When browsing the web if I press the home button or go into another app and immediately back into the browser all of the tabs want to refresh, even if there is only one tiny html file open. I have read about many people having this problem on different android devices but it never gets much attention. I am not clear what the issue is, can anyone give me a little bit more info?
I currently run an up to date Serendipity 7 on my Captivate and use Dolphin HD although this happens in the stock browser. Never tried any others. I have run many roms on this device and all of them have had this problem, although some more sporadically than others. With the latest Serendipity it happens like clockwork. I don't use a task killer, the browser doesn't close.
Sounds like a ram priority issue, cache not being written to disk or something. Is this general to the kernel? Is there a browser available that saves pages to disk until you've navigated away for a while? Why do most people not have this problem? Where should I post this so it gets the proper attention?
First post, longtime lurker, this issue is making me mad.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why our browsers have to reload the page even though you are just going "back" one page. For example, if I visit Gizmodo, then go to engadget, then back to Gizmodo, my browser has to reload the page instead of using the cache. It seems as if the cache is barely used (granted the reload is a little quicker, but not much).
Is there a tweak or program that can make this better? It is really frustrating, especially if you are trying to browse a page and accidentally hit the wrong link, which requires you to fumble for stop and oft times requires a reload (this is one reason I miss the Hero browser, because it had a stop button in the address bar).
Hmm, I've noticed this as well. Perhaps Android thinks you need to refresh the page? I know with apps like Opera Mini, pages back (somewhere around 10) are completely stored which is a very nice feature, but as to why Android doesn't do this, is a mystery .
I know the larger files, like images and chunks of text, are saved to the cache, but not whole pages. That would get pretty big after a while, and would slow down the browser because of access times. It's the time the Browser takes to draw the page is what's creating the lag. Look at Opera Mini again, the page loads instantly because it's zoomed out first, then you zoom in.
try "steel" browser.
@ phuthanvinh: I have tried "Steel", but it really isn't any better.
@lukekirstein, yeah, that is one nice thing about Opera. It loads cached pages almost instantly in most instances. When I need quick information, I always turn to Opera. If I want to browse for pleasure, then I use the Android browser.
It would be awesome if a Developer could implement some type of Webkit add-on that forces cache of the whole page.
I just wonder if the "lag" is not caused by redownloading, but rather stems from Android using software-based graphics decoding instead of using the onboard graphics chip. At least that is what I have heard.
I have the same issue and it's very annoying when I'm using google reader!
Have you find a solution?
Does anyone have a solution to prevent android browser to reload pages already load in a tab after I come back from another tab?
Maybe im expecting too much:
When I press gallery, almost 1/3 of the time only 1 or 2 categories come up and no thumbnails. Then i exit and press again and a few more things show up. Then i exit again and usually the 3rd time or so the app opens properly.
Also, about once every 2 weeks i press an app and it opens a different app. And this happens with multiple apps. The only way to fix it is to reboot.
I dont use a task manager
I reboot the phone every couple of days
I wipe the phone about once every 1 or 2 months
Is one of the above practices ruining my device?
I bought the phone and i havent done anything custom to it. Why does my polished 2.1 firmware work like a 5th grade science experiment?
Have occasionally noticed that the gallery app does not pick up all images and categories... something with the media scanner... try using the media scanner in the dev tools app or unmount and remount ur sd card...
Never had any problems with apps opening wrong apps... this is very strange... I have no idea why this is happening and quite frankly, I can;t think of anything which would serve as a possible solution!
Occasionally I've had the latest picture taken not show up in the gallery, but that's it. Stock O/S is great.
Never had it open the wrong app.
I don't run a task killer, don't reboot & have never wiped.
About the app opening the wrong app thing I guess its good news if I'm the only one. Is it possible that I've downloaded an app that is causing it? Or is it more likely an OS issue? it seems a little cheesy that the phone does this, if I could fix it without rebooting that would be a step in the right direction...
Likely an app you downloaded, or just something a little off about the flashing of your update, or a bad RAM memory block at the wrong place.
As for the gallery, I thought I had that issue a bit too, but I noticed that more than anything it just takes a really long time to open fully if it has been kicked out of the cache.
As for the original question posed in the thread title, Android is still Beta in a lot of ways. 2.0/1 is a huge change in many ways from 1.6. It sounds like 2.2 is going to be a bit of a change as well, but instead of changing nearly everything, it is going to build of 2.0/1 plus add in some changes. I am willing to bet that until the release after Gingerbread (the OS after 2.2, aka FroYo), not sure what the "H" release will be codenamed will we see an OS that isn't "Beta" in enough ways for me to call it non-Beta personally... then again, so far Android is less buggy than windows mobile, better than Blackberry even, and on par with iPhone OS, if not better in these regards.
Just like an OS for a computer, same holds true for a smartphone, there are going to be bugs, there are going to be bad programs/apps, and so forth.
I think you should wait for FroYo, if Android still doesn't meet your standards, root and flash some of the custom ROMs. Enom is very stock like, but fixes many of the little bugs, as does Cyan, although with Cyan you do get a few more bugs in some of the development apps and what not.
Just a thought, but maybe you're suffering from the occasional wacky touchscreen issue?
So it's not that it's just opening the wrong app, but the screen is registering a touch in a different place, it's usually most noticable when typing. If it is that, then a simple lock/unlock will solve it, no need for a reboot.
hi everyone,
with the G2 coming out next month, I think this is gonna be my last attempt at getting my G1 working acceptably.
for those of you that would like to skip my sob story/history, you can skip to the next paragraph. i've had a G1 since july 2009. even though i do love it and android, the thing has constantly run horribly for me. constant lag, a history of force closes (although lately none of that luckily), lots of freezing, restarts etc. i've gone thru tons of different roms, currently on e-Xtreme 2.1 version 1.3. had lots of experienced people from these boards help me with flashing, setting up, reflashing, flashing again, setting up again, formatting my sd card, trying different setups, unrooting and rerooting. we've tried all different kinds of things to get me running well. i'm also at this point using NO widgets except the google search bar and the power widget included in 2.1. when i go to running services all i have is android keyboard, quick search box, gtalkservice, twidroyd, cm updater (impossible to shut off it seems), and setcpu. still i get constant lag from everything from opening messages, to opening websites, to getting back to the home screen, to pretty much everything. forget about loading the camera, it can take like 15 seconds sometimes! i frequently use cachemate to clear my cache. honestly right now the phone is working pretty much the best it's ever worked, but its still awful. also sometimes when i get back to my homescreen my icons don't show up. it's actually bad enough that sometimes i will just not bother doing something i wanted to do cause i dont feel like dealing with it lagging and/or freezing up. and forget about widgets. haha.
ok so, you may or may not have skipped all of that, but at this point, i want my phone to run better in a last ditch effort to maybe be able to stick with the g1 until my full contract is up in july 2011. if not i'm doing the early upgrade and reupping my 2 year contract and getting the g2 next month... what i'm wondering is maybe theres an app i have installed that's eating up memory in some way and is a known issue. i've searched around but haven't found anything about these, and rather than sit here and delete each one, one by one, waiting to see if the phone runs better, i figured i'd just type out a list and see if anyone knows of any known issues with any of these... so here it goes:
astro
barcode scanner
cachemate
calwidget
color flashlight
craigsnotifica
dolphin browser
droidball
drop
facebook
frontiers demo
googles
google sky map
gscript lite
last.fm
latitude
lyric droid
magic gem II demo
movies
myspace
nesoid
news and weather
newsrob
orbs knockoff
painting findings
pandora
pingdroid
replica island
rom manager
setcpu
springpad
soduku free
tangram master full
throw a panda
that's it. i really don't think that's so excessive. i mean theres only like 5 or 6 games in there and some of those things like setcpu, facebook and cachemate are pratically required for proper phone usage. and i wouldn't even bother having a phone without twidroyd and newsrob.
so has anyone heard of any known issues with lag caused by having one of these installed and/or one of these doing something in the background that slows stuff down?
thanks so much to anyone that helps. i'm willing to give this one more try. maybe even wiping and reflashing one more time, but after the dozen times i have already, i think i might just be expecting too much haha.
thanks
Dave
Hello everyone.
My Bionic is my first android device and I'm having an issue with the web browser automatically refreshing the page when I leave the browser and then come back.
It will still be open to the page I was one but refreshed and back at the top.
I'm assuming this is a memory savings item so it doesn't have to hold the entire page in memory while the browser isn't active but it's very annoying when I'm partly through a page and having scroll back down and figure out where I was.
Is there a way to stop this behavior? I've seen the ability to add tasks to an "autokill" list that drops them within a few seconds of going inactive but nothing to make something permanent.
Thanks.
This is something I've had to deal with since Android, but it doesn't really bug me, because I can understand why. With my Bionic, this definitely doesn't happen as much as when I had my Droid X, since it has more RAM, but there very well could be some sort of way to get this to work. I know there are some task killer apps (but that makes it completely useless if our on an OS past 2.2+) that will allow you to keep apps in memory at all times, but other than that, I believe it does it just so your phone doesn't get bogged down with trying to keep a whole web page in memory.
That's what I figured.
I was reading a game walk through and then switching back to the game and I had to keep scrolling back down through the massive page to find where I left off.
I wonder if an alternative browser would be any better? I'll have to search the market.
Sorry for the general tone of the question. I've had cm10.1 and now cm11 (a nightly) from just before m11 was released. All the time I've been using these roms I've always had the browser FC (doesn't matter which one, they all FC, losing my open tabs, although I use Dolphin mostly), and also, frequentl, the keyboard doesn't stay up - it just pops up and then closes before I can use it. I hardly ever get shutdowns but the other FC and keyboards problems are so annoying.
Do I have to do something in particular like manage the ram using a utility or is it just the nature of CM11?
Edit : by the way, I did proper clean installs of CM, all by the book. And by the way, the two other Nooks in the house have the same problem, and one of them freezes occasionally.
You might consider using logcat to see if there some common culprits to the problems you're experiencing.

It happens to me too(CM10.1) with every browser without distinction.
don't know if it's because I have the ROM installed on sdcard instead of on emmc but when I used a hybrid build it happened too.
So I'm guessing it's inherent to all ROMs on the nookHD/+ as I don't remember it ever happening on stock nook OS., but it also happens on the HD.
It's really annoying and I wonder if other people don't experience it.
If you don't experience the random browser force close, could you name which ROM/version/emmc/sd/etc you're using?

If you look at my signature you can see that I can only manage at most in the 300 hour range on the nook hd+ till a force reboot. And in between then mostly firefox and background services often fc.
And that's not an android specific problem as my phone is currently over 1725 hours with all kinds of use and no fc's that I can ever remember nor any forced reboots. Even though I hardly use the browser on it, I wouldn't expect it to do what happens on the nook.
[On the nook] Firefox fc's when too much ram is used, [ram seems correct. Never checked exactly] but it comes back up with all tabs, and certain websites won't even load because its too much [or something with that appearance]. Firefox also causes fc's [to happen] on background services..
There are apps for easy access to the ram management settings, but I don't care enough to try [I would buy a new device to improve everything over this old tablet]. Found out first hand though that they don't help when there's a hardware defect.
[Still, all I really know about it is that like yours, my nook hd+ isn't nearly as stable as it could or should be. Never really looked into it.]
