ok well I am considering purchasing a unlocked AT&T Tilt, but I have been reading a bit about the 3G. Currently I am a T-Mobile customer and have read they will be operating on a different band frequency for their 3G. T-Mobile will be using 1700/2100MHZ while AT&T operates on 1900/2100MHZ. Will the 3G on the phone still be compatible?
Please someone clear this up
Appreciate it
Kaiser uses (under the Band options for the phone settings)
GSM (So gprs, edge) 850, 900, 1800, 1900.
UMTS (3G, HSPDA where available) 800, 850, 1900, 2100.
So it would be partially compatible, but only on 1900 cells, not the 1700 ones. These might co-exist like in the UK where some operators use all the frequencies for better bandwidth, or they might not. I'd check with T-Mobile what frequencies are operating in the areas you'll use the phone.
Well I live in the US and they still have not rolled out the 3G network here, they said sometime by summer. So if they use 2100 then the 3G still should be able to work? Since they still will be using the frequency except the 1900.

Coverage in other countries

This may be a stupid question, but I'm asking anyway since I can't seem to completely understand the specs.
Will my 8925 work in South Korea?
I looked, and they use 3G 2100 there, and the 8925 uses GSM 850/900/1800/1900; UMTS 850/1900/2100
It just confuses me because it shows UMTS 2100 and not 3G 2100.
it works worldwide
Sweet, now if only I can find a SIM card from KTF or SKT.

the diamond in various conuntrys

hey!
Does anyone know if a diamond bought in the US will work in Israel?
You can go to www.gsmworld.com and then roaming, and then coverage maps. (pick a country)
Here you will see all the various networks in that country and the bands they use. For Israel all networks use 900, 1800 or 2100 (3G).
Since the only diamond you can buy right now uses 900, 1800, 1900 GSM and 900, 2100 3G, it will work perfectly in Israel.
I also want to add that HTC diamonds bought in the US currently is the Europe/Asia version (lacking the 850 band). This will/might change sooner or later.

Xperia x2 3G bands.

can anyone with a european xperia x2 confirm what 3g bands it has.
i keep on reading conflicting theories.
either its UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz or UMTS 850/900/2100 MHz.
i think they are already being sold in the netherlands.
which one is it?
thanks
Any european variant of a SE handset always has 3G bands:
a) 900/2100MHz
or
b) 900/1900/2100MHz
but i saw some websites it says that it has 850mhz 3g plus i need to know if it has the 1900mhz because in manhattan where i live it works on 1900mhz 3g.
The XPERIA X2 white paper says
a) X2 (European) has 900/1900/2100MHz 3G bands
b) X2a has 850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz 3G bands

[Q] 850 band on GT-I9000

hey,
i have a GT-I9000, and i'm trying to enable 850mhz band for 3g,
i flashed the jjjv5 modem which is 850enabled,
and selected the 850 band through *#2263#*, the second i select 850 i get no signal, does that mean my phone isn't 850mhz capable or does it mean there is no 850mhz reception in my area ?
galaxy s suports all bands
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
so you dont have 850 band in your area.
perhaps i was not clear - i'm trying to connect to 850mhz WCDMA band, not GPRS/GSM.
where do you live ? do you have the international i9000?
i live in israel, where we have a 850mhz/2100mhz 3g carrier (Pelephone)
the phone was purchased privately, not from the carrier.
i'm not quite sure about the phone version, the box states UMTS bands as 2100,1900,900.
the writing on the box and every document about the phone states GT-I9000.
does that mean that 850 3g band is not possible for me ?
i9000 doesnt support israel's 850 3g band, you can use 2100 instead which is suported by both ,phone and carrier
