Is it possible to make a rooted captivate show 4g instead of 3g

The icons? Yeah as long as its deodexed

And its possible to actually get At&t 4G speeds with an i9000 based rom/kernel/modem
no. hardware does not support 4g.
you can however get hspa on I9000 modems, which is up to twice as fast as regular 3g.

technically ATT doesnt have real 4G, so HSPA is pretty close to what ATT calls 4G
Okay how do you flash clockworkmod on 2.2 ive done it before just forgot

I am aware that T-mobile uses different 3G bands than does ATT. Most phones when unlocked are left to crawl on edge and cannot get 3G speeds when switched to another carrier. Being as the Captivate and Vibrant are essentially the same phone, would this be an issue. I've been on the G1 since it came out and I really don't like the iphone look of the vibrant. Was planning on getting a Captivate and unlocking, but not if I'll loose 3G.
Can anyone running an unlocked Captivate tell me if they're getting 3g on t-mo??
I would say no.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I believe it was engadget that said the Captivate can get t mobile 3g speeds but not vice versa.
Nope you can only get 3G on the vibrant unlocked to att not the captivate you can only get EDGE speeds on tmo with the captivate.
So basically:
Vibrant: tmo 3G
Att 3G
Captivate: tmo EDGE
Att 3G
So yes it might be an issue for you lol

Ah well that sucks then. Oh well let's look into that G2 then

Doesn't look like a bad phone but I wouldn't trade my vibrant for it lol if you want a phone worth getting wait for the glacier.

Only thing I really don't like about the galaxy s's is lack of trackball. .. I really use that alot. Also physical keyboard is a plus while not a must for me.
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
I hear you on the track ball. I almost went with the HTC Aria for that reason. But the Samsung GS phones are just so damn cool it's unbelievable! Really...... get the TMO version of GS and if you miss your track ball after 2 weeks then exchange it.
Can we just flash the LTE Modem or will we have to get new phones?
our phones do not have the required hardware to go 4g. i could be wrong but i doubt it. but who cares, by the time at&t actually gets a real 4g, we should all be ready to upgrade.
LTE and HSPA are different. As long as HSPA is pushed then we can go to the max of the phones hardware.

Another amazing post. They walk among us.
Was your old EDGE speed phone capable of getting 3G speeds? X-(
Of course ypur going to need a new phone with a 4G sim card.

What are the max speeds on HSDPA/HSUPA? And just how much are we going to miss?

Miami if you're not going to be helpful in Q/A then why post?
For 3G/4G you need to talk tech not blanket terms it would be easier to know what exactly you are asking.
HSPA+ LTE are the competeing tech one being a new tech (LTE) and one being an advancement of current tech (HSPA+).
Captivates can do um 7M using HSPA (double check gsm arena or the wiki or the manual for the numbers) so any upgrade to the network the device will top out at the max speed the device can support.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Max speeds for HSPA are theoretical. TMO said they would push it up to and over the 50M level while currently upgrades to networks have it at 14-21M though because of the way it works you will not get those speeds real world.

Just pointing out the obvious.
Is there a way to get AT&T's "4G" network on the Captivate. Yes i meant to put apotraphoes around the 4G cuz its crazy slow compared to Verizon's 4G network!

i think most of the latest i9000 modems/roms have hspda enabled
Im on MIUI, so they have to be CWM 3.X.X.X/4.X.X.X compatible

Huspa is not 4G. Huspa+ is "4G". Att only gives Huspa support for the Iphones Captivates are blocked from that by default. IF you use a I9000 Gb rom you unlock Huspa support on your phone.
To clarify its 3G->Huspa->Huspa+

well...when you compare it to verizon, you should just give up....
att is not anywhere close to verizon when it comes to any kind of speed. tmobile's 3g is faster than att 4g

That of course all depends on location. My friend's my touch 4g is always slower then mine on speed test.

So with my stock modem, i was getting 4G, but i kept getting dropouts making me have to turn on airplane mode and turn back off to get signal, and after changing my modem, im not getting that issue, but it just stays on H+ and not 4G.. Now in my house i would get full 4G coverage, so i know its not becuase i have no 4G coverage... Is there anything i can do that makes LTE the main signal, being toggled from an app or something like that?
Thanks

4g isn't activated on all Optus plans. So unless you have it on yours you won't get it automatically. Having said that I used to be able to get 4g on Optus using a Telstra modem. That doesn't seem to work anymore. Maybe they caught onto me

Im not the one to ask really cuz im on a business plan which doesnt give me 4g. Saying that for ages I was using a Telstra modem DVALI5 and I pretty much got 4g all the time. If I put an optus one I'd get no 4G. But thats what you get when 4g isnt enabled on your plan I guess. It doesnt seem to work for me anymore. No more 4g
*Edit* As I said that I just got 4G again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010116 - That post has a whole heap of modems you could try

I have found something that has worked for me. If you go into more settings, mobile networks, network operator and manually select Optus when it comes up I'm the list. I've tried this twice now and both times it's connected straight to 4g

i may not explain this right, but it has something to do with how its coded. u still get 4G but just shows on 3G. there is a patch to show it back as 4G

HSDPA is "3.5G" and therefor some roms classify it as 3G, some roms classify it as H, some roms classify it as 4G.
There is a zip file floating in one of the rom threads that appends the 3G icon into a 4G icon, but it's only cosmetic, there's no actual difference in speed for any of the roms, it's just which icon it shows.
interesting prompted me to look into the difference in cellular data tech didn't know there was a difference before
