Can someone please tell me if I can just download a new rom such as serendipidy 7 or will i have to install new boot loaders first or ?
What is the best procedure for me to use?
TIA, Jeff
If your have never flashed a 2.3 rom (except cm7/miui). You will have flash GB bootloaders, the rom developer should have instructions on how to do that.
Am I correct to think based on your reply "(except cm7/miui)" that these don't require bootloaders?
While cm7 and miui are gb, they don't use gb bootleggers. Therefore, you will still need gb loaders.

Hi all,
I'm new to android and some things I do not understand, for example I have the galaxy captivate with the following characteristic:
Rom Android 2.3.4 I897UCKH3
boog_kh3_kernel3
su-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip
I updated my cellphone using these files, and all works fine but I wanted install a new kernel the last talondev, but after install it I think that my sgs is on soft bricked, displays the logo of AT & T and then starts "loading talon...", but then restarts.
This kernel can be used with the rom? it is compatible? or What should I do to choose a kernel?
Best regards
Talon is I9000 port kernel you are using native I897 rom. Use Samurai, Corn kernel or Boog's kernel. Actually Im not sure there is a corn or samurai kernel for KH3. I know they have it for KJ roms.
I have to find kernels for KH3, right?
Thanks
Correct. Or update to a newer leak like KJ3 as a example.
And I can change to a custom rom? or that such the cm7 rom?
I talk to do this to exit the soft brick and have it back.
thanks
CM7 has its own special instructions. I haven't kept up with it so go to their thread and read. But ya you can change to custom roms like Fusion IX, Fasty and others that are based of a newer firmware version.

You need to flash back to boog kernel. If this does not work it is best you re-flash to stock KH3 with the one-click solution here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Choose the one WITHOUT bootloaders since you already have those on the phone. It is safer that way.
Regarding CM7 ROMs. You must know they are completely different system compared to the normal Captivate ROMs. Read this thread before flashing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978150
Don't get me wrong. THEY ARE VERY GOOD CUSTOM ROMs...absolutely. But you cannot mix and match.....Follow CM7 instructions strictly.
thanks for the replies, I will be reading information about their opinions.
thank you very much , I'll let you know the results.

Why would you send him to the nightly page and not the 7.1 stable current nightlys are a bit broken.
I am not amused by your phones performance
Been running Cog4 for a while now, but figured it's time I upgraded to GB. Ling story short:
What's the easiest way to upgrade my bootloader? I noticed it's a prerequisite for a few GB ROMs I was looking at.
And should everything bug out on me, is there a way to return to a 2.2 based ROM?
Appreciated!
There is a Bootloader package in dev section. GB bootloaders are backwards compatible with 2.1 and 2.2 roms. Also work with AOSP (MIUI, CM7). You can also just flash leakes GB roms that contain bootloaders. All can be done with ODIN and Heimdall.

+1 the easiest way is to flash a one click package with GB bootloaders

Hello, what is the best ROM for ICS on Samsung Galaxy S? I'm fed up of stock ROM being slow and want something fast and want ICS I've never flashed before and downloaded "Onecosmic's ICS Port Android 4.0.3 RC2.11" but don't have a clue on how to start flashing it, as he hasn't made a noob tutorial
Any help would be appreciated.
How about trying teamhacksung's ICS port aka soon to be CM9 rom? Just follow the guide on the first page.

But I'm a noob :-( I don't even know how to root or put CWM on... what ROM would you recommend for noob like me, ICS one or CM7? I Just want something really fast that will make games smoother and that works fully....
Do you know how to flash a kernel via Odin? You will be rooted and have CWM automatically once you flash a custom kernel. I would recommend you to use a custom GB rom, as not all apps are compatible with ICS and more bug free.

oh ok.. is the standard CM7 the fastest ROM then?
In my opinion, no. Perhaps you would want to try the Simplicity rom.

I would guess you are on GB bootloaders, but it doesn't matter which ones you are on if you're going to CM7. I wouldn't worry about it until you flash to something else. At that point you can either just reflash a full package with bootloaders to be sure or try flashing without them and see what happens. You should get a pixelated screen at boot on GB if your bootloaders are Froyo.

Yes, as long as you flashed a GB bootloader to get on GB then that's what you have. Just go ahead and flash CM7
Sent from my (CM9) ICS i897 Captivate
As mentioned earlier, if you want to know, just flash a gb ROM. You'll know if you have the wrong bootloaders as soon as it boots. If you think you may have the I9000 bootloaders, power the phone off and try volume up and power at the same time.
I read some where that froyo bootloader is neccessary for flashing cm7. So if I have ginger bootloader. Will it make problem? ?

Not anymore. It used to be froyo only, but now it works with either. However I9000 GB bootloaders may not play nice.
Ohhhh that's nice to know. So it means I can flash cm7 even if I have gb bootloader? ??
Well, yeah.
Whats the difference between cm7 and cm7 nightly ?
For all practical purposes, nothing. CM7 is compiled nightly (well, sort of, the build bot is currently broken) with updates, new features, bug fixes, etc. Every so often when they get a version stable enough for everyone's liking, they make it an official build. The reason I say there's not really any difference is that the current nightlies are at least as stable if not more stable than the current official release.
181 was the last official nightly released if I remember correctly, but you can find other people who are compiling the updates themselves. The one many of us are using can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347273
thanks for reply guys
ok i installed cm7. and its so good in performance but i m getting battery drain problem. Can i install cm nightly over cm7 ? if yes than how ?

Just download the nightly to your sd card and install it from recovery. And no clue, I have never had any lag with adw launcher. You can try others to see if it helps

Cm7 is going to have worse battery life than touch wiz roms. Its a known issue with aosp roms. They don't contain the closed source hardware drivers. That the tw roms have.
The question is really in the title, what do I flash first when upgrading from darky froyo to ICS, the kernel or the rom?
Thanks!

Follow instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash
They usually don't mention the kernel, only the rom :/

The kernel is pretty much always included in the.zip, if you want to change from the ROM kernel to another, then usually just a case of using a cleaning script, or manually clearing cache/dalvik and a couple of others (init.d & Ns tools usually) and flash away
upgrade 2.2 to ics
You have to burn GB stock-rom 2.3 with odin first !!!
after you finish you need gb kernel like semaphore 1.8 also burn with odin (give the stock root).
and finnely flash the ics rom you wont (with the dev Specific rom Guidelines)

Afaik you don't need gb bootloader to flash to ics, (see slim website) however it is a good idea to in case you want to revert to gb, but in that case it is easier just to flash the boot loader....see nitr8s ezboot thread
Hi, I know it's been a really long time of the thread but what I know ALWAYS FLASH THE ROM FIRST AND THEN THE KERNEL
