[Q] Phone won't boot, simply vibrates. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I tried to update my girlfriends Galaxy S today from Darky's rom to Miui, I tried to remove the lagfix by following the instructions through recovery.
However, after the phone rebooted it now displays the Galaxy S logo, then simply vibrates periodically (every 5 seconds, than every 12 - not that I think this matters).
Does anybody have a clue what I've inadvertently done and how to recover the device - preferable without wiping the data on-board.
Thanks in advance guys.

Just an update, it's clearly a soft brick. I can still get into download mode and recovery, it did a backup before it rebooted however I've tried to restore this backup and still no joy - although I do now get the old rom's boot animation back which is stuck on an endless loop with the phone vibrating in the background.

You probably won't be able to fix it without a wipe. You should still be able to get into download mode, so you can flash a full ROM with Odin. You need to use a .PIT file and make sure repartition is checked as the file system is probably broken.

Yeah miui uses a different file system so you have to undo that as described above. Then you may be able to restore the backup.

After you guys pointed me in the right direction and a little more digging I ended up stumbled across galnet's Miui thread and his instructions through there.
To cut a long story short the phone's now running Miui and I'm not in the dog house, thanks for the help guys.

Where would I get a JTAG repair?

[Q] Stuck on boot screen, 3 hours in.

Hello!
I know that I should have done a lot more research before jumping in but here is what happened. I have also looked everywhere in the captivate forums with no luck. I upgraded to stock Gingerbread from Froyo a while back, yesterday I decided that I wanted to root, which I accomplished with Odin. The rooting went just fine, after that I wanted to flash ICS Slim onto my phone, which I soon realized I needed clockworkmod recovery for. After research found out that it doesn't work using ROM manager so I followed a guide to install it and here is where things went sour, following the guide I installed Hardcore’s SpeedMod Kernel it rebooted and it started normally, passing the AT&T bootscreen but now I am completely stuck on the screen after saying "GALAXY S SGH-l897" and on bottom "SAMSUNG". I am able to access the downloading screen and I just do not want to do anymore damage than I have already.
TL;DR: I'm stuck on boot after installing Hardcore's speedmod kernal, able to get on download screen, don't want to do anymore damage. Long story short, what can I do to repair my phone to a usable state?
Google "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to Samsung Captivate" 3rd link down to see the guide that I used.
Thank you for taking the time to help!
I think hardcore speed mod kernel is for froyo/eclair that's why you're boot looping, but clockwork mod should work. Try using the three button combo to get into recovery and flash whatever captivate ICS ROM you chose, assuming you have the file in your internal SD.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
thanks for the reply, unfortunately I don't have any ROM on my internal at all, is there a way to flash a ROM from odin or another software? Or do I have to use the clockworkmod recovery to flash it on?
You can mount USB storage from recovery, so transfer the ROM to your sd card that way
Sent from my ICS Samsung Captivate
Edit: removed cause you beat me to it
Yes, there is a list of stock Odin one click packages in the development forum stickies.

I am trying to mount the USB Mass Storage from ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0, but nothing will appear onto my computer, if I could get this to mount could I flash 2.3.5 using Kies Mini? Would the wipe data/factory reset help me here?
Try reinstalling samsung drivers to get your phone recognized. Since you're on 2.3.5 already, Kies will not let you re-download because it assumes you're on the latest firmware already. Use the Odin one click package. Or heimdall one click.
Don't rush. If you're still unsure keep searching. Read thoroughly so errors won't happen
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
No wiping will not help you lol. Its better to flash back to 2.3.5 and start fresh.

Thanks for all of the help! I was finally able to mount the phone and transfer the rom, installed it after with little trouble.

I've got the same problem with my phone, but I arrived there thru different means.. I used an app called Kernel Manager Light, and believe I tried flashing something called like Fastloader, or Fast boot loader.. something.. anyways, looked good for a minute, while it flashed it, then rebooted my phone & since then, it doesn't load past a screen that reads "GALAXY S" then smaller and below it "SGH-I897".. then across the bottom, "SAMSUNG".. Totally stuck there, for DAYS. I've been reading these forums for what seems like ever, and this is the closest scenario I've found to my own situation.
I can't get my phone into download mode no matter what I do. I can't get into it thru ADB. All I get is that screen.
In ADB, when I type C:/ADB devices, it will sometimes recognize my device (tho more often than not it won't) and even whwn it does, as soon as I try to access my phone thru ADB, it just freezes up too.. I hit enter, and the cursor drops down to the next line, but nothing ever happens from there.
Someone please help..?

!!! HELP !!! I'm very wet behind the ears when it comes to this!!! HENSE my username. this started after connecting my cap. to a pc with intentions of exporting some pics. that initial (1st) and Only pc notification about detecting a usb device, my cousin sitting down at the monitor clicked outside the bubble message. Now from this point on which was several attempts i would get could recognize device msg. I did not know this was gonna be the results, i can actually remember noticable gliches and flaws progressively worse and worse. icons looking like they had a bulb burning out, awful lag in dialer and or any commands. I know now after reading similar posts my attempts to back-up,recover, i did several restore sessions, wiped data & system in a last ditch effort to get my phone back! i was on the road out of my state. not a comforting situation. I'D REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP! I'M LEARNING AS I CRAWL ALONG HERE, WITH THAT BEING SAID I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALOT OF THE LINGO! symbols , abbreviations , etc:crying:
Ur post is confusing...
What firmware are u on -- Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread ??
Did u get ur pics copied off of the phone and to the pc. Under the Settings in ur phone is a USB connection setting to select for when u want to transfer stuff to ur pc.
If ur phone is still jacked up from the multiple backup and restores u did, then u may just have to do a Factory Reset from the Settings menu to get things back to normal...but do understand that that means all ur pics and other stuff will get erased, etc.
If the Factory Reset doesn't work, then I would say get into download mode and flash a Stock firmware (GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 being the latest official) and then proceed forward from there however u want.
See the stickied threads in the Q &A and Dev forums for help with flashin to Stock and Dev Roms.

[Q] Messed it up and need help

This WAS the situation before the problems:
Rooted Gingerbread rom, all working fine. Decided to unroot and install the full version of the official German ICS rom by using PC Odin. All went fine and used my Note for over two days. Because of the lags en slow responses I decided to reflash the ICS rom. From that moment on I messed it up. I've been reading and searching hundreds of posts for almost a day but didn't find a solution.
This IS the current situation:
I can get into download mode
I can get in recovery mode
However, in recovery mode I can not install a rom, every flash (CWM, both ICS and GB - even using chainfire's rom needed for rooting) stops on a random moment...but never gets it to the end, even if I wait several hours. Installing is very...very....very slow.
In recovery mode i can not restore a Nandroid backup, both ICS and GB. Every backup stops when /system has te be installed. errormessage.
In download mode I can connect my Note to PC Odin. I can select a rom and start flashing. However, after appr. 80% installation halts during "nand write start", no error message. The flashing does not finish, even after hours.
Funny is, i can install a kernel like Abyss.
So, I can't restore, i can't flash using cwm in recovery and I can't flash using PC Odin. My device seems not fully bricked. The max I get when rebooting (knowing that the process has not finished) is the triangle screen.
Any advise is appreciated.
Do not flash thru CWM... Flash a good GB kernel like "franco.Kernel" but thru PC Odin then u can flash whatever u want from franco's CWM... Good luck
Don't need help anymore
Note is officially bricked. After several attempts to recover from a softbrick the screen of my Note didn't turn on anymore. No button or button combination works, no recovery and no download mode, just a black screen.

Flat battery? It's also possible that it's just the screen that's not working. Try entering download mode "blind". So hold power+home+vol down for ~10 seconds, then press vol up. Hook it up via usb and see if Odin can recognize it.
Thanks, didn't think of that. But unfortunately no response from the device.
So now that it looks like your phone is officially bricked, I think you should just take it to Samsung and make up a story. Like you were updating your software with Kies and something happened and the phone is just not booting up.
I am sorry you bricked your note though..
try AMORA Filemanager.. flash via recovery and you have a file manager,,, take a look on your partitions
just my idea, you got nothing to lose

Maybe it's just the battery, try to charge it externally and try a JIG also

My Note was superbricked. Had to send it to a Samsung Service Center. No additional questions were asked. Samsung replaced the mainboard. Didn't have to pay anything.

i was not a member when i commited this mistake. but then big thanks to this community it helped me back from softbrick.
first you do is install a stock kernel of ics on your note go into recovery and just clear cache partition, thats it no wipe/data factory reset.
then,
install the pit file from this thread, also read it completely before proceeding. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1667886 , hoping yours is 16gb version and also read this thread for additional info but its quite complicated for me so im just telling you the direct method and hopefully itll get your note back to work. so once you download the 16gb pit file unzip it and in the unzip folder you will find a separately lying pit of 16gb stating patched-standard thats the one you want.
then,
goto samfirmware and download the latest ics firmware(i downloaded the indian one as it is in file .tar),
unzip it till you get .tar file.
open odin- click pit-select 16gb patched standard pit- check wether repartion is ticked- click pda-select the .tar file you extracted connect your phone and start. this time i wont stop at factory.fs.....
NOTE THAT AFTER THIS PROCEDURE IS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE WOULD BE ONLY 8GB INSTEAD OF 11 GB STOCK WHICH YOU WERE GETTING.
I REVIVED MY NOTE THROUGH THIS PROCEDURE. PROCEES AT YOUR OWN RISK.
one your phone is working you'll be able to reset the counter with a jig and get your phone under warranty and get your motherboard changed by teliing at the Samsung Service that you are getting only 8gb instead of 11gb you used to get earlier(warranty only if you had any).
hope this helps mate.
BEST OF LUCK!!
A BIG HUGE THANKS TO hg42.....

[Q] Is my GT_i9000 dead?

Hi, I need some advice. I dropped my Galaxy S in a puddle. It was submerged for the just a second, but when I fished it out, the screen had gone 'weird', so I got the battery out as quickly as possible, then dried it out for a few days in the airing cupboard. I then tried it and it started up okay, then when I swiped to unlock the screen, it froze. since then I have been unable to boot the phone. It shows the Galaxy logo, then restarts and continues that loop.
I wondered if maybe the software has just been corrupted during its bath, so I thought i might try flashing a ROM onto it to see if that would recover. I found that I could not enter recovery mode but download mode opened okay. I have tried flashing a few ROMS using Odin. I am completely new to this and have never flashed my phone before, so steep learning curve. I have so far tried - I9000XWJW5 which I believe is normally used before installing Cyanogen mod. I also downloaded the T-Mobile Stock ROM and one with this filename - CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS. All of these successfully downloaded to the phone and I could see the progress bar on the phone. Unfortunately I still cannot get the phone into recovery mode.
So, whats your opinion? is my phone screwed? Is there anything else I can try which may help, like formatting or anything like that.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
try search for value pack 2.3.6 and flash it then root it after that I believe you should get the recovery option.

Can I do that without being able to get into recovery mode?
I've just been reading that I can use a PIT file to repartition during flashing. Is it worth trying? I noticed in the Value pack TAR file it does not have a PIT file. I got one downloaded from somewhere else called - s1_odin_20100512.pit worth a shot?
I tried including the pit file as well. Odin reported success but phone is still continuous boot loop and I cannot get recovery mode up. Do you think one of those USB things that get you into download mode would help? I'm beginning to think the internal SD is knackered, or something like that.
I think the memory is brocken but i don't realy know. Send it to Samsung for a check

[Q] What to do when I soft brick.

I was installing the DA Statusbar mod. Before I did that I back up my phone using CWM and Titanium Backup.
installed with no problems, I then rebooted. Home screen froze for a second and then showed me that my system.ui crashed. It kept doing that for a good 5 minutes. I decided to go back into CWM and restore my last saved state. I recieved an error installing the back ups (I have made 5 so far).
Now I don't really know what to do. I know I have to basically start from the beginning via flashing stock rom on odin. But how would I go about doing that? I can't seem to find the thread that explains this. =/
Thanks in advanced
SOLUTION HERE
You need to be much more specific. What's your recovery version? How did you backup/restore? Have you done this before? What's the error?
Use the unified tool kit to flash the stock rom.
I strangely cannot find a thread for the 9305 for stock roms =\
The stock firmware can be found on sammobile
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda premium
To shorten the question and answers... If you could still boot to Download mode.
Flash your stock original firmware trhu Odin on your pc or download an exact model for your phone in SamMobile. From there you start a new... Root then re flash the cwm and so on...
If I understand this right you can boot to cwm and you can boot into the phone but the systemui fcs.
You can do a couple things here without having to reflash anything through odin. If you have your original systemui on the phone somewhere you can try and navigate to it with a root explorer then copy it into your system/app reboot and it should be as before, this can be tricky with constant fc's.
If you have a zip which has a systemui in it you can flash that in cwm and should fix the problem.
If you have a custom rom on your phone you can boot into cwm and flash it.
The fact that you have access to cwm and the phone boots but the systemui constantly fc's making the phone unusable means you have more options and quicker ways to get your phone working then going back to scratch and flashing a rom through odin

Solution.
Basically I got stuck at the samsung boot logo for ages.
I am running CWM v5.5.0.4. I have done this before, sorry I wasn't specific, I was trying to multitask. I've attached a screenshot of my phone info for everyone to see.
1. I wiped data/factory reset.
2. Wiped cache partition.
3. Wiped Dalvik Cache
4. Battery Stats
Rebooted, still no luck.
I went into Download mode.
Opened Odin.
Downloaded " Param_Bin_I9305.zip - 612.14 KB" located in this post
Followed the instructions in that post.
rebooted.
Thought it didn't work but my capacitive buttons lit up. SUCCESS!
Saw my homescreen, I thought I would have needed to root again but I managed to get into CWM after rebooting.
I downloaded root checker....I saw that I still had root access.
Installed Pandoriam v6.
Now I am back to normal.
My CWM backup didn't save me, I don't really know why. Maybe I was using it wrong? The thing is It's worked with me in the past, but not on this device.
Is there anyone that could shed light on that issue? I'll try and back it up again. Do I need to repeat the backup more than a few times to register it to the device?
Not sure if this is the right place or not but seems to be a similar situation.
I have a month old S3 LTE that came with 4.1.2 . It has not been rooted or had anything done to it at all.
I found a thread that shows you how to unlock it but was not getting the final option . This I understood was because some of these phones needed to be downgraded .
I saw a procedure using odin and looked for a similar rom on Sammobile but could not see any for Orange UK so picked a random 4.1.1 Rom and flashed it.
This left me with a glowing Samsung boot screen so I tried another ROM and another ROM and finally when giving up choose a current 4.1.2 Rom for EE but that too is stuck at the same place.
Can you help me work out where I am or have been going wrong please?
The Phone is from Orange UK ( EE ) but there was no branding on it .
i also neglected to note the Rom that was on it
if you read the guides you will find out that you need to factory reset after flashing
Unfortunately as the phone is sitting at a glowing Samsung logo, I cannot factory reset. In fact I cannot do anything except keep throwing Roms at it, unless you have any other suggestions?

bricked....

Hi so I was trying to use CF to root my phone and ended up screwing it somehow and bricked. I thought I'd followed the instructions well enough but I obviously did something wrong. Now my phone is stuck saying it needs to recover with Kies. This is my first Samsung phone but I'm not new to Android.
I tried installing the stock firmware through ODIN but everytime I flash it gets to installing the system ext4 and fails. I also wasn't able to recover using Kies(not even sure how you use it tbh).
If anyone could help me it would be mucho appreciated. I'm pretty pissed at myself right now.

Your phone is NOT bricked. If it was the screen would not even go on.
Have you tried going into recovery mode (VolumeUP/VolDown/PowerButton)
and once in Recovery Mode do a factory reset or Data Reset forgot what the
exact wording is in the stock recovery.
If you flashed twrp recovery it's ok too, just select "factory reset".
After doing that the phone should no longer display anything about Kies.
If you get to the twrp recovery screen you should be able to flash a stock
rooted rom without any issues.
If all you get is the stock recovery screen then you should be able to odin
flash the official Samsung Note 4 kitkat 4.4.4 NJ7 firmware which you may
need to download the firmware from http://SamMobile.com if you don't
already have it. (be sure you have the correct firmware for the Note 4 N910T).
Be 100% sure that the phone is FULLY POWERED DOWN before going
into Download Mode to avoid odin errors and issues.
Good luck!
Thanks man. I had tried Odin at my office and nothing doing.
Got home took my time and was real calm about things and voila. May have been an md5 issue with the firmware file. Just relieved I didn't have to RMA it.

Can you check for the file with md5 before you flash from your phone? I forgot where to dig for this info.
All I I have done before is on my cook rom file, I just open it with WinRAR and test for error. If no error, then its good.
On my Home PC I have a program that will put a check mark next to a file if it matches the md5. I also have Winrar at home.
I was just using the default Windows zip program and I have had problems with that and installers/roms in the past.
The only other things I did different were I removed the SD card and installed the drivers before plugging my phone in instead of letting Windows download them automatically.
I also removed the battery after I left work so it was out of the phone for a couple of hours.
The final thing I did was calm down lol after the initial shock of seeing a softbricked screen on my brand new phone.
I'm all rooted now with TWRP and running Hyperdrive so it's all smooth sailing from this point forward.
You should check md5 on phone once you done transferred to phone from PC
