OK So,
I recieved a Galaxy S today, and having some experience with a HTC Desire HD I knew how rooting/flashing roms work. But this is different.
I have flashed twice so far. Once trying to get to CM7 MIUI but that failed, leaving me in a recovery loop. So I panicked. I then used someones one click odin restore on these forums, however being the idiot I am didn't read that that was vibrant firmware and not i9000 firmware. Download mode was working 100% before I did this, and now I can't get it to work for the life of me. Can someone please help? I am stuck at the AT&T boot logo and I can't do anything. I have the correct firmware from my carrier, I know how to flash it back to stock, but I can't get into the freaking download mode. Why is this? Is it disabled for good?
Please don't tell me my phone is a brick now....
Try the jig method. You can make your own or plenty on eBay. But I think you are in the 'not good ' realm. But usually you don't get to the boot screen either so there is some hope.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I've bought a jib off ebay so I will see if that works. What I am trying to understand is why would doing what I did somehow disable download mode? That makes no sense to me. And the phone isn't fully bricked since the boot screen comes up.
Download mode is software based and you flashed new software on the wrong hardware. It's on the bootloader I believe. The jig tries to get it forced as I think there is a backup bootloader but not at all sure on the details.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I see. Well I will try the jig and see what happens. If that doesn't work I will send back to Samsung and blame Kies for the problem. Which will be a bit sus since I have an at&t bootlogo and I live in Australia but oh well
One other question I have is if I do get into download mode, I have all the stock firmware files from SAMfirmware, however the files are only a pda file and a 512 pit file. I was under the impression I needed a csc file and something else? Or is it all included in the .tar PDA file?
Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it!
Usually what you need is in the tar for the pda spot. The others are more for mix and match. Just be aware that some firmware does not have all the files as they aren't meant to be flashed with pit. You will want to flash a pit so you'll need a complete one. My stock has no dbdata.rfs for example and if you use a pit then you get a mounting error as no partition is created.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I had a look inside the .tar file which is for I9000DTJP5 (exact firmware that I had on stock) and there is no dbdata.rfs like you said. So you are saying this firmware that I got from samfirmware.com is incomplete? And if I flash with the PDA + 512.pit I will get mounting errors? So do I just flash the PDA firmware by itself and tick re-partition?
Thanks.
PS I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
So I'm guessing this changed my kernal and modem? I beleive the kernel does not come included in the pda .tar... or does it?
The pda will have the zImage in it (which is the kernel).
But try to find one with the dbdata.rfs file. For some reason I think jpy is one people use (anyone else following this thread). There are some roms that people describe as 'working everytime' and I think that its because they are complete roms. I'd also look at ezboot thread as you will want to make sure that any capivate bootloader gets removed and updated with an i9000 one but stock roms usually have the bootloader I believe.
Have you (out of curiousity) tried the captivate download sequence (vol down and power - I think - maybe while battery is inserted)?
Also might try the ADB method of prompting download for captivate.
Yeah none of samfirmware comes with the dbdata.rfs file. Other option would be to flash to something like Darky's rom. I must have screwed the boot loader since I came from froyo > CM7 bootloader and that's when things went wrong. What file removes & affects the bootloader from Odin?
Yes I've tried the captivate download mode which is Volume Down + Power like you said. ADB is impossible since the phone isn't operational.
So that easy one click odin that I used flashed the modem, the bootloader, and the rom. This is going to be hard to fix.
I need to use firmwares from my country... and JPU isn't listed under australia on samfirmware website
Well the bootloader for froyo and cm7 are the same but the problem was the file system was not (cm7 uses yaffs or something - not a linux person...) so you had to do a full flash with pit (and of course not with captivate rom in retrospect) which did screw up the bootloader and more.
You can also get a service (professional shops) called JTAG that opens up the phone and reflashes just the bootloader from point on the motherboard. Some information here on XDA. Its a specialized deep hardware fix but it solves even hard bricks that won't turn on (unless there is physical damage of course). Might cost $100 or so though.... Might be worth a search for local shops that do that.
found this post (and it references another thread).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749641
But its not good news... These are from last year but it looks like people were hooped in similar situations though i think the JTAG method has been formalized since then.
OK! The Jig works!!!!!!!!!! SO happy. However I am facing the problem of flashing now. Odin gets stuck at cache.rfs for about 20 minutes until I disconnect the phone and try again.
The files I am using with a 512.pit with re-partition checked are...
Phone:MODEM_I9000DTJP3.tar.md5
PDA:CODE_I9000DTJP5.tar.md5
CSC:CSC_I9000XSAJP4.tar (my countries correct csc file)

Found the culprit... the csc file which I obtained from XDA was corrupt... so I used a different one. My phone is now up and running. I just want to say a big thanks for your time and advice. Thanks

I'm pretty sure my phone isn't bricked.
Ok, this is what I've done...
I'm on official Froyo for UK, unbranded handset (i think jpo/jpp firmware).
I tried to install Voodoo Lagfix (stable, released today) by Odin.
I started Odin up, put PDA as the Voodoo file, put my phone into download mode, connected the usb, waited for odin to detect it and then clicked start.

That's what Odin said, so I presumed it failed.
The screen was black and not doing anything so I unplugged it and removed the battery. When I put in battery and tried to start up phone, I get a logo of a flip phone on the left, with a line dash to a yellow triangle with black explanation mark, and then another dashed line to a computer.
Can I have a set of instructions on how to continue please!
which ROM did you install?
make sure the TAR is not corrupted
even if it failed, you can flash it again
the only way to find out if it works is to unplug and reboot it
there is always the JIG option if you don't have the 3 button modes

It's not a ROM, I tried to put on Voodoo Lagfix 5 (stable) onto my stock firmware from Kies (JPP/JPO).
Shall I try to reflash the Lagfix? I think I need to flash a firmware, can someone please tell me, starting to get a little stressed haha.
BTW, Download Mode is working.
I would imagine you are going to have to flash stock firmware to it, you can try flashing it again or perhaps a different kernel
got it working now guys
just reflashed it and it worked
Hi everybody!
This is my first posting here, I hope it's in the right category. I've used the search function, found similar problems but no one facing the same issue. I wanted to upgrade to Android 2.3.3 (2.3.4) using Odin. I tried three different Firmware releases but none worked. This is what happens in Odin:
Code:

<ID:0/006> param.lfs
<ID:0/006> zImage
I tried with and without repartition. Sometimes the process stops at the SetupConnection line, sometimes at zImage when obviously the kernel should be installed. When in download mode, I see a blue progress bar starting to move across the phone screen, but soon later the whole display turns green/blue/white (it always had a different color) with no more text. Hours later Odin finally displays a FAIL message.
I tried firmware versions I9000XXJVQ and I9000XXJVR from samfirmware.com with 512 PIT file. I recognized some Kies-Thread running in the background on my Win7 machine, which I killed to prevent any problems.
In another forum I was told this issue might be related to some lagfixes installing ext4. When I read that it came to my mind that I indeed had installed the voodoo lagfix in February - I had completely forgotten about that. However, is there a chance to recover the phone? Putting it into DL mode is the only thing that works. Any help is appreciated!
Can you go in recovery mode to disable the lagfix? and when you use the 3 part file always check re-partition.
Had similar problems with Windows 7 x64, 2 in 3 flashes would fail.
Try another pc if possible with Xp.

Well, I tried, but I did not succeed - (Hold Vol up + Power on) but I'll try again. Is it absolutely necessary to remove the lagfix? As mentioned before someone told me that ext4 might be causing those problems. However, I though the sd was repartitioned (when checkbox is ticked) and the firmware is a kind of disk image which is installed and thus overwrites the existing file system?

it's vol up + home button + power on, but don't release the button untill your are in the menu.
A stock firmware is made for RFS partition not ext4, i think it's that the problem, but i may be wrong.

Thank you all so far! Well, it almost worked - at least kind of. I tried it a couple of times, rebooted the PC, rebooted the phone, reinstalled drivers, used another USB port. After a couple of retries it stopped at "factoryfs.rfs" - which obviously contains the file system. This makes me guess that it does not matter which FS currently is installed as it gets overwritten by this factoryfs-thing. Please correct me if I am wrong!
Still, any help on this topic is gladly appreciated!
when you flash pda in odin the file system is over-written and reverts to rfs.
Try without re-partition ticked. Also after several attempts your battery may have no juice left in it: pull the battery, let it sit a couplce of minutes and then plug it in and see if it will re-charge -- may not, you might be stuck at download and odin.
Flash an older 2.2 firmware first: pda. phone and csc, don't bother with the pit file and don't bother with re-partition -- this is just to get you back and working, you can then charge the battery and update to jvr after.
Also check the thread on unbricking the phone -- most issues with flashing are recoverable, its just persistence.

Well, I tried to flash with and without repartition/pit-file. The download process hangs at different stages. I doubt it has to do with the battery, as the phone has been attached to the PC for almost three days now, I guess the battery is charged then...?

To which of the thousands of unbricking threads do you refer? I read something about a tool which puts the phone into recovery mode, from where I can format the sd. However, I can't get to recovery mode by pressing vol up, home + power, i just can enter download mode. I have tried various firmwares, neither did work...
Thanks for your help so far, maybe you can give me another hint on the thread you're talking about?
Try rebooting the phone, rebooting the pc,use a different usb cable(this part made it work for me), and try again. Hope it helps man cause i've been down that road and it sucked bricked my sgs 2 times but thankfully revived it because heimdall one click un-brick oh and 1 more thing if you use 3 files check re partition

Mate, try a full 3 file flash and a pc with Win XP 32-bit and ODIN 1.83
Worked for me
Good luck flashing !!
Thank you all guys, it worked - even though it was none of the tips provided here. I have no clue what the problem was, I moved to another PC, it took me three tries to flash the phone.
- The second PC was Win7 64bit as well.
- I used the original cable (tried with another one as well, no difference)
- I used just the drivers without any Kies installation.
- I used a SINGLE FILE FLASH with Android 2.2.1 first (which I was then unable to boot as it stuck with the S symbol during boot)
- Flashed 2.3.4 afterwards - worked.
My phone has never ever been running so smoothly before, even with lag fixes!
Unfortunately, my external SD makes troubles, but let's see how to fix that.
My note to all of you guys facing similar problems:
Some say, use PIT and repartition, some say, don't
Just don't care - for me it finally worked without (single file flash). Try all possibilities.
Some say, install Kies, just because of the drivers, some say, install the drivers without Kies
Just don't care - try either option, it might work - for me the drivers without Kies finally worked but I have no clue if that had any impact.
Some say, use another USB cable, some say use the original one
Just don't care - try different cables if possible, in my case there was no difference.
Some say, use the USB port closest to your MB, others say, try various USB ports
Just don't care - try different ports, the behavior cannot be reproduced, each try the flashing process got stuck at another stage - independent of the USB port used.
Some say, try another computer with another OS
Good choice - that made it working in my case. Even though the other machine was nearly the same with exactly the same OS installed. Also, I have successfully flashed my phone with the first one before.
Thanks guys, you're the best! And give Android 2.3.4 a try, it's FAST and SMOOTH!
I was following the overcome guide and when i came to step 8/9 (flash overcome kernel) it didn't work, so then i chose the same pit which you use in a previous step and also the kernel and now it worked with the pit but not the kernel. i got stuck in download mode and tried to flash only kernel again but it didn't work not it got stuck on ConnectionSetup... or something like that. I think it couldn't find the device, i shut down odin and took out the micro-sd card which someone said could cause problems but it still didn't work. now i'm stuck at a screen like this: picture of phone .. ! .. picture of computer. I guess it means it can't connect to the computer. Anyone know what to do? I've tried searching the forums and tried some different stuff but haven't succeded.
Edit: Seems like i can use odin even though i don't get into the download mode, will update soon. Seems to work correctly, i'll give the flashing another try and i will make sure to cross the right boxes and so on.
Edit2: This time i checked that i had all the correct things crossed in Odin but when i try to flash the kernel it fails. what should i do? i come from gingerbread 2.3.3 (re-stocked) so it can't be the bootloader right?
Edit3: This is what i get when i try to flash the kernel:

Hi guys and girls.
I've been frantically searching XDA for the last few hours for a definitive answer, but to no avail, so thought it's about time I just asked!
I have in my possession a Samsung Galaxy S19000, that will only go into download made.
Here's how it happened........
This morning, I was given the phone by my brother in law and asked to root it and upgrade it to a newer/better rom. When it was passed
to me, it was.....
Firmware: 2.2.1
Baseband: 19000XXJY
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build: FROYO.XXJPY
After a successful root and upgrade, the phone ended up like this...
Firmware: 2.3.7
Baseband: 19000XXJVK
Kernel: 2.6.35.14-g3088622
Build: CyanogenMod-7.2.0-galaxysmtd
The new Rom, as nice as it was, wasnt what he wanted, so he asked me to restore it back to it's stock state. I went into CMW and did a restore, but it failed, and now the phone will only go into download mode.
I've tried flashing a stock rom via Odin, but it got as far as the 'Nand write' stage, then hangs.
Kies doesn't show up the device in 'Emergency firmware recovery' either.
I no all is not lost, so I'm not giving up. Any help will be much appreciated.
:fingers-crossed:
Can you post the whole Odin Log?
Normally this happen when the partitions on the embedded multi media card gets corrupted for whatever reason, also known as the emmc.
Maybe it helps to flash the pit file to repartition.
To add.....
When the phone is off, it displays the 'phone and computer with an explanation mark triangle inbetween symbol', and Kies doesnt recognise it. When I enter download mode, Kies hangs at 'Connecting' for.....well..ever! So atleast I know it's recognised by my PC (ish) and it isn't completely dead :silly:
I had the same thing with the triangle a few months ago.
I just flashed a Stock Firmware with Repartition. Just be sure with Odin that you have ticked the right things Afterwards it worked.
Thankyou for you reply, and sorry for the delay posting back. God damn new user restrictions!!!

For the moment you can ignore the second thread
Find a 3 File (PDA, Phone, CSC) Firmware ( maybe samifirmware.com ) , then download the 512 pit file for the GALAXY S! and the flash the Firmware with pit file and repartition.

[Q] Samsung Captivate phone is dead, not showing AT & T screen, download mode screen
Hi,
I was trying to install new ROM through Odin software. I tried with Odin3 one click downloader. I also tried using KI2 with Boog's Kernel odin software. but both are failing. Shows FAIL with following output -

Another problem is that for my Samsung Captivate mobile... Download mode screen stopped coming ( I think it happened when by mistake I updated mobile's bootloader with some Corn s/w bootloader by selecting the file in Bootloader field in Odin. It created a big problem for me. I couldn't go in to download mode after this.
So finally I purchased USB jig to enable Download mode (last option to make mobile in download mode).
Even though I can update the firmware using Jig. But still download mode screen is not coming. But when I connect mobile to computer with usb cable, after using USB jig, I could see that odin shows "ADDED" with yellow box showing some port no. Above output comes when i continue with installing tar/md5 file of ROM with Odin. but it fails. So i am unable to use my mobile... .
It worked when I updated ROM with following package - GT_I9000_ZSJPK_ZSJPG_OZSJPG. It contains PDA, PHONE and CSC files.
First I did partition with file s1 odin 20100512.pit and after that I selected these three files in corresponding fields in Odin software and clicked on start button. It worked and i could see FROYO installed in my captivate phone. But this ROM update is for I9000 mobile. so all functionality is not working properly. what i mean to say here that I can update mobile with I9000 ROM. but not with captivate ROM.
My mobile's situation is that it has no software installed. Just as a hardware. No Bootloader, Nothing. Even AT & T screen doesnt come when I start my mobile. It is totally dead.
Can anybody please help me ? how can I resolve this problem. I searched all the thread in forum. But it is not helping me to resolve my problem. .
Issues are -
AT & T screen is not coming when i start the phone.
Download mode screen is not coming when i start the phone.
Just Assume that I have captivate phone without partition, without bootloader ...
Can anybody please help ?

It created a big problem for me. I couldnt go in to downlaod mode after this.
So finally I purchased USB jig to enabled Download mode (last option to make mobile in downlaod mode).
Even though I can update the firmware using Jig. But still download mode screen is not coming. But when I connect mobile to computer with usb cable, after using USB jig, I could see that odin shows "ADDED" with yellow box with some port number. Above output is comes when i continue installing tar/md5 file of ROM with Odin. but it fails.

Here's what you need: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Grab Odin KK4 with bootloaders from that thread. That should get your phone back up. If you wanna get farther and flash a custom ROM, follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266

Re: [Q] Samsung Captivate phone is dead, not showing AT & T screen, download mode scr
Try a different micro usb/usb cable. And also a different usb port if the different cable doesn't work.
And if that fails...some Captivates don't like One Clicks, so see my post here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30840818
Then use the [Utility]KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26710533 to get Root and KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery...if u want.

Hi,
I followed the steps written in the forum above. But that is not working my case. I tried the steps in different computer with diff OS installed. but still same problem.
Is there any way to get PHONE, PDA, CSC file separately for i897 ? I could install I9000 in my samsung captivate mobile which had these files. So just thought, if i can get these files for i897, probably it should work?
Any Idea where i can get these files?

Hi,
Still my problem is same. I went through the link. but that is also not helping.
In my phone, I cant see download screen, even though if i use USB jig.
When I run Odin s/w, I can see in odin as port "Added" when Connect my mobile with computer using usb port.
Usually Odin show port added when u are in download mode. But here in my case, when i first USB jig and then connect to computer, download mode screen message and image doesnt come. it shows nothing(like no display). But I can see , Odin shows port Added. and I could update kernel, do partitions etc. But when I select Image file as PDA. and click start. It always fails.
Is it happening because i cant see download mode screen ?
1. What firmware I need to install and how which contains code for showing download screen ?
2. Or can anybody provide me all files i.e. PIT, Bootloader, PDA, Phone, CSC for odin so that i can select all files in respective fields under Odin software and start update?
Please help.
One more thing i have noticed.. here is the output of odin when i update my mobile with following files of I9000 model. while trying images for my captivate mobile, I found a zip file for model GT I9000 and package name was -GT_I9000_ZSJPK_ZSJPG_OZSJPG. It had three files as - 1. CSC_OZSJPG.tar.md5. 2. PDA_ZSJPK.tar.md5. 3. PHONE_ZSJPG.tar.md5.
I selected this files in corresponding PHONE, CSC, PDA fields in odin and it updates phone successfully with the following output -

But even though i can see my phone with I9000 model image installed. but most of the operations it doesnt work. might be becoz image is not fully compatible with Captivate model. so no use.
You should always be able to see the download screen no matter what fw you're on. I could see it on 2.3.5, 4.2.2, etc. Even with a jig you can't force it into download mode? Did you make it or buy it?

I purchased a jig for samsung captivate from ebay website. when I tried with it, It doesnt show me downlaod mode screen. But it make my mobile able to connect to system. And I can see the port as added in odin. using that only I have installed android froyo of GT I9000 model in captivate mobile. I tried with all the PDA files available in forums here, but it didnt work.

I think it meant something along the lines of ''What is showing on your screen while in download mode''?

Hi,
when i usb jig and after that connect to system. I can see port Added in Odin software. which ideally happens when mobile is in downlaod mode.
but here for me display doesnt show anything on screen, screen remain blank. No android icon comes. but still I can see port added in odin and also can install files in the mobile. like pit, bootloader PDA files. etc.
I have tried my image files which is available with bootloaders in forum. But when I start. I always get following error.
<ID:0/016> Added!!
<ID:0/016> Odin v.3 engine (ID:16)..
<ID:0/016> File analysis..
<ID:0/016> Set PIT file..

<ID:0/016> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/016> Sbl.bin
<ID:0/016>
<ID:0/016>
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)..
It always fails while executing sbl.bin files. I have gone through some forum where reports similar issue of sbl.bin.
Resolution which was given is to try with " 4 part flash files" which is Boot, PDA, Modem, CSC files.
http://www.droidevelopers.com/f299/14467-sbl-bin-error.html.
But this solution is not for captivate mobile.
It would be good if someone can provide me these files instead of a single installable file.

Here is the i897uckf1 gingerbread 2.3.3 files...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30840818...Post #284 in that thread.
Do not put any files in the Bootloader tab of Odin. Just PDA in pda tab, CSC in csc tab, PHONE in phone tab and also Pit file in the pit tab. Be sure to have a reliable usb/micro usb and constant power source. This firmware does contain the Bootloaders.
