[Q] MKV files on gingerbread? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On the original stock Froyo ROM I could play a particular high quality MKV file with no problems.
Since updating to gingerbread it has problems playing.
Any ideas why, or any work arounds?

Try moboplayer from the market. It works a whole lot better and plays mkv's as well as other formats.

Ah, now then, this is the first post I've seen on the issue that doesn't just point me to yet another media player! How do I change these stagefright settings, and will disabling them cause any other issues?

are you talking about streaming mkv or from sd/internal storage? been trying to find a good way to get streaming vids (mkv and xvid) to play over wifi..

I stream xvid ok, don't have any mkv to test with but I have no problems streaming with overcome or cm7 with CIFS manager for windows shares and vplayer as my media player give it a go, ymmv.

the stagefright settings are found in your build.prop under additional build properties
on my tab all settings are set to false except for media.stagefright.enable-http=true

Could you go into more detail please.
I have no idea what you're talking about and I can't find any options to change.

Thanks for this.. vplayer does work great for divx/xvid files.. but doesn't seem to want to even acknowledge mkv's..

if you are rooted, you'll need something like rootexplorer to navigate to the /system partition of your phone. in it there is a file name build.prop. mount the system as read/write enabled and then long press on build.prop and select open with text editor. the settings you are looking for are near the end of the file under "#Additional build properties" and maybe stated as such
media.stagefright.enable-player=true
media.stagefright.enable-meta=true
media.stagefright.enable-scan=true
media.stagefright.enable-http=true
media.stagefright.enable-rtsp=true
you can change them to this:
media.stagefright.enable-player=false
media.stagefright.enable-meta=false
media.stagefright.enable-scan=false
media.stagefright.enable-http=true
media.stagefright.enable-rtsp=false
after editing save the file and reboot your tab. hopefully afterwards you will be able to play mkv's. by default my tab had the latter settings which i added to my o2x cause i had trouble playing mkv's on it. after putting those settings in both my tab and o2x can play mkv's.

Thanks very much for that.
To be more precise, they will play from the start but I can't scan through the file. Do you still think the settings change will help?
I've also noticed that when in the video player app the battery and flight mode icons in the notification bar look just like they did on froyo whereas they have changed for everything else.

video scanning is working on mine.

My stagefright settings were already set as you mentioned above, all except enable-http. Changed that, so hopefully it'll work when I get home to test on my network. If it does I'll be ever so happy..
Woohoo! took me a couple days to get around to it, but streaming mkv's and xvid files works great now. Wish there was a way to avoid clicking on 3 different things first, but small price to pay i suppose.. Thanks!

Try diceplayer v1.5.3
diceplayer use HW video decoder at any containers / audio codecs.
you can play 720p H.264 High + DTS(AC3) with MKV,MOV,MTS,AVI

I installed the player but is there a way to change it to the defaults player for IE so when I go to youtube it doesn't try to load RealPlayer. In the program I looked over all the settings but didn't see one. I also went through and check that it was suppose to handle all file types just to make sure. thanks for any advice
After setting file associations .flv in TCPMP did you soft reset?
Have you installed the flv plugins for TCPMP?
I haven bothered to install RealPlayer on my Kaiser, it is on my Wizard, and I haven't missed it yet. TCPMP works fine for me on Youtube. If you unistall RealPayer does the incorrect file association recover?
Launch TCPMP
Select options, settings, select page.
A pop up allows access to all the settings including File Associations.
(s)He's talking about m.youtube.com loading RP.
Sorry, misunderstood.
I did set all the files assoiciations up. I also did a soft reset. I did install the flv plugins. Because the tilt comes preinstalled with Realplayer it isn't even listed as a program that can be removed.
any more ideas? Thanks for your guys help.
Yesterday I installed TCPMP on my Tytn II. I wanted to see if there was any improvement over the reported jerky playback of .wmv files. Unfortunately it could not read the .wmvs I tried to play and reported that it did not have the right codes. I thought that TCPMP would have the codecs 'out of the box'.
In any case I've just installed and tried Pocket Player but the jerkiness was still there. I increased the cache in the options but to no effect. I would like to try Core Player but can't since they do not offer a trial/demo version from their site.
As I understand the jerkiness of video playback is due to an OS bug and might be resolved with a ROM upgrade from HTC. However has anyone found a temporary/permanent solution?
Well I uninstalled and reinstalled TCPMP and left the defaults setup and it seems to work now.
Do you just get the jerky ness on wmv files? I have't loaded any yet cause I am waiting for my 4gb card in the mail.
I get the jerkiness to some extent also with .mp4 and .3gp files. I'm no expert on audio/vide/codecs etc. I just want to watch videos on long trips.
I've also tried encoding just a single chapter from a DVD and placed this in main memory. Same jerkiness so it's nothing to do with transfer rates from the MicroSD card.

Guy go in the file Association area and check mark all the blocks, now your TCPMP/PLAYER will be the DEFAULT player, if this does not work PM me and I will send you the added software you might need!
I used TCPMP and now Core Player, they work very smoothly. I use RAW Framebuffer and encode my media conservatively 320 x 240, 96-128k stereo (it still sounds great even at 96kb) and a video bitrate around 475kb. I have to say it looks very sharp and clear on the 8525 and now my Kaiser

What type of files do you play using TCPMP and/or Core Player, and what app do you use to encode them?
Full length movies usually from my DVD's, or MPEG2 files from Replay DVR and PC Based SageTV, encoded with PDXE to Divx format.

If that doesnt work (I havent tried doubletwist) maybe one of these apps might work.
I dont have my captivate yet (never owned an android phone before either) so let me know if any of those work out.
if you manually add your media to your device, you can arrange it however you want....beauty of android=its yours to do with what you want

im using Handbrake to convert videos to captivate suitable
can anyone please mention the settings in the handbrake??

By videos do you mean movies? If that's what you're doing then I use DVD Decrypter to rip them to my laptop then AutoGK to convert them to XviD. I just leave all settings default and set the size to 1CD (700MB). The movies play fine and it's not like it's taking up too much storage space.
I play .avi due to its file size.
Otherwise I don't miss itunes except for pod casts.
Now I can put what media I want on my sdcard and don't worry about it.
You get used to it.

The fact that people want junk programs (especially one like iTunes, which loads a chunk of it's bloated self at startup and slows your computer down) is mind boggling.

Try isyncr. It doesn't require a program on your computer and will sync play-counts and ratings back and forth. I really missed iTunes myself and this helped with the transition.

Isyncr is by far the best especially if you add the wifi tool for a buck I think...never even have to plug phone into computer just walk into house and click on wifi app and auto syncs what you select
Edit....Of course that requires a wireless network

hey can u please lemme know from where can u download .apk files for apps and games? ? ?i just learned how to do sideloading....
Put me down as another iSyncr supporter. I like using iTunes to manage my music library, but not lock down my device.
In handbrake, I've had good success with using the default iPhone preset, but changing the horizontal resolution to match the source video (up to 800). A high quality 2hour movie runs about a gig that way. Medium quality is about 400mb.

[Q] Video/Music?

Alright, so I'm running Nookie Froyo (customized?) and Sometimes my SD card has problems mounting but I just pop it in and out and it goes.
However, Gallery and Music are not picking up any of the music I have stored on there.
Similarly, when I use Astro to play most of the videos I have, it FC's. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Off the top of my head I'd say for the video issue verify the format is compatible (h.264 baseline with a resolution at or below 854x480 for example) and short of that use ROM manager to fix permissions, reboot into recovery and wipe cache and then check again.
On the custom emmc 0.6.8 build I'm finding that the best thing for me is to re-encode my videos using handbrake with the custom preset found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894165
I've tried various video players and have settled for just using the stock player and uninstalling all others. I sometimes get video rotating into portrait mode which I resolve by jumping into Youtube app and running a video while rotating into landscape mode and then jumping back into gallery. Seems to often kick the movie player back into playing in landscape as it's supposed to.
As for music, I haven't tried loading my SD card with MP3's so I can't comment on that.
Hope this helps.
Hey thanks, helped me out too haha.
Does HandBrake have a batch convert/process option?
If it doesn't, I need a program that does.
I used freemake to do the conversion for my nook, and it worked great. But, you do have to be careful what video size, audio and video codecs, bitrate, and file extension that you pick.

It has. Press "Soucre->Add folder", all video files will appear in title list. Simply switch titles and add them to queue.
Honestly, call me dumb. But I clicked "Source> Add folder" Then Start and it only converted 1 file.
EDIT: Sorry ,I figured it out.

Video Playback in Nookie Froyo?

I'm new to Nook, please don't blame me if it's a stupid qustion...
Got my Nook yesterday and installed customized nookie froyo 0.6.8
Everything else is fine but the video playback.
From the instructions Froyo on Nook should have video playback capability and actually I went through the Quadrant test. However when actually playing videos, it seems all the video players I tried(Rock, Mobo, Vital) were soft-decoding. Also any app that try to use the system video playback feature will not work, ex. mVideoPlayer, Asphalt 5 and so on.
I checked the original nookie froyo and there is no system video player either. Why?
Because the Nook's default player is VERY picky. Until I purposefully encoded files to work for it, I could only get the softplayer to work. Here is a file I made, if it works you know that is your problem:

Handbrake has worked the best for me in my experience. There is a thread here in the forums re settings that produce files that play very well using the Nook's hardware decoding.

There's no video player app per se but if you go to gallery you can click on a video file and it will play it back.
Look for the handbrake preset thread as has been stated. Any videos that you're attempting to play back that have a resolution higher than 854x480 will need to be re-encoded to that resolution or lower, preferably at H.264 BASELINE. Hardware acceleration on the nook is very limited, which is the reason you'll have issues with various apps as you're experiencing. It is what it is.
Having said that, lower res videos like TV shows encoded in xvid in avi format play back fine for me using Mobo Player on nookie froyo. If it's HD though (720p or higher) forget it . .

MKV

Im using the stock rom but i cant play mkv files with any video player wtf? None of the players can see the mkv files only my 3gp and mp4 files show up.
your point being????????
Maybe he means "can't" ?
Yes i meant cant.
try this, you will need somthing like root explorer to put it in system/app if it doesn't install automatically.
it's the newest one pulled from Gr2, and it defo works because I have recently watched the Khan fight which was in .MKV 720p
Tried this in CM7 and it do work indeed

Im using the latest stock rom yes.
Well, to be honest, most mkvs don't play well at all on lateststock rom, you need gingerbread for that. Those with header compression/header stripping enabled don't play at all, you can check this using for example mediainfo ( http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net ), and even those without it usually lag horribly and/or crash the media player for me. So you're not missing a working feature.
Ok now iv got a 720p mkv video running using mx videoplayers, runs pretty well both sound and video, some very very minor video distrotion on occasion but nothing serious, stock video player says unknown video format or something.
I thought the lg video player was supposed to support mkv natively.
it does support it natively. but as stagefright is enabled by default, mkv playback is broken. disabling it allowed me to play mkv's on stock player. i had to put the following strings in my o2x's build.prop to make it work.
media.stagefright.enable-player=false
media.stagefright.enable-meta=false
media.stagefright.enable-scan=false
media.stagefright.enable-http=true
media.stagefright.enable-rtsp=false

Really? Because mine plays mkvs (rather poorly) without any modifications to anything, I'll try this later and see if there is a difference!
Lets clear up a few things here
support for the mkv containter are fully supported by the native LG mediaplayer in the latest firmware (v10c/d), but not in the previous firmwares.
If one has the latest firmware, then nothing needs to be done to enable mkv playback.
If the native LG mediaplayer do not show mkv files in the media list at all, then one does not have the latest firmware !
If the native LG mediaplayer do show the mkv files in the media list, but complain when trying to play the files, then the mkv files contain some video or audio format which is not supported. For instance are DTS audio not supported, thus trying to play an mkv with a DTS audio track will not work. Propably AC3/DD are not supported either, or flac. An mkv can also contain a non supported videoformat. In other words, if the files do not show then its wrong firmware, if they do show but dont play, then its not because mkv are not supported but because some video or audiotrack inside the mkv are not supported.
support for mkv are not a codec question, since mkv are just a container and not a video format. Codecs are used to decode video (and audio) formats. Parsing containers like mkv are just a matter of having a parsing filter and support for the extension .mkv in the media build properties. Codecs are used to decode the video and audio formats inside the container after the parsing filter has parsed the container and send the video and audioformats to the decoders.
The typical videoformat inside mkv are h264/mpeg-4 (but can be many other formats also), this format has allways been supported on all firmwares but only inside mp4 containers up untill the latest firmware, the only thing new in the latest firmware in this regard, are the addition of a parsing filter for the mkv container.
For best playback of mkv (and the h264 video inside) only the native mediaplayer should be used, because the hardware acceleration from the Tegra chip is needed and most third party media players do not have full access to this hardware acceleration Instead they use software decoders which are not as effective. A few third party media players do have hardware acceleration, but they dont offer any better playback than the default LG mediaplayer because when hardware acceleration is used then it makes no difference which media player interface is used to call it. The playback quality will be identical, therefore there are no point in using third party mediaplayers except for playing other types of videofiles which the native mediaplayer do not support at all, but may be supported by the software decoders in the third party player. But for supported files the default LG player will play as good or better as third party players.
If playback of an mkv containing a typical h264/mpeg-4 videotrack plays poorly, with video distortion/pixelation or other problems, then its because the video has been encoded with to high encoding levels. Most pirated 720p/1080p rips in mkv that people download from the internet are encoded using higher encoding levels than what is supported by the Tegra chip - typically they are encoded in profile level [email protected] and the Tegra chip only support up to [email protected] for 1080p and possibly [email protected] for 720p
If playback are poor because of to high encoding profiles have been used, or the mkv contain some non supported video/audiotrack, then the only sollution are a reencoding of video and/or audiotrack to a supported format using a supported encoding profile setting.
read more on h264 and encoding profiles here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC
and use media info to get information about your mkv files regarding video and audio formats inside, and which encoding profile has been used to encode video with
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/
Thanks for the informative post spawndk!
