ClockworkMod not loading? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive searched the forums but couldnt find anything helpful. so i have my captivate rooted and its on 2.2 fw. i load rom manager and it says the clockworkmod is loaded and i reboot to recovery but i get the android recovery 3e instead of the CWM. I try to apply the update.zip but of course the signature is not verified. i tried older versions but half of them are not loading. I also tried the 3e modified recovery installer but after it installs and runs rageagainstthecage it fails on stopping adb server. Any help would be great.
Thanks - MaDDaWg
EDIT: I foudn a way to manually redo the recover to run unsigned sigs. sorry for the post. feel free to delete!

I have sort of the opposite problem- I recently used CWM to upgrade a DX to the pre-rooted GB and all went swimingly except that just about everytime I reboot the phone, CWM turns on. From there, if I select reboot, it will reboot properly, but I can't get CWM to turn off. I had this same problem on another DX and I was able to go into Manage Apps, found the D2 Bootstrapper running, so I selected "Force Stop" and that resolved the problem, but on this particular phone, the D2 Bootstrapper is not listed in the running applications, so that resolution is a dead-end.
Thoughts greatly appreciated!

Rom manager by clockwork

Everybody says this app is great but every time I try to do anything with it, it reboots my phone to a green progress bar but before it finished it switches to a picture of a phone with a red question mark on it....am I doing something wrong? I wrote the devs with no response

Have you flashed the engineering rom? You need to do that.
Oh ok....I didn't know you had to flash that for it to work thanx so much for the help...they should tell you that on the app

ROM Manager is for every device that can run clockworkmod recovery, not just the slide. The slide is the only one that can't get a recovery to stick as far as I am aware, so there's no reason for them to include a warning in an app used by tons of devices when only one of them has the issue.
True...didn't look at it that way

I have a stupid ROM Manager question... I remember trying to use a while back and hit a snag. When you open it, it first wants you to install Clockwork Recovery, and of course we cant make ours stick. When I tried this a while back, I remember it breaking my recovery and took some fiddling to fix it. Should I let it run this option, so I can then use it to manage my ROMs?

It now has a recovery for the slide and it works great. It is the only I use to get in recovery.
So to be clear, I can use the Install CWR option from ROM Manager? I cannot do anything else in ROM manager without it wanting to "install" it.
on mine it is the first option "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", pop-up will show up and it only has the choice of "MyTouch Slide" after tapping that you are good-to-go for rebooting into recovery and flashing ROM's
Yeah I went ahead and did it. I get a lot of Superuser FCs still with it. I even hit the Fix Permissions, which says may fix FCs, and it FCs on me
that's odd I am running it on both of our phones without issue, didn't even have any issues running dumfuq's experimental dopio 960 oc kernel.
I see what happened. Cyans latest ROM comes with a different/newer SU app. When Rom Manager flashed recovery, it downgraded SU. I just grabbed the SU out of the latest CM6 ROM and pushed it to system in recovery and all is good. Running Fix Permissions now to see if it stops the FC I get on some uploader service upon each boot.
oh I forgot, unless you have already figured it out, the power button is NOT used for selecting in cwm anymore... volume still does "up" and "down", track-pad is now "select" and the back button works as "back page"
hopefully all is good.
So, Rom Manager can get you directly to Clockworkmod?
I just got a new Slide, rooted it, and immediately flashed the ENG build.
I then flashed MyFroYo6 with Rom Manager. No dice. What the hell am I doing wrong?

[Q] I896 - Unable to flash clockworkmod

Hello Everyone,
As my post count indicates I'm new to the forums, I've been a lurker here for a long time for various phones. I am a Android noob but I'm finding it fun to work with. I just got my Galaxy S two days ago, I'm on the Rogers network. I'm in the IT field so I am quite comfortable with this type of work yet I can't help but feel like I'm missing something really simple. The problem is I am unable to flash ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager - I choose the option and I get the progress bar at the top of the app for a second then nothing happens. My phone is rooted via z4root. I've ran "Fix Permissions" from within ROM Manager then power cycled the phone. ROM Manager in the application list within SU. I've tried removing and reinstalling ROM Manager as well. I'm at a bit of a loss.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Go there, and copy that update.zip to your sdcard, then manually enter recovery and reinstall packages. It will load CWR from that update.zip.

Touch the future of reading

Currently I am running nookie froyo 0.6.8 from the internal rom but I am having the following problem even when I had eclair with autonooter. When I am turning off my nook for the night, in the morning I am stuck at the "Touch the future..." screen and I can only boot through clockwork recovery and choose reboot. I think that it started when I flashed clockwork for the first time, but I am not sure. Any ideas?

I am searching the forums to find an answer to the same problem. I am running stock eclair that has been autonootered. I don't have clockwork installed. I can always boot with the sdcard to Honeycomb.. sometimes I can then reboot back into Eclair.
i had this one time, i try the 8 failed boot's to restore, didn't restore but rebooted to eclair!
arf, i'm having the same problem after all..
I had the same thing happen to me had to reformat cache if I wanted to boot into froyo, its a great system but that one problem did me in went back to stock and rooted the NC and plan on staying this way I just give up flash.Looked all over for fix or someone to explain why but never did get an answer sorry i couldnt help you but if i find answer will let you know
ok will look forward when i have time
At this point i can boot by pressing power + n for 30s, it boot to recovery, then i choose "reboot"
Yes that's right, this is the only way I can boot too (power but. + n).
when rebooted i lower setcpu to 1ghz max. it seems to help to boot ..
There are some really good unbricking//"my nook won't boot" sort of threads to be found in the developers section; but this one should be more than enough to fix your issues:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
Additionally, I find that reflashing to a stock ROM or restoring a previous working backup image from CWM is the best way to go about it. Good luck!
I have the same problem too. Just remove the SD card on power on (reboot with software is OK)
Looking for better fix.

Thx, I'll take a look at that if I ever have booting issues.
Think this is caused by the recovery image. Upgrade your recovery to the latest version 3.0.1.0 and see if that fixes it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971197
Going to try that today ..I just looked and i do have an older recovery file so maybe that is the problem will report back later on it.
Did the update, I will shut it off for the night and will check it in the morning.
Sent from my Nook Color
I also read CWR does not get along with 1.1..I just updated CWR and it still did the same thing what Im going to do now is clean restore then custom froyo then after setup go to market get rom manager install reboot into recovery and then install the remove crw with root file.
I downloaded the restore to stock zip file. Put it on the sd card. Then used the power and "n" to get to the butloader. Chose install from sd card and it installed. Back to operational!

First time CM7...fail...try again..

mkay o i'm kind of new to android and tonight i wet my pants cause i thoughy i bricked the optimus. I wanted to install CM7 but something went horribly wrong.
After I rooted and installed ROM manager I copied CM7 to my SD and installed. After it was done the CM7 boot screen kept looping. No way the phone was doing anything more than that.
The only other thing it would do was to sho a 'waiting for update' screen. After a lot of searching I mangaged to get stock ROM back by using smartflash, praise be...
Now that I know I can rescue the phone I'd like to know what whent wrong..any clues? Did I use the wrong build of CM7? I just used the latest of the 4th of july.
I want to try again but maybe some insight would be helpful, thanks...
Did you remember to tick the wipe data box in ROM Manager?
Well it would not install from rom
Manager (installation canceled by itself and ennded up with fresh install of LG rom...) so after that i did it from recovery. cant remember if i got the option to wjpe in there...
So when i installed from ROM manager i did xheck the wipe boxes. Then started installing from SD. The installation stopped, i have seen some sort of warning exclamation but i could not read what was wrong the message disappeared too fast. I think the 'wipe' was sucssesful though because all my apps and settings for stock LG firmaware were back to factory.
Ah ha.
ROM Manager and the stock ROM don't get on too well. Boot to recovery, wipe and install from there.
Assume you are using CWM recovery? It has the option to wipe on there if you look carefully so you can wipe it manually before flashing.
I tried again and it seems GB is now running cause I can see the battery icon on a different angle but it keeps givin me LG installation error messages after boot which i may ' forrxe close' but basicly nothing happens. Did i forget to wipe somerhing or forget to do smth else?
What recovery are you using? If it's 4.0.0.5, you might want to update to the newest 4.0.0.5, as the original one I built had some problems formatting.
The error messagel all seem to refer to LG apps or services. Device wont go beyond these messages.
I know, if it's what I'm thinking, they will have been left behind during the CM install, which shouldn't happen.
Ok so what do you think i should do? thanks for the snappy replies rusty.
Fyi, behind the error messages i can see a black background. The top bar with battery indicator is present, it charging. Signal indicator is there but has no signal.
Change recovery and flash again, either to 3.2.0.0 or the newest 4.0.0.5
this is what it looks like now. When i switch off and do volume down+ power its says waiting for S/W upgrade.
First i need to re-install syock again i guess? Wont do much else..
If you're getting software upgrade, you're letting go of power to early, keep em both held.
Edit: Or use 'adb reboot recovery'
hmkay im in recovery now thanks for that. It says 3.0.2.8
Signarure check enabled
Signature check disabled
Script asserts eneabled
Im not quite sure what you want me to do now. Thanks for your patience
Oh, 3.0.2.8 shouldn't have had any problems then, annoying.
Still, pik the wipe data/cache option, then install CM7
Im there thanks so much Rusty.

Cannot Access CWM Recovery Mod

[SOLVED -- Read my last post]
Posting on forum was my last resource, but I've tried literately almost everything I can possible find.
I already bricked my phone and had to unbrick, do everything (update firmware etc) all over again.
I am at a point where I am afraid to do something new to my phone now without knowing what they are...
Please bare with me, I am not familiar with exactly what flashing is or whatnot, I just followed the instructions and got where I am....
K, recently I decided to wipe my phone CLEAN and update to new CyanogenMod 9 from factory mode.
So, I have Captivate, I897. It was ECLARE with 2.1 firmware.
I have updated to 2.3.5 (Gingerbread [I897UCKJ2]), Rooted.
I had to Flash BACK to KK4_stock_kernel.tar for me to use WIFI again because I had issue after Rooting my phone, I couldnt access the WIFI.
I installed Clockwork mod (Free version).
My goal is to install CyanogenMod 9, and part of the process requires me to enter the CMW Recovery Mod.
I dont even know what this looks like, but all I know is whenever I boot my phone, after the AT&T logo animation it seems to go into this "messed up" screen, where as if my phone is broken. Stays there for 3 seconds and then continues to boot back to its OS.
In ROM manager, it says Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (You must have the clockworkmod recovery installed to flash and restore ROMs!)
Another option within ROM manager is, Reboot into Recovery (Boot into Recovery mode for manual management.), which if I do access it, it takes me back to that AT&T logo animation and that "messed up" screen again, but this time it stays there. Where all kinds of colored pixels are on my screen as if my screen is broken. It will only continue to boot back to my OS if I press power button or some sort.
Im guessing that's my Recovery Mod, which my phone for some reason cannot see?
So I tried "Download ROM (Upgrade to ROM Manager (premium) to access the full list of ROMs!", hoping this may cure that messed up screen effect, which I think is the Recovery Mod for all I know... When I click to install, it gives me Confirm Phone Models. None are my phone model for me to install.. (It only gives me Google Nexus S / Google Nexus S 4G / Samsung Epic4G / Samsung GalaxyS i9000).
Earlier, I was looking at this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578
which is a way to fix recovery mod(?) But I have NO idea how to even install those files... Maybe not the .tar file but the other one.
Please help? Am I the only one experiencing this kind of problem? Couldnt find anywhere else on youtube / google / forum..
Thank you VERY much in advance, really appreciate it..
-Dan.

This is your likely problem right here. The Kernel that is installed during the rooting process and typically when you install custom roms is what is responsible for installing and therefor you being able to access the CWM recovery. Flashing back to the stock kernel likely messed things up for you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Now if you follow that link it will take you to several one click options for flashing your phone to stock gingerbread but with a kernel containing CWM. Also keep in mind that it is possible you could have wifi issues if you've had them in the past, but if your goal is to get to CM9 just ignore the wifi for the time it shouldn't be an isuse in the end.
Hey OP,
See this.... TRusselo's Flashing Guide
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
You need Gingerbread bootloaders.
Thanks guys! I figured out the problem and solved it!
Like you guys said, I didnt have the bootloader. The gingerbread I installed was the no bootloader version. After reinstalling to the one with bootloader, I was able to access the recovery mod and that "rainbow screen" glitch was no more.
Thank you!
