[Q] COMPLETELY NEW TO THIS STUFF!!!(Galaxy S) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Helllo there,
i recently installe Stock 2.3.4 XXJVQ having only used odin for the first time, however i like the idea of having a new ROM on my phone whenever i like, firstly...
My galaxy s has no custom rom, cm7, custom kernel or anything like that, it is completely stock, what is the safest and quickest way to root 2.3.4 jvq and start installing custom ROMS.
Also i know that if i (somehow) manage to brick my phone i can just install XXJVQ stock again, but ive seen various threads which say they have just installed a new rom and bricked their device and now they cant get into recovery or download mode, how does this happen and is this common?
Thanks.....

read all the FAQ`s, and forum rules for a start point, this will give you the confidence to proceed, if you follow instructions from whatever thread you chose to use then generally you wont have any problems, the sgs is very hard to kill, but it is a learning process so do the learning and start simple with maybe just a kernel flash and all should be good, it takes time to learn so dont rush anything

Thanks, also what are GB bootloaders? And If I'm currently on jvq can I flash cm7 recovery onto my phone without changing any of the kernels? I'm on gingerbread so will I still have froyo bootloaders?

[Q]Flash Back to stock 2.3.3 without bootloader? is it possible?

Be running currently the new bootloader
if anyone can help please I have done these actions and needhelp:
1 .- I did flash rom GB-12, now own the new bootloaders. (I did not like the rom GB-12, personal opinion)
2 .- I returned to stock (eclair) maintaining the new bootloaders(Gingerbread boot loader) with the stock rom by icezar1
icezar1ROM stock without boot loaders http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
thus verified that the new boot loaders are compatible with earlier versions (2.1 and 2.2)
3 .- continumv5.2 flash ROM (where I am right now)
My questions are:
as I can get stock of gingerbread without having to flash the newboot loader?.
I want to avoid being reflash bootloaders
I for example go to the rom apex6.1, [ROM][2.3.3] Perception II Beta 2
just flash your new rom in cwm like normal

do not need back to stock 2.3.3 gingerbread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045734
sorry so many questions, I want to be sure
DO NOT FLASH COGNITION!!! It has a froyo sbl.bin and on gingerbread bootloaders it will brick your phone. No question about it. Dead. A corpse. A cadaver. No life in it.
Otherwise you are good, I flashed from firefly to continuum 5 rc3, to perception 2, to mosaic (biased personal favorite). No reason to go to stock.
I also has a Q. So now that I have 2.3 bootloaders installed. Should I ever have to flash bootloaders again? Or at least till 2.4. Can I just del sbl.bin on what I flash?

The only thing you have to fear is Cognition as he has the froyo sbl.bin for the 3 button fix.
Other than that, you should never have to reflash your bootloaders (beside going stock for waranty).
Thanks for the info

Can someone clarify something for me please?
I flash Continuum 5 and also gingerbread bootloaders usig ODIN. I followed instruction from MobileTechVideos.
My question is this...if I wanted to try another ROM based on Froyo how do I do this? Would I need to flash back Froyo bootloaders?
And how do I go about just flashing another gingerbread based ROM?

Well you just make shore no sbf.bin file in rom by unzipping it and checking...(i don't know of any roms that still have those in then now, even cognition doesn't anymore.)... To flash gingerbread rom it is same as with froyo, I use cwm. I've heard serinity 7 is really great. So just flash as usual, but with froyo roms just be careful and check first..... BTW trance is way better than techno, just saying

Just make sure the ROMs you're going to flash will not either flash your Primary Bootloaders or Secondary Bootloaders. Then, you're safe.
Primary Bootloader(GB) + Secondary Bootloader(GB) = Alive.
Primary Bootloader(Froyo) + Secondary Bootloader(Froyo) = Alive.
Primary Bootloader(Froyo) + Secondary Bootloader(GB) = Dead.
Primary Bootloader(GB) + Secondary Bootloader(Froyo) = Dead.

You can use the eclair one-click to get back to stock, DO NOT USE THE ONE WITH THE THREE BUTTON FIX!
Also you can just flash a froyo rom and kernal without reboot in CWM.

[Q] Odin one-click softbricks my phone

I'm having a bit of trouble with Odin one-click. Last night I decided to upgrade from Perception 10.4 (Froyo based) to Perception 2b3 (Gingerbread based). I plugged it in, put it into download mode, and activated Odin. It ran just fine, but at the end, my phone rebooted into a boot loop. I ended up putting together a jig to get it back into download mode, and tried again. Same thing happened. I eventually ended up using a Froyo Odin to qwerty least get it working again. Does anyone have any ideas as to why Gingerbread Odin soft bricks my phone, and what I should do to fix it? Let me know if you need any more details. Thanks in advance.
I know this would do better in the odin thread, but I don't have enough posts to post there, mending the fact that I've been lurking around for close to a year
Guess I'll just keep posting here until a) someone responds or b) I have enough posts to ask in the proper thread
I'd ready like to be able to get my cappy running Gingerbread tonight. Anyone have any ideas?
What one click are you taking about? Is it this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
If it is, this will take you to stock eclair. Not sure what ur talking about with one click froyo. There is a one click GB from Design Gears in the development section. It flashes the newest release of GB stock. If you can get into dl mode you can flash either of the one click odins, but read about both before you do. Bootloaders are involved, and if you don't know about them they can be trouble. Read in development section.
This is a link to one click for GB stock. CONTAINS BOOTLOADERS.

Sorry, for some reason can't get that second link to work properly. Doing this from my phone. Just type in the url. If you decide to flash this GB oneclick, you'll be on the kf1 "official" release. Check dev section and you can flash beta cognition if you want. People are having great results with this rom, including myself. Good luck.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I recommend flashing the KF1 odin one-click. I just flashed that one, and it worked like a champ. Its in the Continuum v6 thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136128. If you read the instructions it will work flawlessly. The only odin problems I've ran into have been user induced.
Okay, I'll try out that KF1. All I really need it for is to get the bootloaders so I can install other 2.3 roms. Will this work for that?
The Froyo Odin I was tackling about was just an older version, I think.
Edit: Why is it so much more difficult to go from 2.2 to 2.3 than it was going from 2.1 to 2.2? Upgrading to 2.2, I just had to use CWM to flash the new rom onto the phone.
Okay, I was trying to follow the instructions in the Continuum thread, and it looks like I am supposed to go back to Eclair before flashing Continuum. I was using this one-click Odin, and it was causing my phone to softbrick. No idea why. Will I be able to use that KF1 Odin to get to Gingerbread, then flash other GB based roms?
And by the trouble caused by bootloaders, you just mean how it will hardbrick if it loses connection in the middle of flashing, right? Or is there more. I've been switching out roms on phones for a while now, but it hasn't been this complex before...
If you mix bootloaders, you will hard brick ur phone. 2.1/2.2 roms have the same bootloaders. GB boots are different. That's why there is more involved to flash GB roms. Basically all the GB roms are I9000 based roms. The kf1 is an i897 based stock rom. If you flash kf1 stock rom, you will lose cwm. You can try cog beta 2 rom if you would like. After following steps to flash GB bootloaders with link mentioned above, check dev section. There are currently 2 kf1 custom roms. I use the cog beta 2, and it works great. people have mentioned that they have flashed i9000 roms over kf1, but I personally haven't, cuz so far cog beta is working great and the call quality is outstanding compared to any of the i9000 roms. Read read read read, before taking any steps. You don't want to ruin it phone! If you want to flash i9000 based GB, read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045734
Btw, what build is ur phone? (4 digit number under battery). Some builds, especially 1010 have trouble with oneclick.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So it sounds like what I need to do is use that KF1 Odin, then I can flash other roms over that? How can I tell which custom roms are KF1? Is Perception KF1 based? What would you recommend I read to make sure I'm doing it right? Are there specific threads that are especially helpful for this? Thanks for all of the help, I'd really like to learn how to do this.
It'll say in the title. Liked I said, currently there are only two kf1 based roms. Cog beta and another one that I can't remember the name of. If it says something in the title besides kf1/or i897, it's for i9000. Ex/ jvh, jvo, jvp are all i9000 based.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
What do I need to do if I want to use a non-KF1 based GB rom? I've been very happy with Perception, and I'd like to keep using it.
If you want to flash GB stock that is based off of I9000 read and follow this, step by step:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045734
After you do this you can flash GB roms via cwm.
If you want to flash GB with kf1, you can, and people have been running I9000 based custom roms on the same bootloaders. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ANY ROM YOU'RE FLASHING TO SEE IF IT INCLUDES BOOTLOADERS. I personally haven't run any I9000 roms after flashing kf1, but I believe if you want to do this, (NOT POSITIVE ABOUT THIS, SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO RESEARCH THIS FIRST) you would have to flash an appropriate I9000 kernel using odin (not oneclick, but the full version). Put the kernel in the PDA slot, uncheck repartition, and auto reboot and flash. That way you will get cwm 2 or3 back which will enable you to flash the rom you want. (Remember, with stock KF1 you lose cwm). After kernel flashes, boot ONLY into recovery, and flash rom that you put on your SD card before doing any of this, and flash via cwm. AGAIN, NOT POSITIVE THIS IS WHAT YOU DO, SO RESEARCH.
That makes a lot more sense than the instructions I was trying to follow. I'll try that in a bit.
It worked! Thanks for all of your help
What did you end up doing? GB I9000 stock, or kf1 then flash I9000 custom rom over it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I used the I9000 GB stock rom from that link you posted, then flashed a custom rom over it. I ended up using Perception 2 beta.
Glad it worked for you.

Getting started (suggestions)

I would like to start with a new ROM on my captivate but i think i need to learn more about what the basics are aside from youtube tutorials does anyone have any suggestions on how to get started, what to read, ROMs,ect.. I am already rooted with titanium on and now i would like to get into some good ROMs
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Buy the pro version of titanium backup. It'll save you a lot of time. Make sure you know the difference between Samsung's Advanced Recovery Mode and Clockwork Mod Recovery. DO NOT FLASH ROMS USING ROM MANAGER.
Read, read, and read.

Start with flashing froyo based roms. Most of them are really simple and safe to flash. Learn about clockwork mod since almost all froyo roms use that to flash.
Like in order to flash cognition just drop it into your internal sd, boot into clockwork mod recovery mode and install it from the sd card. It's that easy. Just be careful when trying a gingerbread based rom because then you need to worry about boot loaders and stuff.

even GB roms use CWM
Ya I know they do but they aren't as simple to flash as the froyo roms.
But the op needs to read the sticky at the top of the development section on how to flash roms. But be aware the guide is for froyo (2.2) based roms only.
Here is the How to Flash Captivate 2.2 Based Roms thread. Read it carefully and you will have no issues at all flashing any 2.2 based rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364

cognition 4.5.3 would be good to start off with, make sure you read and follow the exact steps before flashing the rom,pm me if you need help
Also having a Jig around is always a good idea just in case you key combos decide to not work in a bootloop or fail firmware flash. You never know.

Wont boot but got download

Hi excuse my ignorance im a dhd user slightly different.
I rooted my wifes phone, clockwork was okay but would only boot cm7..would not allow gapps.
So i reverted to taking it back to froyo. Then i wanted ics on it,so flashed that,i kept her data so tried resoring that.
Now it just hangs at galaxy s screen
I cant enter into clockwork at all. It does enter download thankgod.
Thing is taking it back to froyo takes a while! Is there any way to take her straight to ics or cyn 7 or different rom without doing froyo.
The kernels for this phone are slighty different from mine the way they work..so how do i get the exact kernel and rom running again,
Also lol her data is on a back up i did will tgat still be there? Rom manager must save it somewhere?
ill be honest i have no idea anymore when coming to the galaxy s,im fairly confident with my dhd,but this has got me stumped
plus ill be a goner if i cant get it restored lol
Sorry for the looooong question

T hink your problem is that you tried to install ICS on Froyo Base. SInce Gingerbread there is a new bootloader. If you want to install ICS or any Gingerbread-based ROM, you have to install a JVH base ROM (with bootloader), for example Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN, first. This will update the bootloader and you may flash any newer rom via CWM.
If you have an boot-loop now, you may try flashing Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN via ODIN, its a very basic ROM (see this thread).
Thanks for your help, its up and running again

[Q] Now definitely confused

hello guys
I confirm i'm confused now and don't know how to do.
when the first ROM of ICS went out (LPY) i was so excited that i'm flashed it but i can't use the phone cause the battery can stay for one day even 5 hours.
after rezding several (concerning the brick bug) I went back to gb (following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025&highlight=direct+dl) through mobile odin and the phone is working.
Now there is a plenty of ICS ROM LPY,LP9 etc etc.
I want know to back (to the future) to ICS but still afraid of this brick but.
Can someone tell me how is possible to move to ICS ?
One more question can we mix pda phone modem from different rom
what brick are you talking about? the only bug im aware that causes brick is the one on cf root and CWM backing up and restoring... you can safely flash isc trough odin and it will work just fine
Thank for your quick reply
Correct me if i'm wrong (very newbie on android and sgn) I just have to download one of the ics Rom (N7000XX###) and flash it without cwm and root option cause right now i have cwm and root.

Flash from Mobile
You can use "Mobile ODIN to flash keeping Ever root and Inject Super user checked" or "use CWM to flash and select CF-root kernel" to keep root and SU intact with the new ROM.
Try any of the safe custom ROMs. PA, Asylum etc.. They are allow awesome but nothing beats PA for me. Once you use AOSP, you would never wanna go back. They are much much much better than the crappy stock GB-looking ICS.
