Should I?
I just bought the iPhone a couple of days ago, and I am kind of disappointed. It lacks too many things to list. I know that sdk is supposed to be released in February, but I just don't think it can compare to the Tilt.
I will be using the phone to watch movies on, as I work nights, and that will help, so does the Tilt handle movies as well as the iPhone? I am not concerned with the slightly smaller screen size.
Since the Tilt is basically a mini computer, I know the abilities are endless, I am fairly decent in getting around a pc, plus the internet is a great help, but how hard is it to get rid of all the bloated crap at&t slaps on the phone?
I really like the iPhone's looks, and ease of use etc...but it just seems like it could be so much more, and I am stuck with at&t for another 2 years now, so I am just wondering should I switch to the Tilt before it's too late...
Thanks for any input!!
Michael
If you are going to use the tilt to watch movies... you shall be disappointed... read the various threads on video driver issue... it shall answer a lot of questions...
As far as movies go, I'd say it really depends on your standards of what quality a movie should be when viewed on a phone. What I mean is, I have seen many complaints of the video drivers on the Tilt. I think these must be from people who require/expect excellent quality video.
To me, movies look great on the Tilt, if you take into account, that this is a phone, not your 42" hdtv lcd, lol. They are definitely good enough to view, and pass time. Of course, again, standards of these things are so subjective, but this is just my 2 cents.
So, if you are looking to enjoy a good movie, in decent quality, then the Tilt is great, if you are looking for an amazing viewing experience, worthy of a videophile, then the Tilt will disappoint. From what I have heard, the iPhone is much better for video, although I have not verified this.
One of the greatest things about the tilt is the community you get here on xda-developers, meaning if you are ever stuck with something, these guys can (and will) help.
However, just using a tilt to watch movies is, imho, a bit of a waste. You may as well buy a cheap PDA if thats all you want. The tilt is an amazing device, full of features. And not using them would be doing the phone injustice.
Therefore, if you want a device which will: manage your photo/music/video album, navigate you, make video calls, make phone calls, send text's/emails, play games on, browse the net on, allow you to show off , get the tilt. If you want a device that will just let you play music and watch video's, stick with the jesusphone.
Edit: Oh by the way, I agree with cincy, i think movie's look spot on on the tilt.
Well to first clear up the confusion, I don't want it just to watch movies on lol...I just meant is it able to watch movies, because I work nights, and need something to pass the time with, ie watching a movie. That is just the only thing I am concerned with, I am aware of all of the other features the Tilt has to offer, and in my opinion it is in a class of it's own compared to the iPhone. I just wanted to make sure it could also play movies, so that I can combine all the features too. My other main concern is my wife's Pantech Duo, seems to me rather slow and bloated, which is what I am wondering about the Tilt. I am decent with PC's, but there are still many things I don't know, and just wanted to find out how easy it would be to clean it up to make it run more efficient.
Yes this forum is great, Apple has nothing this nice to help lol...Thanks for the replies, I have pretty much made up my mind to take the iPhone back and get the Tilt, so you shall be hearing from me again lol, for lot's of help making it work well
Well...
If you like the GUI there is an app/skin/theme for winDOS Mobile 5/6 that makes the GUI look like that of the iPhones.
http://www.iphonetheme4ppc.com/guide_QVGA/
There you go, and now that ive found it...
Im gonna install it myself!
I am an Apple MacBook pro user and love many of apples products... And i think the compatibility of the iphone and MacBook would be fantastic!
However I still prefer my Kaiser because it offers so much and isn't anywhere near as claustrophobic as the iphone with its "Apple Bluetooth" and requirement for itunes to do anything.
Dont get me wrong the iphone is nice but its a fashionable piece of Eye Candy and the Kaiser is a useful peice of engineering.
MM
PS I watch stuff on my Kaiser and playback is fine as far as i see, but there are many who loath HTC for the video drivers.
i watch movies via tcpmp during plane trips and enjoy it!

I have both. iPhone for my wife, Tilt for me. The video playback is night and day. I have yet to find any settings that work acceptably on the Tilt. If this is an important feature, you should look elsewhere because even if you are not a "videophile", the video is sadly disappointing.

And BTW, the web browsing is also WAY better. Again, there is just no comparison, even with Opera.
To me, the biggests problem with the iPhone is lack of 3G, no A2DP, and poor poor PIM syncing and no GPS. Strengths, video playback, multimedia syncing, speaker playback (the speakers although small, are actually quite passable and stereo), photo viewing and web browsing.
I don't play many games, but I would consider it a strength of the iPhone. Not sure about the Tilt.
As for 3rd party apps, my (very personal) opinion is there are very few "must have" apps and the one's I use on the Tilt (Resco, ImClose, AEBPlus) are all about usability and do not really apply to the iPhone. A BIG factor here is that most of the built in MS Apps basically $uck, like the photo viewer, file manager, media player, web browser, so it is almost a must to have the option to install decent apps to "replace" the built in ones. In this way, I think HTC is really doing well in mitigating the poor usability of the MS Apps. Like being able to navigate a playlist with a hardware button? No can do with Windows Media Player mobile. WTF???
You can see this even with the HTC shipped products. Their stuff is better that MS too, and many people come here to look for the HTC programs, many even cook them into ROMS.
So now I have to have room for two apps that do the same thing and it basically clutters up my device. Sort of like the 4 remotes I have to use just to watch TV at home. To me this is poor implementation.
So I am probably in the monority here, but once the iPhone supports GPS, a decent turn by turn navigation program like Tom Tom/ iGo and A2DP, and better syncing, I will be dumping my Tilt (much the same way as I have dumped MS Windows). I expect most of these features will come by the end of 2008.

Probably not a good idea to log into a forum and show disrespect to it's other members.
As for your question, to view movies I simply use TCPMP with a few codecs (which I can't remember the names of, sorry) and videos work like a charm.
I also use Kingdia Video Converter to convert my movies to .avi (if they're not .avi already), then use Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn to compress the movie to QVGA size. Brilliant Quality, small File size, win win win!
imo, iPhone is a joke.

You clearly have not played with one much. The iPhone is smaller, lighter, thinner, and much more aesthetically appealing than the Tilt. In February, Apple is releasing SDK for third party Apps, and a GPS attachment (here: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/12/17/gps-add-on-for-the-iphone-demonstrated-to-ship-in-february/
is supposed to be in the works as well. And I suppose not unlike the Tilt, I could always Jailbreak my iPhone, and put homebrew on it, but the iPhone was designed to be a lot harder to take care of if something goes wrong, like the battery not taking a charge any more, you would have to send it in to Apple, but you couldn't because of breaking the warranty. At least with the Tilt, you can put back what you have done to at least get repairs lol....

By community I mean the forum in general. It is the method of communication I am speaking to not the individual members. I fully realize many people have contributed lots of work and advice, and I try to do the same when I am able, but by nature of this being an open ended forum, you don't always find answers to your questions. It can be hit or miss. It just depends sometimes if someone happens to see your post and have an answer. How is that disrespectful?
Back on point, I think this forum is helpful in learning about Windows Mobile products and sometimes getting specific questions answered. This is something also available via Apple, in addition to dedicated product support, which both Apple and HTC offer. If I were considering it as a factor in buying a product, I would score one for the Tilt, as I think this forum is better than the Apple forum, but I would score one for Apple as well because I think their dedicated support is better (stateside anyway, plus it helps I have both an official and unofficial store near me and can walk in and talk to a person).
But are you also sure there isn't another "undocumented" forum much like this one for the Apple products, because BTW HTC also has a forum which leaves a lot to be desired.

Well I love PPC, but obviously you must not have owned an iPhone. I switched back to Windows Mobile for technical reasons, but I have to say we're far away from the iPhone UI. PointUI has a long way to go, everything in the iPhone is connected.
I still surf with Safari, when I have free time, and sitting in front of the TV at home.
lol I just came back from the iphone myself.
Like you, I wanted it for video playback. The screen is great and video playback was smooth.
But there were too many basic things that you couldn't do even with jailbreaking the phone that just left me annoyed.
if you don't mind re-encoding your video the tilt is fine. I re-encoded all my videos to slightly smaller res and put it into an mp4 container and played it on coreplayer. Video Playback is smooth, but it could be smoother with better driver support. But I'm not complaining.
To me, the Tilt spins circles around the iphone.

Not sure how far your computer skills go but trust me, the iPhone is more of a computer than the HTC TyTN II.
You seem to miss the point of the iPhone (the ingenius GUI/OS/touch operation), forget about the crappy EDGE and the lousy camera, this is not why people buy the iPhone.
Watching movies/listening to music is more fun with the iPhone due to the fantastic display quality.
Right now, I'm using three phones: the iPhone (hacked, has more than two dozends of third party apps installed and works like a charm), the HTC TyTN II (business stuff) and the Nokia N95 8GB (family vacations, leisure time).
My favourite is still the iPhone but I wish Apple would have offered it with UMTS/HSDPA from the start.

Only when it comes to third party apps and especially data connections.
Otherwise, the iPhone is by far superior. Of course if you don't mind the sluggish GUI operation of the TyTN II, not even mentioning the ridiculous touch screen operation HTC wants to sell us as innovative, the TyTN II really is a great phone. Don't get me wrong: the iPhone lacks a lot of features but using it on a daily basis as my main phone, I like it much more than the TyTN II or the Nokia N95 8GB. I won't even mention the Nokia E90 which sleeps well in an office drawer since I got the iPhone.
The iPhone is no business phone though, no blackberry support, MS Exchange support is half-baked at best and although the mail application is the best I've ever seen on a phone, the PIM capability is somehow limited compared to other "smartphones".
There is however a catch regarding the iPhone: if you're not a regular and enthusiastic iTunes customer, the iPhone may not satisfy you completely.
The ingenius thing about the iPhone is the easy operation and for the first time finally a satisfying touch control operation.

Is it possible to create an android iphone emulator, like we have wine in linux, and then rape there market place, so that not only do we have all our apps available but all iphone apps as well?
you might wanna look up the abreviation "wine", it stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator, which tries to tell you that wine is not an emulator.
and no, it is not possible. too complicated and not enough computing power.
I laughed at this.

Even if this was EVEN possible, Apple's just going to take being raped in the ass? Don't think so.
IMO, the iPhone has an iron clad ass that can't be "raped".
I have a 32gs and just got a Hero...android has alot of catching up to do...
On a side note, Mozilla is releasing "Fennec" which will be available for WM, Android, and the iPhone that will use universal web apps...Thats the only shot at leveling the app store playing field.
Iphone has great media capability, and I admire that but I do like the way I can customise and get apps that are virtually impossible on the Apple store. Android does have catching up but it's seems to be doing that pretty fast.
I can do anything with my 3gs that i could realistically do with my hero...
wifi router, tethering, multitasking (with a much better gui), download torrents, smart dialer, folders, themes, a cracked app store, much more conveinent toggles, mobile terminal, firewall, ad-blocker, flash drive, file explorer, stream media, download youtube vids,etc...there's even a different interface for the homescreen itself available..the only main diff i see is custom roms, which isnt even any kind of set back for the iphone...
A stock iphone really cant be compared to an Android device (especially one with a custom rom)in terms of out-of-the-box-functionality and abilities, but a jailbroken iphone is right on the same playing field from a user standpoint.
Your response is correct, to a point. A jailbroken iphone is a totally different device, I can flawlessly multitask with a beautiful interface, have a flash drive app/very easy ftp access, folders on homescreen, insane themes that change the entire look or even a different homescreens all together (Pogoplank), landscape homescreen, mobile terminal, file explorer, toggles,an "app store" with only cracked apps...blah blah blah..the list goes on and on..
point being is that an out-of-the-box iPhone really cant be compared to an Android device, but once you jail break its a level playing field-from a user stand point.
i said **** in a thread once and got given out to haha you make one called i phone rape and are still going strong... kudos!

Apple never would accept it to the App Store like they did it on Opera
I was curious and thought this would be kind of a neat app. Is there an app that I can use to turn my GTab into an external/second monitor for my laptop? If so is it Linux compatible or just Windows? Is it USB or WIFI?
I've been trying to find something like this also.
You could try a remote access app. There are a few to choose from in the market. There are also a few threads here about some of the different options.

I was just thinking of something like this aswell. Is it possible to re-engineer the hdmi-out to take hdmi-in? I'd love to plug my cable box into my tab while i play xbox on the TV (or vice versa) I know there has been no positive progress on hdmi-in with HTC's mini-HDMI implementation. Maybe viewsonic (being a monitor company) has a better possibility? Any dev's feel like taking a crack at it?
iDisplay is available in the android market. works just like the iOS version.
Anyone tried iDisplay on the gtab?
I thought I'd buy it but there are only two bad reviews on their webpage and eleswhere I've read that they do no give refunds. There is no trial version on their site, but their terms of service says that customers are expected to run trial versions before they buy . . .
I sent them a kind message asking them if they truly expect anyone to give them money for basically nothing. But I tried to be nice, and to encourage them to post a trial so I could buy and give them a positive review. Five bucks ain't much, but darned if I'll give it away to shmucks . . .
Anyway, if the app works well, they deserve our support.
My gtab is running vegan5 and I use the HP mini wireless keyboard with both of the office suites available. The gtab is taking place of my laptop and doing a great job of it. To be able to also use it to augment the laptop by giving me more screen real estate would be icing on the cake.
Thanks for posting this thread. I never would have thought if it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll purchase the app. I loaded the XP application and it appears that a virtual server is created which could be the reason for the slowdown.
It would be nice if some of these application developers provided just a wee bit of info that could be used to determine if an app is appropriate or not. I think that the apple market has set a kind of precedent for wishy-washy frivolity that is going to carry over into the android market unless google demands a higher degree of responsibility. The time is now, before the market matures as android tabs and notebooks take over most of our computing tasks, as I think they will.
The apps written for the old Palm devices were held to a much higher standard than a lot of iPhone apps I've seen. But then the Palm devices were oriented towards business productivity and not so much as toy/entertainment oriented as iPhones and iPads. I spent part of the day with my hands on the Xoom tab, and talking to several Motorola reps and Verizon sales people. I must have sounded like an evangalist for the android OS.
If google is listening I'd like to tell them to take their work seriously right now because they could be taking over the entire personal computing market in the near future. Computing, regardless of platform, is not all about entertainment. We in engineering and science have needs that also require more versatile hardware and software. The tegra3 is just around the corner . . . then what? How will all those extra processing cores be made truly useful? I want an android powered tricorder.
My evangelical proclivities are simply gushing forth . . . (in all the wrong places)
Thanks again to the OP for initiating this thread.
I tried iDisplay today. I like it! It is a bit laggy, but works great other than that!
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBD-H8Bhehc
I bought chromecast the day it came out from best buy. Since then I have used it maybe 3 times. It was more of an impulse buy since most Google stuff is awesome.
The fact that I can only use this with Netflix or YouTube is bs. Trying to get local vids to play through chrome browser is hit or miss. Most of the time it just downloads whatever movie I try to play. If I want to watch a local vid from the comp I just turn on the Xbox.
Hopefully Google gets their stuff together and let's ppl stream from the phone to the tv, then I would use it. Until then it will remain plugged into my TV taking up an HDMI port until I need to plug in something that I will use or until Google adds more functionality. And Netflix streaming sucks. Kinda a crappy "bonus" if u ask me.
Not useless, but my excitement has waned significantly. Google seems to be following the GoogleTV mode on this device too, which means we most likely won't ever see it reach its potential, for a myriad of political and monetary reasons. My similarly priced Rockchip MK808 GTV stick has lots of capabilities, but I did have to buy a control point (Lenovo N5902) and it is a bit more fiddly than Chromecast, but the power and capability makes it worth it.
What's with the incessant whining? The product has only been out for less than a month, it's still getting into customers' hands and its development is in progress. The product's capabilities were clear when you bought it (Netflix, YouTube, Google Play and Chrome tab streaming). Wait for progress or return it and save us the drama.

I see a lot of people complaining that this device only does what google said it would do. I don't understand this. When the SDK is officially released and apps start appearing then you will get extra functionality but until then don't complain that you can do exactly what was advertised.
I agree, chromecast is pretty much useless.
Casting from a Chrome browser tab gives me a low quality picture.
I'm back to using hdmi cable.
It will gather dust until someday Google permits Fling to function again.
Or maybe until the next garage sale?
Regards
I'm pretty happy with it so far. Netflix support is great and Play Movies is (in my opinion) the best place to purchase digital movies. Really the only thing it's missing for me is playing *ahem* acquired movies.
I am happy with it so far.
I have never been a big youtube user because i don't like to sit at the computer and watch videos. Chromcasting youtube has been a ton of fun for me over the past couple of weeks. I find it a little easier than using youtube in the browser on my htpc with the keyboard. I experience less eyestrain looking at the tablet in my hands than trying to navigate youtube the screen 10+ feet away.
...but hoping the pace of new casting enabled apps picks up.

Thats funny since the app you loved so much uses the same video compress as the chrome browser. I cant beleive anyone is happy flinging <480p video(as far as i know the 500px width is about the highest quality webm video they've gotten to go to the chromecast. Its a neat tool but not practical for transcoding hidef video(or even dvd)
I agree with the current lack of usability. Hopefully new functions will appear soon.
It does what Google said it would do. More functionality hopefully will come and should come. But I use Chromecast daily for watching Breaking Bad and YouTube for my son

I got mine about a week ago ir less after being on backorder for 4 weeks. I too HOPE we get more functionality from it soon/in time. BUT it has been nice to have for me for the price. My living room big tv has directCRAPtv connected to it which is okay but no other real devices except dvd player and vhs bel8eve it or not (which hardly ever get used).
So for the price it cost $42 shipped even with netflix it is worth thst little money. We have 3 roku's connected in three other rooms with netflix already, Hulu+ and they cost what about 3 times as much and dont do much more than this.
Since we have already seen some PREVIEW apps that shows what it CAN DO I know in time it will have more usage available. Hell I remember when the google market didnt have many apps with my first android device. I kept seeing comparisons (as stupid as they were) about iCrap having way mire apps available. Some things like this Chromecast start off slowly but I bet most apps worth streaming will work soon enough. So for the price I paid I can wait a while for the functionality I want.
I am an adult and have some patience. We have already seen Google response to the local streaming content. So I know in time it will come. So no worries. I probabky wont buy another 1 or more until it has the functionality/apps ready. But for the price and features already it is worth it. I rather watch the netflix on the 72" screen than my rooms 3w inch screens, let alone my tab or phone. Do I watch it on the other devices? Yes. So I feel the difference in the big screen...

No offense to you but a good amount of that "incessant whining" is highly justified. Logitech pretty much has left us with a device that is buggy beyond belief. If I can't do simple stuff like YouTube without having to reformat it every other day then it's a fail in my opinion. Aw well once I can get my hands on the MiniX Neo X7 then I'm done with the Revue once and for all.

None taken...I felt your pain for a few weeks before throwing in the towel on that product (ow, the pain of early adopter). My point is that we've 'been here before' with some Google widget that fell short of its promise, owing to a too-early, 'not ready for prime-time player' (nod to the SNL oldsters out there) and disorganised messages about updates and direction of development. If they're hunkering down in attempt to curry favor with big media companies (learned a lesson from GTV?), we're in for a long wait, and likely a hampered SDK, Still, I like what I've seen from these third-party devs (Bubble, ALL/Air, etc.), and hope we see a quick release and uptick on 'indie' dev that doesn't necessarily promote Google's own agenda.
edit: I'm curious why you prefer the Minix X7 over a recent MK Rockchip stick?
What is useless is this thread. Please remember this is a developers forum and not a complaint site. Unless you have something that contributes to development do not create threads.

Since your phone can already stream these and downloaded YouTube videos placed in the Movies folder look excellent in the GVR, what's the roadblock? Why not just apply whatever algorithm to the streaming video the Movie folder applies to stored video?
It's all already in there, they just need to put the pieces together.
Once this is available the usefulness of this device will skyrocket.
Although unofficial, it's here in beta form. Link Here Haven't tried it myself but the comments on the app page seems to indicate some people having success. I think it will play pc games and show your windows desktop as well.

This seems very cool and like an excellent possible answer; however, I can't figure out how to launch it from within the GVR. The SBS screens play perfectly on my phone but the second I place it in the GVR that disappears and the app is not listed in my Library. What's the secret?
Hmmm, playing Hulu on this the lag is very bad.
Just flip the USB up and put the phone underneath it, so the USB is not plugged in.
This is one way to use any non-Gear VR app.

Ah cool thanks.
Yes, it works but the lag is so bad it is unusable and I can't hard tether so kind of SOL.
lol damn, too bad its so laggy. Glad it's somewhat possible but hopefully we'll have a better implementation in the future.
considering the slow rate at which new stuff is being put out at the moment, i truly hope they do "free" the gear VR a bit from the walled garden approach it has right now.
i can totally understand why a manufacturer will want a walled garden ecosystem in a commercial product in the long run, so while of course as a consumer i dont like that, i can see the rationale behind that from samsungs/oculus' perspective. but then, this is the so called "innovator edition", is it not? they know people hack and abuse this thing anyway, they know we throw anything at it we can find and surely wont just watch a handful of trailers in that fine cinema (so far the number one killer feature IMO).
so one would hope that at least during this "innovator phase", they open this thing up a bit more. like, allow gear VR apps to be used without this silly and cumbersome USB-plugout-hack with which you lose the touchpad and everything. or better even, just allow the user access to the regular desktop. like, a zoomable 2d view of your mobile screen. then, while patiently waiting for new content, we could at least fool around with videos from the playstore, enormous skype video calls and other absurdities, and have this thing be what its sold as at this point: a healthy dose of nerd fun without the assumption that it all makes sense yet

Well said. While this is called the "Innovator Edition" they are now selling it through Bestbuy brick and mortar stores. That means they are looking for public commercial acceptance. As such, opening up the full power of this operational Death Star would make sense. I believe the public would be much more excited if they could watch streaming content in realtime as opposed to downloading multi-GB movies. The technology obviously exists to allow this, they simply have chosen not to.
