I have a question for the xda community hopefully you guys can help me out: ok so i have been charging my tab in my car using both the cigarete lighter and ac outlet, but i have noticed that it discharges faster than it charges, for example if i am using the gps while charging the tab the tabs battery will drain. On the other hand if i am charging the tab at home on a regular wall outlet it charges fine. In comparison my samsung galaxy s charges fine in the car via the cigarete lighter. I am using the original charger that came with the tab. Any ideas as to why it drains faster than it charges? Thanks.

The Galaxy Tab USB port is wired slightly differently to other USB ports, which results in only getting a trickle-charge from regular USB cables. You need something like this...
http://cgi.ebay.in/USB-car-wall-charger-adapter-plug-Samsung-Galaxy-TAB-/190522553195
I can't vouch for that particular seller, but I have one of those adaptors and it makes all the difference when plugging into anything USB.
Incidentally, when you say you're using the charger that came with the tablet, are you saying that it came with a car charger? I've not heard of that before.
Check the output of the charger. It should put out 2000mA. It should be written somewhere on the charger.

@johncmolyneux
I had read that the port was wired differently. Thanks for the link into ebay for the charger adapter. For the price, it's worth checking out.
I guess I can give it a try

Just got a Tab but I bought it off of someone who couldn't find there charger so I had to find one locally quick and the ONLY store that had it in my area was Verizon but it wasnt a Samsung branded OEM charger, It was a Verizon charger that was suppose to be the same but It doesnt charge via USB and Im wondering if for some reason its not suppose too? It charges USB when the Tab is off but when its on it doesn't? I can only charge it via wall charger when its on? So, is That normal? Or, does the OEM USB charge it while its on and this Verizon one is just messed up? Thanks.
Yeah. I got the Samsung Charger. Charging through USB from a computer is super slow to useless.
Only plugging to a wall provides sufficiently speedy charging.
The Tab is quite greedy for power and using either the USB port on a PC or a low Amp rated Mains USB charger will result in either the phone charging very slowly or not responding whilst under charge.
Charging the Tab using the USB and a PC, well there's nothing you can do about it as the USB standard only distributes 0.5 amps (500 milliamps) of power through each port.
Mains chargers however are rated higher but most common one's only have a Max of 1.0 amp.
What you need is a charger that has the capacity to deliver 2 amps.
Check Google & Ebay, there are a number of chargers available rated at 2 amp.
So usb charging while the tab is on is impossible, right? The charger charges fine plugged into the wall, I just needed to know if it not charging via usb while the tab is on was normal, and from what I get from what your saying is that it is normal, it will not charge usb while the tab is on... thanks.

No, I didn't say it was impossible. I said charging via the USB port on a PC will either be very slow or may not respond whilst under charge, it's certainly not the best method. It's just that with only 500 milliamps of power trickling through the USB port, the second you start to use the Tab in anything that requires a decent amount of power you are not going to get any charge.
The only way I find an ability to charge the Tab under a USB connection when connected to a PC is to let the screen on the Tab turn off and not to touch it. It will still happily communicate with your PC and send/receive data but it will take a much, much longer time to charge that's all.
I gotcha, so...when my tab is on it says not charging in the status but if I let it sleep it actually will just very slow... I understand what your saying and thank u for your time, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the usb cable I got to know to take it back or not...

I charge mine at night via USB to my computer. Starts around 20% by the time I plug it in. I don't power off the tab. Always has a full charge in the am.
I have a double usb cable that is used to power an external drive. I would need a female to female adapter, but this should provide more power to the GT.

Yes, providing the cable you have charges when using with a mains plug then yes, the cable is good.
If however the cable did not charge even when using it with a mains plug then definately you would have a sync only cable.
Thanks, I'm just gonna let it sit overnight with it on sleep n see what happens

To charge through your PC with official USB cable, you should make your own USB "bridge"as short the data wire while insert an 33K om resister between gcc and data wire, an 10K om resister between gnd and data wire.

Yep... I left it on the usb in sleep and it did charge so the cables fine, It just sucks that it doesnt when the tab screen is on but oh well... If theres any solution to fixing this that it charges well from usb then let me know, I know someone just commented about modding the cable to work but theres gotta be a better solution...
Sounds like u bought a stolen tab. No charger or box?

just used a spare double-headed cable from a portable hdd that fortunately has a full size usb plug on the other end. (Most have mini-usb at the drive end)
I use it with a female-female usb adapter and it works pretty well for the PC, particularly on USB 3.0 ports.
I also saw these on Amazon:
amazon dot com/Apricorn-Power-Adapter-Cable-AUSB-Y/dp/B000JIOHDE
I believe Blackberry do one for the Storm as a standard accessory as well
For the car I got a car charger designed for iPad with a USB socket that delivers up to 2.1A
Belkin has the car charger
belkin dot com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=525940
(I should say, I don't actually have this one, mine is a generic brand that also has a 1A usb socket)
cheap chargers....
Just for you to know (and anyone that its taking a look at this old posts) :

and there is blue and black versions, as i saw so far...

no need for all that, just plug it in computer USB and wait it take sometime but it charge, because pc USB are not powerful enough to feed 2A to the tab.

Does anyone know why the One might behave differently on a car USB charger compared to a Galaxy S3?
I noticed my One was charging slowly or not at all when in the car. Using the power stat screen in the SystemPanelLite free version it shows the One is only connected at USB charge power, not "AC" power. However if I plug this same cable into my old Galaxy S3 it shows in SystemPanelLite that it is charging at full AC speed. I tried both the One and S3 default charging cables, no difference.
I'm using a car charger rated to put out enough amps for full speed charging, and it works great with the S3. With my One I tested it just plugging it into the charger that came with it (AC outlet, not in the car) and only then do I get full AC charging speed.
Anyone have ideas on how to get full AC charging speed on the One in the car? Any suggested car chargers confirmed to charge at full speed?
quick charge is disabled. you also need to make sure the charger is at least 1A @ 5V.
On previous HTC phones, I'm led to believe that the data pins on the USB connection are shorted inside the charger, and that's how it detects AC vs USB. It's not AC arriving at the phone of course, in reality it's 5VDC, with "AC" it draws 1A vs 0.5A for USB.
If the USB cable is not wired appropriately, the HTC One will slow charge so that it doesn't draw more than the USB standard 500 mA. Your charger needs to be wired accordingly so that the HTC One knows that the charger is capable of supplying more current, otherwise the device won't pull the extra current to fast charge. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844284 for details.

Will this charger work with the HTC One @ 1A? http://shopamerica.htc.com/product/productpop.htm?prId=41645
Well at this point I'm looking for anyone who can confirm they have a car charger/cable combo working with the One that will charge at or near 1 amp.
I don't think my cable is at fault since I've tried multiple ones, including the AC one that came with the One.
Although my current car charger worked great with my GS3, I guess the One is more picky. So can anyone recommend one that will definitely do 1 amp with the One?
the data function on the car kit cable doesnt work as well...plugged into computer and charges but nothing else (to bad to, liked the length of the cord)

This is right, I had same issues with s3, resolved by buying a genuine Samsung charger. Before my Google maps drained more than it could charge. What's odd is that the s3 charges fine on his cable, unless different pins are shorted on an htc?

Same problem, can only find pathetic skinny fragile things.
I have used this cable without any probs
AKASA part no AK-CBUB05-10BK
bought from CPC order code CS20881
Try a flat ribbon cable, Amazon Uk have them http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...onics&rh=i:electronics,k:flat micro usb cable Various lengths and colours. I use a standard 1.2mtr blue one that I bought last year.
I'm using Logitech cable for charging (got it with the mouse) and Nokia cable for PC (they are always connected, that's why separate cables), so get one of those.
I've only had problems with 3 years old Samsung cable because it kept falling out (it stays in on my SE phone)
I really doubt beefyness of the cable affects charging though. I charged my tabled on just about any cable I've found laying around in the house with no problems
The reason as to why your charge cannot keep up is most likely due to using a charger with lower amperage (i.e 1amp/1A).
As long as you purchase a 2amp charger and compatible usb cable, then you shouldn't have any more issues with draining the battery faster than it can be charged thanks to the 2amp charge rate.

Thanks for the reply guys, this is using the Asus charger that came with the device, just that the original cable split, so I need a replacement.
Have looked at the cables, might get one of the flat ones as they look good.

Paul.
Just to let you know I bought the flat ones and they fit and work really well.
Thanks for the replys all.

Trick is to get a short a cable as you can. The impedance really effects charging. The difference between my stock and a 6' cable is like a 60% drop.

Yes, it should, as long as the vehicle power outlets and usb chargers are operational and provide the correct voltage.

Hmm. Maybe there's something up with my tablet then. I found a YouTube video for the tab 10.1 that showed to plug the USB cord in just slightly to where it makes a connection to charge, but isn't fully inserted to make the data connection. This trick is working for me with the USB PC connection and car charger. It makes me think there should be a way to change a setting or something to always make it charge when plugged in.

Same here. Mine won't charge either
Sammy has been guilty of moving around power lines on their devices so that only there chargers and usb cords will work. Galaxy 2 phones and a few tablets won't charge on OEM or other manufactures cables.
SM-T217A
I don't have the problem. I use a belkin dual port car charger... one is 2.0A ... the second is 1.1A. Charge my note 3 and tab off the 2A plug. I can tell you the tab wont charge on the 1.1A... but the Note 3 will just super slow.
I have a Lenmar dual USB car charger that is 2.1A per port. That "should" charge it, but apparently Sammy blocks it. I wish there was a workaround in the firmware.

I had to try to connect the charger to my phone using a standard female USB-A to USB-C adapter and it worked perfectly.
So to answer your question, "There is, sort of, just buy the adapter you need and use that [emoji846]"

I think that I read somewhere that the reason there is no plug supplied with the charger is that "most people have lots of chargers already". But also I guess it is a way for us to hand over even more money.
I have not tested this fully but I bought a new, third party, charging cradle for my Gear S2 watch and I would guess that stand should be able to charge the watch 3 also as it is a bit bigger than the original Gear S2 cradle.
Tho I have not really looked into the specs either the S2 cradle or the Watch 3 charge pad.
