Need froyo update - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After I fixed my soft bricked captivate it was reverted back to éclair which I was aware of, I clicked check for updates and my phone found one which I assume would be froyo. I clicked install or what ever and after a minute or 2 the update failed (can't remember what it said) I tried it again and my phone told me I'm able to check for updates in another 23.5 hours. I called att and they told me that they'll call me this time tomorrow for assistance. Is there another way to update to froyo?

If you have your heart set on stock, you'll need to use a program called Kies Mini - it's available through Samsung's site, and that should get you going where you want to be.

Mini Kies is safer than the OTA update that perma bricked many. Once you've modded your phone (rooted, etc.) kiss OTA goodbye, AT&T made it so you can't do OTA updates. I am pretty sure Mini Kies is on Samsung's site download it and follow the instructions.
edit: just looked up you beat me to it, lol, I type to slow!

I have mini on my pc, guessing that's how I got froyo In the first place. So I just hook phone upto pc, open keis and that's it?

That's my understanding. I personally haven't used it, but that sounds right.

[Q] Has anybody had a successful JH7 update thats rooted?

Tried to update fine it completed then rebooted then said "Did not install" but it says I'm using JH7 now. But in no way is the GPS any better...
Exactly the same experience here. I will add that I also did not get the new office application, have not checked for the updated YouTube.
Yes, I had no troubles getting the update. See the following:

Hey guys, I see some of you are bricking or not being able to update.
You can use this to flash to I897UCJH7 OTA.
Use Clockwork recovery to flash it...
Cognition is currently being rebuilt on top of this, deodexed and all that fun stuff.
This flashes the system folder, kernel, and modem.

These have been was posted for awhile now. Use clockwork recovery to flash either of them.
Yes, I was rooted, but I had just done a factory restore, it returned it to factory state, although I still had the superuser app in the app drawer. I then immediately downloaded the OTA update and it installed fine. I had the new youtube and all. So I then downloaded ROM Manager and tried to do a restore so I could get all my apps back, but that F**ked it all up! I have since had to do a odin one click restore and now I cant get the update to go past 50%, so i'm SOL now.
I'm rooted using the stock ROM and did the update yesterday and it installed 100% with no problems. It did hang at 50% for around 30 seconds or more maybe.
Im rooted with all att bloatware removed. It failed at 50%, rebooted and said the update failed. However gps absolutely works now, so apparently whatever it did managed to fix at least the gps. It said jh7 in system info. Battery life still seems to suck though. I cant wait for froyo to screw everything up 1000 times worse than this.

I was rooted with the bloatware removed and with sideloaded i found a new Update.zip that removed the root and the update will download but just says "Preparing". Then says "Update is failed" and reboots says it did not complete.
Im rooted. While I didnt get the extra office app or whatnot my GPS is working at least 50 times better. I am locked onto 8 satellites within 5-8 seconds indoors. (using gps test) Going outside only makes my reception better.
When I initially purchased my captivate it was shakey at best. My OTA update said it failed but im showing JH7 and my GPS is now working well.
like everyone else. I'm rooted with stock rom and the update did not succeed. I'm hoping that when 2.2 is released, it replaces everything regardless of being rooted or not, so that I can start from a clean slate.
i tried to return to stock via odin one-click but that did not allow the update to run.
Rooted, unlocked, and successful update. Via EDGE, no less.
did anyone get it to succeed that left the bloatware removed during the update process?
Just updated got to 100 and failed. It shows JH7 even though I got a notification saying update failed. Now youtube widget is dead and software update doesnt even open anymore.
Update media scanner was running for 20 min thats why nthg was opening. If we flash the update on the web. Would that whipe everythg.

Success for me. Just did the basic root. Still have bloat and no lag fix. Something to consider, I did a reset the day before that took off side loading.
Took about a min on 3g to download, hung at 50 and 92 for about 10 seconds.

Visit the market place search for quick office. See if there is a special version there called Quick office for captivate. There was for me. FYI mine said it failed but the gps is now scary fast, it was always good for me. About 30 seconds. But I just got a no error lock inside my apartment build in 3 seconds.
i was rooted and still am. took oclf off and update succesfull. gonna put oclf back on. is there any dangers of reinstalling oclf again? this would be the 3rd time.

Same situation here.
I don't think people should be getting their hopes up for a 2.2 update anytime soon though. Something just tells me it might be a while if it ever even happens, but that just my speculation.

Keep getting 2.2.1 updates after root. How can this be stopped?

Keep getting 2.2.1 updates after root. How can this be stopped? Its annoying to keep rooting only to get the system updates again and again. I'm rooting with a signed fr91 file. Any way to stop this?

Download 'Quick Boot' from the market and use it to reboot the phone. Then, clear the update notification from the notification menu. The update message should go away for a while (mine lasted a week before it came back).
I'm still somewhat hesitant to upgrade to FRG83 and use SuperOneClick since some people in the thread are reporting problems. I love my phone how it is right now!

Are you and Memnoch30 referring to the post you laid out in another thread? I'm pretty sure you wrote detailed instructions on how to do the manual rage root using adb. Will this method work fine if all I want is to run stock 2.2.1 with root-requiring apps like setcpu and move2sd enabler? Sorry for being such a noob

I just installed 2.2.1 and used the SuperOneClick method to root the phone again. I had to turn the phone off, run the program, and then boot the phone for it to work. I suggest you try this method. It couldn't be much simpler.
Now i keep getting the new firmware update message and i cant seem to turn it off even with the quickboot. Any ideas?
Install the update, root again. Now really, this "idea" is 1 message above yours - what made you post?
Hm i tried to update but failed, could be due to tampering of the build number that I did previously but after that it didn't bug me anymore, at least not for now. Will try the superoneclick one next time. Thanks.
It might be back in several days, but if you've tampered with the system and advanced the build number - it shouldn't appear anymore.
yeah i sure hope so. will know in a few days

Remove root?

I used one click lag fix to root my device and also a one click decripple to enable non-markets apps. Now I can no longer connect to Kies. Not that big of a deal but I like using the tethering feature it offers.
I tried unrooting and recrippling but Kies still says my device is not supported...
What am I missing here?

Is this Kies Mini or the full Kies? The full Kies, if you have the latest version, does not support the US Captivate anymore. There's a thread about it somewhere around here.

Yes, found this out as well after owning my phone for about three hours thinking there was something wrong with it that it wouldn't connect. I would download Kies Mini (or atleast bookmark it) it's good to have when updates come along etc.
As far as unrooting if you used one click root/unroot just connect your phone as the directions say, same as you did to root, only click the unroot button this time around...
BE WARNED that when I did the unroot using the one click my phone rebooted and I no longer had my background, it was EXTREMELY slow, the notification bar at the top was missing, also I had no network connectivity. To fix all that I had to do a factory reset when it booted up into recovery mode, instead of selecting "install packages". Maybe I was supposed to do this? I have no idea just telling you from my experience I would be sure to have everything backed up before you try and unroot, incase factory reset is needed... however like I said I am not sure, maybe it was just my phone.
Thanks guys. I'm relieved and slightly ticked with att. I really liked being able to use tethering without paying the extra monthly fee, by I can only assume that's what att caught on to... It was full Kies to answer your question. Don't know what mini Kies is. And I used one click lag fix, not one click root. I've been having problems with random shutdowns but nothing major. They need to hurry with an American version of Kies. I can't stand not being able to back up my phone. Again, thanks guys.

12/16/2010 Captivate update. What is it?

Hi guys, I am a tmobile user so I don't have a captivate, but I do own a vibrant, nexus one, and nexus s.
I rooted my buddy's captivate a little while back. No custom rom or anything, just root, custom recovery, and such.
He just called me today and said he has a notification for an update and wants to know if he should get it. I told him no for now and I'll find out what it is.
So any of you captivate users get an update notification today 12/16/2010? What is it? Froyo? Is it safe to update with root and custom recovery?
No update afaik. It's probably jh7.

Ok so I just called him and he has f*3 I think he said? I don't even remember what he said but it was f something. Not jh7.
I guess would bring me to the question of whether we can just let the ota run it's course or if i need to take him back to stock first. Any thoughts? I'll call back and find out what exact version he is using if I need to. I'm kind of tired right now and forgot what he said.
Stock would be jf6 and the only ota the Captivate has received is jh7.
Edit: You should just flash a froyo rom imo.

Do you know if i need to unroot and go back to stock recovery to update to jh7?
Ya he has jf6, just heard back from him. What is a stable everyday use 2.2 rom I should suggest to him? I'm guessing 2.3 will be ported soon too.
So no one knows if I have to unroot and revert the recovery to stock in order to get jh7 update safely? Currently on jf6 rooted with clockworkmod.
I've seen as others have also reported that if you have ever rooted your phone the OTA update to JH7 will fail. The phone will get to 50% in the update and fail. It could possibly even brick.
you would need to use the odin 1 click to update your buddies phone then re root it.

I had been running the leaked Froyo and went back to stock. My OTA to JH7 always failed at 50%. I had to use Kies (what a piece of crap software) to finally get back to out of box. I had to return during 30 day for a continually crazy search button.

bricked a phone using odin....what went wrong?

I'm not new to this sort of stuff either. I used odin one time on my phone with no issues what so ever. my wife just had to make a warranty claim on her phone and we just got the replacement, asked her if she wanted me to root and put cognition on and she said sure
Well it had stock 2.2 on it and it wouldn't install clockwork recovery. upon reading that it was the update causing the problem I figured id just use odin to take the phone back to 2.2. I used a brand new charge cable I've only had for 3 weeks and things started fine but eventually the screen went black and odins progress bar stopped moving... 15 mins went by and nothing was happening... so I knew it was messed up and I unplugged it...
And $125 later I have an ins replacement on the way. Understand that I've been doin this for six months and this is the first time I've ever had a problem... so what happened? major hit to my confidence here!

Your prob is due to the new phones that come with 2.2 don't always work with one click Odin. Should use the recovery work around for it instead
should of known....ugh... wish I would of known this yesterday I would of been $125 richer and minus one angry wife. What about my phone now? its runing cognition 4.4.2. In light of what's happened I'm thinking about going back to stock myself and staying there... Will odin work on my phone or is there another way?

you could use the Odin one click for JH6, that'll take you back to eclair and you can use the Kies mini to update to 2.2 KB1
or...
you could use full odin to flash the 2.3.3 basic theres a great TUT for it. let me grab some links...

And I wouldn't lose to much confidence over it. If you look at some of the "big shots" they usually have hard-bricked a captivate.

What happens if your running a gingerbread rom with updated bootloaders and you decide that you want to go back to froyo and elair. Is your only option odin one click to restore the bootloaders?, what if your captivate is one of those unlucky ones that like to brick with odin one click? Would you be stuck on gingerbread?
You can use 2.2 roms with gb bootloaders, they are backwards compatible. Just make sure there are no bootloaders in the rom you flash.

Wait so if i flashed gingerbread bootloaders and my phone is not compatible with odin one click, is there no way to get back onto froyo/eclair bootloaders? I understand that you can still flash froyo roms without bootloaders but you can always make a mistake and flash froyo bootladers bricking your phone.
You can use the regular JH6 flash back just not the one with the three button mod, this is because the three button mod replaces 1 out of 2 bootloaders and they won't match but the JH6 only replaces both (or none not sure) and they do match

Check stuff from studacris on this forum. He's very knowledgeable and helpful. I saw somewhere where he wrote about using odin one click to flash stock with any build. You'll get a bootloop, or a soft brick, and then put in download and flash the jf6 secure with odin. That way you have boots and stock. Don't quote me on any of this. I'm going off memory and might have some of this wrong. Don't want anyone mad at me for the wrong info. Just read into his posts, before trying any of this. You'll definitely learn a lot.
