Just got a Tab but I bought it off of someone who couldn't find there charger so I had to find one locally quick and the ONLY store that had it in my area was Verizon but it wasnt a Samsung branded OEM charger, It was a Verizon charger that was suppose to be the same but It doesnt charge via USB and Im wondering if for some reason its not suppose too? It charges USB when the Tab is off but when its on it doesn't? I can only charge it via wall charger when its on? So, is That normal? Or, does the OEM USB charge it while its on and this Verizon one is just messed up? Thanks.
Yeah. I got the Samsung Charger. Charging through USB from a computer is super slow to useless.
Only plugging to a wall provides sufficiently speedy charging.
The Tab is quite greedy for power and using either the USB port on a PC or a low Amp rated Mains USB charger will result in either the phone charging very slowly or not responding whilst under charge.
Charging the Tab using the USB and a PC, well there's nothing you can do about it as the USB standard only distributes 0.5 amps (500 milliamps) of power through each port.
Mains chargers however are rated higher but most common one's only have a Max of 1.0 amp.
What you need is a charger that has the capacity to deliver 2 amps.
Check Google & Ebay, there are a number of chargers available rated at 2 amp.
So usb charging while the tab is on is impossible, right? The charger charges fine plugged into the wall, I just needed to know if it not charging via usb while the tab is on was normal, and from what I get from what your saying is that it is normal, it will not charge usb while the tab is on... thanks.

No, I didn't say it was impossible. I said charging via the USB port on a PC will either be very slow or may not respond whilst under charge, it's certainly not the best method. It's just that with only 500 milliamps of power trickling through the USB port, the second you start to use the Tab in anything that requires a decent amount of power you are not going to get any charge.
The only way I find an ability to charge the Tab under a USB connection when connected to a PC is to let the screen on the Tab turn off and not to touch it. It will still happily communicate with your PC and send/receive data but it will take a much, much longer time to charge that's all.
I gotcha, so...when my tab is on it says not charging in the status but if I let it sleep it actually will just very slow... I understand what your saying and thank u for your time, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the usb cable I got to know to take it back or not...

I charge mine at night via USB to my computer. Starts around 20% by the time I plug it in. I don't power off the tab. Always has a full charge in the am.
I have a double usb cable that is used to power an external drive. I would need a female to female adapter, but this should provide more power to the GT.

Yes, providing the cable you have charges when using with a mains plug then yes, the cable is good.
If however the cable did not charge even when using it with a mains plug then definately you would have a sync only cable.

To charge through your PC with official USB cable, you should make your own USB "bridge"as short the data wire while insert an 33K om resister between gcc and data wire, an 10K om resister between gnd and data wire.

Yep... I left it on the usb in sleep and it did charge so the cables fine, It just sucks that it doesnt when the tab screen is on but oh well... If theres any solution to fixing this that it charges well from usb then let me know, I know someone just commented about modding the cable to work but theres gotta be a better solution...

just used a spare double-headed cable from a portable hdd that fortunately has a full size usb plug on the other end. (Most have mini-usb at the drive end)
I use it with a female-female usb adapter and it works pretty well for the PC, particularly on USB 3.0 ports.

no need for all that, just plug it in computer USB and wait it take sometime but it charge, because pc USB are not powerful enough to feed 2A to the tab.

I have a question for the xda community hopefully you guys can help me out: ok so i have been charging my tab in my car using both the cigarete lighter and ac outlet, but i have noticed that it discharges faster than it charges, for example if i am using the gps while charging the tab the tabs battery will drain. On the other hand if i am charging the tab at home on a regular wall outlet it charges fine. In comparison my samsung galaxy s charges fine in the car via the cigarete lighter. I am using the original charger that came with the tab. Any ideas as to why it drains faster than it charges? Thanks.

The Galaxy Tab USB port is wired slightly differently to other USB ports, which results in only getting a trickle-charge from regular USB cables. You need something like this...

I can't vouch for that particular seller, but I have one of those adaptors and it makes all the difference when plugging into anything USB.
Incidentally, when you say you're using the charger that came with the tablet, are you saying that it came with a car charger? I've not heard of that before.
Check the output of the charger. It should put out 2000mA. It should be written somewhere on the charger.

Careful. HTC does something funky with the wiring in their chargers and phones such that, when using a non HTC charger, the phone will only charge at 0.5 amp, vs 1 amp with an HTC charger. Net result is that your phone will take twice as long to charge with a non HTC charger. There are several threads on this subject, and I've observed it first hand on my One. The non HTC charger shouldn't hurt your phone though, only your patience...

I've never had an issue.. have had HTC for years now and have gone thru several chargers bought from walgreens and they all seem to work fine. I usually charge overnight anyway so I never time the charge lengths. Ymmv I guess?

I usually charge overnight as well. But I travel a lot, and when I do the GPS - a battery burner - gets a lot of use. What got me started exploring this, was when I saw my HTC ONE battery going in the wrong direction (slowly) while charging in the car while using the GPS. This led me to learning more than I ever wanted to know about HTC chargers and their funky wiring ... Apparently you can get around this by shorting two wires in the USB cable, but I have no intention of trying that!

I don't think the problem is at HTC but the charger you might have. I have successfully charge @ ~800mA (1000mA = 1 Amp)with different chargers ( Asus charger, Samsung charger and a newer palm charger). My new blackberry charger can charge @ ~600mA.
If I use my older palm charger, my Nokia charger, my old blackberry or a dollar store charger, it will only charge @ ~3xxmA.
If you read the spec carefully, you will see most newer *smartphone* charger max @ 1A, and older charger max @ 500mA. (or my BB charger max @ 800mA. )
So it's OK to use non HTC charger, just be sure to read the spec and find one charger =>1A.

Yeah, I can't find anything on eBay or Amazon meet their description. The one works good for me is a Verizon Charger but it cost 35 usd...

That is correct, usb specification is 5v, with 500mA (0.5A) maximum, hence the modified cable you refer to. The simplest way if you don't wish to modify cables is to buy HTC car charger

You can find HTC chargers on amazon that will give you the full 1 amp. Look for older phone models like treo pro or mytouch 4g and they'll be cheaper but work fine.

The charger *should* only provide 2A if the device (phone) request it.
Just thought I would chime in on some observations here. Long story short, when I bought my HTC One, I left the charger in the box and continued to use my multi-port USB charger with 3x1A ports and 1x2.1A port.
When connected to the 1A port, I found it quite strange that my phone was taking 4 hours or longer to fully charge. Also observed the same thing when connected to the 2.1A port. I was thinking that something was up with my phone somehow limiting the maximum charge current.
Anyway, I read a suggestion to use SystemPanel Lite to check for USB or AC power connected and sure enough it was reporting USB power. I remember the case with my Xperia X10 where you have to short out the two middle (data) pins on the cable or in the charger so that the phone detects that it is being connected to an actual charger. I tested it with my old Xperia charger, another generic USB charger, and the HTC charger and managed to get SystemPanel Lite to report it as AC connected.
But here is the interesting part. I have a car charger rated for 1A. Initially it never worked with the Xperia X10 until I opened it up and shorted out the two data pins. It has worked ever since. However, when I connect this to my HTC One, it still reports it as USB connected.
This has got me thinking that there maybe something more than just shorting out the two data pins for the HTC One to detect that an actual charger is connected. Just some food for thought.

As per my post, I tested a generic USB 1A charger (it's at home, but it was one that was supplied with a Netcomm MyZone) and with my stock Sony Ericsson USB 700mA charger, both of which reported as AC connected. There has to be another way that these can be detected as chargers other than a simple short of the data pins.
Tested not to work so far has been an iPhone charger, Amacrox AX025-TACH1, Philips Power Bug, and two generic USB car chargers both with the data pins open then shorted.

unfortunately my nexus 7 original charger has been Burnt Becoz of Charging on UPS Inverter
and i cannot find the Geniune charger Locally
so is there any possiblity i can charge my NEXUS 7 to any other CELLPHONE charger which can charge it to the Same Speed what original does
i bought IPAD3 Charger and that one is charging too much slow need solution

That's because the iPad charger doesn't have the data pins shorted out to enable fastcharge . Easiest way to accomplish fastcharge with your charger, is to buy a charging cable (data pins shorted out, so it is not a data cable:

I use the blackberry playbook charger with no issues.

Yes I know, and that's the reason the iPad charger won't work on fastcharge.
You need to either shortout the data pins of the iPad charger, or use a charger cable with shorted data pins ( a so called charge-only micro usb cable) to make the iPad charger use full capacity (fastcharge mode). There are also cable adaptors for sale that will shortout the data pins for you.

Yep, that one works because it follows the USB standard rules, and not the Apple USB standard.
No iDevice (iPhone/iPad) charger will fastcharge an android phone or tablet without modifying the datapins or use a charge-only cable / adaptor.
The Blackberry Playbook charger is known to work
Get an HP touchpad charger if you can. I can provide empirical evidence that it will actually charge your n7 20 minutes faster than the stock charger. I posted a thread about it here some time ago. "Best aftermarket charger ..." Or something like that.
Plus, my HP touchpad charger hasn't failed to work with whatever device I've plugged into it - idevice or android.

I will suggest the HP touchpad charger for use with the N7... they work great and produce no noticeable heat when not connected... shows good efficiency.:good:
Check Ebay -= just did a quick search and got 131 hits anywhere from 8-20 USD. I"ve bought 2... one is firmly set to be my preferred travel charger for any USB device.

Someone did a in depth look at factory and aftermarket chargers and it came out way better in terms of current provided and cleanliness of power without spikes or dropouts.

That will do the trick - but you don't need another cable if you already have one.
I went with the charger without cable option and got 2 chargers for less than that price. Just have eBay sort the search results by price+shipping and optionally USA sellers only to find a better price without waiting for a slow boat from China.

If the charger puts out less than the tablet needs then it will just charge slower (or not at all if it's really low) and if it puts out more than the maximum the tablet uses the extra will just go unused. Voltage is a different issue.

Having your device plugged into a USB 2 500mA computer port obviously charges slower then a 2000mA wall charger. It would be pretty faulty design if plugging your device into your computer would cause hardware damage.
Man, this really sucks, the Monoprice cable mentioned earlier in this thread is having the same issue I had with another micro USB cable, it doesn't seem to fit into the Nexus 7 snugly, it doesn't seem to go in all the way. (I hope I don't have a busted charging port), It doesn't seem to charge it at all, even with the stock Nexus AC adapter. I'm about to break down and buy the official Google charger again, even if all I need is a new micro USB cable.
I'm using 2 different monoprice cables, one in my car and one at home, and both fit well. Sounds like the port has gotten damaged.

So, I just decided to buy a whole new charger off Amazon. If that won't work and I determine that the micro USB port is busted, I'm not going to be very happy, haha. does anyone know if Google repairs them for a fee?
I use a Playstation Vita charger which seems to charge my N7 very fast. On the other hand, I've tried an old mobile charger also and the battery level goes down whilst plugged into it.
If under warranty and purchased from the PlayStore, yes, otherwise, if under warranty, ASUS.

I'm using Logitech cable for charging (got it with the mouse) and Nokia cable for PC (they are always connected, that's why separate cables), so get one of those.
I've only had problems with 3 years old Samsung cable because it kept falling out (it stays in on my SE phone)
I really doubt beefyness of the cable affects charging though. I charged my tabled on just about any cable I've found laying around in the house with no problems
The reason as to why your charge cannot keep up is most likely due to using a charger with lower amperage (i.e 1amp/1A).
As long as you purchase a 2amp charger and compatible usb cable, then you shouldn't have any more issues with draining the battery faster than it can be charged thanks to the 2amp charge rate.

As long as you purchase a 2amp charger and compatible usb cable, then you shouldn't have any more issues with draining the battery faster than it can be charged thanks to the 2amp charge rate.

Thanks for the reply guys, this is using the Asus charger that came with the device, just that the original cable split, so I need a replacement.
Have looked at the cables, might get one of the flat ones as they look good.

Trick is to get a short a cable as you can. The impedance really effects charging. The difference between my stock and a 6' cable is like a 60% drop.
