The way I have done that is to first root your phone using Shortfuze's superoneclick root. There is also an option on that program to allow non-market apps.
ATT recently pushed an update that allowed non-market apps to be installed. This was to specifically accommodate the installation of the Amazon App Market. However nothing shows up the the settings where you are supposed to click the radio button/ check box to allow non-market apps, they just install. Try installing a non-market *.apk and if it works your phone is currently allowing non-market apps. It was working for me. If it's still not working and you don't want to root. Sideload Wonder Machine works great. Only downside to that is that it involves the use of a computer and USB cable. It is far easier than sideloading though the android sdk though.

I'm trying to install firefox on my captivate, but it tells me that my phone is set to block installation of apps not sourced in market. I do have my phone rooted, but I didnt unlock the market because all I do is use appbrain and fastweb installer, so I never figured I needed to. I thought about unlocking the market, but would that just unlock the market and still leave the security up preventing me from installing the .apk? Hopefully theres a quick fix...
use the side loading app which is here somewhere.
Its not on the market, its a downloaded apk...i access the downloaded file through astro file manager

You need to Sideload your phone, you can start by trying Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine. Use your search function, it'll find you tons of stuff
Also watch which place you post your questions, this thread is for ROM development. You should post questions like this in Themes and Apps or General.
You have to enable sideloading or use the side load wonder machine.
One Click Decripple (must root)

First off, you should really post in the correct section.
Second, you need to enable non-market apps. This is done a number of ways (custom roms, sideloading, etc...) but you can also do it manually by editing settings.db
Thanks for the feedback...sorry for posting in the wrong spot, this is my first post on here

I've used the Sideload Wonder Machine and it worked for what I needed, but I wanted to be able to sideload without the machine (directly on my phone). I ran across a post for OCD, but then saw somewhere that you had to have sideloading enabled first. Am I missing something? I thought that is what OCD did.
Is enabling sideloading the same as allowing non-market apps?
Sorry if this is obvious, I'm just getting into this stuff.
I'm rooted (OCR), sdk (adb) and Odin seem to be working, OCLF, have done a Clockwork backup and still on Eclair 2.1.
I use Astro file manager to install nonmarket apps. You can download files to your SD card and open them with astro. Gives you the option to browse the app file or install.
Hi Everyone -
I'm looking for a little help with my rooted nook, specifically on getting apps. I just rooted it, following instructions on this site using ManualNooter and CWM3028 image files starting from a stock 1.2 device. Seems like everything works fine.
When it comes to apps, it looks like there are multiple ways to allow loading of apps and I want to find what's right for me. I wasn't able to follow the instructions where you go to YouTube (although Gmail works fine for me), and the ADB options of copying via USB cable isn't attractive to me. I would like to be able to search the market and load on the device. Right now I can't even load Market apps - they download but don't install. I have checked and unchecked the "allow non-market apps" box, but nothing happens.
Are there some straightforward steps to allow me to load apps on the device without moving files around?
Thanks!
I have used SuperOneClick to root my phone, and am now trying to use it to enable non-market aps. When I do, I get the following message:
Checking value... (requires root)
Non-market applications are disabled.
Allow non-market apps... (requires root)
OK
Checking value... (requires root)
FAILED
Can anyone let me know what I need to do to enable non-market aps?
Did you try a non market app Install to make sure it wasn't working?

Bro...same thing here. What I did was flash to just about any rom and the rom will allow to install non market apps. Also, on the market there is an app that allows you to install apps from the SD card. So you could go to getandroidstuff.com and download the .apk, put on your cappy, and use the app to install. But personally I like the ROM! Yee

Sorry, I never got an e-mail that I got a reply.
Yes, I've tried to download the new Amazon market but get an error message that I can't install non-market aps.
There is a second way. It involves tibu and a brain.
1. Find settings storage in an Sqlite editor, I use sqlite from the market, it costs money but it is worth it.
2. Find the database in settings storage and open it
3. Click on secure
4.look at the first column, find allow non market apps.
Change the value for the non market apps from 0 to 1
5. Save the database.
You may need to reboot but that shouldn't be necessary
If it is already a 1 then change it to a zero and save then do it again.
Also before you do this download the super one click again and try it with the newly downloaded one click.

Did you root using one click, then try that( i reccomend rageagainstthecage method)(on the right upper corner of program)
So I deleted tethering guard after I rooted my phone under the impression from some other forum that would allow me to tether freely. Well its quite the opposite, now when I go to the tethering app, it wont even attempt to turn on, neither will any other tethering apps. I found the tetheringguard.apk file online and attempted to re install it to no avail. I have tried, command prompt, this is the result;
C:\Users\RC\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EXa0.371\data>adb install <C:\Users\RC\Downloads>/<Tetheringguard.apk
Access is denied.
I have tried the APK installer app from the play store, it loads via Sim and when I click install it says "Application not installed"
Lastly I tried emailing the apk to my own email and opening it with my phone, that does the same thing as the APK installer app.
I am brand new at all of this stuff so please be patient, and thanks for the help
Also Im using holiday-dream-x2-Rom.
3rd party apps allowed
usb debugging is on.
Remount the system partition as r/w or download one of the ruu.zips and pull it from there

it wont install like a normal app because its a system app, you have to use a root explorer to copy it to the proper location and then make sure it has correct permissions.
Reflash rom, and only wiping dalvik and cache, and you will have it back.
